2014 LEGO Star Wars MicroFighters

Let’s talk about something unusual today: the upcoming LEGO Star Wars MicroFighters series that is scheduled for release in 2014. The LEGO Star Wars MicroFighters are replacing the LEGO Star Wars Planets series in the small Star Wars sets category. The LEGO Star Wars Planets sets included a minifigure, a planet, and a micro-fighter. A cool feature was that you could actually pack the whole set inside the planet, making the LEGO Star Wars Planets highly collectible pocket sets. There were 12 sets within the LEGO Star Wars Planets series (some are still available), and while they were really fun, I guess LEGO decided that it is time to replace them with something else; so enter the LEGO Star Wars Micro Fighters! 🙂

2014 LEGO Star Wars Micro Fighters

The LEGO Star Wars MicroFighters are chibi-size sets, meaning that they are small, cute-ified versions of Star Wars ships, that can still fit a minifigure. This is not the first time LEGO has released midi-size sets, but previously they were commemorative sets released at special events. Anyhow, let’s take a look at the LEGO Star Wars MicroFighters in detail then we can discuss how we like them. There are 6 LEGO Star Wars MicroFighters scheduled for release next year. Below are the pictures of each of them (images from the Brickset database).

#75028 LEGO STAR WARS CLONE TURBO TANK – A Clone Trooper riding a Turbo Tank. This one reminds me of little kids on those plastic push-cars.

#75028 LEGO Star Wars MicroFighters

#75029 LEGO STAR WARS AAT – A Battle Droid driving a mini AAT. Actually this one appears quite believable as a real tank (albeit small) and doesn’t look too chibi-ish.

#75029 LEGO Star Wars MicroFighters

#75030 LEGO STAR WARS MILLENNIUM FALCON – Han Solo riding on top of a tiny Millennium Falcon like he is on a carousel-ride! Now that I think about it, most of these sets look like carousel-rides! 😀

#75030 LEGO Star Wars Micro Fighters

#75031 LEGO STAR WARS TIE INTERCEPTOR – A TIE Fighter Pilot navigating a small TIE Interceptor. This set also looks fairly believable. I think what we see here is that when the minifig actually fits fairly deep inside the vehicle then the whole set-up doesn’t look so out of proportion.

#75031 LEGO Star Wars MicroFighters

#75032 LEGO STAR WARS X-WING FIGHTER – This is my favorite set within the series. What can be cuter than a miniature X-wing?

#75032 LEGO Star Wars MicroFighters

#75033 LEGO STAR WARS STAR DESTROYER – An Imperial Crew Member driving a very-very-very small Star Destroyer. I guess if it would have been this small in the real story, there would be no Star Wars saga…

#75033 LEGO Star Wars Micro Fighters

Initial feedback on the LEGO Star Wars MicroFighters has been quite mixed. Some LEGO fans like them, and some find them ridiculous. Personally I believe that they definitely have more play-value than the LEGO Star Wars Planets sets; there you basically got three components (a minifig, a planet and a micro-sized fighter), that were way out of proportion to each other and couldn’t really interact. Here, although the vehicles are small, the included minifigure can ride them – which means more fun and playability. I actually like most of the sets in the series, especially the X-wing and the TIE Interceptor, and I would really like to see a Snow-Speeder too! 🙄

And while we are waiting for the release of the LEGO Star Wars MicroFighters,  you can also check out the remaining sets from the LEGO Star Wars Planets series at the Online LEGO Shop.

I don’t really think they need to have these. I mean, they’re funny, but why can’t Lego just do regular sets?

    • admin December 8, 2013, 2:01 PM

These are in addition to regular sets. Having some pocket-size sets are always fun. And not everyone has the money and space to get the big sets. I like small sets like these to doodle with on a lazy afternoon. 🙂

      • lego ff December 8, 2013, 3:44 PM

Ok. By the way, is there a Chima post coming up ?

        • admin December 8, 2013, 4:26 PM

Wasn’t planning on one, but I could write one. We haven’t talked about the new animal tribes yet in the new sets. So yeah, maybe next week?

          • lego ff December 8, 2013, 4:53 PM

Thx. Have you seen For Chima? It really forshadows “the dark tribes”. Also, I didn’t know Lavertus was a good guy. I thought he was evil. 😎

            • admin December 8, 2013, 9:18 PM

Yeah, I have seen Episode 20 “For Chima”. It was interesting, especially the end where the dark tribes and the land outside of Chima are mentioned, and the captured Legend Beasts! Looks like the animal tribes are finally going to stop fighting and focus on a common enemy!

                Cragger becomes good now!

    • ninja of stealth December 9, 2013, 12:06 PM

Okay? This is a little strange? 😕 not really my thing I guess.

is it just me or does Han Solo look really old.

  • Fikko3107 December 8, 2013, 11:06 AM

A lot of fans are going to criticize the unholy number of flick missiles…especially since they’re created by sacrificing possible aesthetics, for example, making the droid tank’s guns flick missiles, or insisting on putting a pair on the TIE Interceptor.

    • Droffig December 8, 2013, 6:27 PM

Yeah flick missiles are annoying and they kind of hurt your finger nail. I think these sets are cute i want the Millenium Falcon or the X-Wing.

    • LK2 December 9, 2013, 1:15 PM

Star Wars is NOT my favourite theme, but, the AAT is cool!

  • Håkan December 8, 2013, 11:09 AM

I find these sets ridiculous, but I like them…

    • Håkan December 10, 2013, 4:40 PM

Of course, I also often enjoy turkey movies and such as well… The ridiculous often has a sublime, endearing aspect to it.

  • Carbo December 8, 2013, 12:18 PM

Personally I really like these. My favorite is either the Milennium Falcon or the Clone Turbo Tank.

  • Rose December 8, 2013, 12:42 PM

I’ll pick up at least the Millennium Falcon for my desk – but I’ll replace the head with one from Cows vs Pigs. Or maybe Skulls.

    • admin December 8, 2013, 1:51 PM

      LOL! That’s too funny! 😆

      • Droffig December 8, 2013, 6:29 PM

        How much will these cost?

        • admin December 8, 2013, 9:18 PM

My guess is that they will be the same as the Planets sets.

          • Ryan February 14, 2014, 6:11 PM

            8.99

  • tenny1028 December 8, 2013, 1:17 PM

This might be a Christmas preset for my brother. When do they come out?

    • admin December 8, 2013, 1:54 PM

As far as I know we won’t see these until next year, but yeah, they would make great Christmas presents.

      • Håkan December 8, 2013, 2:03 PM

They don’t seem to contain that many rare pieces, though. If you’re an experienced builder, you should be able to replicate something close from the images.

    • lego ff December 8, 2013, 5:14 PM

They are coming out in Jan. .

  • Rose December 8, 2013, 1:59 PM

I find some folks lack of faith in this set disturbing.

  • David FNJ December 8, 2013, 4:07 PM

I think the AAT will be the most useful for me pieces wise…but I can’t guarantee that I’ll be picking one up :/ They’re okay.

  • Carbo December 8, 2013, 6:52 PM

I may have to build a carousel to hold all of these! Although it would have to be big… 🙄

    • admin December 8, 2013, 9:19 PM

LOL! That would be really fun!

  • David December 8, 2013, 9:14 PM

I do find them really cute and I see myself getting a few (X-Wing, TIE Interceptor and Millenium Falcon).
The Star Destroyed looks a bit ridiculous though.

    • admin December 8, 2013, 9:21 PM

Yeah, those are the ones I like too. I think the issue with the Star Destroyer is that although it is minimized it is not cutified like the other ones, so it just ends up being ridiculous – as you said. It is actually not that easy to build chibi! 😉

  • lego trooper 91 December 8, 2013, 9:20 PM

i really like these sets 😀 the one that i want most is the millennium falkin becuse i dont have honsolo 😎

  • The Yellow Ninja December 9, 2013, 7:05 AM

Wow, I’ll have to be sure to get some of these. You know, I’d love to see someone use these in an moc carousel! The only problem is that they don’t seem very proportional.

  • Chris of Yoda Archives December 10, 2013, 1:36 AM

These are kind of funny. I’ll get the Millennium Falcon, it’s one of my favorite ships. More than likely I’ll get the x-wing too.

  • Thelegofreak December 10, 2013, 3:54 PM

The only set here I would get is the AAT. I think it could maybe pass for a full sized vehicle. I’m not big on the other sets though.

  • Thelegofreak December 10, 2013, 3:58 PM

how do I change my profile picture?

    • admin December 10, 2013, 8:32 PM

Go to gravatar.com to set up your avatar. It is very easy to do and it will magically appear here as well once you set it up. 😛

  • Chi Worriz December 12, 2013, 4:07 PM

Hey um is it me or does the x wing in it behind Luke is a r2 unit cool lol it really does :p

    • admin December 12, 2013, 6:45 PM

What I have read is that’s actually not Luke in the X-wing, but another guy… forgot his name…

    • LegoDude December 14, 2013, 9:44 AM

That’s Theron Nett, or Red Ten.

    • Håkan December 14, 2013, 12:12 PM

If I remember my Star Wars correctly, it’s the R2 units that motorize the X-Wing ships, and that they can’t fly without them.

  • Håkan December 14, 2013, 12:23 PM

    From the Star Wars Wikia:

An astromech droid, also referred to as an astro droid, was a type of droid that served as an automated mechanic, performing a variety of repair duties and often serving as an adjunct or substitute for a nav computer on smaller starships. Astromech droids could also use the mainframes of larger ships to their advantage. Many starfighters relied on astromech copilots.

I have the AAT, I like it. most of the lego sets are available in Singapore.

  • mike February 23, 2014, 7:21 AM

I have just brought the whole set as price value is awesome and I love starwars. I had a few of the planets but they are more showcase and less “fun” . I completely agree about star destroyer micro fighter but plan to buy a further 3 or so sets in order to extend it and make it a little bit more beleivable/superior. Watch this space I guess….

    • admin February 23, 2014, 9:32 AM

Mike, love to see what you come up with as far as an extension! 🙂

  • LEGO LOVER March 8, 2014, 10:22 AM

I hope that they make a micro AT-AT!

  • strang3r9 April 1, 2014, 2:11 AM

Hi guys, just wonder… where to get the sets? I went to Toy R Us in United Square, didn’t find any…

    • admin April 1, 2014, 10:44 AM

I would suggest to call them and ask when they are expecting them to be in. My TRU have been having them for weeks. And you can of course also get them at the Online LEGO Shop.

      • strang3r9 April 4, 2014, 5:08 AM

I’m from Singapore, does the Online LEGO Shop ships to Singapore? I cant seem to get through the checkout process…

        • admin April 4, 2014, 9:09 AM

I just checked and it doesn’t appear to be that they ship to Singapore. You would need to switch regions, but the only Asian country I could pick is Korea. There are some third-party websites that serve Singapore though.
