Force Friday & new LEGO Star Wars sets

Today is Force Friday! The day Disney designated to officially unveil merchandise related to the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens film, scheduled for release in December. The madness actually started at midnight (similar in fashion to Black Friday – the beginning of the Christmas shopping season). While Force Friday is not LEGO-specific, it is significant for LEGO fans because today is the first day we supposed to see the new LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens sets – even though they have been leaked weeks ago. Anyhow, let’s pretend we haven’t seen them before, so we can be all excited for today. 🙂

LEGO Star Wars The Force Awakens - Force Friday

As I mentioned above, Force Friday is an event for the release of all LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens merchandise. Below I will focus on the new LEGO Star Wars sets, but if you would like to know about all the activities for the larger Star Wars fan-base, you can check out the official Force Friday Event Guide. One of the biggest players in any LEGO Star Wars toy related release is always Toys’R’Us. This time they are giving away a limited edition LEGO Star Wars Commemorative LEGO Brick (image below by what_the_brick) and an exclusive Star Wars poster, while supplies last. Disney, Target and Wal-Mart stores also participate in Force Friday with early openings, special events, and of course all the new merchandise. If you don’t want to get up so early and don’t want to get trampled by the galactic masses, Amazon is also running a special Force Friday release including the new LEGO Star Wars sets. You can visit Amazon’s Star Wars Store to find a wide selection of new toys and games, as well as Amazon exclusives, deals, and much more. And of course you can also get the new LEGO sets at the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop. And now let’s talk about the new LEGO Star Wars sets! 😀

    So buying that Falcon!

    • admin September 4, 2015, 10:46 AM

Yeah, it’s awesome! But my favorite is the X-wing! 😀

Just bought it from my local TRU, they got so many new cool Star Wars toys…. I can’t really relate to most of them since we haven’t seen the movie yet.

I would be buying these if I could afford them but as the Netherlands are on the higher end of the European price spectrum I will be passing. There a lot of other great sets which show much better value.

Is it just me, or does the production design for the vehicles in Episode Seven, seem really lazy? Compare these vehicles to the ships from Naboo for example or even the speeders we saw on Coruscant and these new ones are just blocks with engines (no pun intended:-)). I hated Rey’s speeder from the teaser trailer….I compared it to a “flying brick” and it’s even more apt now that it has been released as a LEGO set. The Command Shuttle doesn’t look like logical progression from The Emperor’s Shuttle, although the appear to serve the same purpose.

The LEGO sets compared to the in movie probably look great, so maybe my concerns should go to IMDB or something…hahaha.

I remember reading somewhere that the designers for the Episode VII sets were given very few reference materials. Basically just some drawings and sketches. This is likely one of the main reasons the vehicles look so generic. LEGO had not much to go on. My guess is that the next wave of sets will be a lot more accurate because they will be released after the movie.

I’m sending someone out after lunch break to get some of the action figures and probably the speeder, oh and as many of those bricks as possible!

    • TheBrickLot September 4, 2015, 3:25 PM

Wow I didn’t realize how super expensive Darth Vader is! The Toys R Us that my person went to is super slack on those bricks, they were able to get two and someone said that they bought a flashlight and got five! So if you want them come and get them!

      • admin September 4, 2015, 5:37 PM

Yeah, and not to speak of Grievous! He is $35! 😯

  • BLProductions September 4, 2015, 5:08 PM

My overall opinion of these sets is poor, but I guess admin’s note of how little info the designers had to go on explains why. Anyways, my thoughts:
    Rey’s Speeder – It’s a dark-red Spear. At 10.4 cents/piece, it’s a good deal.
Snowspeeder – Twin Rapid Shooters! It looks ok, except that as a Snowspeeder, shouldn’t it have a closed cockpit? It’s under-priced, too. 🙂
TIE Fighter – A nice set in itself, and my 2nd favorite of the wave. However, it’s so overpriced (13.5c/pc) at $70, I won’t get it. Should’ve been $60.
Poe’s X-wing – not too bad. Better than 9493 in terms of functional elements, and the cockpit. It looks like 9493… but there are more differences when compared to a normal T-65. The price isn’t bad either.
1st Order Transporter – Otherwise known as the Imperial Tub. $90 of rubbish that’s not even worth $90 with 792pcs. It is a good army builder.
Kylo’s Shuttle – the Grey Blob, which is no way worth $120. It is a great set to get for pieces, with all those Dark Grey plates. The wing function is cool.
Millennium Falcon – It’s a modified 7965, no more. They basically took the old one, redecorated it, and raised the price. The best part is Chewy’s bow-shooter, which I think is excellent. Although, I might add that if you don’t have a Falcon yet, this would be the one to get, as it is the best version so far released (UCS version excluded).
The constraction figures are cool, but once again I will pass. I have a Morro Dragon and a few speeders to get first. 😉

Agree with pretty much everything you said. 😉

    • TheBrickLot September 5, 2015, 10:52 AM

Yes I don’t have any Falcons yet so this is a must (for resell), as all Falcons do extremely well.
