Build a mini LEGO Benny’s Spaceship!

If you are a fan of LEGO Classic Space and the #70816 LEGO Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! set, here is a fun project for you; a mini version of Benny’s Spaceship by Chris McVeigh. You might remember that we discussed another little LEGO Classic Spaceship that appeared on The LEGO Movie poster and was reverse-engineered by Peter Morris and also provided full building instructions, see here: Build a Small LEGO Classic Spaceship. And now let’s talk about the mini version of Benny’s Spaceship! 🙂

Mini LEGO Benny's Spaceship by Chris McWeigh

In the style of Anna’s song from the animated-film Frozen, Chris McVeigh even wrote a little poem for Benny: “Do you want to build a Spaceship? We could fly it ’round the halls! I think a ship in blue… is overdue, I’ve started building engine pods!” Cute, isn’t it? The little spaceship itself is built with the standard LEGO Classic Space color-scheme and includes a surprising amount of accurate detail for such a small scale; it even got the little wing-flyers, and the flaps over those large yellow space-cannons. This would actually make a wonderful addition to the full-size Benny’s Spaceship; you could build a whole fleet of them as companion one-person cruisers – just an idea!

Speaking about building the small version of Benny’s Spaceship, Chris provides step-by-step instructions you can download in PDF format from his website for free. (As you may remember, we have featured Chris here before; he is well known for his sweet LEGO Christmas ornaments and other small models – you can check out building instructions for those as well.)

The mini version of Benny’s Spaceship can be a fun weekend project to expand your LEGO Classic Space collection. And if you don’t have it already, you can find Benny’s Spaceship at the Online LEGO Shop.

So what do you think? Are you planning to build this small version of Benny’s Spaceship? Are you a LEGO Classic Space fan? Or did The LEGO Movie start or revive your interest in LEGO Classic Space? Would you like to have the theme come back with more sets than just Benny’s Spaceship and the LEGO Exo Suit set? Feel free to share in the comment section below! 😉

Can you build it with just parts from the actual set?

    • admin August 20, 2014, 1:37 PM

Yes, but would you take apart your full size spaceship just to build the little one? 😉

      • legogeek August 20, 2014, 9:48 PM

Yes, it is the same spaceship just..smaller.

I’m not big in to space but this is actually pretty cute!

      Thumbs up for cutenesss! 😛

=D Oh. I since I posted I just made my first BrickForge order. I got 3 scooters, and some broken bottles, cocktail glasses, and full bottles that were on sale. I’m excited to get them and there were plenty more items I’d like to get my hands on later.

        • admin August 20, 2014, 4:24 PM

I’m happy to hear that. I’m pretty sure you will really like them. I’m jelaous of your three scooters! I only got two! They work great in LEGO City setups, and I like them better than LEGO’s own scooter as they are a bit smaller and cuter, plus they have printing – although LEGO’s scooter is nice too.

FUN FACT: The BrickForge scooters were actually designed and first made by another customizer who goes by the name Arealight. He now fully focuses on Star Wars customs, but his scooters were very popular, so now BrickLink makes them. The originals by Arealight were moulded from resin in hand-made moulds. Arealight is an incredible artist with great patience.

Oh that is pretty cool. Yeah I got the light blue scooter with the rainbow, the Indigo? scooter with the hippie design (for the hippie minifigure XD) and the blue one with flames. That’s really cool about Arealight. I wish I had skills like that!

Nice! I also got the light-blue one with the rainbow, and the pink one with the flowers. I would like to get the other ones too. 😀

Hmm, that decorated slope piece is only found in Benny’s main Spaceship (!). Apart from that, it looks like the ship could be Bricklinked fairly cheaply…

Might change the design of it somewhat, since I’m still a fan of chibi-style spaceships.

    • admin August 20, 2014, 4:27 PM

That’s true about that slope, although another, slightly smaller version (2×3 instead of 2×4) was also available in LEGO Classic Space sets. In case you have one you could use that too. 😉

Don’t think I have that brick, alas, and it’s steeply prized on Bricklink. Well, in lingo fitting for a spaceship, I’ll go and wing it.

        • admin August 21, 2014, 9:39 AM

I’m pretty sure Benny would approve that method. 😉

  • Narrator_Bob August 21, 2014, 10:40 AM

that is so cool. i have a lot of my dad’s cousins’ old classic space stuff lying around in my Lego bins, so i’m going to try and build that!

  • Håkan December 27, 2018, 6:56 PM

Hmmm, now the “Space Slope” is found in two cheaper sets released in connection to the TLM2 movie. “70821-1: Emmet and Benny’s ‘Build and Fix’ Workshop!” and “70841-1: Benny’s Space Squad”, so we’ll havee more possibilities to get the part cheaper, or without dismantling the original spaceship.
