LEGO CUUSOO Space Troopers & Exo-Suit

There are two LEGO project on LEGO CUUSOO that recently achieved the required 10,000 votes from the public to be reviewed by LEGO for possible production. This is a huge milestone for both LEGO projects, so let’s congratulate them and talk about them a bit. 😉

LEGO CUUSOO Logo

LEGO CUUSOO SPACE TROOPERS BY NICK ROYER – this LEGO project has been steadily gaining support for quite some time now. Because Space is a perennial theme at LEGO, I could very well see Space Troopers as the next official LEGO Space theme. I will be very curious to see where LEGO will go with this project, as if approved, this will be the first fan-created full LEGO theme. (All previous LEGO sets that came out of CUUSOO were stand-alone single sets.) It would be a major achievement by the LEGO community!

CUUSOO LEGO Space Troopers by Nick Royer

There is a lot going for the LEGO CUUSOO Space Troopers. The project includes everything a LEGO fan could ask for from a Space theme; good-guys, bad-guys, space-vehicles, all ready for some major space conflict – also referred to as playability. Check out the video promo below! 😀

Nick Royer, the creator of the LEGO Space Troopers project envisions different terrains for space-exploration, armored vehicles, drop-ships, and battle-packs of Space Troopers and Aliens (he calls them Ugokins – cool green and orange four-legged guys and nefarious enemies of the Space Troopers). He says: “Taking place in the distant future, long after initial human-alien contact, the Space Troopers theme follows our intrepid band of Space Troopers across the Galaxy as they fight evil aliens and explore treacherous terrains.” He calls the project a “theme being in essence an updated Neo-Classic-Space mixed with the vigorous ethos of Alien Conquest”. Nice way to put it…

LEGO’s official statement on the project after it achieved 10,000 votes was as follows: “Space Troopers is a fun concept, well thought out, and with broad-based support. You’ve done a great job of presenting it concisely with a lot of possibilities. Further it is a great example of a high quality concept refined over time into something that looks like it has real potential as a LEGO product. Congratulations on achieving 10,000 supporters. We now officially advance this project to the Review phase.” You can check out the details on this project here: LEGO CUUSOO Space Troopers by Nick Royer

LEGO CUUSOO EXO-SUIT BY PETER REID – this is another LEGO Space themed project with a broad base of fan-support. This is a single-model project, only including the Exo-Suit and some accessories. The design itself is deliciously greebled to the hilt, which should provide an interesting building experience. The Exo-Suit model could fit well into any LEGO Space or not-so-distant military themed LEGO creations.

CUUSOO LEGO Exo-Suit by Peter Reid

The creator of the project Peter Reid requested that if his model makes it to the development stage LEGO designer Mark Stafford handles the final design of the Exo-Suit. I hope that will be the case as Mark is well known for his excellent vehicle designs in LEGO Exo-Force, Agents, Power Miners, Space Police, Alien Conquest and many other sets.

LEGO’s official statement on the project after it achieved 10,000 votes was as follows: “A beautiful model and well-deserved success! The detail makes it come alive and it’s easy to imagine it working in a shuttle-bay, a team of them constructing a space-station, or engaged in an epic mecha battle. Congratulations on achieving 10,000 supporters. We now officially advance this project to the Review phase.” You can check out the details on this CUUSOO project here: LEGO CUUSOO Exo-Suit by Peter Reid

Both of these LEGO CUUSOO projects qualify for the quarterly review period beginning in March, and other qualifying project may also join them in the meantime. From the previous review-phase it seems that LEGO only chooses one project for production from any particular review period, so we just have to wait and see to find out which one it will be. 🙄

    i like the exo suit

I’m worried slightly about the Space Marines project, as it does conflict with the Galaxy Squad theme. Luckily, it appears that Galaxy Squad has already released all its sets, so they may not be competing once the space marine sets become available, if they are selected. Granted, I would have thought the modular western town could have still made it despite the Lone Ranger theme… One thing I really like about this theme is that it doesn’t go with the standard, “its different so its a bad guy” bit that most LEGO play themes have, with some distinctly not human aliens on the “good” side. There are some new parts it suggests, but I think most of them can be changed if this is a make or break issue.

The Exo-Suit I kind of worry about. Although it is nice with lots of greebleing, it really is not a model you can “play with” compared with other LEGO Mechs. I hope that the changes that are likely to be made, if approved, are mostly to help with the stability of the model, as too many changes will change the look too much, and why people wanted it. Perosnally, I love the “Neo-Classic Space” Fan theme, but this one is more of just a Generic (but still great) Mech. I hope some other “Neo-Classic Space” projects get 10,000 votes.

Jacob, you make a good point about the Exo-Suit. It does look kind of fragile, but I’m sure those expert LEGO designers can fix that without sacrificing too much of the look. We shall see… If you have some CUUSOO project you would like me to feature let me know. Bloggers can help projects significantly by expanding the exposure and thereby the chances of the project to reach the required votes. 🙂

Let’s have our cake and eat it too. No reason the space troopers wouldn’t need a well designed exo-suit.

    • anonymous January 16, 2013, 3:09 PM

“No reason the Galaxy Squad wouldn’t need a platoon of space marines and a well designed exo-suit”

—- Fixed that for ya 😉

Actually, Galaxy Squad is my favorite theme this year! And I’m not even so much into Space sets! The transforming vehicles are just way awesome! I just love sets like that! I’m also a big fan of Alien Conquest. Earth Defense is one of my favorite sets of all time. 🙂

“Both of these LEGO CUUSOO projects qualify for the quarterly review period beginning in March, and other qualifying project may also join them in the meantime”

This is incorrect! Space Troopers are in the Winter review period (already being reviewed), and Exo Suit is in the Spring review period:

    Fall 2012 Review:
    – UCS Sandcrawler
    – Thinking with Portals
    – Curiosity Rover

    Winter 2012 Review:
    – Purdee Pete
    – Space Troopers

    Spring 2013 Review:
    – Exo Suit

    • admin January 16, 2013, 5:56 PM

Thanks so much for that info! I forgot all about the Sandcrawler and the other projects in the fall review! Gosh, it seems like they reached 10,000 so long ago! It is great that the Space Troopers and the Exo Suit are not competing in the same review period, so potentially we could have both. 😉

    • Dr. Inferno January 16, 2013, 5:59 PM

Yes! This is exactly what i thought! And there’s absolutely NO way that purdue pete is going to get through the review so its definetly SPACE MARINES!!!! WOOOO HOOOO!!!

      • J.C. January 17, 2013, 9:29 AM

I dunno ‘Doc. Admin is probably right about LEGO choosing one project, and since LEGO has Galaxy up and running, we may be seeing Purdue Pete instead.

But that would be unfair to LEGO fans since there are fewer college kids than fans of LEGO Space themes. It would just be a poor business choice.

  • Chris of Yoda Archives January 16, 2013, 4:34 PM

Both are great looking sets. I’m glad they are in different review periods. Space Troopers has a broader appeal than Purdue Pete. I really like the Exo-suit.

  • Dr. Inferno January 16, 2013, 5:59 PM

Hey admin, are you going to post that pilot episode for LEGO CHIMA on here tomorrow?

    • admin January 16, 2013, 6:07 PM

I need someone to upload it to YouTube. I don’t want to do it myself as it can get us into some legal issues. But if the video is uploaded by someone else I would certainly post it here. That is my hope too! 🙂

Hi – My son is NUTS about Legos. I, as his mother, was NOT nuts about all the Legos all over my house. So, we created a fun LEGO CLOSET complete with lots of display options including original ideas to display the mini-figures. You can see all the pictures at learn about how we made it happen at:

    http://www.naptimenotebook.com

I hope you enjoy it…and if you think your readers would too, I’m happy to share.

    • admin January 16, 2013, 10:08 PM

I really like your idea! A LEGO room in the closet! And just shut the door when done playing! Looks really great! I may make a separate post about this. Thanks for sharing! 😀

      • Håkan January 17, 2013, 7:57 AM

I think Lego looks great as decoration in shelves.

        • admin January 17, 2013, 10:32 AM

They do; as long as the display is tastefully done. There is such a thing as too much plastic that would ruin the experience. 😀

  • NinjaNut January 16, 2013, 10:15 PM

I love the Exo-Suit if those are going to be available I will get 3 one for display 1 for breaking and getting the brick then ill have to decide about the last one 8)

  • Håkan January 17, 2013, 8:01 AM

Trying to think about costs for the sets. The Space Troopers set seems to require a whole bunch of new molds(?) which might prove too expensive for this limited set, and the Exo-Suit set would require a bunch of various small pieces, making it quite expensive for its size.

If any of those would be chosen for release, I think the set would likely be subject to serious simplification.

(No or few new molds, smoothening out most of the greebling.)

    • admin January 17, 2013, 10:34 AM

Hakan, I think the Space Troopers is designed to be a whole theme, not just one set. I’m really not sure where LEGO will go with this as they never approved a whole theme by a LEGO fan before. The Exo-Suit has greater potential cost-wise. I don’t think it’s much different from the Mincraft set in regards to having a gazillion small parts. 😉

      • Håkan January 17, 2013, 12:40 PM

I’m also not a fan of the Space Troopers color scheme, the vehicle red is too bright and the other colors too murky, but granted, that should be an easy thing to change in the production process…

        • admin January 17, 2013, 3:43 PM

Maybe it could be changed over to dark-red. Which is a great color. The dark-red/gray color combination in Star Wars sets look awesome! 🙂

  • Frank January 17, 2013, 8:21 AM

    I really like both ideas.
    Really neat!

  • The Yellow Ninja January 17, 2013, 10:39 AM

Hey admin, I found a really neat project on CUUSOO the other day that I thought you might want to check out! here’s the link:

    • admin January 17, 2013, 12:08 PM

OMG! That’s gorgeous! Beautiful plane! Thanks for sharing! 😀

      • The Yellow Ninja January 17, 2013, 2:20 PM

No problem! I tend to waste a lot of time on CUUSOO anyways so I find A LOT of amazing projects worth being lego sets on there.

        • admin January 17, 2013, 3:46 PM

Yeah, it is easy to get lost looking at all the great projects! 😀

    • Håkan January 17, 2013, 12:36 PM

What the brick!!??… How many pieces does that behemoth contain?… Any estimate of the retail price?…

      • Håkan January 17, 2013, 12:45 PM

        Btw, needs more swoosh! 😉

      • The Yellow Ninja January 17, 2013, 2:14 PM

I have absolutely NO idea whatsoever about how much that would cost. 😀

    This is Amazing https://ideas.lego.com/

    • admin January 17, 2013, 3:48 PM

The creator of the project just contacted me this morning. I’m planning to write a post about it. 🙂

  • pythor953 January 17, 2013, 2:00 PM

Im really worried about space troopers. there’s so many perfectly valid excuses lego could have for not making it. I really hope it becomes reality, so fingers crossed

    • admin January 17, 2013, 3:45 PM

I agree. There is a lot going for this project, and a lot going against it. I’m really curious how LEGO will handle this one. 🙂

  • Me-Myself-and-I January 19, 2013, 6:40 AM

On the CUUSOO blog they have said that they are only making one set per project. So although making a whole bunch of sets for one project was encouraged, as it provides interest for supporters, it isn’t going to happen.
It’s kind of sad, but it makes sense.

    • admin January 19, 2013, 11:03 AM

Hm… thanks for sharing that! I do remember reading that blog post but forgot some of those important details.

  • lego chronicler January 19, 2013, 2:58 PM

I hope they boot galaxy squad and put in nick royers space marines!

    • admin January 19, 2013, 5:39 PM

Oh, you don’t like Galaxy Squad? It is my favorite theme this year! I don’t care for the insect guys, but I love the Galaxy Squad vehicles! The Space Marine could very well be the next LEGO Space theme after Galaxy Squad though. 😉

  • Chris October 24, 2013, 9:29 AM

Is there any instructions for this? i know i have all the parts to build this.

    • admin October 24, 2013, 11:15 AM

Chris, you mean for the Exo-Suit? I’m not aware of any instructions being available, but the awesome news is that this is going to be an official LEGO CUUSOO set! I’m planning to write about it this weekend. So if you just wait a little you can own the set soon! I have heard the release will be mid-2014. 😉
