2013 LEGO sets: LEGO Lord of the Rings

There have been rumors and low quality pictures circulating of the 2013 LEGO Lord of the Rings sets for quite some time now, but with the Toy Fairs behind us we can finally see what’s coming in their full glory. So let’s take a closer look. (Click images for larger view.) 🙂

#79005 LEGO Lord of the Rings The Wizard Battle  – small set featuring Saruman and Gandalf the Grey in their great battle. Price: $12.99

#79005 LEGO Lord of the Rings The Wizard Battle

Here are the details of the set – nothing fancy, but it does include both of the great wizards as well as the Eye of Sauron.

#79006 LEGO Lord of the Rings The Council of Elrond – Nice small set with some wonderful minifigures, two being exclusive to this set. Includes 4 minifigures: Elrond, Arwen, Frodo, and Gimli. Price: $29.99

#79006 LEGO Lord of the Rings The Council of Elrond

Below is a close-up of the Council of Elrond. I believe the high white arches are new, as well as the leaves in dark orange. It will be worth picking up several of these for the parts and minifigs.

And here are two of the loveliest minifigures in this series: Elrond and Arwen Evenstar. Frodo is the same as before but with a new face and no cape.

#79007 LEGO Lord of the Rings Battle at the Black Gate – Fly the Great Eagle high above the Black Gate of Mordor where Aragorn and Gandalf the White must distract the Eye of Sauron. Use them to stage a scene while Frodo Baggins and his friend Sam throw the One Ring into the fiery depths of Mount Doom and destroy it forever. To reach the Ring’s final destination, you must defeat the Mouth of Sauron and the Mordor Orcs positioned high in the spiked gate walls. Then breach the gate and lead the attack on the enemy! Includes a Great Eagle and 5 minifigures: Aragorn, Gandalf the White, Mouth of Sauron, and 2 Mordor Orcs. Price: $59.99

#79007 LEGO Lord of the Rings Battle at the Black Gate

Here is a close-up of the Black Gate along with the awesome eagle and the minifigures. This will be another set worth buying a couple.

Unique to this set is the Mouth of Sauron, and here is also a picture of Gandalf the White, and Aragorn in Gondor armor.

#79008 LEGO Lord of the Rings Pirate Ship Ambush – Aragorn gained the help of the King of the Dead and his army of dead soldiers. With their assistance he was able to take over the corsairs of Umbar and used their ships to help Gondor and Rohan. Includes 9 minifigures: Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, King of the Dead, two Soldiers of the Dead, Pirate of Umbar, and two Mordor Orcs. Price: $99.99

#79008 LEGO Lord of the Rings Pirate Ship Ambush

Here is a close-up of the ship – well it is a big ship, so it is hard to get all the awesome details in one picture, but it gives you an idea.

#79008 LEGO Lord of the Rings Pirate Ship Ambush Details

And here are some of the unique minifigures to this set; the King of the Dead, a couple of Soldiers of the Dead, and a Pirate of Umbar.

#79008 LEGO Lord of the Rings Pirate Ship Ambush Minifigures

LEGO has done it again with this wave of Lord of the Rings sets. All of them are really outstanding. The only thing I would have wished for is that Soldiers of the Dead to have glow-in-the-dark helmets and armor as they were kind of glow-ish in the movie. But that is just a very minor detail. Otherwise I’m very happy with these sets. How about you? What do you think of the new Lord of the Rings sets? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below. 😉

Oh, yes! These are awesome sets! The only problem is there is only four sets.

  • Nace10 February 23, 2013, 10:13 AM

    We need Mount Doom!

    • Ninjoey February 23, 2013, 10:56 AM

      aye! that we do!

      • Strider February 23, 2013, 12:13 PM

Not before a huge Minas Tirith.

  • Ninjoey February 23, 2013, 10:57 AM

    • Ninjoey February 23, 2013, 11:02 AM

      • Me February 23, 2013, 11:14 AM

        Yes, agreed!

  • NRGkai February 23, 2013, 11:02 AM

the eagle in the Battle at the Black Gate looks sweet!!!

    • Ninjoey February 23, 2013, 11:04 AM

i don’t like the fact that it has a plate stuck to its feet. they should have made a buildable one like the ninjago dragons! still, those wings look usefull!

      • Darth Awesome February 25, 2013, 4:35 AM

yeah, thats a bit of a bummer…still good though!

  • Legohead511 February 23, 2013, 11:25 AM

Is it just me or are Elrond and Aragorn both wearing two capes?

    • admin February 23, 2013, 12:11 PM

Yes, it does look like that. This is not the first time though LEGO used double capes, so it wouldn’t be out of line for LEGO to do that. 🙂

    • Jimbo Demarios March 25, 2013, 6:12 PM

well, it”s just cape with two colors.

  • Strider February 23, 2013, 12:10 PM

Is it just me or are the newer sets a bit better? I want all of these, the big ship not so much, maybe I can pick up a few army of the dead guys off bricklink. The wizard battle and the council of elrond are my favorites.

  • Ben Dodson February 23, 2013, 12:13 PM

I was hoping for the tower of Isengard (Orthanc) in this wave based on a few leaks but these sets are still great. I’ll definitely be getting 2 x the black gate.

  • Dr. Inferno February 23, 2013, 12:39 PM

“Here are the details of the set – nothing fancy, but it does include both of the great wizards as well as the Eye of Sauron.”

    Actually, that’s the Pilantir.

    • admin February 23, 2013, 2:08 PM

Yes, I know, but I didn’t want to get too technical. 😉

  • studless February 23, 2013, 1:19 PM

did anyone notice that the pirate is peter jackson.

you fun fact of the day 😉

  • Crazybricks February 23, 2013, 2:47 PM

    who is Peter Jackson

    • Strider February 23, 2013, 3:16 PM

Lets just say we wouldn’ t be looking at these sets if it were not for him…he directed the movies 🙂

  • Crazybricks February 23, 2013, 2:51 PM

Well any way I think the wisard battle is a little small and boring but thats the only set I don’t care for my favorite is the Pirate Ambush set

    • Strider February 23, 2013, 3:17 PM

I was happy that the wizard set had as much pieces as it did. Plus, we get the Palintir, and two awesome wizards. And for me at least those yellow lamp pieces seem pretty good.

      • Melissa March 16, 2013, 1:53 AM

Supposedly we were also getting Treebeard and the Balrog (2 different sets), and Orthanc is coming later this year. ?

        • admin March 16, 2013, 10:30 AM

Melissa, yeah, the Treebeard and Balrog sets kind of died out as far as any news on them. Orthanc is still rumored to be a summer exclusive. 🙂

  • pythor953 February 23, 2013, 3:39 PM

I’m very glad we are getting Saruman at last and he is in such a small set, it’s impossible to not get him. I personally love this wave of LOTR and can’t find any flaws. the only obvious annoyances are the scenes that haven’t been made into sets yet.

  • Micho February 23, 2013, 6:53 PM

YES!!! I love the Council of Elrond set, my plans are to get at least two. The Pirate Ship as I mentioned before will be converted into Sao Feng’s Ship from POTC3, and I plan to Bricklink the minifigs to bring my price down, they should fetch around $35 to $45. I have to agree with what someone said,, Wave 2 of LOTR is much much batter than the 1st wave.

    • Strider February 25, 2013, 12:37 PM

That was me. Council of elrond is my favorite too.

  • legostuff71 February 24, 2013, 4:44 PM

I thought there was going to be a tree beard set as well as a balrog set? Is going to be third wave of lord of the rings?

    • admin February 24, 2013, 7:47 PM

Information on those sets have completely died down. I really hope they will be available in a future wave though. 🙂

  • Frank February 25, 2013, 9:28 AM

Wow, these sets look awesome! 😀

  • crawley awsomeness February 26, 2013, 8:09 PM

THIS IS SO COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my mom said she may get me the battle of the black gate and wizard battle. p.s. my birth day is in the summer …thats when they come out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • admin February 27, 2013, 12:55 PM

Lucky you with a summer birthday! Some of the best LEGO sets always come out in the summer! 😀

  • ike February 27, 2013, 10:45 AM

    They MUST make barad-dur!

  • crawley awsomness February 28, 2013, 10:29 AM

i know rhight ! thanks for that comment admin.

  • I HAVE ALL THE HOBBIT SETS!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀 😀 😀 YAY!

  • I LOVE these new sets! though….i really what the new star wars sets from episode 2! 🙁 hard decisions…..hard decisions….

    • fred March 16, 2013, 7:51 AM

I would go with the LOTR ones. In Star Wars, I mean, face it, it’s not like they’re not going to remake it, is it? Seriously?

  • velamin March 10, 2013, 12:58 PM

    It’s cool

  • KingOfMiddleEarth March 10, 2013, 3:51 PM

AWESOME!!!! I love the Battle at the Black Gate!

  • fred March 16, 2013, 7:50 AM

I love all these sets. Personally, I’m glad they made the Army of the Dead minifigures like they did, because I hate glow-in-the-dark LEGO elements, especially on minifigures. I will almost certainly get one of each set, and possibly two of the Black Gate for more Mordor Orcs and a symmetrical -symetricall, symetrical?- Black Gate with two towers. The Eagle is good, and can be used for the Hobbit: Attack of the Wargs set. Who here has read the LOTR books?

    • admin March 16, 2013, 10:29 AM

Fred, good points. I’m sure many people will pick up several of the Black Gate sets. It just makes sense. I know a lot of people don’t like the eagle, but I do. I think it is nicely done. I read all of the LOTR books. They are some of my most favorite books of all time. Just couldn’t put them down! I also read The Hobbit but I don’t think I ever finished. It was just not as epic as LOTR. 🙂

  • Zach March 18, 2013, 12:22 AM

This is so epic I can’t wait as soon as it comes out I’m gonna buy them

  • crawlwy awsomeness March 27, 2013, 4:23 PM

I think LEGO should make more hobbit sets. mabe be the part with trolls. p.s. Im not talking about Lord of the Rings but LEGO neds to make a LEGO rhinoceros!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • DX ZX KENDO NRG PWR JAY-MOUTH OF LIGHTNING April 7, 2013, 9:31 PM

there will be more hobbit sets this winter 😉 probably for the next movie 🙂 But i want them to make alego elephant with the red paint in the lord of the rings 😀 btw, I love the new LOTR sets!

    • Meneldur son of Garamar May 2, 2013, 7:25 PM

I want an oliphaunt too! I built one once out of spare bricks but I hated it so I took it apart and built a huge cave troll. But if Lego does come out with an opliphaunt set, it should definitely come with some Haradrim, a Rohirrim (Eowyn in Rohirrim armor would be spectacular) and they should include merry in Rohan armor as well.

      • coriander July 9, 2013, 1:03 PM

A nazgul with the witch king would be brilliant with it

  • The ship set has some nice minifigure parts. I love these new sets!

  • Niels May 4, 2013, 12:15 PM

When will they make Old Man Willow, Glorfindel, Tom Bombadil, Goldberry, Fangorn, a Balrog, a flying Nazgul, Eowyn. Some do not appear in Mr Jacksons films, does that disqualify them? I guess so.

    • Meneldur son of Garamar May 4, 2013, 2:39 PM

Nice ideas though! They could be great MOCs!

  • Hunter63 May 15, 2013, 1:32 PM

I think my first one would be the Council of Elrond

  • Jimmy Bob June 5, 2013, 7:52 PM

They need to make battle packs like lego star wars

  • Marcel June 20, 2013, 5:28 PM

I would love to see a set of Barad-dur with Isildur, Elendil, but notably a Sauron action figure as opposed to an eye (though maybe a removable eye at the top of the tower would be pretty sweet. That would be awesome sauce in my opinion.
