LEGO Lone Ranger sets on sale!

As you might have heard by now, the Lone Ranger movie tanked – badly. Disney is expecting to loose at least $150 million on the film. Of course this wasn’t a surprise. A couple of years ago a similar film, Cowboys & Aliens, flopped as well. I have no idea why they keep pushing these Western-themed films; today’s movie-going crowd is just not as enamored with cowboy movies as previous generations. They should have known that… 😕

LEGO Lone Ranger Sets on Sale

For LEGO fans however this is not so bad news; it just means that the LEGO Lone Ranger sets are going on sale! And, as you know, LEGO did a wonderful job on these sets! The design, the selection, the colors, and the minifigs are all really sweet. So if you are into Western, you will love the sets, and even if you are not, the dropping prices will allow you to pick up some nice parts and minifigs on the cheap for your own LEGO creations. Oh, and don’t forget about that lovely train!

The LEGO Lone Ranger sets are currently on sale on Amazon, and you can also expect local retailers to clear them out soon as well. At Amazon you get free shipping for orders over $25 and no tax to most states, plus the convenience of not having to go shopping. 🙄

LEGO Lone Ranger Constitution Train Chase

Please keep in mind that prices on Amazon fluctuate quite a bit, so sale prices can be even better by the time you read this. Sets can also sell out quite fast, but I expect LEGO Lone Ranger sets to be around until the end of they year before they fully sell out at various retailers. Once the theme gets fully discontinued prices will rise again on the secondary market. I think these sets will be great-resellers; especially the stagecoach and the train. 🙄

What do you think? Are you planning to pick up any LEGO Lone Ranger sets before they get discontinued? How about getting extra copies for yourself or for investment purposes? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below! 😉

Benny, I don’t think the film is that bad, but I also enjoyed Cowboys and Aliens. They are not epic films, but they are enjoyable for watch. Have fun! 🙂

      • ninja of stealth August 11, 2013, 12:38 PM

(I’m going to talk professional people!) agree. both those films where outstanding! I enjoyed the lone ranger more. though the cowboys and aliens was pretty entertaining. but you have to agree with me that the john carter was despicable! nobody can jump that far. (and on mars? what?) I don’t want to offend anybody and if I do I am deeply sorry.

        • Willc August 11, 2013, 2:40 PM

I saw John Carter and thought it was underrated. One problem is that it’s based of the series of books that pretty much created many of common cliches, and by extension, the movie suffered as well (ex. the gladiatorial arena scene in Attack of the Clones) I find it funny that you took offence at one of the more explainable parts of the movie (martian gravity is less than earth’s because Mars is about half the size) rather than the aliens and magic portals.

Westerns do not do well, but in my opinion neither the Lone Ranger or Cowboys and Aliens were real Westerns. The lone Ranger was morel like Pirates of the Carribean in the West and if you like that and don’t mind that it’s good.

Finally, but this is the second time in recent history that a Disney summer flop had great Lego tie-ins. Prince of Persia did the exact same thing.

  • Chi-bacca August 11, 2013, 10:30 AM

I like the silver mine so I might get that but I can’t really be bothered to get any others I’m more of a sci-fi fan than a western. Anything mechanical I like 😀 I also quite like castles and temples and stuff. A high-tech castle with giant robot guards would be my ultimate set! 😀

    • admin August 11, 2013, 10:51 AM

Hm… we have quite similar tastes. I thought I was the only one who likes such different themes. I’m also a castle and mech/robot fan at the same time. 😛

      • Chi-bacca August 11, 2013, 12:25 PM

        Great minds think alike 😀

      • Chi-bacca August 11, 2013, 12:26 PM

Oh and I also liked cowboys and aliens. So even more alikeness 😀

      • Håkan August 11, 2013, 3:58 PM

I’m building a castle MOC now, and might be trying my hands on a Mocie-mech after that. I need some time to warm up, and improve on my skills first, though.

        • admin August 11, 2013, 7:36 PM

Awesome! Keep us posted on how you castle is going! And your mech! 😛

          • Håkan August 11, 2013, 8:11 PM

I’ve just built the foundation so far. I try to keep it compact enough to look believable, yet open enough to be playable. I haven’t been building any seriously for the last few years, so it’s a stumbling, bumbling process where I try to find improvized solutions whenever a problem appear. Not very original, possibly, but MOC images on the Internet makes it look so easy.

            • admin August 11, 2013, 8:32 PM

Yeah, it can take a while, but I believe with LEGO the journey is just as enjoyable as the destination – if not more. I have spent endless nights staying up late designing and re-designing LEGO projects; working on paper, in LDD, with LEGO bricks… it is a fun and rewarding experience. And it feels so awesome when you figure out something and make it work! 😛

  • Tom August 11, 2013, 10:41 AM

No sales in the uk. Will get the carriage when on offer and probably 4-5 of the silver mine for parts only…

    • admin August 11, 2013, 10:52 AM

Tom, my understanding is that the movie just came out in the UK, so it makes sense the sets are not yet on sale. However if the film flops there as well expect the sets to be on sale in a month or so. 😉

      • Tom August 11, 2013, 1:38 PM

Yeah no hype here yet. Not my cup of tea but I know a few afols who are army builders and excited about these…

    • benny the padawan of the grand army August 11, 2013, 4:41 PM

iv spotted lone ranger sets in lots of uk stores like the entertainer and lego stores. if u live in the north west of england go to the lego discover centre shop iv been in, nearly all of lone ranger sets

      • Tom August 11, 2013, 5:40 PM

        • benny the padawan of the grand army August 12, 2013, 4:09 AM

supermarket discounts are good!! i got the alien conquest mothership reduced from £49.99 to £19.99!!

  • Chi-bacca August 11, 2013, 12:28 PM

Disney has done a lot of “flopping” films recently. John carter and now this! I wonder what they’re gonna do to Star Wars 🙁

    • ninja of stealth August 11, 2013, 12:41 PM

oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you for reminding me of that! I’M FREAKING OUT RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’M A HUGE FAN OS STAR WARS! so all I have to say about that is, NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Chi-bacca August 11, 2013, 12:48 PM

Don’t you mean: “Luke, I am your father!” ” NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!” 😀
Star Wars fans unite! Oh and random fact- the new films are going to be made in England!! I would be happy but most of it will be green screen so it kinda defeats the point 🙁

      • admin August 11, 2013, 1:25 PM

Yeah, I was just about to say the exact same thing! 😕

    • benny the padawan of the grand army August 11, 2013, 4:44 PM

me and alot of proper star wars fans know disney wrecked star wars appart from putting new film that will have mara jade in!!! they stopped the clone wars which was on a high and stoped alot of star wars games being made 🙁

  • ninja of stealth August 11, 2013, 12:31 PM

do you know what funny? when it was my birthday I got the first one you talked about (and it went on my cake) and I got the stagecoach escape, and the silver mine shoot out, witch I traded in for the lone ranger train! witch is a very nice set I might add. and the stagecoach is recommended by me! those two sets get my stamp of approval.;)

  • Chi-bacca August 11, 2013, 1:21 PM

Hey admin, I just followed (or whatever it’s called) you on google+ I’m under the name of Boba fett. Just so you know. 😀

    • admin August 11, 2013, 1:25 PM

Yeah, saw that. Love your avatar! 😉

  • Tom August 11, 2013, 1:30 PM

That sounds about right I’ve not seen much hype. For me I see this as a parts only theme but I know a few western fans as afols who will have a ball with these 🙂

  • Legoman640 August 11, 2013, 2:04 PM

Good news everybody! The Chima and Ninjago sets are finally over here! It’s pretty cool, but it’s so expensive!!! $60 for a for the Jungle Gates Speedor set?

    • admin August 11, 2013, 7:35 PM

Are you serious???!!! That is very expensive! 😕

    • Chi-bacca August 12, 2013, 11:12 AM

Well……..that’s only slightly overpriced 😀 but in all seriousness that is a big rip off! the lone ranger stagecoach costs 50€ which is the same as the gorrila mech in Ibiza! Oh and all the tenner sets are 20€ so pretty expensive stuff in Ibiza. The lion temple was a good price though 98€ when it’s £100 with the conversion rate it’s quite a bit cheaper (maybe £10 difference)

  • Håkan August 11, 2013, 3:55 PM

I haven’t seen Lone Ranger, myself, yet. I might see it when it comes on cable. I could enjoy dumb action flicks as long as they don’t feel purely as a vehicle for stunts and effects.

I think the film could be compared to Gore Verbinski’s last film, Rango (also a Western-ish flick with Johnny Depp in a leading role) which performed better than expected both financially and commercially, and likely played a great part in allowing Verbinski free reins with this project.

Rango was darker than I expected, though, sort of a Chinatown with a happy ending. I prefer watching English movies subtitled, but this was dubbed in Swedish, which might have dampened the experience a bit.

  • Chris of Yoda Archives August 11, 2013, 5:51 PM

Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully they’ll still have some after payday.

    • admin August 11, 2013, 7:37 PM

Yeah, LEGO should give us free money so we can spend it on the sets we want. It would be a win-win… I think… 🙄

      • Håkan August 11, 2013, 7:59 PM

Doesn’t make less sense than most economic theories I know about…

        • admin August 11, 2013, 8:30 PM

          LOL!

        • Chi-bacca August 12, 2013, 12:11 PM

          True……..unless your china! Lol

  • Peter August 11, 2013, 6:18 PM

The only one of these I have is the train — and I’d highly recommend it if you are into Lego trains. One nice thing is that it comes with an oval of track — straight and curved pieces, not the “flexible” track that a lot of people don’t like. The locomotive is nice (the main reason I got this set) — it’s similar to the Toy Story locomotive from a few years ago, but this one is a bit more elaborate (less Toy-story-ish, of course), and in nice greens and browns. Note that the locomotive is not designed to be motorized; it’s just not large enough to fit a motor and battery pack, though some people on the net have been able to make it work with considerable modifications.

I bought this at retail when it first was announced, but ordered from Target with 5% redcard discount (so basically, $95). I notice that Target.com now has lowered the price to $85 (matching Amazon’s price.) So for those who prefer Target for any reason, you can get it there also, and remember the 5% extra discount if you use their card. I’m actually tempted to collect another one at this price.

As of today, the other Lone Ranger sets don’t appear to be on sale at Target — just the Train.

    • Peter August 11, 2013, 6:22 PM

Sorry for the typo — delete the “l” in ” l straight and curved pieces” — I don’t think I can edit an existing message. (I have been reading this forum for a while but am new to posting).

Anyway, the track provided is just enough to make a full circle (16 curved pieces) + 4 straight pieces (so to make an oval, you put 2 on each side of course). But this will work with other Lego track, so of course if you already have some, this will add to your collection. (except no power support as the older 9V track, of course.)

      • admin August 11, 2013, 7:42 PM

Fixed the typo for ya! Yeah, the tracks are a great addition to this set! 🙂

    • admin August 11, 2013, 7:41 PM

Peter, thanks for sharing! Yes, the train looks really nice. Interesting that you mention the similarities between this and the Toy Story train! That was also a great train, but the colors were a bit too bright to pass as a real train. This one is much nicer in this regard. It’s a shame it can’t be easily motorized, but LEGO fans are a creative bunch, so I’m sure they will figure it out. I do remember seeing motorized versions of the Toy-Story Train. I’m sure before the end of the year we will see greater and greater discounts on these sets. And yes, Target is also a good place to look! 😉

    • Chi-bacca August 12, 2013, 11:16 AM

I believe the brick show did manage to motorise it.

  • ntk743 August 12, 2013, 12:17 PM

My parents went to see it and they said it wasn’t very good. They said it was strange. 😐

    • Håkan August 12, 2013, 5:10 PM

Many of the current movies tend to be strange. The script doesn’t hold together since it’s mainly used as a vehicle for stunts and special effects. I saw “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, and the storyline felt like “A Dark and Stormy Night”…

      • Beardless Dwarf August 12, 2013, 9:32 PM

I just watched that movie last night. I thought it was pretty cool and I don’t mind action movies with not much story and plenty of action and stunts. Anyway I liked the movie.

        • Håkan August 12, 2013, 10:26 PM

Well, to each his own opinion. Apparently, the film was meant as a catalyst for the character, so that might have played a part in how it turned out. At least Hugh Jackman did a decent performance despite most of the storyline being over the top and all over the place… I heard the new Wolverine film was better and had a straighter story, so I might like that more.

  • Beardless Dwarf August 12, 2013, 9:34 PM

I haven’t seen the movie yet; I’ll wait till it comes into the nearby video store and rent it but I really like the sets. I want the Cavalry builder and the Stage Coach (it has a lot of the new horses :D). I would like to get the train but I don’t really build LEGO Trains and such but it does look really neat.

  • Shadrax the Overlord August 15, 2013, 11:14 AM

Doesn’t really matter to me, I not a big fan of western-style stuff.

  • George August 16, 2013, 9:03 AM

I don’t think it flopped because it is a Western but because they wanted to copy/paste Pirates of the Caribbean to a western setting.

There have been some good and successful Western style movies in the last years : Django unchained, appaloosa, 3:10 to Yuma just to name a few.

    Let’s hope they don’t tank Star Wars…

    • admin August 16, 2013, 9:07 AM

George, intesring observation. Thanks for sharing! Yeah, I also really-really hope they don’t mess up Star Wars! 😕

    • Håkan August 16, 2013, 4:01 PM

Django Unchained and 3:10 to Yuma seems nice, although DU might be a bit lengthy. I also like old westerns by directors such as John Ford, Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah.

    • Beardless Dwarf August 17, 2013, 2:07 PM

Amen! I really hope this doesn’t happen to Star Wars and I’m very disappointed that Lone Ranger took the place of POTC sets….ah well.

  • Chris of Yoda Archives August 16, 2013, 1:16 PM

I was going to order a set today. But my walmart just marked down some LEGO sets. Bag End, a $70 set, was signed $49. I look at it cause that’s a good price and found a $25 sticker on it. I had to get it.

    • admin August 16, 2013, 1:52 PM

Bag End was $49??? That’s a great price for a wonderful set!

  • Chris of Yoda Archives August 17, 2013, 1:04 AM

The sign above it read $49. But after closer inspection it had a $25 price tag on it. I asked to make sure that was the correct price. They said yes but cashier will have to ring it up.
The also had the riddles set for $7. And the Doc Ock set on clearance. I don’t remember the Doc Ock set price as I wasn’t a set I really wanted.

    • Håkan August 17, 2013, 2:16 AM

Doc Ock set is US only. Very expensive in Europe as it is an import.

    • admin August 17, 2013, 7:27 AM

      That’s amazing! Great find! 😛

      • Chris of Yoda Archives August 28, 2013, 9:33 PM

Bag End is built. Might be my favorite set. Also ordered the Stagecoach set. too bad it won’t arrive till after Labor Day.

        • admin August 29, 2013, 11:21 AM

Those are two wonderful sets! You got great taste! 😀

  • Shadrax the Overlord August 17, 2013, 4:24 PM

Disneys movies on western have all failed. Why do they keep trying?
