LEGO Mindstorms Ultimate Useless Machine

The new LEGO Mindstorms set, the #31313 LEGO Mindstorms EV3 has been released this month, and some LEGO robotics fans are already playing with it and building awesome robots. We have talked about the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 before so I won’t repeat the details (see: A New Generation of LEGO Mindstorms!), but I wanted to show you a fun machine LEGO fan Jason Allemann built using his LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kit. 🙂

#31313 LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Available Now

In the following video Jason showcases his custom designed Ultimate Machine (also known as Useless Machine) built using one LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kit. He calls it the LuuMa Ev3. The video is titled; Jason vs. The Ultimate LEGO Machine (LuuMa EV3). Check it out!

Really fun, isn’t it? Jason is well known for his mechanical LEGO creations (you can check out his YouTube channel for more videos). He says the following about the LuuMa EV3: “I had a lot of fun with this one, especially programming the various responses. It’s a little bit more elaborate than the traditional Ultimate Machine; featuring 6 different responses for turning the switch off, and 2 evasive maneuvers for trying to prevent the switch from being turned on in the first place. Step by step instructions for building the core (which only uses parts from the #31313 LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kit) can be found on my website, TrueDimensions.com, along with the Mindstorms project file for running the program. I haven’t provided instructions for building the box, as it really is pretty much just a box.”

If you would like to build your own Ultimate Machine from LEGO, or build other LEGO robots, I highly recommend you check out the brand new LEGO Mindstorms EV3. LEGO and robotics is a great combination! See more details at the Online LEGO Shop: LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3

What do you think? How do you like the LEGO Mindstorms Ultimate Machine Jason built? Have you tried out the LEGO Mindstorms kits? Did you ever built and programmed your own robot? Feel free to share and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

Cool! The Mindstorms Ev3 kit is extremely awesome! Would this Jason Allerman be the same Jason who does the Brickshow reviews?

    • admin September 23, 2013, 11:37 AM

He is a different Jason, Jason Forthofer and his brother are the guys running the BrickShow. 😉

    • Fikko3107 September 23, 2013, 11:45 AM

      I…Highly doubt that.

Yeah, I’m getting ready for the Hobbit sets to be released. Also I’m writing a post on some LOTR MOCs on Cuusoo. There’s two that would be awesome as sets including an oliphaunt. 🙂

            • ninja of stealth September 24, 2013, 12:34 PM

when I saw the spider I said “what?! aah!!!!!!” it was shocking to see a SPIDER tribe 😯

  • JediToa September 23, 2013, 11:32 AM

Why is it it called the ultimate useless machine?

    • admin September 23, 2013, 11:38 AM

Useless Machine, or Ultimate Machine are actually scientific terms with a long history. You can look them up on Wikipedia. I inluded a link in the article. 😉

      • ninja of stealth September 23, 2013, 12:24 PM

        yeah, scientific… I knew that. (not really 😕 )

  • Chi-bacca September 23, 2013, 4:19 PM

Why is it that when I don’t have internet the cool info gets leaked!!! Spider and scorpion tribe pictures!!! Seriously?! Well At least I have 30 mins to check it out 😉

    • ninja of stealth September 24, 2013, 12:35 PM

don’t worry chi-bacca it doesn’t just happen to you… *sigh*

  • Carbo September 23, 2013, 7:41 PM

Admin, I’m the one who has been sending you the series 11 reviews. You will probably receive part 3 Wednesday or Thursday. Part 4 may take awhile, because I need 4 more Minifigures to complete the series. Also, have you seen General Cryptor from the LEGO Ninjago 2014 line? He is awesome! 😀 If not, the image is from BricksandBloks.com.

    • admin September 23, 2013, 9:00 PM

Carbo, nice to have ya! I’m posting the first part of your review on Wednesday. The second part should be posted the following week. As you know, there is just so much news to cover, so there is no rush with the last two parts. As far as General Cryptor, there is actually a current listing on eBay. I have been trying to bid on him, but the price is going too high. I may still write a post about him in the next few days. Looks really awesome! 🙂

      • benny September 24, 2013, 2:19 AM

if u read some comments on the brickipedia post it says that some proto-types get released months before. someone even said they got chi battles early, but with different mini-fig as they are proto-type

        • Meneldur son of Garamar September 24, 2013, 9:46 AM

Just checked out the General Cryptor minifig. That is cool. The hood is spectacular. Is it just me or does Ninjago seem to be getting more “mech-ish” and robot-like?

          • admin September 24, 2013, 10:37 AM

Yes, the next wave of Ninjago is going to be focused on cyborgs. Which I think is awesome! 😀

            • ninja of stealth September 24, 2013, 12:38 PM

CYBORGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CYBORGS ARE THE BEST THING SCINCE SLICED BREAD!!!!!!!!!!!! I’M NOT KIDDING! hey do you know what I heard on the news! they are making cyborg cockroaches to save peoples lives from any type of catastrophe! you know, its hard to kill cockroaches and they are small… witch I found pretty insane! 😈

              • admin September 24, 2013, 1:18 PM

Oh! Now that is bizarre! Here in Florida we have these giant roaches… I don’t know if I would want to be saved by them. I think I would just scream and run in the opposite direction. 😈

              • Fikko3107 September 25, 2013, 6:47 AM

To be scientific, they’re known to be very hard to kill not because they’re tiny, but because they can still live for a while without their heads, and their physiology makes them able to come out of a nuclear explosion completely unscathed. Those are just two of a list of reasons why roaches may become the dominant species in a post-apocalyptic, nuclear-ridden earth…

Anyways, I’ve seen the fig. LEGO really needs to protect their factories better. I’ve only been in this hobby for like, 3 years, and I’ve already seen 3 leaked minifigures! Anyways, I hope there’s a galore of small-to-medium sized mechs with interesting building techniques in the reboot. I know this sound pretty stupid, but the only robot-related, non-bionicle sets I have is a couple of exo-force sets and Lex Luthor’s Power Armor….

                • ninjao stealth September 25, 2013, 12:33 PM

they can live without there heads for awhile.
                  8-0 that is very… odd.

        • admin September 24, 2013, 10:36 AM

Yes, prototyes are an important part of the manufacturing process. But make no mistake; prototypes don’t get “released” to the public. They are stolen. Mostly from the LEGO factory in Mexico. Note that all leaked minifigs listed on eBay are from Texas, right accross the border from Mexico. 🙁

  • Carbo September 23, 2013, 8:36 PM

    Nice video! 😛

Interesting machine. I can see that working as a very good boredom cure. (Click. Bzzz. Click. Bzz.) On second thought maybe not for to long.

    • admin January 3, 2015, 10:41 AM

I just checked Jason’s website and the PDF is loading fine for me. I would suggest you try again. I know that PDF’s have a hard time to open if you happen to be on a slow connection. Hope this helps! 🙂

Whenever I open the link for the program, a new tab pops up showing a lot of symbols. Why? And where is the program?

    • admin March 29, 2018, 3:26 PM

Hm… the program file should be opened within the EV3 software, not in your browser. Does that help?
