LEGO Star Wars new & upcoming sets!

There are a couple of LEGO Star Wars sets that have been recently revealed that I think are worth talking about; the #75084 LEGO Star Wars Wookiee Gunship that was showcased at last week’s San Diego Comic-Con, and the #75058 LEGO Star Wars MTT that was first revealed at the end of May, but we haven’t talked about yet. 🙂

#75084 LEGO Star Wars

We will start with the #75084 LEGO Star Wars Wookiee Gunship, simply because it is more exciting. Although the Wookiees themselves are pretty plain, the gunship has a very sweet color-scheme and some interesting new elements. Here is the official description: Protect Wullffwarro and his Jedi friend, Kanan Jarrus, with the powerful LEGO Star Wars Wookiee Gunship. As featured in the Star Wars: Rebels animated TV series, this amazing battle-ready craft has loads of weapons to see off any invading force, like movable front cannons and an elevating top cannon. When the action really heats up, raise the wings into attack mode and unleash the never-before-seen rapid shooters! If you run low on ammo, open the side hatches to access the spare supply, then lower the rear bay door and unload the mobile gun post. Includes 4 minifigures with assorted weapons: Wullffwarro, Kanan Jarrus and 2 Wookiees. 570 pieces. Price: $69.99. Will be available from January 2015.

#75058 LEGO Star Wars

The other set that hasn’t been officially released yet, although it has been available at some markets, is the #75058 LEGO Star Wars MTT. This set has been received by the LEGO fan community with a lot less enthusiasm, in fact that’s why I haven’t talked about it yet. Here is the official description: Transport the droids into battle in the heavily-armored MTT! Open up this Multi-Troop Transport repulsorlift vehicle with hidden wheels to reveal a huge array of play functions. Pull down the side flaps and fire the spring-loaded shooters, flip the back hatch containing a STAP, and aim the front cannons. Turn the gear to extend the Battle Droid rack at the front of the tank or switch around the 4 racks between different compartments of the MTT. Let your imagination run wild and create your own version of the famous Battle of Naboo from Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. Includes 3 minifigures with assorted weapons: Naboo Security Guard, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, plus a Battle Droid Pilot and 2 Battle Droids. 954 pieces. I couldn’t find an official price, but according to the video-review below by the BrickShow, it is around $90.

So what do you think? How do you like these upcoming LEGO Star Wars sets? Are you putting either or both of them on your LEGO Shopping list? I actually saw the MTT at a LEGO store.
I think it looks fine, although it could stand to be bigger.

  • BLProductions July 25, 2014, 10:54 AM

The Wookiee Gunship has indeed at least two new parts for 2015, but I’m not that interested in it. 😐 The MTT has more interest b/c I’m a newer SW fan (I actually got into the theme in mid-2012), and thus missed all the old stuff. 🙁 Still, it is $90 (it’s also on Lego Shop), and for that price I’d rather get the MechDragon or Arctic Base Camp. 😕

  • Jesse July 25, 2014, 11:12 AM

I am going to be so broke this season.

    • Ninja of stealth July 28, 2014, 5:56 PM

Same here Jesse. These are pretty awesome sets! Which reminds me, it was just my birthday a couple of days ago and now I have just enough money to buy either the R2-D2 set or the Ewok village set. So now I’m wandering, okay which one should I get? I want them both the same but here’s the deal, there’s a few other ones I’m saving up for: the battle for ninjago city, ultra agents mission HQ, and the X-1 Ninja charger, all pretty expensive to me. And if I buy the R2-D2 set I don’t think I’ll ever have enough (patince to save up 🙄 ) money to buy the Ewok village. But I will have lots of money left over to buy those other sets I want that wont be around forever like the R2 and the Ewok Village. But if I bought the Ewok village then ill have to save up for those sets that will take a little while. What should I do? (Hardest disision of my life! 🙄 )

      • admin July 28, 2014, 8:06 PM

Yes, those are hard decisions. I would mention though that the R2-D2 set is basically a sculpture. Once you build it there is not much to do with it besides putting it on a shelf. The other sets you mentioned are play-sets with a lot of versatility and play-value. I would choose a play-set over a sculpture any day.

Okay then, I’M GETTING THE EWOK VILLAGE!!! Thank you Admin!

          • admin July 28, 2014, 9:22 PM

I think you will really enjoy it. It is a very nice set! 🙂

          • BLProductions July 28, 2014, 10:11 PM

Yes, you will enjoy it! But also the two Ninjago sets I think are very nice sets, and you should get those (especially as a Ninjago fan!). 😉

  • Jake July 28, 2014, 11:05 AM

    Why is this reposted?

    • admin July 28, 2014, 11:15 AM

Jake, it was actually scheduled for today, but due to a glitch it showed up a few days ago. I quickly took it down and rescheduled it for the proper date, so yeah, just a bit of daja vu for some of you who caught it the first time. 😉

  • legostuff71 July 28, 2014, 11:50 AM

Wookie gunship yes. MTT NO. I have over half the of the Star Wars summer sets. ( MOS EISLEY CANTINA, JEDI SCOUT FIGHTER, THE GHOST , THE PHANTOM and one I am not suppose to know about It’s a birthday gift ( but I do know ) is the STAR DESTORYER.)

  • Superweapon July 28, 2014, 12:04 PM

Is it just me or are these MTTs slowly getting less and less droid capacity?

    • admin July 28, 2014, 1:36 PM

Yeah, that has been one of the complaints about that set. 😕

      • BLProductions July 28, 2014, 2:37 PM

Well, this new one can hold six in front, plus the pilot in the top, and something else in the back. But I do see the point, real MTTs hold about 20 battle droids.

  • Superweapon July 28, 2014, 3:05 PM

I have the original and while it also only holds 6 droids I would have liked the new one to at least be able to hold the same amount as the (i wanna say) 2009 one.

    • admin July 28, 2014, 3:07 PM

Especially for the increased price, that makes sense.

    • BLProductions July 28, 2014, 5:42 PM

It’s from 2007, but yeah, it would be nice if the new one held as many. 😐
I have no Battle Droids myself, and would like to get a set that came with at least 8. BTW, this set comes with 8 droids, but 1’s a pilot, and one is for a STAP. 😉

  • BLProductions July 28, 2014, 6:22 PM

Completely off topic, not even Lego, but I found the trailer to the last part of Peter Jackson’s Terrible Trilogy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSzeFFsKEt4 😮

    • admin July 28, 2014, 8:07 PM

Saw that the other day. I know I will go and see it and I also know that I will be disappointed. Sad, really, but I’m grateful for the LOTR. That is a masterpiece.

      • Strider July 28, 2014, 9:13 PM

Wait just one second…Peter Jackson’s Terrible Trilogy. Your sentiments are respected but…the way I see it is that the trilogy only adds to the lore and background of a fantastic world that so many people only experience through the movies. Tolkien’s books themselves are very dense and long, and while the Hobbit Trilogy is sometimes hailed as being stretched out, it just seems like it makes it complete. And at least we get more Middle Earth Lego sets. And just so I’m not completely off topic, I like the star wars sets as well, the MTT seems like a completely unnecessary redo however, but I do like the design.

        • admin July 28, 2014, 9:30 PM

I think the issue with The Hobbit is that it doesn’t have the same debth, darkness and hope as the LOTR. In one sense this is not Peter Jackson’s fault. The difference is there in the books as well. All I can say is that while I was deeply and emotionally involved with LOTR and it’s characters, I did not feel anything like that during watching The Hobbit. Yes, it is visually appealing and all, but it did not touch my soul like the LOTR trilogy did. LOTR fully filled up 3 movies.

The Hobbit deserved 1 and it would have been fine. There is probably a good reason Tolkien kept that book short. It would have been wise from Peter Jackson to just stick with that. I was bored out of my mind during the last movie where the Smaug scene was going on and on and on. Same with the barrel escape. It was interesting and fun for a few minutes, but it ended up being so stretched out it lost its appeal. And the entire Hobbit film series has been like that; streched out to such an extent that it is painful to watch.

          • Strider July 28, 2014, 11:06 PM

I suppose it depends on your point of view, I can understand your opinion. I don’t think it has the same depth as Lord of the Rings either though.

          • Håkan July 29, 2014, 5:48 AM

Agreed. I’ve just watched the first movie, but it felt narratively sub-par. Every time the gang gets into trouble, Gandalf comes back from nowhere and saves the day with a trick up his sleeve. Look up “Deus Ex Machina” on Wikipedia… =/ One single film as a more faithful adaptation would have sufficed.

          • BLProductions July 29, 2014, 1:35 PM

Agreed, admin. I sometimes wish I lived in Middle Earth, it seems more exciting. But LotR’s quite touching, though I think the movies could have been better if PJ had added 20mins to the first film and stuck in Tom Bombadil; cut Saruman’s death and Warg Attack from the Two Towers, and moved Shelob’s lair into that; and added the events of Hobbiton to the RotK.
I can’t say I was bored when I watched the Smaug scene, I was more disgusted by the incorrectness of it. 😕 PJ has one last chance to redeem himself, though. 😉

            • Håkan July 29, 2014, 6:57 PM

Considering Tom Bombadill is occasionally thought of as a stand-in for Tolkien himself, it would have been funny if Jackson himself played Bombadill. (Although his former corpulence would have made him a better fit for the part.)

        • BLProductions July 29, 2014, 1:25 PM

I can’t agree that it adds to the lore, b/c what happens in the movies isn’t strictly true. And I don’t see what background you’re talking about. 😕
The Hobbit book is actually shorter than any of the LotR books, so I don’t see why there has to be three movies. I think that Peter Jackson did that purposely to line up with the Lord of the Rings. The Desolation of Smaug was almost more add-on’s than storyline. For example, the dwarves don’t fight Smaug (they wouldn’t dare!), orcs aren’t constantly tracking them, Legolas is not there, Kili isn’t hurt, and Bard isn’t arrested by Lake-town guards. And the Orc thing runs through all the movies, but Sauron isn’t commanding them. That’s most of the problems. The whole thing could be two movies if you deleted that stuff. But that’s just my view. 😐

  • Carbo July 29, 2014, 9:32 AM

I really like the Wookie Gunship. The wookies are really cool!

I actually really like The Hobbit more than LOTR, as I feel that The Hobbit has a stronger main character. Frodo was pretty weak, and wouldn’t have been able to accomplish anything if not for Sam. But Bilbo saves the dwarves several times and he also kills more enemies in one movie than Frodo does in all three. But maybe it’s because dwarves are my favorite mythical creatures.

I also really like the barrel scene, even though it was rather long. But I thought that made it really awesome. Especially the scene with Bombur!

I’m sorry if that offended anybody, but that is just my honest opinion. And if I am wrong, go ahead and correct me, as I have not watched LOTR in a long time.

    • admin July 29, 2014, 10:07 AM

Carbo, we are just sharing opinions here. It is not about being rigth or wrong. We all have different favorite parts of the movies, and that is perfectly fine. Your opinion is just as valuable as anyone else’s. 😉

    • BLProductions July 29, 2014, 1:13 PM

Yes, Frodo was such a weakling! In the book, he is able to take care of himself, and think too. Also, though not specifically mentioned, Frodo did kill a billion orcs by destroying the Ring! 😉
The barrel scene in the Hobbit with Bombur is the funniest part in that whole movie, I think. 😀

  • legostuff71 July 29, 2014, 12:22 PM

Keep in mind, there is a difference between the books and the movies. THE HOBBIT the book is slow going and so for a visual aspect Peter Jackson probably wanted to make it more interesting . ( Oh, my dad is a college English teacher and he does the same type of work that Tolkien did. In fact, before Tolkien died my dad wrote letters to him and that’s they communicated with one another .)

    • admin July 29, 2014, 12:58 PM

That’s amazing about your dad! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  • Harry July 31, 2014, 9:36 PM

I really like the Wookie Gunship and will certainly be looking to get that. Also MTT is pretty cool too. However, another Obi and Qui Gon seems a bit boring and there seems to be very little room for droids inside.
Thanks for sharing this info guys!

  • mike August 30, 2014, 8:08 PM

I don’t own the 2007 MTT so it’s cool to have this. But the 2007 is just more real/cooler/appealing than this one. I think if a design is cool Lego should not be ashamed to re-release a set. I think this would be a good example of such a set. In general the newer versions are Always better but they missed the mark a bit here.

still gonna buy it though 😀
