LEGO BIONICLE – exciting updates!

There has been so much new information on LEGO BIONICLE since our last update (see: LEGO Bionicle Confirmed & Teaser Video!) that I felt it was time to write another round-up article about all the exciting details. 🙂

LEGO Bionicle Website

First of all, the official LEGO BIONICLE website is now live (follow the link to get there) with high resolution images and bios on all of the main characters. There are also pictures of their masks and weapons. And there is a link to the official LEGO BIONICLE message-board if you want to chat with other BIONICLE fans. Below is the bio of all the six main characters.

LEGO Bionicle 2015

LEGO BIONICLE – GALI (Master of Water): Gali is friendly and peaceful. But when the situation calls for it, she can be as fierce as a raging ocean. She finds injustice intolerable and always goes out of her way to help the ones who need it. Gali’s mellow ways have made her the most liked among the heroes. She is generous, a good listener and friend. Only one little thing: she just can’t seem to tell a joke right! Powers: Water control and the ability to out-swim any known creature.

LEGO Bionicle Gali

LEGO BIONICLE – KOPAKA (Master of Ice): Kopaka is noble and reserved. Upholding his own strict moral code he strives to be perfect and always “do the right thing”. A fact that often makes him appear formal and even cold in the eyes of others. Luckily Kopaka’s clumsiness and his not too solid direction sense help the other heroes remember that, after all, Kopaka is just a Toa like them. Power: Freezing touch and resistance to cold.

LEGO BIONICLE – LEWA (Master of Jungle): Lewa is a true daredevil, a cunning rogue whose foolhardy manners have often gotten him into trouble. His rebel approach is a double-edged sword that the other heroes both love and hate. On one hand, Lewa finds new ways, on the other these ways sometimes lead to new trouble! Powers: Communes with plants and the wind.

LEGO Bionicle Lewa

LEGO BIONICLE – ONUA (Master of Earth): Onua is grounded and wise. He likes to spend his time alone meditating under the stars. Like an underground cave, receptive and silent. And… Snoring! Though Onua rarely says a word, the other heroes have come to respect this sleepy giant. They know that when he speaks, his crude voice caries guidance and wisdom. Powers: Night vision and the ability to create earthquakes.

LEGO Bionicle Onua

LEGO BIONICLE – POHATU (Master of Stone): Pohatu is unyielding and fearless. Renowned for his unbreakable stamina, he is arguably the toughest of all the heroes. With firm resolution and mysterious stubbornness Pohatu strides forward as a fearless vanguard leading the way of the heroes. Well almost fearless. Pohatu does NOT like the dark. Powers: Breaks and hurls rocks with unspeakable strength.

LEGO Bionicle Pohatu

LEGO BIONICLE – TAHU (Master of Fire): Tahu is hot-tempered and brave. He likes to excel and thinks of himself as the most heroic of the heroes. His forgetful nature has gotten him into trouble at time, but Tahu seems to be born under a very lucky star, and somehow always come out on top. Powers: Fire control and resistance to heat.

There is also an interesting video that introduces us to the story, and where it all began. I’m sure this will open up a lot of discussion amongst LEGO BIONICLE fans. At this point there are no plans for a TV show related to BIONICLE, instead the saga will be revealed though videos on the official LEGO BIONICLE website, so you might want to keep checking for updates.

Below is the official press-release for the return of LEGO BIONICLE from the recent New York City Comic Con. Attendees of the event also received an exclusive LEGO BIONICLE mask in clear color (pictures below). There is also a very interesting and detailed recap of the Comic Con BIONICLE reveal at FBTB.net (direct link to article).

Well, it looks exciting, especially for older fans I guess, but I’m gonna say “I knew it.” The prices are exactly what I thought: overpriced, based on size, not piece count. Although for me I think I’ll invest a little to give Metus a friend (or enemy, depending what he thinks of them). BTW, what group of Bionicles is Metus? I’m guessing he’s not a Toa. 😕
Also, I see that LEGO is giving their rapid-shooters a big push in those Protector sets. I’ve figured out how they work, too: you turn a gear connected to the axle that runs through the shooter, and a little bump (that gets turned by the axle) pushes/fires the 1×1 round plates out of the shooter. And that’s the rapid part: the faster the gear turns, the faster they fire. 😉

    • admin October 14, 2014, 10:56 AM

I’m gonna have to get myself a rapid shooter! That sounds so much fun! 🙄

      • Fikko3107 October 14, 2014, 1:16 PM

You know, I just remembered an interesting thing to note; most Bionicle waves often have this gimmick common to all of them; this only became really pronounced since around the 2004-2006 years. I think this could be a pretty good article…

        • admin October 14, 2014, 1:20 PM

Yes, that’s a very interesting topic. I will leave it for you though as I’m such a noob when it comes to Bionicle. I was in my dark ages by then. 😕

          • BLProductions October 14, 2014, 3:49 PM

I’m even more of a noob, since I barely knew about LEGO, and knew nothing of Bionicle (besides that it looked un-lego) when the theme was in production. 😕
Also, I just got my LEGO Shop holiday magazine, and it says that all four Hobbit sets will be available October 15 (aka tomorrow). 🙂

            • admin October 14, 2014, 5:32 PM

Yeah, I have been waiting for that day when they get officially released! I will probably write a post about them so our readers are aware. Maybe not tomorrow, as I have something else planned, but perhaps the following day. 🙂

            • Legozebra October 15, 2014, 10:04 AM

“Metus” is not a species, he is a character from the 2009 story arc who was known to be a traitor to the Agori and Glatorian heroes… This was all outside the “main” Matoran universe.

    • Fikko3107 October 14, 2014, 12:23 PM

Metus is an Agori; during the 2009 wave, after some revelations and stuff, the story shifted to another planet, Bara Magna, where the dethroned Great Spirit Mata Nui was casted away to. Bara Magna were inhabited by Matoran-like people known as the Agori, who settle disputes between villages by pitting their warriors, their “Glatorians” in arena battles. The dynamic might seem like Matoran-and-Toa-like at first, but it is vastly different.

      • BLProductions October 14, 2014, 12:47 PM

Ok, thanks! So would the Agori be considered as “good guys,” or are they just a neutral group of characters in the story?

        • Fikko3107 October 14, 2014, 1:12 PM

Most are neutral, sort of, most of them are just trying to make a living. Out of the six in set form (I’m not counting those in the vehicle sets), two of them, Atakus and Zesk, are aligned to malevolent parties-though technically speaking, these two are a different species, though similar, to the Agori. Well, Zesk at least. Atakus I forgot. One of the remaining four is also secretly selling out the tribes to the villainous Skrall; is it Raanu, the Vulcanus Village Chief who just wants what’s best for the people? Is it Berix, the cowardly thief from Tajun? is it Metus, the Glatorian manager from Iconox? or is it Tarduk, treasure hunter from Tesara? I’ll let you check that yourself if you’re interested…

          • BLProductions October 14, 2014, 4:23 PM

            Challenge accepted.
Let’s see… Metus is certainly weird, he absolutely detests doghouses, he doesn’t like Frank Rock… I’m getting carried away. I know nothing about the others. 😕 Oh wait, trick question. 🙂 It’s Metus, 99% sure. I read his mind. Am I right?

            • Fikko3107 October 14, 2014, 9:01 PM

That’s right! In punishment, Mata Nui uses his Mask of Life’s powers to transform him into a talking snake. These events were chronicled in the fourth Bionicle movie, Bionicle: The Legend Reborn. The plot is weaker than the other movies, in my opinion, but the animation, besides the moving pins, at least, is top notch.

              • BLProductions October 15, 2014, 3:16 PM

I think that I’ll admit that I cheated, and looked up the Agori before I submitted my response. I guess that Metus has known this the entire 4 years he’s been lying around my house, and never bothered to say so. 😕 And I wonder what kind of snake he turned into. Was it a Venomari, a Hypnobrai, an Anacondrai, a Fangpyre? 😉

  • Strider October 14, 2014, 10:47 AM

Huh. I don’t know much about the previous Bionicle theme, but this new update leaves me feeling a little underwhelmed. Not sure what I expected from the Lego group, but there are a lot of cliches to be found both in the legend and the characters. Two brothers, again, after Ninjago??? One seeks too much power and it leads to his destruction, blah blah blah. I hope that the story will develop and grow, because the legend and the characters so far don’t do much for me. I do like the sets, and there aren’t any rules saying I can’t make up my own characters, but I expected a deeper story after hearing so much good things about the old Bionicle. Still, this is just the beginning themes, so I might be pre judging it too much. I’d like to know how this legend compares to that of the old Bionicle.

    • admin October 14, 2014, 10:57 AM

Strider, you raise some good points. I’m not an expert on Bionicle, but I just emailed Fikko. Hopefully he can help us out with comparing this story and characters with the original.

      • Håkan October 14, 2014, 11:26 AM

Well, this is a reboot, and as I understood it, the old storyline was just too convoluted to be able to be used as a starting point.

Anyway, I bought a big box of Hero Factory/ Bionicle stuff at a thrift store recently, so I should constract myself some Mecha Moc when I find the space and time…

    • Fikko3107 October 14, 2014, 12:54 PM

As a matter of fact, I’d like to argue that Ninjago actually copied Bionicle to some extent. In the very original lore of the story, it goes something like this (Excerpted from the Bionicle Chronicles series of novels, be warned, it’s quite long.):

      The Legend of Mata Nui
In the time before time, the Great Spirit descended from the heavens, carrying we, the ones called the Matoran, to the island paradise. We were separate and without purpose, so the Great Spirit blessed us with three virtues: unity, duty, and destiny. We embraced these gifts and, in gratitude, we named our island home Mata Nui, after the Great Spirit himself.
But our hapiness was not to last. Mata Nui’s brother, Makuta, was jealous of these honors and betrayed him. Makuta cast a spell over Mata Nui, who fell into a deep slumber. Makuta’s power dominated the land, as fields withered away, sunlight grew cold, and ancient values were forgotten.
Still, all hope was not lost. Legends told of six mighty heroes, the Toa, who would arrive to save Mata Nui. Time would reveal that these were not simply myths – for the Toa did appear on the shores of the island. They arrived with no memory, no knowledge of one another – but they pledged to defend Mata Nui and its people against the darkness. Tahu, Toa of Fire. Onua, Toa of Earth. Gali, Toa of Water. Lewa, Toa of Air. Pohatu, Toa of Stone. And Kopaka, Toa of Ice. Great warriors with great power, drawn from the very elements themselves. Together, they were six heroes with one destiny: to defeat Makuta and save Mata Nui.
      This is their story.

See some similarities? I’ll save my comparisons for another comment, but my point is, Bionicle was also initially built on the good brother, evil brother dynamic; I’ve been playing a lot of Street Fighter lately, so I’d like to point out that these are a similar concept like in the case of Gouken and Akuma. The concept of fighting brothers is quite common. Admittedly though, this does still manage to feel like it is inspired by Ninjago…hmm…

Anyways, even then, let me tell you this. The kanohi this Akimu bloke uses is the Kanohi of Creation; in the original series, this was the Mask used by Artakha, the ruler of the island of Artakha (Just go with it). The Kanohi of Creation allowed Artakha to create anything; fitting, for he was the creator of many objects in the Bionicle universe. Now, if Matoran works exceptionally hard, they’ll be sent to Artakha (the place) to work for Artakha (the being) where they can spend life idyllically creating things for Artakha. (Again, the being.) Now, if a Matoran is slacking, he’ll be sent to Karzahni, Artakha’s brother and ruler of (you guessed it) Karzahni. Karzahni was a much poorer ruler though; his job was to recondition poorly working Matoran to working shapes, but his “improvements” made them broken, deformed and destroyed. This made Artakha more popular than Karzahni. Growing bitter, Karzahni trapped the Matoran, until our heroes flooded the place and liberated the Matoran. So yeah, again, good brother, evil brother.

Wow, I’ve trailed off for quite a bit. I’ll leave you to that.

      • admin October 14, 2014, 1:20 PM

I knew I can count on you with this! 😛

      • Fikko3107 October 14, 2014, 1:46 PM

Alright! You want a comparison? Be careful what you wish for… Here’s a few points:
-First of all, Ekimu and the name Otoko are new. Makuta, however, was the name of the primary antagonist of the original series, but provided there are no retcons, he’s fairly different in this new one. (Mask maker in the new one, scheming, powerful figure whom at some point hijacked the universe.)
-I should note, however, that if the mask Ekimu wears is indeed the Kanohi of Creation, that has appeared before in the original canon; though fans who base their imaginations of the mask on the descriptions in the web serials will be severely disappointed! To quote:
“The mask was the most ornate anyone had ever seen – more than just a Kanohi, it was a true work of art. The metallic protodermis from which it was forged was arranged in intricate patterns and designs, each reflecting one of the many cultures that flourished in the universe. The eye slits were angular and pointed, giving him an air of both wisdom and a vague sense of menace.”
So yeah, Ekimu’s mask looks nothing like that.
-Okoto vaguely bears semblance to Mata Nui (The island). To compare:
        Okoto:http://biosector01.com/wiki/images/5/5c/Okoto.png
        Mata Nui:http://biosector01.com/wiki/images/d/dc/CGI_Mata_Nui_%28Island%29.png
(In my personal bias, I prefer Mata Nui’s design.)
-All the Masks have been vastly redesigned, though they resembles their older counterparts slightly; except Gali’s, that is, which looks nothing like the regular Kaukau mask. Somehow, they managed to make her arguably even less feminine than her Mistika incarnation. Yikes.

Well, that’s all I can think of now. More will likely-no, more will surely follow…

        • Strider October 14, 2014, 3:12 PM

Thanks a lot! I can respect the story more if it was borrowed, (at least in part,) from the old legends.

    • LK901 October 14, 2014, 1:55 PM

I’m not sure. It does seem a tiny bit cliched, but not overlay. I really am not sure.

Oh, btw Strider I have revived my forum in case you want to rejoin 🙂

      • Strider October 14, 2014, 3:10 PM

Ok, I’ll probably get on later :). Sorry, I’ve been absent for forever, but I’ll try to keep posting.

  • LegoUniverse Bob October 14, 2014, 11:09 AM

Admin, I think you messed up two of the prices a little. I would have thought Onua would cost the 25$ and Kopaka (I think) would cost the average. (BTW, can you tell me how to do each of those cool emotions. I only know three 😛 🙂 😀 ). Also, since everybody has been saying Bio was so good, I thought it would be a bit different from the classic “opposite side-bro gang”. Oh well, I guess it will probably have a deeper storyline, plus it seems this time it is aimed for a bit of a younger audience, seeing that it has that 6+ sign on the packaging of the exclusive mask. I hope I’m able to get a few of these, they look awesome. But I doubt my dad will let me get one, because he didn’t like the models of HF.

    • admin October 14, 2014, 11:28 AM

I just had the Canadian price added by accident. Had that fixed. You can find all the smileys you cna use here under the HOW TO COMMENT? section under the WELCOME! tab at the top of the page.

      • LegoUniverse Bob October 14, 2014, 1:51 PM

        Thanks! 😀

  • Toa of Iron October 14, 2014, 12:33 PM

Thanks for the post admin, great source of information.
just wanted to say that if you look closely at the back of Onua’s mask you can see a transparent yellow piece which might mean the old heads are returning

    • Legozebra October 14, 2014, 12:52 PM

Actually, there are new heads… Pushing down on the eyestalk causes the mask to pop off

      • Fikko3107 October 14, 2014, 1:02 PM

Ah, a great homage to the mask-popping gameplay of the original line, I bet.

  • Toa of Iron October 14, 2014, 12:33 PM

    “might”

  • Legozebra October 14, 2014, 12:51 PM

    Bios updated again! 🙂

  • ninja of stealth October 14, 2014, 12:58 PM

Awesome! Bionicle, one of the most known themes, is back! the thing is, LEGO needs to think of a new personality for things with the element of fire. it’s getting kind of old. 😀 I’ll probably will get at least one of these, I haven’t got any hero factory sets but now I’m glad I didn’t because these look way better and to top that off the storyline looks better!

    • LegoUniverse Bob October 14, 2014, 1:53 PM

      Yeah, definitely!

  • ShadowPixl October 14, 2014, 5:25 PM

Funny how Makuta isn’t actually that bad in this timeline, considering all he wanted to do was be noticed more than his brother- definitely less evil then his previous counterpart.

    • ShadowPixl October 14, 2014, 5:26 PM

By noticed more, I mean just get more attention. Anyways, it’s a lot more light-hearted and less dark then the previous line.

  • Crazybricks October 14, 2014, 8:30 PM

Off topic I just got the hun warrior and the scallywag minifigs from series 12 they are realy neat minifigs

    • admin October 15, 2014, 12:10 PM

Nice! I can’t wait to get mine! 😀

  • BuilderFox October 14, 2014, 9:12 PM

This is basically the same thing as hero factory…

Hero Factory was supposed to be the replacement for Bionicle, using the same style of sets.

Early Bionicle stuff was plagued by the collectible bits (masks, discs, etc.) first introduced in Bionicle forerunners Throwbots and Roboriders. Probably most kids and parent ignored those things anyway, and toy stores didn’t carry them all that much. Things eventually evolved into each set having some kind of game element to it, which in turn evolved to the focus that Ninjago had on the spinner sets, and Chima’s Speedorz sets. (Note that no Ninjago spinners have been released in the post-Chima Ninjago revival.)

Bionicle and Hero Factory both focus on groups of good guys that are essentially identical save for color, weapon, and slight armor details. The early groups of similar groups of color coded bad guys gave way to larger most distinct villain sets, and the occasional vehicle. Bionicle toyed with the minifig scale one year when they provided sets that represented bases or buildings, and Hero Factory did their own minifig scale this past year with sets that represented giant monster versus giant mecha.

Ninjago and Chima have regular minifigures for the characters and instead put their focus on the variety of vehicles. Ninjago and Chima also have television series, which cements a clear storyline in the head of the audience, leaving the comics and novels to be secondary sources. Hero Factory has a handful of shorter TV specials, using shorter adventures to show the toy sets in action. Bionicle never achieved a coherent single source for its story, with things spread equally across comics, books, and movies, thus diluting the impact that any of them had, and the ability to maintain a solid and clear continuity.

Are they really new popping helmets?
    If so, they’re neat.
    Very neat.

YYYYYEEEESSSS!!!!!! This is so awesome! By the way, I went to Brickworld last weekend, and it was awesome! This was my first time, and I got to see the part of the Odyssey! I also bought a bulk bricks order, which is so going to get used. 😛 On a different note, Pirates looks cool too.

I am so excited for these sets! You know, fans of the CCBS system introduced by Hero Factory have been clammoring for sets with more coverage. Most of the early sets were basically facades, with shells on the front, and the skeleton exposed in the back. They’ve been steadily improving, culminating in these beautiful Bionicle sets! Kopaka, for example, has cladding on the front and back of his lower leg. No wonder they’re so expensive; but I don’t mind at all. I think it makes for a better figure. Can’t wait to get my hands on them!

Gabriel, that’s a good notice! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! We only have to sleep a few more before these become available. 😉
