LEGO Chima Legend Beasts review

Some of the most interesting sets in the LEGO Legends of Chima line (at least for more experienced LEGO builders) are the recently released Legend Beasts, so I thought to explore these small, inexpensive, but very unique LEGO sets today. 🙂

LEGO Chima Legend Beasts

It is interesting to note that the LEGO Chima Legend Beasts are quite different from the ones appearing in the TV show. When it was first rumored that the Legend Beasts will be released, pretty much everyone assumed that they will be made of pre-moulded larger shapes, like the LEGO dinosaurs or dragons. The reason for this being that while in the TV show the main characters and vehicles all pretty much look like they are made of regular LEGO elements, the Legend Beasts were representing real animals with organic shapes. This is because they were the ancestors of the Chima tribes in their original natural form, not enhanced by the power of the Chi, but possessing the raw power of nature.

LEGO Chima Lion Legend Beast

So it came as a surprise that the LEGO Chima Legend Beast sets actually contained brick-built animals. A lot of fans of the TV show are not happy with this, however those who were looking for an interesting building experience were rejoiced. Check out the video-series below by JANGBRICKS where he reviews each of the LEGO Chima Legend Beasts, and also gives his overall opinion on them to show you what I mean.

The lead designer for the LEGO Chima Legend Beasts was Mark Stafford working with a group of other talented builders on these sets. Mark is well known for his abilities for complex designs and interesting building techniques, so you know you won’t be disappointed. In addition, all of the LEGO Chima Legend Beasts come with some very useful new LEGO elements; new sizes and styles of “tooth” pieces, the new small ball-joints, and new printed elements.

LEGO Chima Eagle Legend Beast

Building animals from LEGO is never an easy task. To get five unique animals in this collection is a veritable feast for LEGO fans who would like to master the art of LEGO creature building. You learn how to build a bird, a reptile, a gorilla, and two four-legged animals in the series.

LEGO Chima Crocodile Legend Beast

Each of the LEGO Chima Legend Beast sets are only $10 and include a Legend Beast, as well as a minifigure. The sets should be available at most LEGO retailers by now, and you can also get them at the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? Have you picked up any of the LEGO Chima Legend Beasts yet? Which one do you like the most? And how do you like the new elements and building-techniques? Feel free to share and discuss in the comment section below. 😉

First comment! I like the eagle and the lion and the wolf (who looks like the girl wolf)

    • ninja of stealth March 10, 2014, 12:27 PM

even though I am not a fan of Chima, I got the lion legend beast and it is AWESOME! but when I built it I didn’t put the stickers on it, (speaking of stickers. the eyes weren’t stickers so that was a little “yay” celebration time 🙄 ) but maybe I should of, what do you guys think? 😕

  • Crazybricks March 10, 2014, 10:57 AM

I would buy the Lion and the Eagle if I liked Chima

Does any one else look at jangbricks every day or am I the only one

    • Chi-bacca March 10, 2014, 11:32 AM

No your not the only one, in fact I actually prefer him to the brick show but still watch both to get 2 views on a set.

      • Brick addict March 10, 2014, 11:45 AM

I also watch JANGBRiCKS channel. He is actually my favorite reviewer. And I also watch the BrickShow because they are friends of mine and they do a great job covering pretty much every LEGO set.

      • I don't know March 11, 2014, 11:03 PM

        BUT GORUZ KNOWS OTHERWISE!!!!!

        • Alex March 12, 2014, 9:22 AM

LOL! Did you see his crystal throne yet?

  • Chi-bacca March 10, 2014, 11:34 AM

I like these but I don’t know whether I’d get a couple of these or the mixels-what do you guys think? 😀

    • Brick addict March 10, 2014, 11:46 AM

i think the mixels r more fun in my opinion

    • ninja of stealth March 10, 2014, 12:22 PM

I would get the legend beasts, they’re fun to build and they don’t stare at you with those big bulging eyes. 😯

      • Brick addict March 10, 2014, 1:12 PM

but the eyes r the best part………..;)

        • ninja of stealth March 11, 2014, 12:13 PM

yeah but lest just say you sister/brother was going to play a trick on you, so this is what happens: you fall asleep, they sneak in you room and make it so its staring at you. (not to mention they pick the creepiest.) then when you wake up! well, you know what happens next. (one word, freaky.) I don’t know if that would scare you guys, but I just hate it when things (they don’t have to be living, embarrassingly) just stare at me! 😮

    • admin March 10, 2014, 2:05 PM

If you are getting them for the parts, I would prefer the Mixels. They are very creative little buggers and more will come. However if you are a Chima fan, or like to build animals, the Legend Beasts are a very good option.

    • BLProductions March 10, 2014, 3:25 PM

For parts, get either one. If you’re a Chima fan, get a legend beast or two. But the Mixels are way cooler in my opinion.

      • Bohrok Tru March 11, 2014, 2:00 AM

        plus mini joints mor MECHZ!!
Admin, has a post alreayd been written on Mech-building?

        • admin March 11, 2014, 9:45 AM

No, no mech-building post as of yet.

          • Håkan March 11, 2014, 8:14 PM

            Unless you count Fikko’s posts…

  • BLProductions March 10, 2014, 3:24 PM

When I first saw these, I thought they were very odd compared to the ones in the episodes. I still hold a general dislike for them, but I’m not a very big Chima fan. If I had to get one it would be the croc beast, I like the parts. 😐

Also, admin, I know its not very important, but in the last line of the paragraph above the Eagle beast pic, you said “‘toot’ pieces,” but you meant “tooth” right? Sorry, it just bothered me a little. I understood what you meant though, both types of those are on the Mixels. 😉

    • Lloydguy March 10, 2014, 4:20 PM

there is a new type i have only seen on the croc and lion beasts -the tooth that hangs.(pardon my caps)

      • BLProductions March 10, 2014, 4:41 PM

Yes, the ones on the Mixels are different, I see now. The ones you’re talking about come also on the Eagle legend beast (in yellow), and on a few of the summer sets (Emmet’s Mech, for example).

      • admin March 10, 2014, 5:02 PM

Yeah, that’s a nice piece. Also the Eagle has it for its beak. 😉

    • admin March 10, 2014, 4:58 PM

Thanks for catching that typo. I appreciate it. Sometimes things like that slip by the spell-checking and editing process, so it is good to have more sets of eyes to notice them. I fixed it. 🙂

      • BLProductions March 10, 2014, 6:03 PM

        Welcome, you are. 😉

        • admin March 10, 2014, 6:39 PM

Talking like Yoda someone is.

  • Alex March 10, 2014, 6:01 PM

On the whole, I would give these sets a 6/10. They do look nice with their printed components, and they have a good amount of articulation, which I find one of the most important aspects of MOCs. But I definitely agree with you and JANG that they don’t seem similar to their cartoon appearances, which makes no sense- they look more like over-decorated mechs or at least robotic creatures than organic animals. I think these would be great for the parts, though, and I’m especially excited for those beautifully printed 1×1 round eye parts. Again, awesome for MOCs, but thematically unsatisfactory.

    • Alex March 10, 2014, 6:02 PM

Also, will LEGO come out with more Legend Beasts, like the Ravens? 😕

      • admin March 10, 2014, 6:34 PM

Alex, I don’t know for sure, but I have watched a video with Mark Stafford where he stresses that all tribes have Legend Beasts. I got the impression from that video that it is a possibility that LEGO will release other Legend Beasts as well, but again, there is no evidence for this at this point.

    • admin March 10, 2014, 6:38 PM

Interesting that you mention that. From all of the LEGO Master Builder Academy sets the only kit that I didn’t like that much was the creature builder. It is just really hard to build realistic creatures from LEGO on a smaller scale. They tend to end up looking like mechs and robots – like you said. On a very large scale of course it is possible as yo can do all kinds of curves. Still, the building techniques and parts are very interesting. Also, the Legend Beasts are particularly enhanced by the stickers and printed parts – something the MBA kits don’t have.

  • Majestic Kai Fan March 11, 2014, 12:57 AM

I want to get the Lion, the Croc and the Wolf. As for the gorilla, uh it looks really bad. I might consider the Eagle.

  • Bohrok Tru March 11, 2014, 12:02 PM

I just realized that theres a GOLD LIGHTSABER-HILT in the eagle set, it’s on my “to-buy” list now!

    • Alex March 11, 2014, 1:00 PM

You might get 2 hilts- When I got Eglor’s Twin Bike and the Galaxy Squad Vermin Vaporizer, they each came with extras of small pieces (including the hilts), so now I have 4 of them! 😀

    • BLProductions March 11, 2014, 1:49 PM

You could also get Braptor’s Wing Striker, it comes with two gold hilts. You can see it here:
      http://brickset.com/sets/70128-1/Braptor-s-Wing-Striker
And any set with lightsaber hilts will come with an extra. 😉

  • ninja of stealth March 11, 2014, 12:15 PM

AM I THE ONLY ONE HERE WHO THINKS THE MIXELS ARE FREAKY?!?!?!?!?!? 😮

    • Alex March 11, 2014, 1:02 PM

How could those cute little guys be freaky? They’re ADORABLE!

      • admin March 11, 2014, 1:15 PM

Yeah, I like them very much as well. Cute monsters are always welcome in my room! 😈

    • Majestic Kai Fan March 16, 2014, 10:07 PM

Mixels give me shivers down my spine

    • Rattle Shake March 27, 2014, 10:59 PM

No. I think they are freaky.

  • Håkan March 11, 2014, 8:18 PM

For unknown reasons, the Mixels only seem to be available as rare, relatively expensive imports here in Sweden, so I might go for one of those instead… Possibly the wolf or the gorilla… =/

If they’re not available at the Lego store in Copenhagen, where I might be going again in the beginning of April…

  • gid617 March 12, 2014, 12:18 AM

I find it interesting how several small sets this year (Mixels and Legend Beasts) are using really little pieces and pretty detailed in general… especially since both the Mixels and Legend Beasts are (somewhat, in the case of the LBs) cartoonish – theoretically appealing to younger kids. My brother got the croc, I thought it looked fairly realistic (a bit un-organic looking of course, but that’s pretty much inevitable) – at least after he took off the bar for Cragger to sit behind.

I’m thinking about getting the lion, but not sure if I wouldn’t rather get a couple of Mixels…

  • Rattle Shake March 27, 2014, 10:54 PM

I got the crocodile legend beast and it is amazing! It has good playability and good for set ups. my favorite is the crocodile then the eagle.

    • admin March 28, 2014, 9:50 AM

Yes, both the crocodile and the eagle are great! I’m glad you like them too! 😛

  • Rattle Shake March 27, 2014, 10:58 PM

I might get some mixels to make the Rhino and raven legend beast. Im am angry that they did not make a Rhino beast or a raven. Because the Rhinos the Ravens and the Crocodiles are my favorite tribes

    • admin March 28, 2014, 9:51 AM

It is possible that they will make them in a future wave. Mark Stafford mentioned that all tribes have Legend Beasts and from how he said it it sounded like we may be getting more. 😉

  • Zaniel Condado May 9, 2014, 3:03 PM

The pictures that you have are very cool I also love Legends of Chima legend beasts especially the lion tribe legend beast!

  • ScottTheKangaroo April 3, 2015, 10:39 PM
