LEGO Star Wars Death Star sold out

Just a quick alert that the extremely popular #10188 LEGO Star Wars Death Star is now shown as sold out at the Online LEGO Shop. There has been rumors of the set going out of production for some time now, and it looks like that time has come. The LEGO Star Wars Death Star was first was released back in 2008, and with 7 years behind it, it had the longest standing production run of any recent LEGO set. ๐Ÿ™‚

On July 13th (so just a few days ago), the set was listed as “Call to check product availability” at the Online LEGO Shop. This is usually an indication that very little stock is left, and you need to call in to check if you could still place an order. By the following day the set has shown up as sold out. Usually sets that are shown as sold out will not be restocked.

If you haven’t bought the #10188 LEGO Star Wars Death Star yet, but it was on your wanted list, I would suggest that you put it on top of your priority list and act quickly before prices on the secondary market start to jump through the roof. While the Online LEGO Shop is sold out, you may still be able to find the set at local LEGO stores. Also, it is still listed on Amazon for $399.99, which is the original price. You can find it here: LEGO STAR WARS DEATH STAR ON AMAZON

The #10188 LEGO Star Wars Death Star is one of the best LEGO Star Wars sets of all time. The fact that it was designed like an open doll-house (sorry guys) makes it an excellent display-piece that is also full of play-features. There is also a huge number of minifigs with this set. Some of them feel a little outdated compared to today’s more detailed designs, but they would be easy to replace if you choose to.

Again, if this set was on your wanted list, please don’t delay. If for some reason LEGO restocks the set (although they extremely rarely do that on a retired set) it would be the same price so you won’t loose anything, but if you wait any longer and the last remaining copies sell out at retail stores expect to pay significantly higher prices. In case you were planning to get it later this year for Christmas or other holidays, just buy it now and put it away until then. Below is a full review of the set by JANGBRiCKS so you can see the details of the set for yourself.

I was hoping it would be cheaper for a few days like other sets. I was planning to buy this, but now I guess I will have to wait. I can’t buy it this soon. ๐Ÿ™

Extremely popular sets like this will never go on sale. If you can’t get it now you will likely just have to wait and see if LEGO will release something similar in the future. ๐Ÿ˜

I saw it at Walmart for %50 off in 2010. My parents didn’t let me get it though.

I know I’ll look back in five years time and think I’m stupid, but I just can’t get it right now. Oh well, there will be other great sets.

Yeah, sometimes the timing is just not right. But as you said; there will be other great LEGO sets for sure. ๐Ÿ™‚

I must admit I’m surprised this set has been available for so many years. However, a check now shows nothing available from any of the usual places I’d checked, except from 3rd-party sellers at a higher price. Amazon Germany does have 5 left at 432 Euros when I checked this morning.

There was only one sale I’ve ever seen on this — in Sept 2012 Walmart had it for $337. I got one at that time. That year was also the only time I saw the Creator Expert series (modular buildings) on sale at both Wal-mart and Amazon. Unfortunately that got me hooked on the buildings, and now I usually buy the new ones at full price because I like them so much.

Honestly I was always puzzled by the 10188 Death Star. It looked too silly to me and more like a little kid’s playset — a $400 playset. Now I’ve learned to look at it differently as a framework for showing a series of “vignettes” of life and battle aboard the DeathStar.

Personally I liked the older massive Death Star 10143 for authenticity and sheer power. (and price, as of now, wow!).

Updating my previous message: I brushed up on my German and French and the Amazon Europe sites say “Sorry, we can’t ship this item to the United States.”
I have bought Lego Technic products before from Amazon UK and Germany, but this set isn’t available (possibly due to massive size or cost).

Peter, thanks for the update. Yes, that probably has to do with the size.

    • admin July 17, 2015, 4:50 PM

Yeah, it is amazing how long this set has been around. I’m surprised there was ever a sale on it! Probably WM had an early holiday special and Amazon decided to match it – or the other way around. Yes, exactly! The set is a series of vignettes – very well said. While the other Death Star is more accurate, it appeals to less people because of the lack of play-features. This one was a great combination of playability and displayability. There are some rumors we may get an updated version at some point. ๐Ÿ™‚

Atleast I have it, looking at the LEGO Box right now. Got it for Christmas 2 years ago!

  • Jerome Paradis July 28, 2015, 11:17 AM

There is hope it is not yet out of production. On the Canadian LEGO store, it indicates Sold Out, but with the mention “We are currently making more, so please check back soon for availability.”.

    • admin July 28, 2015, 1:04 PM

Jerome, yes, there has been an update that they are making more! The Death Star will never die! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • floridabrick August 24, 2015, 5:43 AM

And ha ha, Death Star is NOT sold out. “We are currently making more, so please check back soon for availability.” But X-Wing is now SO – and has also been removed from the Exclusives section (not sure if that means anything). Man, TLG is hard to figure out some times.

    • admin August 24, 2015, 11:16 AM

Yeah, tell me about it! I’m glad the Death Star is back though! ๐Ÿ˜€
