LEGO CUUSOO Doctor Who & The Big Bang

There are a couple of interesting LEGO projects that made it to 10,000 votes just recently that I thought we should discuss. One is the LEGO CUUSOO Doctor Who project, and the other is the LEGO CUUSOO Big Bang Theory. So let’s see what we got! ๐Ÿ˜‰

LEGO CUUSOO Doctor Who Project

The first recent LEGO CUUSOO creation that made it to 10,000 public votes is the LEGO Doctor Who project by GlenBricker and Kaminoan. This was actually a really interesting development, as LEGO originally rejected all Doctor Who related creations citing licensing conflicts. However at the end of February it was announced on the LEGO CUUSOO Project Guidelines page, that the licensing issue has been resolved and Doctor Who related LEGO creations are welcome again. GlenBricker and Kaminoan didn’t waste time and listed their LEGO Doctor Who project right after the announcement. It took them less then two weeks to achieve the required 10,000 votes for LEGO to consider their idea for production.

LEGO CUUSOO Doctor Who Minifigures

Here is what theyย shared about the LEGO Doctor Who project: “…Doctor Who fits in every theme LEGO has ever produced. It is like the grand unification theory. LEGO City, Castle, Space, Miners, Agents, Underwater, even Chima – if you go back to some of the older episodes… well, ok, so The Doctor would look a bit weird in LEGO Friends, but even then, he is visiting some strange Alien species… So what we are looking for in this LEGO set are the elements that are harder to come by, a few LEGO parts that have not been molded in the correct colors, and of course some figures. Just enough content to drop the TARDIS, the TARDIS console, the Doctor, and his companions into a build for a little flavor, and a few trouble-makers to stir the pot. We are suggesting 5 minifigures, K-9, and 3 Brick Built Daleks for characters. We are also suggesting the TARDIS external (police-box) and a TARDIS console.”

LEGO CUUSOO Doctor Who TARDIS

I know that Doctor Who is a significant part of British culture, and elsewhere it has become a cult television favorite, but the fact remains that most people outside of the UK have little idea what the show is about. So here is a bit of info about it from Wikipedia: “Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television program produced by the BBC. The program depicts the adventures of the Doctor, a Time Lord, and time-travelling humanoid alien. He explores the universe in his TARDIS, a sentient time-traveling spaceship. Its exterior appears as a blue British police-box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. Along with a succession of companions, the Doctor faces a variety of foes while working to save civilizations, help ordinary people, and right wrongs.” You can read more about the series on Wikipedia.

I’m very curious to see if this LEGO Doctor Who project is actually going to be made into a LEGO set. So far the official response from the LEGO team has been the following: “Congratulations GlenBricker and Kaminoan on reaching 10,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO! You’ve presented a very nice TARDIS exterior and interior playset, and an assortment of characters from which to choose. We’re looking forward to considering this project in the LEGO Review, but for now excuse us while we go make an electroshock device… just in case this really IS a Nestene plot to take over the world via a toy factory! We now officially advance this project to the Review phase.”

LEGO CUUSOO The Big Bang Theory

The other LEGO CUUSOO project that just reached 10,000 public votes is the LEGO Bing Bang Theory by Alatariel and GlenBricker (yep, GlanBricker is on a roll here!). This LEGO set proposal is based on the popular American sitcom The Big Bang Theory created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. The set represents the living-room of Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter, which is the core location of the series. It’s filled with geeky details accurate to the show including Sheldon’s board, Green Lantern lantern, Rubik’s cube tissue box, DNA model, mini LEGO Death Star and more. You can read more about the series on Wikipedia.

LEGO CUUSOO The Big Bang Theory Details

This project also made it to the LEGO CUUSOO Review phase where a LEGO Review Board composed of designers, product-managers, and other key team members will examine the ideas. They will build concept-models and determine if the concept meets their standards for what it takes to be a LEGO product. This includes factors such as playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand. Every potential LEGO product goes through a process like this and must meet the same standards. The next review begins in May and ends in September.

Once the review is complete, the LEGO CUUSOO team will inform the LEGO community of their decision on which project meets their approval and goes to the Development phase of the process. During this time LEGO model designers refine the product and develop it for release, create the product materials (box, instructions, marketing), and get everything ready for a production run. This also takes several months, but the end we will have the next LEGO CUUSOO project! In the meantime you can check out the currently available LEGO CUUSOO sets at the Online LEGO Shop.

So what do you think? How do you like these two LEGO CUUSOO projects that successfully made it to the Review phase? Which one would you like to see as an official LEGO set? And whichย do you think has the better chance? Feel free to share and discuss in the comment section below! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I will get every Lego Doctor Who set released…THIS IS AWESOME! I could yell myself hoarse like Benny! DOCTORRRR DOCTORRR DOCTORRR!!!!!! This is so cool!!! There are still a good amount of fans in the USA like me and my whole family who are allowed to watch it, excepting my Mom. But I mean really this is so great! The eleventh doctor could be better, he needs to be improved, as does Amy a bit. But I really hope they make some sets that are more then collectibles. Also o loved the Ten and Rose set with the bad wolf on the Tardis!! That console looks just like the one in series seven!!!! But the bad wolf sign should have been with the ninth doctor in the first series, not the tenth. And roses shirt doesn’t go with tens era, she wore it in the empty child and the doctor dances. They really need to make pandoras box with Rory as a roman, and amy inside. That would be awesome. People probably have no idea what I’m talking about if they haven’t watched the show :). Which is recommended, if you’re a teen. (Little bit of in appropiate talking amd references, lots of weird, lots of scary, and a little too awesome to handle yourself well at moments like these :D.) This sooo cool!

“Is,” so cool. They also need to make the Tardis’s closet and it would be like a modular building ;D. And they need to make the silence, with a function where you can make them disappear so it is like there not there then they are, or something like that. They should also make Gallifrey!! Or a barn set with 8.5 Doctor, computer concsience Rose, and the machine. (It could transform into a big white box with the red button :D.) This is great, finally I can talk about Lego Doctor Who awesomeness without being out of place :D.

Strider, please note that the set pictured here is NOT a final design. It is just a suggestion. It will be up to LEGO designers to make the final set. I’m sure they will do a good job both on the set itself and the minifigs. ๐Ÿ™‚

        • Strider March 21, 2014, 12:25 PM

Yes, I’m aware of that. I’m sort of hoping Lego kind of realizes that this isn’t really a bad idea. I mean, two weeks is amazing, but Lego knows best.

          • admin March 21, 2014, 1:14 PM

Yes, getting 10,000 votes in two weeks is amazing! ๐Ÿ˜€

    • admin March 21, 2014, 11:51 AM

Yeah, I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, but it sounds like fun! ๐Ÿ™„

      • Strider March 21, 2014, 12:27 PM

It is :D. (“Trust me….I’m the Doctor” :D.) Thst is a huge quote. They should also make a Weeping Angel set with a minifigure who has a, “The Angels Have the Phone Box,” T-Shirt. I also kind of hope Lego Sherlock could be a possibility…

  • Chi-bacca March 21, 2014, 11:36 AM

I like both of these but probably wouldn’t get them if they were made as sets.
Any news on the exo-suit yet? I wanna see what LEGO is going to do with it.

    • admin March 21, 2014, 11:53 AM

No update on the Exo-Suit besides that they are still working on it. I’m waiting for that one too! ๐Ÿ˜€

      • Bohrok Tru March 22, 2014, 1:57 AM

anything “exo” or “mech” I want very badly!!

I had forgotten about the mech though, thanx for the reminder!

        • admin March 22, 2014, 9:59 AM

Yeah, I’m like that too! Exo or mech in the name and I will buy it. ๐Ÿ˜›

  • legostuff71 March 21, 2014, 11:48 AM

YES, on the BIG BANG THEORY. Consider the fact that the BIG BANG THEORY has not only talked about LEGO ( here and there in some of the episodes) but, has some of the LEGO sets displayed in the back round on the show.

  • Yoda Archives March 21, 2014, 11:55 AM

I would get the Doctor Who set. It has a better chance of being made than the Big Bang set. Bigger audience, larger fan base and more play possibilities. “All of time and space; everywhere and anywhere; every star that ever was. Where do you want to start?” Thus you can play with any other LEGO set.

    • Strider March 21, 2014, 12:22 PM

Yeah, definetly! Every brick that ever was…

  • shrunkin March 21, 2014, 2:13 PM

    WE ARE THE DALEKS!!!
    EXTERMINATE!!!

    • Strider March 21, 2014, 4:24 PM

THE TARDIS IS A WEAPON!!! IT SHALL BE DESTROYED!!!

      EXTERNINATE!!!

      • admin March 21, 2014, 4:37 PM

I have no idea what you guys are talking about, but carry on.

        • Strider March 22, 2014, 11:01 AM

There was this planet with a race and then it
got blown up and this guy called Davros who lost his legs amd some parts of his arm rebuilt his own race, intelligent but like robots, and they are called the Daleks. They are extremely dangerous and they yell exterminate in a high rasping voice. (Nicholas Briggs, the voice of the daleks has been doing it since 1963. But the Daleks aren’t in every episode.)

  • Bohrok Tru March 21, 2014, 2:39 PM

I’m not a huge fan of The bigbang theory, but I would buy the set just for the collection of stuff on the top shelf! especially the actual green lantern!

    • admin March 21, 2014, 4:37 PM

LOL! Yeah I know what you mean! ๐Ÿ˜›

  • SuperSpyX March 21, 2014, 4:28 PM

US Doctor Who fan here, I would so love to have this made! Best sci-fi series ever (sorry SW, you take second). For those interested, my favorite doctor is the tenth and favorite companion is a toss-up between Rose and Amy.

    • Strider March 22, 2014, 11:05 AM

I like Ten a lot too, but I started with eleven and I have to say that I like him a bit better. I don’t know if it’s all the fangirls going after Ten or what :{. My favorite companion is Clara and Rory both the same :). Jack was…Jack, if you’ve watched the show you’ll sort of know what I mean. Mickey was okay, he got better later on. And yeah, Doctor Who beats starwars.

  • shrunkin March 21, 2014, 4:40 PM

    time whimmy stuff

    • Strider March 22, 2014, 11:07 AM

      “Timey Wimey???”
“I have no idea where he picks that stuff up.” ;D. That part from the 50th was sooo funny!!

  • BLProductions March 21, 2014, 5:00 PM

I think the Doctor Who set would be a better choice for LEGO than TBBT. I am personally not too interested in either, but if the DW set comes with cool pieces, I might get it. ๐Ÿ˜•

Also, off topic, I found this, it’s about the 2014 Yoda Chronicles series.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDPcB7DcJQQ
Looks like most of the summer wave is in it. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Ray March 21, 2014, 5:45 PM

Doctor Who already has a wide range of building black sets and figures from “Character Building”, so it’s understandable that Lego would have a licensing conflict here. Although the Marvel stuff has gone back and forth between Lego and MegaBloks before, so who knows.

The BBT set seems more like a minifigure series with a diorama added just to justify itself. Some of the smaller Lego Friends sets are also just dioramas, so this is not without precedent, but if you think about the Ghostbusters and BTTF Cuusoo sets, they both have, well, CARS.

    • admin March 21, 2014, 5:52 PM

Ray, it seems like LEGO was able to resolve the licensing conflict, so looks like they could go ahead with the project if they want to. The fact that this project got 10,000 votes in just two weeks seems to be a very strong indication that there is a potential market there.

I agree with what you said about the BBT set, and it is true that most LEGO sets have some kind of swooshable vehicle or something. Although I would say that the Minecraft sets are basically just part-packs and they are doing quite well.

My guess is that LEGO will go ahead with Doctor Who. BBT, I’m not so sure… also, they tend to choose only one product per review period, and I think Doctor Who is a stronger project with bigger following. But we shall see. ๐Ÿ™„

  • Leander March 21, 2014, 8:42 PM

Awesome, a new cuusoo set !

  • ninja of stealth March 26, 2014, 12:30 PM

I would get that big bang theory set because of all the cool LEGO things like the globe and the Chinese take out boxes! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • Aaron November 11, 2014, 12:50 PM

I think that the Doctor Who sets would be so cool. Sure the Big Bang Theory has a lot of interesting pieces, but how many kids watch the show? Doctor Who has a lot more playability. You could have Doctor Who mix with LOTR or The Hobbit!
