The LEGO Movie – contests for everyone!

With the release of The LEGO Movie LEGO also launched a couple of fun LEGO contests you may want to participate in. There is something for all ages and skill-levels, so if you want a fun challenge and also win some prizes, here is your chance to be AWESOME! ๐Ÿ™‚

The LEGO Movie Emmet Awards

โžก For younger kids there is the Emmet Awards, a series of monthly contests that will test their imagination and building skills. This contest will run between February and July. Every contest will have five nominees chosen and there will also be an overall winner as well. And of course there are going to be some prizes too! There is not a whole lot more known as this point, but look out for further announcements at Emmet Awards website.

Emmet Awards Details

The first LEGO contest in the Emmet Awards series was just announced a couple of days ago. It is quite simple; just go to the Emmet Awards website and follow the directions. It basically involves arranging your favorite scenes from the movie, adding a cover and some audio clips and you are done. It is called the Direct Your Own Movie Contest.

โžก If you are sixteen or older and want something more challenging, there is also the Be The Special – The LEGO Movie REBRICK Competition. (REBRICK is LEGO’s own website for older LEGO fans.) This LEGO contest runs from February 10th until March 31st. It is an alternative build competition where you take an existing LEGO set and use the pieces to create something new and original. The catch? You can only use pieces from that set. The size of the LEGO set doesnโ€™t matter, or when it was released, so long as you only use parts from that set.

The LEGO Movie Contest

You can either take a picture of your LEGO contest entry, or a video. The top 10 models with the most votes or โ€œlikesโ€ by the REBRICK community will be entered into the semi-finals from which the judges will choose the first, second, and third place winners by mid-April, based on creativity, originality and relation to the chosen theme. The jury will consist of: Frederikke Hoff (Community Editor at the LEGO Group), Michael Fuller (Senior Designer at The LEGO Group who has worked on The LEGO Movie sets), and Chris McKay (Co-Director of The LEGO Movie). Just to get these people looking at your LEGO creation is an honor! ๐Ÿ˜€

Some other important rules besides that you can only build from one set is that you cannot use custom elements, and you cannot choose a set to rebuild from licensed IPs, such as Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. You can however use any LEGO Group created IP, such as LEGO City or LEGO Friends. You can use The LEGO Movie sets too. However using the LEGO logo anywhere in your creation will result in disqualification. You can read the full rules here: REBRICK CONTEST DETAILS

The LEGO Movie PR Tin

The prizes are also really nice. One grand winner will receive a prize of a limited edition gold-colored Emmet Statuette (not available in retail and only available though official LEGO competitions), an exclusive The LEGO Movie PR tin containing nine LEGO minifigures (pictured above – photo by CK Tsang), and a large The LEGO Movie set signed by the designer. The second place winner will also receive an Emmet Statuette, The LEGO Movie PR tin and a medium size set signed by the designer, and the third winner will receive the Emmet Statuette, tin and a smaller set signed by the designer.

LEGO ReBrick Logo

It would be really cool if some of our community members would enter the contests and show LEGO their awesome building skills! The first contest appears to be great for younger kids, and the second contest looks quite challenging for older builders! And the prizes are amazing too! What do you think? Are you planning to participate in either of these LEGO contests? Feel free to share in the comment section below! ๐Ÿ˜‰

First comment! I am planning on making my own movie. i built something out of the flying flusher my sister smashed, but it uses a few pieces from Ninjago.

    • admin February 16, 2014, 11:11 AM

I guess you might be able to enter that in the Emmet Awards. In the other contest they are very strict about using only pieces from one set.

      • Lloydguy February 16, 2014, 4:38 PM

yeah, of I was going to do the other one, I’d have to be older and Iwould take apart a set i currently have

  • LK901 February 16, 2014, 11:42 AM

the prizes for the Emmet Awards are awesome!!!!! So wish I could win the Grand prize ๐Ÿ˜›

    • Brian February 16, 2014, 11:46 AM

What are the prizes for them? I can’t find that part anywhere.

      • admin February 16, 2014, 11:55 AM

I’m not sure. I didn’t find any detailed info on it. Maybe LK901 has a link. I do vaguely remember somewhere that the prizes are going to be similar as at the other contest; meaning some The LEGO Movie sets and the Emmet statuette. But how the prizes are broken down by winners and grand-prize winners I don’t know.

        • Nicknak February 16, 2014, 12:55 PM

Monthly nominees: each will receive a limited edition Emmet statuette

Monthly Contest winners will receive all of the sets from the 1st wave, minus the exclusives

Grand Prize winner will receive the exclusive sets, wave 2, and the metalbeard ship and 19.6 inch tall Emmet statue.

yes, very excellent!!! bravo, bravo! I hope I at least get the small Emmet statuette. but if I got all the sets that would be sweet!!!! and might I say overwhelming so I would give some to my sis.

          • CrazyBricks February 16, 2014, 10:53 PM

wait grand prize gets all of the wave 2 sets and a 19.6″ tall statue of Emmet (If every thing is awesome than this sounds awesome! Awesome! AWESOME!!!!!)

            • Brian February 17, 2014, 10:38 AM

              Wow! That’s awesome! Thanks!

  • BLProductions February 16, 2014, 12:57 PM

I would like to enter ReBrick. I kind of specialize in building stuff out of parts from just one set, though I usually do sets with wing pieces so I can build Millennium Falcons ๐Ÿ™‚ . The prizes sound cool too! ๐Ÿ˜€

Also, my parents are actually taking us TO WATCH THE LEGO MOVIE!!!!!
    It’s gonna be AWESOME!!!! ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ 8) :p

    • BLProductions February 16, 2014, 12:59 PM

Hm… Those last smileys didn’t work. need to work on that. Here: ๐Ÿ˜Ž ๐Ÿ˜›

  • ninja of stealth February 16, 2014, 1:07 PM

i didn’t even know about that Rebrick competition! I might enter it! ๐Ÿ˜€

    • speedyninja February 16, 2014, 4:25 PM

Yeah I never heard of it either, I think I am going to enter!

  • DX ZX KENDO NRG PWR JAY-MOUTH OF LIGHTNING (Seriously i have a mouth of lightning) :) February 16, 2014, 1:33 PM

    Just entered! ๐Ÿ˜€

    • admin February 16, 2014, 4:44 PM

Good luck! May the Force be with you! ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • DX ZX KENDO NRG PWR JAY-MOUTH OF LIGHTNING (Seriously i have a mouth of lightning) :) February 16, 2014, 8:09 PM

        And also with you.

I wonder how they will pick 5 out of so many…

        • admin February 17, 2014, 10:03 AM

I’m not sure about that. Especially since most of them are so similar. You gotta find a way to stand out. ๐Ÿ˜‰

          • gid617 February 17, 2014, 12:31 PM

I would imagine that unless your’s really catches whoever goes over it’s attention it will get thrown out pretty fast… they’re probably not going to go over it multiple times.

      • ninja of stealth February 17, 2014, 12:24 PM

yes, may the force be with you. and speedyninja, that’s an awesome profile name! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Brick addict February 16, 2014, 2:01 PM

saw the movie last night and cant wait to own it! it was so funny and lots of awesome characters! i didn’t like the ending that well but it didn’t ruin the movie. over all it was one of the best movie i have seen in a while! (and i really liked how it looked like it was in stop motion) ๐Ÿ™‚ cant wait to buy Benny’s spaceship and Emmets mech! ;D

    • ninja of stealth February 17, 2014, 12:27 PM

yeah I felt the same way too brick addict. I just figured that world as another dimension or world so that president/lord business was in two dimensions/world but it wasn’t really connected but was (if this makes any sense.) I don’t know about you but it made me feel better.

  • BLProductions February 16, 2014, 5:35 PM

I just got back from watching the LEGO Movie! It. Was. AWESOME!!!!
Or most of it, the ending was kinda un-satisfying (but I won’t say why cause spoilers ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) ๐Ÿ˜•

I hate doing stuff with Lego.com b/c there’s always so many rules. I just read the ‘read more’ part of the contest page, and it’s so frustrating! ๐Ÿ˜ก My parents probably won’t give permission, though, and I (a) don’t like giving computers personal info, and (b) probably wouldn’t be able to do it anyways as I don’t have enough parts. Imagine that, a Lego fan with no Lego! …Great prizes, though! ๐Ÿ˜€

    • admin February 16, 2014, 6:33 PM

Yeah, the issue is that dealing with kids is a very delicate matter and can get a company into huge trouble. So they have to cover all their bases when they run a contest. Laws are very stricts in this regard. It is not LEGO’s fault. And as far as the laws, they are there to protect kids, even if they look annoying and bothersome. It is best to be safe than sorry. There are lots of badguys out there.

    • admin February 17, 2014, 10:08 AM

That’s really good! I like how you started with that Batman scene, and also it was so funny when the song changed right when Lord Business started talking! Good job! ๐Ÿ™‚

      • ninja of stealth February 17, 2014, 12:29 PM

I got two votes on mine so far! does anyone know how to search people so they can vote for them?

  • CrazyBricks February 16, 2014, 11:05 PM

I noticed that second prize gets a medium set signed by the creator would Benny’s spaceship set be medium sized but grand prize doesn’t sound bad at all

    • Hรฅkan February 17, 2014, 4:32 AM

Benny’s Spaceship looks a bit bigger than that. Aren’t medium-sized sets usually around 200-300 pieces?

      • YTjedi February 17, 2014, 4:27 PM

The official document for the Rebrick competition states the large, medium, and small sized prize sets to be valued at $250, $100, and $60. That being the case, those prices line up nicely with Metalbeard’s Sea Cow, Benny’s Spaceship, and Emmet’s Constructo Mech.

  • Fikko3107 February 17, 2014, 2:19 AM

I have just the perfect entry for the ReBrick one…This robot (duh) made completely from that Space Police III Container Heist set. Unfortunately, I’m not quite 16…

    • admin February 17, 2014, 10:08 AM

Maybe have your dad enter on your behalf? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • lego ff February 17, 2014, 8:49 AM

Just did the Emmet Awards. Also The press release of Metalbeards Sea Cow is there!

    • admin February 17, 2014, 10:09 AM

Yep, we are going to talk about that BIG SHIP today! ๐Ÿ˜›

  • gid617 February 17, 2014, 12:30 PM

I’ve thought about getting a Re-brick account a couple of times but this always confuses me, “You are an adult having reached the age of majority in the country from which you are accessing the Website.” (Terms of Service – yeah, I read those. ๐Ÿ˜› ) I guess that means over 16 in the US? Since it wasn’t explicit I never did anything…

And can ‘older kids’ enter both contests (in other words can I do the Emmet awards one?)

    • admin February 17, 2014, 2:25 PM

Gen, different countries have different rules on what is considered an adult, so that’s why the strange wording. Even in the USA each state is different. Some states are 18 and some 21. The point is that whatever country you are from when you are considered an adult and can get into a binding contract.

      • gid617 February 17, 2014, 11:59 PM

Yeah, I’ve always heard that it was 18 in most states (and in Chile as well)… which is why I’ve never signed up. So… does that mean I can’t until I’m 18 or just as long as I’m over 16?

        • Hรฅkan February 18, 2014, 4:28 AM

I can’t see any American states defining legal adulthood as being 16 years old. I don’t understand what you are referring to. That you have reached the minimum driving age (which in USA is lower than most other countries) doesn’t make you an adult.

          • Hรฅkan February 18, 2014, 4:34 AM

Aha. Now I get it. It seems you need to be 18 to get a ReBrick account, but an account shouldn’t be necessary to participate in the contest…

        • admin February 18, 2014, 9:50 AM

Well, it depends on which state you are. As your situation is unique because you travel and live in a different country most of the time, I would say it depends where you are when you sign up. But in most places it would be minimum 18. I don’t know any place (at least not in this hemisphere) where the legal age would be 16. As Hakan said, that’s only for driving. So yeah, you would have to be either 18 or in some states 21 to be considered an adult.

          • gid617 February 18, 2014, 4:55 PM

All right, guess I’ll wait another year! ATM I’m in MO, but that will be constantly changing over the next few months anyways.

I was aware that the 16 was only for driving, but as most Rebrick mentions that I’ve seen only specify 16+, I never was quite sure.
As far as being able to enter the contest without an account, every time I try to go to Rebrick it opens straight to the Create a Profile page!

            • admin February 18, 2014, 5:17 PM

Okay, so I have gone through all the ReBrick conditions and rules again. For the contest you only need to be 16 to register to the site and to participate in the contest, so you should be good to go. ๐Ÿ˜‰

“The building contest is open to all users 16 years and older holding a ReBrick account. The voting process is open to all users holding a ReBrick account.” – this is directly quoted from the contest page, and I have not found anything to contradict this. I don’t see what you mentioned that one has to be an adult either to participate in ReBrick or in the contest.

              • gid617 February 18, 2014, 6:15 PM

Well, it’s the first number under the fourth heading (Rules of Conduct) here:
                http://rebrick.lego.com/TermsAndconditions.aspx
was what I was quoting. (That link is what you have to check the box next to when you create a profile, and like I mentioned I can’t find a way to get around that.)

Sorry for all the trouble! If you think (given the other references that only mention 16+) it doesn’t make a difference, I’ll give the contest a go if I can find the time!

                • admin February 18, 2014, 8:53 PM

I see what you mean! Now that is bizarre! Looks like you have found a contradiction within their system! I’m going to let my contact person at LEGO know about this, because this is certainly not right. ๐Ÿ˜

                • admin February 19, 2014, 10:05 AM

Okay, I heard back from LEGO’s Community Department. This is what they said: “Thanks for reaching out, I can understand the confusion! To answer your question, children are welcome to sign up on ReBrick if theyโ€™re 13 years old or older in the US. The reason the language on Terms and Conditions is vague is because ReBrick is a global website, and we have to respect the different laws of other countries. Here in the US, the age a child can participate on a social media website is 13, but this differs in other parts of the world. Of course Iโ€™m not a legal expert on this, and am happy to get a more solid legal answer for you if youโ€™d like.”

                  • admin February 19, 2014, 10:11 AM

So, 13 to register to the site (if you are in the USA) and 16 to enter the contest. ๐Ÿ˜‰

                    • gid617 February 19, 2014, 12:23 PM

Okay! Makes sense! Thanks for going through all that trouble to clarify it!

                    • admin February 19, 2014, 12:28 PM

Gen, no problem, and you are welcome. For every person who asks this question there are thousands who don’t. So it was an important thing to clarify. And this was also good for me to know when others ask in the future. I’m a LEGO Ambassador so it is my job to help out the community. Not a real job of course, but I think I suppose to get a T-shirt at some point. ๐Ÿ™„

              • gid617 February 18, 2014, 6:27 PM

I just realized that I can browse Rebrick by hitting the cancel button on the create a profile page, but I still can’t bookmark anything.

  • Legoman640 February 21, 2014, 7:13 PM

    Definitely entering this.

  • liam April 9, 2014, 10:55 AM
  • Raelene Guernier April 17, 2014, 6:28 AM

Hi, Is this Emmet Awards only open to American citizens, or can my children in Australia enter (Australians) . Please someone help me out with this question.

    • admin April 17, 2014, 1:34 PM

Raelene, I see no restriction on LEGO’s website that the contest is only for USA citizens. There is only an age restriction to children. Adults can’t enter.
