LEGO The Hobbit – revelation of Smaug

It has been very quiet in regards to LEGO Lord of the Rings and LEGO The Hobbit, but we do know that there will be at least four new sets later this year. To start building up anticipation for the new wave, LEGO released an image on their Facebook page with a glimpse at Smaug, who will be included in one of the upcoming sets. So let’s talk about this some. 🙂

LEGO The Hobbit Video-Game

The LEGO The Hobbit video-game does have an image of Smaug on the cover, however this is artwork, not the actual LEGO Smaug figure (see picture above, and the video-game on Amazon). The newly revealed picture (see below) appears to be of the actual LEGO Smaug in all of its plasticy goodness. Okay, we can’t see much; just the feet, a bit of one wing, and the tail. Based on both pictures Smaug appears quite similar to various LEGO Castle dragons released in the past – nicely done, I would say – I always liked LEGO’s dragons. And if you are wondering about the code on the picture, it is for the  to unlock the LEGO The Hobbit video-game character Narzug.

LEGO The Hobbit Smaug

As far as the upcoming LEGO The Hobbit sets, there are four we know about. No actual set names yet, but we do have some of the other details via the Brickset database:

  • #79015 LEGO The Hobbit – The smallest of the upcoming sets. Should include Galadriel and the Witch King. 101 pieces – price: $14.99
  • #79016 LEGO The Hobbit – This supposed to be an extension of the previously released #79013 LEGO The Hobbit Lake Town Chase set. 313 pieces – price: $29.99
  • #79017 LEGO The Hobbit – Features the battle of the Five Armies, not much else is known at this point. 471 pieces – price: $59.99
  • #79018 LEGO The Hobbit – This is the largest set in the upcoming wave and is the one that suppose to include Smaug. ??? pieces – price: $129.99

The new wave of LEGO The Hobbit sets are scheduled for release at the end of this year. In the meantime you can browse the current selection at the Online LEGO Shop. What will be the future of LEGO Lord of the Rings and LEGO The Hobbit is up to anyone’s guess after the last episode of The Hobbit film. I’m hoping that LEGO will go back to Lord of the Rings and give us at least another big set like the #10237 LEGO Tower of Orthanc – hopefully this time something on the side of the good guys.

Lets just hope it’s not a recolored Castle dragon…

    • admin July 17, 2014, 11:13 AM

I’m pretty sure the dragon is more than just recolored. The shape of his head is different.

      • Smaug February 16, 2015, 8:19 AM

It’s not it has NO similar molds of the castle dragons, except the legs. And the wings are movable and fold up

        • admin February 16, 2015, 11:12 AM

Smaug, please note you are commenting on an old discussion before the set came out. It’s a good idea to check the date both on the post itself and on the comments. 😉

  • Jake July 17, 2014, 11:45 AM

    Did I mention I’m excited?

  • The Watcher July 17, 2014, 11:51 AM

I haven’t gotten the LEGO Hobbit game because I felt it was rushed. I don’t understand why LEGO didn’t just wait for the release of all three movies.

  • legostuff71 July 17, 2014, 12:04 PM

Keep calm and carry the LEGO Hobbit sets on. ( Oh, Jake stay cool, we wouldn’t want you to have a LEGO melt down. Hey, I didn’t know I could climb on the walls with excitement.)

  • Awesome! I’m so excited there is finally news regarding the next wave of Hobbit sets. I thought Smaug would come in the Laketown expansion set but he’ll be $140….Galadriel And Witch-king figs will be sweet. I hope it is the Witch-king in his helmet and robes and not the ghost version. Looking forward to this wave!

They better make a Barud-Dur set before ending LOTR. The theme had so much potential.

  • Ryan July 17, 2014, 6:05 PM

Very excited for this, but I think that dragon in the picture is suspiciously similar to the dragon in 70403. Only difference I see is the tail color.

Did anyone remember that the new Ninjago episodes are playing tonight? I completely forgot until I saw them on my TV guide.

  • LloydTheRulerOfNinjago July 17, 2014, 10:15 PM

Let’s hope the Witch King will come in all of his armor and his helmet and not a minifig like the flashback Shredder from TMNT. I hope it’s not a “before” minifigure. Plus, people it’s “Before” not B4…we aren’t playing bingo 😛 And let’s hope Galadriel comes with that sword of his that is really popular. Also, has anyone heard of Azog being in any of the new 2014-2015 winter sets? I really want his minifigure with Smaug and a couple of orcs. I hope they come in the same set:)

    • Crazybricks July 19, 2014, 5:55 PM

Galadriel is a girl and as far as I know she doesn’t have a sword

  • Tomsche July 18, 2014, 3:49 AM

Speculation: and this is purely my gut speaking, but I believe the add-on might be the tower with the arrow shooter that Bard uses to try and drive away the dragon

    • Superweapon July 18, 2014, 6:57 AM

I recall reading that that’s what it is.

    • admin July 18, 2014, 10:44 AM

      That would make sense.

    • Maethorneth July 19, 2014, 8:53 AM

NOOOOOO!!!!!!! That makes me so mad! Why does he have to use the giant crossbow?!?!? NO NO NO! He uses a regular sized BLACK arrow from his regular sized bow. NOT A CATAPULT! UGH!

      • JayVendetta July 23, 2014, 11:12 AM

        IKR!!!

        • JayVendetta July 23, 2014, 11:12 AM

          Lol!

          • ShadowPixl July 24, 2014, 9:51 AM

Lol stand back everyone OCD is kicking in! But seriously, why the giant crossbow? He shoots it down wih a bow!

  • LK901 July 18, 2014, 7:57 AM

Nice, (Also more information on the Brickipedia page = http://en.brickimedia.org/wiki/The Hobbit )

  • BLProductions July 20, 2014, 1:13 PM

No. It can’t be. NOOOO!!!! Why is the Witch King in a Hobbit set?! And Galadriel! Come on, Peter Jackson! I hope that is not the real set. 😡
Although the rest of the sets sound reasonable, and not like the 2013 battle packs. 🙂

    • admin July 20, 2014, 1:28 PM

Maybe they put them there because people have been requesting them and LEGO is not planning to make any more LOTR sets? Just a thought…

      • Smaug February 16, 2015, 8:21 AM

The reason is they are in battle of the five armies, and Galadrials crystal sees his ghost form

  • LloydTheRulerOfNinjago July 26, 2014, 12:00 PM

You can actually get a good look at the Smaug Dragon itself by watching the video put up by BrotherHoodWorkShop! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-cB4SUaEh4&list=UU6t9Bf2o-l8AEv9mv91p22g The Smaug dragon is awesome and I might just get the Lonely Mountain set just because of the dragon!

    • admin July 26, 2014, 8:54 PM

Yes, I was going to mention that as well, but since Kevin was going to let me know when the actual video will get uploaded to YouTube I decided to wait and post both that one and the tutorial together. But yes, it is a great video to see Smaug in action! 😈

  • Smaug February 16, 2015, 8:16 AM

This Smaug is the exact same as the one in the Lonly mountain set
