2015 LEGO Legends of Chima sets reviews

LEGO Legends of Chima had a good run with both the TV show and the sets since 2013, and the story will be wrapped up this summer with the last wave of sets. Today we will look at some of the larger LEGO Legends of Chima sets released just a few weeks ago as they are quite interesting. Even if you are not into the story, it is worth picking up a Legends of Chima set as they almost all come with transforming features and unique functions that are really fun to play with. 🙂

LEGO Legends of Chima

#70223 LEGO CHIMA ICEBITE’S CLAW DRILLER: Confront the monstrous Claw Driller and regain the CHI! The Ice Bears are attacking Bulkar in Icenhowler’s gigantic Claw Driller to try and steal the CHI! Fight ice with fire on Bulkar’s Burner Bike, steering clear of the mighty mech’s spinning drill, dual flick missiles and powerful swinging arms. Outwit the Ice Bears from the air with flying Razar and his Fire Harness. And watch out – Icepaw could launch into battle at any time on the Claw Driller’s detachable Blaster Bike! Includes 4 minifigures with assorted weapons and accessories: Icebite, Icepaw, Razar and Bulkar. 629 Pieces. Price: $49.99 – BUY HERE

#70223 LEGO Legends of Chima

This set includes one very interesting mech. It features opening jaws, posable arms with spinning drill on the right arm and dual flick missiles on the left arm, dynamic rotating torso, cockpit, shoulder attachment point for Icebite’s Supa Snowka, translucent blue ice claws, plus hidden detachable Blaster Bike with translucent blue ice elements. I always liked LEGO mechs and this is an excellent one with good balance and a chunky design. And Bulkar’s Burner Bike – such a fun name! There are lots of special elements in this set, including the minifig accessories. There is really nothing not to like. See full video-review below:

#70224 LEGO CHIMA TIGER’S MOBILE COMMAND: Battle Saber-tooth invaders with Tiger’s Mobile Command! Sir Fangar’s Saber-tooth army seems unstoppable as it freezes the kingdom of Chima and steals all the CHI. Team up with the elite Tiger warriors to launch a roaring counter-attack with their mighty Mobile Command vehicle. Detach the rear of the vehicle and convert it into a hi-tech Tiger communication base, complete with radar dish and computer panels, to plan your attack on. Engage fire CHI power mode to unveil the flame wings and fire the hidden disc shooters. Then unleash the Tiger Pursuit Bikes and track down Sir Fangar’s ice hunters! Includes 6 minifigures with assorted weapons and accessories: Tazar, Trakkar, Eris, Breezor, Sir Fangar and Sibress. 712 pieces. Price: $79.99 – BUY HERE

#70224 LEGO Legends of Chima

If you can get only one recent Legends of Chima set, buy this one. It is gorgeous, with loads of features, lots of play-value with hidden disk-shooters and two detachable bikes, a nice color-scheme, lots of minifigs and great pieces. I should also mention that the design on the tiger’s head and the fiery pattern on the shooting disks are printed. What more could we ask for? Just an all-around gorgeous set! See full video-review below:

#70228 LEGO CHIMA VULTRIX’S SKY SCAVENGER: Protect the CHI from Sky Scavenger attacks! The Vultures are on patrol over frozen Chima in their massive Sky Scavenger when they encounter Frax transporting CHI. Steer Frax’s Phoenix Flame Flyer clear of blasts from their ice orb shooters and retaliate with his flame gun. Beware of Vardy taking aim from the 360-degree rotating rear turret. The Sky Scavenger features movable wings for aerial battle poses and can be split into three, with a detachable Beak Pod, Turret Feather Fighter and Wing Outpost. That means triple trouble for Frax, soyou’ll need all your Chima warrior skills to help this brave Phoenix warrior to safeguard the CHI! Includes 3 minifigures with assorted weapons: Vultrix, Vardy and Frax. 480 pieces. Price: $39.99 – BUY HERE

#70228 LEGO Legends of Chima

At least in my opinion some of the best vehicles in the LEGO Legends of Chima sets are the ones shaped liked a bird. LEGO released some new feather and wing pieces in these sets that are really beautiful and are very unique amongst the otherwise mostly blocky range of pieces. This bird is a particularly interesting one as it has more of a sci-fi or steampunk-ish vibe. And I really like the color-scheme. Of course this vehicle can also transform and break up into smaller units, which I think is a real winning arrangement in recent LEGO sets that tremendously increases the play-value. The fiery Phoenix tribe is represented by two minifigures and a very small vehicle, but this is only a $40 set and the main feature here is really the big flyer. A really nice model indeed. See full video-review below:

Besides the above mentioned sets, there are many more that were released this January including some great battle-packs to build up your minifig armies. They are definitely worth checking out, especially since we are getting close to the end of this theme. You can find them all, along with previously released LEGO Legends of Chima sets at the Online LEGO Shop.

Oh, wow, when I read that IceBite’s Claw Driller was only $50 I thought it was a mistake, but upon checking LEGO Shop, it’s correct, which is astounding. Generally Chima sets have had a price-markup for many of their sets. I noticed that in Tiger’s Mobile Command, which is actually $80, not $70. That knocks it off my “to get” list, which is a shame as I really liked it, but I can’t afford anything more than $70 this year. 😕 I do like Vultrix’ Sky Scavenger, it comes with some great parts for $40, but I think I’ll go for Cragger’s Fire Striker from last year instead. 😐
Also, random question: why did LEGO remove the 2014 Ninjago sets from the products list, but not the 2013 sets that are almost all sold out? 😐

    • admin January 27, 2015, 11:34 AM

Yeah, the Icebite set is sweet. I do have the Mobile Command set listed at $80, did Jang mention he bought it at $70? I watched the video a couple of days ago and I don’t remember. The Fire Striker is a nice set too. As far as you random question, LEGO does a lot of very random things on their website. The more you visit the more you will notice them. They often defy logic and reason, so I just usually ignore them. 🙄

      • BLProductions January 27, 2015, 2:29 PM

Yeah… but you won’t find it for $70 regularly any more. I wonder why it couldn’t have been $70. IceBite’s set is $50 at 629 pieces, why not let Tiger’s set be $70 at 712 pieces?
Defying logic and reason is against my programming, and typos and odd additions catch my eye all the time on their site. I can’t help it. 😉
Also: http://brickset.com/article/14031/nuremberg-toy-fair-some-summer-set-images That Morro Dragon is the best-looking brick-built dragon I’ve ever seen in LEGO! Must get…. 😀

        • admin January 27, 2015, 3:15 PM

Yes, the dragon is awesome and so is the new Bounty. I’m planning to wait a few days before writing a comprehensive update on the German Toy Fair, instead of a bunch of little bits and pieces. That way it’s easier to discuss them all in one place. I’m thinking probably on the 31st. Brickset should be a good place to keep up with the latest reveals in the meantime, also the YouTube channel of Atamaii.tv, who does a great overview every year.

That’s funny that you posted the chima sets, because I was just looking over my chima set collection . I know the legend of chima series and sets has gotten mixed feelings with some collectors . I love it and the tribe battle packs are cool.

  • Strider January 27, 2015, 12:45 PM

I’m just not into Chima. The vehicles are nice designs, but not really my thing. Though I feel that despite the mixed sentiments regarding Chima, it has a lot of potential on seconday markets 5-10 years from now because it’s so unique.

  • Ninja of Stealth January 27, 2015, 1:24 PM

To all of the Chima fans out there. That sucks. I feel pretty bad for them. It’s ending, but I kind of figured that with all of the shoving-in-our-faces thing LEGO was doing.

    • BrickKittensI8 February 19, 2015, 8:06 PM

      What do you mean, “shoving-in-our-faces?”

  • Xi ninja January 27, 2015, 6:40 PM

I will admit that LEGO Chima does have a lot of very nice LEGO elements, but I don’t think that is enough to persuade me to buy them. It just isn’t my cup of tea. But Ninjago… that’s a different story.

    • Ninja of Stealth January 28, 2015, 2:40 PM

Here, here Xi ninja, you said it!

I have a question admin, is this the last year for Chima or the last wave?

      • BrickKittensI8 February 19, 2015, 8:16 PM

I’m sorry to the Ninjago fans but I think Chima is really cool. One of the only reasons I hate Ninjago is that most Ninjago fans really hate Chima. Don’t know why. Is it just an “oldies” thing?
(By oldies I mean people who like the older themes better than the new ones.) Also, I like Ninjago only for the pieces/sets. The story? Not really a big fan. I like Chima because it really grabs my attention and it’s not old and boring like a lot of the other themes. (No offense, oldies.) I agree it is getting a little tiring because it feels like everything is the same now with Chima. A new tribe comes in, they have a prolonged battle and everyone becomes friends again. It’d be nice if some things other than animals came into Chima, like werewolves, or fairies, or the animals became fairies or something. (Like, an eagle with transparent pink wings or something.) I just think that they need to add more unique characters in Chima. Or have some other new tribes that aren’t all jerks. Or an even crazier over-the-top idea is that humans come into Chima and when they drink the Chi they turn into their favorite animal.

Since you’ve done a review on Lego Pirates, are you doing a review on the Lego Classic? I understand if you don’t because there arn’t sets but bricks in a box that you can use with your imagination. Still, it would be pretty cool to have a review on this since it is new. And by the way, Lego Chima is one of my most least favorite lego!

    • admin January 27, 2015, 8:07 PM

David, good suggestion. I actually really like those sets. We have discussed them a little bit previously, but not in a full review. I will put it on the to-do list. 😉

      • David Tennant Lover January 28, 2015, 5:29 PM

Thanks for taking it into consideration! 🙂

  • Ray January 28, 2015, 2:48 AM

Hopefully Chima gets picked up again for another run the way Ninjago was.

    • BrickKittensI8 February 19, 2015, 8:04 PM

I do too. I love Chima and I think it’s a good alternative for people who aren’t into Ninjago. (No offense, Ninja lovers!) I liked Ninjago before, but now it’s a little too complicated for me. I like Chima because it shows how regular animals became super-powerful two-legs with just one taste of Chi. Like you said, I hope that if Chima ends it gets picked up again later, like Ninjago.

  • BrickKittensI8 February 7, 2015, 1:31 AM

I just want to say that Chima is NOT AT ALL ending. I have searched for chima ending on the LMB’s and so far at least 10+ people have said they emailed the mods and Chima is, in fact, not ending. They also have proof as they have copied exactly what the Mods said.

    • admin February 7, 2015, 11:18 PM

Hm… that’s interesting because it directly contradicts what LEGO employees said at the Toy Fairs. 😕

      • BrickKittensI8 February 19, 2015, 7:53 PM

I’m confused. If Chima is ending, why is the show contining? I just wanna say that if Chima ends then lego will lose a lot of Chima fans and plus, after Chima ends they might delete my favorite online lego game, Lego Legends of Chima Online. I don’t understand why they would end it because it’s a good series. Maybe it’s just because there is too much fighting and there needs to be peace again? I don’t know. I would like to understand why Chima is ending, and what will take it’s place.

        • admin February 19, 2015, 8:37 PM

I’m not sure how it will all play out, but LEGO’s own representatives said at the Toy Fair that this is the last year for Chima. Of course they can chance their mind later, but this is the plan right now.
