2014 LEGO sets – London Toy Fair report

All right, it is time for the Toy Fairs! As you probably know already, January/February of every year is when the various large international Toy Fairs happen; first in London, then in Germany, then in New York. Why is this important for LEGO fans? Well, because this is the time when LEGO themes and sets for the new year get revealed! 🙂

2014 LEGO - London Toy Fair

The London Toy Fair is the first one on the list. LEGO doesn’t allow any pictures/videos to be taken at this event as many of the new sets and minifigures are still in prototype stage. However this is still an important event as participants can get a good idea of all the news sets and themes. A couple of weeks later at the German Toy Fair, and even later at the New York Toy Fair, pictures and videos are allowed on some of the new products, and usually by this time most of the sets and minifigures are finalized for the year.

2014 LEGO Booth - London Toy Fair

So although we don’t have any pictures yet, let’s talk about what has been revealed at the recent London Toy Fair. Thanks to Huw from Brickset, Barry from BrickFanatics and Graham from AllAboutBricks, who have attended the event, we can at least get a description of what they have seen (again; no pictures/videos was allowed). So let’s begin!

The sets displayed at the Toy Fair didn’t have any names yet, but there will be a Smaug similar-sized to the standard LEGO Castle dragon. The Witch King minifig glows in the dark. There will also be a set featuring another part of Laketown, and a couple of other sets, but we will have to wait to get a better description.

As far as the story goes, apparently a crack has formed in the earth’s crust and the Chi has fallen into it. • #70728 LEGO Ninjago Battle for Ninjago City – $119.99

2014 LEGO TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES SETS: There are going to be two different TMNT series (three if you count the one set coming out in the LEGO Juniors range). 2014 LEGO MIXELS: We have discussed these fun little characters before extensively so I won’t repeat that information here (see links at the end of this post), but the point is that all 27 LEGO Mixels from the first three series were displayed at the Toy Fair. The first series features red, yellow and black creatures, and the later series include purple, lime green, blue, brown, orange characters. Series 1 will be released in March, Series 2 in June, and Series 3 in September. These will be highly collectible cheap little sets only costing a few dollars each. There will also be a TV show related to the characters on Cartoon Network.

2014 LEGO CITY SETS: The LEGO City Arctic theme will be released this summer. The story has to do with looking for crystals in the Arctic ice. There will be new polar bears, new huskies, and new snow-shoes. The color scheme is mainly orange with some blue. There are also three LEGO City Train sets. According to what I have read from participant of the Toy Fair they aren’t particularly impressive.

  • #60032 LEGO City Arctic Snowmobile – $6.99
  • #60033 LEGO City Arctic Ice Crawler – $14.99
  • #60034 LEGO City Arctic Helicrane – $39.99

2014 LEGO TECHNIC SETS: Three sets will be released this summer; a bulldozer, a 4WD pickup truck, and a Volvo-licensed remote-controlled trench-digger (the biggest set of the three).

2014 LEGO FRIENDS SETS: This time the girls are heading for the jungle, which should be an interesting setting, hopefully with even more animals. Speaking of animals, the small LEGO Friends sets will include a Seal, a Lion and a Panda.

  • #41030 LEGO Friends Olivia’s Ice Cream Bike – $9.99
  • #41031 LEGO Friends Andrea’s Mountain Hut – $9.99

  • #41058 LEGO Friends Heartlake Shopping Center – $109.99
  • #41059 LEGO Friends Jungle Tree House – $24.99

2014 LEGO CREATOR SETS: Creator is usually not the most exciting theme, however it is the closest of what LEGO is all about with alternate building models and lots of basic elements. They are also a good way to learn interesting building techniques. According to participants at the Toy Fair, the Bike Shop set looks particularly interesting with lots of internal details and a foldable layout.

  • #31023 LEGO Creator Yellow Racers – $29.99
  • #31024 LEGO Creator Roaring Power – $29.99
  • #31026 LEGO Creator Bike Shop & Café – $89.99

2014 LEGO COLLECTIBLE MINIFIGURES: The next series of Collectible Minifigures will be based on The Simpsons and will be available in May. The series after that will be featuring characters from the upcoming LEGO Minifigures Online MMO Game and will include a code to unlock the character in the game.

2014 LEGO JUNIORS SETS: Juniors sets are kind of in between DUPLO and LEGO Creator for younger builders. They come with a lot of pre-made parts and sections that are easy to put together, while still allowing some free-building with regular LEGO elements.

  • #10669 LEGO Juniors Turtle’s Lair – $19.99
  • #10671 LEGO Juniors Fire Emergency – $19.99
  • #10676 LEGO Juniors Knights’ Castle – $49.99

2014 LEGO DUPLO SETS: DUPLO is for little kids, but it is interesting to know how many licensed themes are included this year. I guess we have to get those kiddies started early! Some adults (including myself) also enjoy LEGO DUPLO sets. They can be easily mixed with regular LEGO and they are great for building up some impressive large structures fast!

  • #10526 LEGO DUPLO Peter Pan’s Visit – $29.99
  • #10528 LEGO DUPLO School Bus – $19.99
  • #10538 LEGO DUPLO Planes – US$29.99
  • #10539 LEGO DUPLO Beach Racing – $24.99
  • #10543 LEGO DUPLO Superman Rescue – $19.99
  • #10544 LEGO DUPLO The Joker Challenge – $29.99
  • #10545 LEGO DUPLO Batcave Adventure – $49.99
  • #10568 LEGO DUPLO Knight Tourney – £8.99
  • #10569 LEGO DUPLO Treasure Attack – $29.99
  • #10577 LEGO DUPLO Big Royal Castle – £49.99
  • #10579 LEGO DUPLO Clubhouse Cafe – $12.99
  • #10580 LEGO DUPLO Deluxe Box of Fun – $49.99

And that’s all for today! Plenty to digest and think about. What do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss the 2014 LEGO sets in the comment section below! 😉

What? No LotR/Hobbit? That’s too bad. Maybe there will be some at one of the next fairs.

    • admin January 27, 2014, 12:46 PM

There are Hobbit sets coming as I have mentioned in the article above. But no LOTR.

  • DX ZX KENDO NRG PWR JAY-MOUTH OF LIGHTNING (Seriously i have a mouth of lightning) :) January 27, 2014, 11:46 AM

  • Kim January 27, 2014, 12:42 PM

Ooo can’t wait for the pictures. Agents sound potentially cool and I’m excited about the online MMO, if not for the game but for the minifigures. Also the Creator Bike Shop & Cafe. =D Great coverage! Thank you!

    • admin January 27, 2014, 12:48 PM

Kim, yeah, I’m also interested in that Creator set. So far what I have read from people who saw it, it looks really good. BTW, love the name of your blog! I guess LEGO stands for the pursuit of happiness part, which sounds about right.

      • Kim January 27, 2014, 4:30 PM

Thank you! Lego is definitely the pursuit of happiness! =D

        • Fikko3107 January 28, 2014, 5:55 AM

I’m rather pleased with the original Agents theme. Well, all I have is one Agents 2.0 set, and even that is bought in the aftermarket. I like the design, but I hate the fact that the stickers on the turbine seems to fall off so easily-I think something to do with the fact that it moves extensively and fights the wind…

          • admin January 28, 2014, 11:27 AM

I really liked the original Agent sets too. It had a really great color sceme and the sets were excellent! However according to Huw from Brickset the new line is nothing like the original. Same characters, but he was not impressed with the colors or the sets themselves. 🙁

    • ninja of stealth January 28, 2014, 12:19 PM

      too bad I don’t live near one of these… *whimper* so… far…away… 🙁

  • ninja of stealth January 27, 2014, 12:42 PM

YAY!!!! not that I’m excited I’m anything… alright! I am looking forward to Cyclops, storm (X-men is one of the coolest things ever!) I already have a magneto so yeah, and the ninjago sets!!! maybe there will be Ed, Edna, Lou, and dareth in the battle for ninjago city set!!! the marvel, star wars, and ninjago sets are the best! and also AGENTS WILL BE BACK!!! “woo hoo I have (got? I don’t remember.) happy feet!” -Cole.

    • admin January 27, 2014, 12:49 PM

We should be able to see what minifigs come with the sets at the German toy-fair, and if not definitely the New York one. Ed and Edna would be nice to have! 🙂

      • ninja of stealth January 28, 2014, 12:20 PM

when are the German and the New York toy fairs? 😕

        • admin January 28, 2014, 1:21 PM

The German Toy Fair is January 29th – February 3rd, and the New York Toy Fair is February 16th-19th. 😉

  • Brick addict January 27, 2014, 2:43 PM

I CANT WAIT TO GET SMAUG! 😀 and agents will be awesome! cant wait to see pics!

  • Majestic Kai Fan January 27, 2014, 2:53 PM

It sounds like Chima is stealing two of the ninjago elements, these new sets again sound like lego has an excuse to keep the theme running. Also Chima sounds a lot like thunder cats with these new tribes. I’ve seen pictures of the ice mammoth, the mammoth mini figs are strange. I saw a pic of battle for the city, it’s got the new version of Samaurai X.

    • lego ff January 27, 2014, 4:29 PM

      Where did you find those?

      • Majestic Kai Fan January 28, 2014, 12:29 AM

The youtube channel Lego Leaks Mexico

  • Micho January 27, 2014, 3:30 PM

WOW!! Chima sounds loke it’s going to have tons of new cool molds and minifigs, too bad I never started collecting since the beginning 🙁 … I don’t have a single Chima set.

  • bibi67 January 27, 2014, 3:48 PM

“[…]the good news is that LEGO is planning to continue Ninjago through 2015 (and maybe even beyond) .” Rumor or it’s true ? Where did you find this ?

    • admin January 27, 2014, 4:12 PM

It has been reported by those who have attended the toy fair. I assume the information was given to them by LEGO’s representatives who were there to interact with participants.

  • Micho January 27, 2014, 3:50 PM

Can I be the first to suggest a LEGO Looney Toons License??? Who would not want all those sets??? With the new Chima, TMNT, and Simpsons molds LEGO has made me believe that anything is possible. They already have a working relationship with WBs and their DC Universe.

    • admin January 27, 2014, 4:14 PM

Yeah, that would be really sweet! And it would also be appropriate as a LEGO license. 😀

  • BLProductions January 27, 2014, 4:11 PM

I can’t wait! I want the Star Wars B-wing, some of the City Arctic, but I don’t think I will be able to get any Ninjago. 🙁 I don’t really like that the next minfig series is being the Simpsons.

BTW, if anyone wants to know the US pricing for the Agents sets, go to Brickset for 2014.

  • gid617 January 27, 2014, 4:42 PM

Interesting that LEGO dropped the Speedorz price to $13…
The City arctic sets sound nice. Reminds me of the Arctic Exploration rumor last year…
I wouldn’t have thought that Agent’s was popular enough for LEGO to bring it back. I’m interested in seeing those…
The LEGO Mixels also look like they’ll have some nice pieces!

    • BLProductions January 27, 2014, 7:11 PM

Yes, the Mixels come with a few new pieces that so far can only be found on the Chima legend beasts.
Mostly small ball joints and a 1×2 plate with 3 teeth.

  • darkon January 27, 2014, 4:59 PM

I’ve seen pictures of the Star Wars sets on Youtube as well as the Queen Beast from Hero Factory. The summer Hero Factory sets do actually contain new pieces, specifically the egg sacks that the monsters hatch out of! The Hoth sets from Star Wars include new snow trooper figures! The helmet is now a separate piece from the backpack! I can’t wait until these come out! 😀

  • Andy at www.smallplasticbricks.com January 27, 2014, 6:47 PM

As a City builder, it doesn’t sound like “Artic” could fit into an urban area too well. I’m not sure why they market it under the City name. Also, this is the end of the collectible minifigs for me. Lego seems to be using them as a promotional tool rather than unique and creative figs that could be used in any layout. Not impressed with this year’s offerings so far.

    • admin January 27, 2014, 7:54 PM

Andy, as far as the Collectible Minifigs, although I agree that it is disappointing that we aren’t getting any unique figures like before, I think it was time for LEGO to tone down a bit churning out all those new moulds. As far as I know they are very expensive. I think we all knew that sooner or later LEGO will have to incorporate them in regular sets, otherwise they wouldn’t make financial sense. I dont’ care for The LEGO Movie packets, nor for the Simpsons, but I’am looking forward to the series related to the Minifigure MMO game. I think that will be a good one. At least I hope. Also, I heard through the rumor vines, that there may be one more series this year, that will be a regular series (not tied into any theme or game). 😉

      • Kim January 27, 2014, 8:24 PM

The movie figures weren’t my favorite either but some of them do have potential. The ones that I particularly gunned for that I decided to specifically get from theminifigurestore.com because I wasted close to $20 on dupes last series, were President Business, if for nothing else, the Octan emblem mug, Larry the Barista for a good coffee house employee, and Taco Tuesday for a Taco truck build. As far as the rest of President business, I may give him a different hair piece and head and make him my own character since I like making my own Lego characters.

        • admin January 27, 2014, 8:38 PM

Yeah, Im also basically looking at The LEGO Movie figures as potentials for parts. I do like the mermaid as she has a really sweet face and cute hair, so I would get her, and Larry is fun to have. Oh, and the Taco guy I think is better then the previous Mexican as his legs are printed. So there is some fun to be have, just not as much as with previous series.

          • gid617 January 27, 2014, 9:59 PM

Yeah, there are couple nice ones but most of them are kind of plain… I did like the Taco dude, even if he is a sort of “repeat character” he’s different enough to be worth it. The other two I really would like are the robot with the Daniel Boone outfit – he really looks great with a yellow face (my brother got one), and Shakespeare.
It did kind of make sense to do a series for The LEGO Movie but to do one for the Simpsons?

The game one should be good I would think too. Probably more of a normal series.

            • admin January 27, 2014, 10:11 PM

I think the reason for The Simpsons colectible series is because there is only going to be one Simpsons set (altough LEGO may change their mind if The Simpsons House performs really well). This way Simpsons fans have at least one set and all of the characters they would probably like to have. At least that’s my theory. 😉

            • Micho January 28, 2014, 10:11 AM

Don’t forget Panda Suit Guy, the reason I got him is because I have all the other “Suit” minifigures, I couldn’t skip on that one.

      • ninja of stealth January 28, 2014, 12:23 PM

what is the MMO game anyway?

        • admin January 28, 2014, 1:23 PM

MMO = Massively Multiplayer Online Game. It is basically a video game online that people can play together from all over the world and interact within the game. The now discontinued LEGO Universe game was an MMO.

  • awesome January 27, 2014, 7:59 PM

I know that some of you are VERY enthusiastic about the Simpsons, but I hate the Simpsons. I mean seriously, Lego, you have a line of freaking Lego Friends! And now the Simpsons?*

*This is just my opinion, so don’t rage.

    • Josdu January 27, 2014, 8:31 PM

      Yeah I agree!

  • Micho January 27, 2014, 8:24 PM

I FOUND MARSHA!!!! I went hunting today. First to my local TRU, but they only had 14 bags left, I only found one Wyldstyle and bought her, then I went to B&N, they had an almost full box but the minifigs were $4.95, I went through almost all of them and the first to the last was Marsha, I paid $5.35 after tax, but at least I bought peace of mind!!!

    • admin January 27, 2014, 8:28 PM

Oh! That’s great to hear! Yeah, mermaids are elusive, and when you do find one, you will have to pay the price! 😉

      • Micho January 28, 2014, 10:12 AM

I just wish that price had been $2.99 😀

        • admin January 28, 2014, 11:29 AM

I know. We all wish prices would be cheaper. I actually would love to see all your mermaids together! You should have quite a collection by now! 😛

          • Micho January 28, 2014, 4:33 PM

I will send you a picture with the Atlantis Set 😀

  • Josdu January 27, 2014, 8:29 PM

That sounds good! But is there no Castle? That would be a shame as this last time they were really cool!

    • admin January 27, 2014, 8:39 PM

Josdu, no Castle sets were seen at the Toy Fair. I have a feeling that LEGO may have decided that LOTR/The Hobbit is just too close to Castle and they may have put the line on hold. But I’m pretty sure it will be back as it has been a staple from the very beginning of LEGO’s history.

      • Håkan January 28, 2014, 7:10 AM

Also, there’s this Castle-themed set in the Movie theme.

        • admin January 28, 2014, 11:28 AM

Yes, good point. It is a cute little fort-like thingy actually. 🙄

          • Josdu January 28, 2014, 2:17 PM

Yeah, But some castle is just big pieces like that one has lots of. Still it cool that it converts 😉 !

  • splat12green January 27, 2014, 8:58 PM

Come to think of it the lego smaug would have to have a special arm mechanisim as smaug does not have arms like the dragon mountain set. but smaugs wings act as his arms. he can sort of slither around. the specil mechanisim would have to allow smaugs wings to flap and be able to grasp the ground all at the same time

Hm… all I can remember is that those who have been at the toy fair said that Smaug looks quite like a standard LEGO Castle dragon. There may be some differences, but at that scale it is unlikely it will have all the features of the real Smaug. Castle dragons do have a hole on their wing to attach a small horn piece that can act like a hook/claw to graps the ground/branches/etc. Anyhow, we should be able to see pictures soon! 😀

In fact the lego castle dragons should be more like the ninjago dragons

  • splat12green January 28, 2014, 12:18 AM

Oh but still. Wasent the smaug at london toy fair just a prototype
And just one more question. when will the german and new york toy fair so then others such aswell as myself will get to know when to look out for pictures and vids

    • admin January 28, 2014, 11:22 AM

The German Toy Fair is January 29th – February 3rd, and the New York Toy Fair is February 16th-19th. 😉

Any way from what you can remember from the sets what kind of minifigures do you think will come out based on the sets. also any idea on the price range

    • admin January 28, 2014, 11:24 AM

I have included most of the prices that were available. The minifigures were either absent, or there were only placeholders. Those are usually the last to get developed as far as things like final printing and details.

And also for those who are wondering what may have happened to the lord of the rings line i think i have an idea….the relase dates have been switched over. remember last year at the toy fair it was the lord of the rings sets on display and the hobbit later in the year. so hopefully we will see a. lotr wave in december.(thay had better make farimir, eowyn, gothmog and the witch king or i will throw a spaz which will turn me into gullom

    • admin January 28, 2014, 11:25 AM

Hm… you could very well be right. At least I hope so! 😛

From what I’ve seen, We’ve probably seen what the Marvel characters will look like, based on the LEGO Marvel Videogame. From the leaked pictures, Wolverine with a cowl looks the same in the set and the videogame. Though I doubt Storm gets her specialized cape. The GOTG members+Ronan might also look the same as the game…but about that, I’m less sure.

Also, from the new Hero Factory video, I think we have a good idea about what the Summer Sets will look like.

flying phoenix FIRE TEMPLE?! they could be a little more creative. but actually the Chima sets sound pretty interesting even though I am only a fan of the Chima sets, nothing else, okay? 🙄

    • Lloydguy January 29, 2014, 6:38 AM

Isn’t a fan of Chima someone who would buy the sets?

      • Håkan January 29, 2014, 9:55 AM

Depends on how much money the fan has. 😉

  • Debricker January 29, 2014, 9:33 PM

I wonder if anyone that was really good at drawing went there and drew out the sets and minifigs so detailed that it looked like the real thing

    • admin January 29, 2014, 10:31 PM

That would take quite a bit of talent and patience, but don’t worry, we will see pictures soon. The German Toy Fair is happening right now and pictures and videos are already emerging. I will wait a couple of more days to report on it, so we can have a comprehensive picture (the event wont be over until this weekend).

Although I think there are a few artists with eidetic memory that would be able to pull that off, it’d probably be technically illegal as well.
