LEGO wiki – from Brickipedia to Brickimedia

Many LEGO fans use the LEGO wiki called Brickipedia as a LEGO news and information reference site, especially in regards to new LEGO sets coming out. In case you are not aware of this project, Brickipedia is a free online LEGO encyclopedia founded back in 2006 and written collaboratively by its readers known as Brickipedians. The site is a wiki, meaning that anyone, including you, can edit almost any article. 🙂

LEGO Brickimedia

A major downside of Brickipedia however has been that it is hosted on Wikia which plastered completely irrelevant ads all over the pages. This didn’t just create a distasteful design but also made the site extremely slow to load. Even if Brickipedia had useful information to offer to the LEGO fan community the above problems created a very unpleasant experience, so much so that LEGO fans started avoiding the site altogether. The Brickipedia team has been aware of this problem and decided to move the project over to a new platform called MediaWiki, which is much less intrusive and much nicer to look at. The address of the new site is Brickimedia.org.

LEGO Brickipedia

One of the issues the Brickimedia project team is facing is that it’s actually impossible to delete or completely close the old Brickipedia site. The content is owned by Wikia and cannot be removed, nor can it be advertised that the wiki has been moved over to a new platform. (Clever business-model by the way; have a bunch of enthusiastic fans slave away to populate a website with quality information that will rank high on search-engines, then cover the pages with ads to make money. Not my cup of tea, but yeah, it works for some people.) 😐

To make it very clear; the Brickimedia project team transferred all content of the LEGO wiki over to the new site, and they will no longer maintain and update the old site. They are also reaching out to LEGO forums, fan-sites and blogs to spread the word that the LEGO wiki has moved and the only way to continue getting high-quality and updated information is to visit the new site. Again, the new address is Brickimedia.org. If you like to use the LEGO encyclopedia, please bookmark and use this new address.

LEGO Message Board Wiki

Besides reading and editing LEGO news and information, there is a bunch of other fun stuff you can do at Brickimedia. Rather than being a single wiki, it is instead a collection of five LEGO-centered wikis with a central meta-wiki connecting them all. The five wikis are all accessible from the navigational bar at Brickimedia.org and are as follows:

  • Brickipedia – LEGO wiki/encyclopedia
  • LEGO Customs – wiki for fan-made LEGO creations
  • LEGO Stories –  wiki for LEGO fan fiction/stories
  • LMB Wiki – very large wiki about the LEGO Message Boards
  • LEGO CUUSOO – wiki about anything on LEGO CUUSOO

If you are interested in checking out the above LEGO wiki projects or partake in them visit Brickimedia.org. If you have any questions feel free to ask them in the comment section below. There are several Brickimedia project members who hang out here and they should be able to help you out and answer your questions. 😉

Yeah, that’s nice feeling when you contribute something, isn’t it? 🙂

I love chatting with other LEGO fans as well, Jay. And it does feel great when you contribute stuff, Admin. Wow! Jay, you have the longest name on TBB I’d say. Maybe I should rename myself: Cole Ninja of Earth Son of Lou NRG DX ZX Samurai-like PWR Ninja of Awesomness and Ninja of Strength like the Hulk(seriously: I have strength like the Hulk). What do you think?

        • ninja of steath June 7, 2013, 12:56 PM

I think you should. that would be cool. I like my name though. I use ninja of stealth for every username I have! most of the time. not all the time. most of the time.

You’ll regret it eventually…Typing that would be far too bothersome. By the way, admin, did you get my e-mail about Irregular webcomic? If not, Could you please send an email to me?

          • admin June 7, 2013, 1:04 PM

Fikko, yes, got your emails. Sorry for not responding. Having been dealing with computer troubles. Ordered a new one and they totally messed up my order so I have been spending all my free time on the phone. Yeah, frustrating. But, yeah, I got your emails and I’m thinking of posting your article on Monday, as that’s a good discussion day. 😉

        • admin June 7, 2013, 1:05 PM

Naw, Jay is the only one who can have a long name like that. He earned it. 😉

I’ve never heard of brikimedia or however you spell it. sounds interesting… hmm…..

  • Gabriel June 7, 2013, 1:30 PM

I’m an avid fan of AdBlockPlus, so I never really noticed the problems on brickipedia. But I did know it was plastered in ads, so it’s good they’re packing up to a new domain. I’ll make sure to update my bookmarks.

UPDATE FOR ALL LEGO FANS: I just went on Lego.com and they have now improved the Ninjago site. There is a new game for Ninjago….the Final Battle. It’s addicting! 🙂 Also, the LOTR site has new designer videos and has the new products out. I don’t know why the Siege at Helm’s Deep game has vanished of the site but you can get to it if you click on games at the top of the Home page. And there is now new character bios on the LOTR site as well. Oh yeah! I also found out that the Black Gate has a secret passage for the Orcs. It’s at the base of the tower. Watch the designer video on it and see for yourself! 😀

    • admin June 7, 2013, 5:45 PM

      Nice! 😀

      • Fikko3107 June 7, 2013, 11:49 PM

        NEW DESIGNER VIDEOS! Fikko3107 Likey!

  • Darkon June 7, 2013, 10:37 PM

Great article! Brickipedia is the best! I’ve always used it for gathering imformation on new sets. It’s definitely the most reliable resource for all Lego news. Starting in October of each year, I go on Brickipedia every day to see if there’s any news on the January Lego sets. They always have acurate prices and sometimes even photos, months before the sets are actually released! 🙂

    • legosw June 9, 2013, 2:52 PM

      you know it bro

  • brickhoarder June 7, 2013, 11:35 PM

Between this move and the potential updates for Bricklink since being bought by Nexon, glad to see how well the community really sticks together!

    • admin June 8, 2013, 10:48 AM

Yeah, that’s another thing I really need to write about; Bricklink being bought. Will do early next week so we can discuss. 🙂

  • Meiko June 8, 2013, 12:43 PM

Thanks for posting this! I myself am a Brickimedia system administrator and developer (my user page), so feel free to ask me any further questions about the projects and/or network. 🙂

    • admin June 8, 2013, 2:35 PM

Meiko, thanks, I’m glad you stopped by. 🙂

  • Håkan June 13, 2013, 6:55 AM

I had massive problems with the Captcha, for some reason. Could’t do any edit since the Captcha just reloaded. I’m using Chrome.

    • admin June 13, 2013, 10:10 AM

You mean on Brickimedia? Because I don’t use Captchas here. 😕

      • Håkan June 13, 2013, 10:13 AM

        Yeah, exactly. On Brickimedia.

        • admin June 13, 2013, 10:18 AM

Meiko should be able to help you out with that. If Meiko doesn’t respond here just let me know and I will send an email directly. 😉

        • Meiko June 15, 2013, 2:55 PM

We’re aware of this problem and are working on finding the easiest solution without dropping our anti-spam functionality altogether.

          • Håkan June 15, 2013, 3:39 PM

Thanks for your reply. For some reason, I can’t see any “submit” button in relation to the Captcha.

I’m an admin, myself, on a comics-related Wiki, so I know very well about the problem with spambots. They’re a nuisance!

  • Greyfur June 13, 2013, 11:15 AM

I disagree, Brickepdia fine is alright when you create a acount. Brickmedia is ZERO. :/ I’m new here so I’ll be looking for good artcles! 😀

    • admin June 13, 2013, 11:57 AM

Greyfur, nice to have ya! I’m not sure what you mean by Brickimedia being ZERO. It is run by the same team who started Brickipedia, and because of the problems with the platform they are switching over to a new home for the website. However because they can’t just shut down the old one, nor can they make an announcement there, they are reaching out to LEGO websites and forums to let the community know. They will no longer be maintaining or updating the original Brickipedia so it will likely become irrelevant on its own. 😉

    • Greyfur June 20, 2013, 7:47 AM

Ya. But I just dislike the layout of brickmedia. Brickepdia is AWESOME!!!! Also I go by Greyfur there aswell, and I am the awner of two wikis, please join!!

When I checked it out recently, I got the message that a hacker attack has left all content deleted. Ouch! Hope there’d be a backup…

    • admin June 18, 2013, 9:48 PM

Yeah, it is sad. Hackers can cause so much damage. Just in the last few months I know of three LEGO sites that have been hacked. And not to speak of other sites. Even big websites like government sites, Paypal, etc. get hacked. For the hacker guys this is just a game; destroying people’s work that so much work and time goes into. They don’t think about that there is a person at the other end who’s livelihood depends on their website. 🙁

      • Håkan June 19, 2013, 9:38 AM

I think there are a lot of different reason why hackers act the way they do, ranging from naive to malicious. A game, getting respect among their peers, finding classified information, increasing awareness of security problems, petty crime and attempts to earn cash etc. etc. There is no single reason. Some of them seem paid by various governments and corporations to hurt or steal information from their enemies.

        • admin June 19, 2013, 10:00 AM

Yeah, that’s exactly what my developer says (the guy who protects us from hackers – or know what to do in case we do get hacked). It’s still scary. A blogger friend of mine was hacked a couple of months ago. It took two weeks to get his site back up and running. He is married and has two small kids, with his wife staying home with the children. No website for two weeks meant no income for two weeks. That can be devastating to a young family like that. Anyway, I wish all hackers peace. 🙂

          • Håkan June 19, 2013, 2:31 PM

Yeah. I know. Particularly since we conduct so much business online and enter so much private information nowadays. Play it safe, guys!
