Guide to feeling for LEGO Minifigs Series 14

(Written by William)

The LEGO Collectible Minifigures are back and scarier than ever? That’s right, this LEGO Minifigure Series has a unified theme! Of course we’ve seen The Simpsons, The LEGO Movie, and even a LEGO Minifig Olympic Team, but this is the first time that in the numbered series we are getting a collection of minifigures within the same genre; scary monsters! LEGO monsters have always been a personal favorite of mine, and getting these minifigs right before Halloween is a treat. Those looking for the minifigs at Target stores should use the DPCI number 204001379. Just keep in mind that Target also uses the same number to categorize LEGO The Simpson Series 2, if they got them in late. Therefore you might also mention that you are looking for the ones in the black bags. And now that’s out of the way, let’s take a look at how to feel for them within the blind baggies! 🙂

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 Collection

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - Ghost 2LEGO Minifigures Series 14 Banshee: This is one of the hardest minifigures to feel for in this series. She has those strange wispy legs with lots of odd angles that were introduced in the LEGO Ninjago line. If you have never seen or felt for this piece before, it kind of feels like a flat foot with a weird ankle. If you think you found it in the bag, make sure what you got is not the Spectre, which has the same lower body. At this point feel for the Banshee’s long hair. (It is interesting to note that her hair is a translucent color – quite unique.) There are only three Banshee minifigures in a full display-box, so she is pretty rare.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - BigfootLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Bigfoot: If you have any of the LEGO City sets, chances are you’ve come across the standard LEGO camera. That’s the piece you’ll need to find to identify this minifigure. Fortunately, it is one of the smaller pieces in the series so you will naturally look for it and it is easy to identify. Don’t get thrown off by the small handle that interrupts the square shape of the camera. There are four Bigfoot minifigures in a full display-box.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - ScientistLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Crazy Scientist: Find the beaker and you’re done identifying this minifigure. The neck of the bottle is easy to pinch and the rest of it feels kind of like a standard LEGO cup. There is no other piece in the series you can mix it up with, so you should have no trouble figuring out what it is. There are five Crazy Scientists in a full display-box, so he is common.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - FlyLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Fly Monster: If you got the Fairy from LEGO Minifigures Series 8, or the Bumblebee Girl from LEGO Minifigures Series 10, you will know what the wings feel like. They appear to be slick, but still have enough detail that you can make out the dragonfly shape with your fingers. Also, note that the left hand has a fairly large pincer instead of a normal hand, so you might feel for the torso with the unusual hand, if you are having trouble with the wings. There are four Fly Monsters in a full display-box.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - GargoyleLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Gargoyle: The wings of the Gargoyle have a distinct bat shape to them, however since that is a new piece, you might have trouble identifying it. In this case it is a lot simpler to find short legs, as this is the only minifigure with short legs in this series. They don’t bend and are pretty easy to isolate. There are four Gargoyle minifigures in a full display-box.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - RockerLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Monster Rocker: As you probably figured it out already, it is the guitar that you want to look for. It will feel like a cross between a LEGO tennis-racket and a LEGO turkey leg. It is more the size of the racket, but it has a bar in the back like the turkey leg. There are five Monster Rockers in a full display-box, so this minifigure is one of the most common ones.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - PlantLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Plant Monster: That plant helmet thing is enormous, so if you find something big protruding out of the packet that is hard to identify, go straight for the vines. The vines are common enough that you should have run across them before in other LEGO sets. They feel kind of like a flat spine. There are four Plant Monsters in a full display-box.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - SkeletonLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Skeleton Guy: As cool as the bucket looks it is too similar to a minifig head, so what you would want to find instead is the bucket handle. It’s smaller, but easier to separate out within the bag – thus easier to identify. Plus it won’t get confused with any other piece in the series because there is nothing like it. There are four Skeleton Guys within a full display-box.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - GhostLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Spectre: Just like the previously discussed Banshee, the Spectre has that strange wispy lower body piece. However, unlike the Banshee, the Spectre comes with a chain. Finding the chain with your fingers is quite easy – figuring out what you are feeling is the tough part. You will need to hold part of the chain down with one hand and try to straighten it a bit with the other. If you are feeling a mess of small parts between the two ends, you identified the chain. Once you straighten the chain, it becomes a lot simpler to recognize. There are four Spectre minifigures in a full display-box.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - VampireLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Spider Lady: This minifigure is very easy to identify as she is the only one with a slope for the bottom half of her body. She would be practically impossible to mix up with another minifigure in this series. However there are only three Spider Ladies in a full display-box, so she is one of the rarest.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - TigerLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Tiger Woman: Her tail might throw you for a loop since it is rubbery and feels kind of strange. So the part what you need to look for to identify the Tiger Woman positively is her whip. However this piece is thinner than most LEGO elements and can be tricky to locate. But when you do find it you know for sure that you have the Tiger Woman, as there is no other minifig in this series with anything similar to it. There are three Tiger Women in a full display-box, so she is considered a rare minifig.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - WolfLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Werewolf: It is all about that long bone to identify this minifigure. When you do find a long bar with your fingers, make sure you feel for both ends at the same time. You don’t want to accidently get the Monster Rocker’s guitar or the Witch’s broom mixed up with the bone. There are three Werewolves in a full display-box, so this minifigure is also pretty rare.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - WitchLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Witch: With all the great parts she has, it comes down to the broom. It is one of the longest pieces in the series, and has the iconic swept shape on one end. The hat and the cat would have been great pieces to look for, however this series already has so many weirdly shaped pieces they wouldn’t be the best to use for identification. Stick with the broom and you can’t miss. There are three Witch minifigures in a full display-box, so she is another rare one.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - BusinessLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Zombie Businessman: Nothing fancy here as far as identification. Go for the 2×2 tile and you are done identifying this minifigure. No other character has such a piece, so you are very safe with that one and it is easy to feel for. Also, notice the new hairpiece! There are three Zombie Businessmen in a full display-box, so yeah, he is also rare.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - CheerleaderLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Zombie Cheerleader: Those pompoms will really mess with your head. This is because they feel very much like a minifigure head, if you’re not careful. However, if you are too focused, it may feel like you have one too many hair pieces. So what you need to do is gather all the minifigure head shaped pieces in one place inside the bag with your fingers. If there are three, then you most likely got the Zombie Cheerleader. There are three Zombie Cheerleaders in a full display-box, so this is another rare minifigure.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - PirateLEGO Minifigures Series 14 Zombie Pirate: This zombie is best known for his sword. It is broad and distinct. If you are still not sure, try finding the legs. One is a peg-leg so it kind of stands out. However, for most people the sword would be extremely obvious. There are five Zombie Pirates in a full display-box, so he is one of the most common ones.

LEGO Minifigs Series 14 - Monsters

One way to quickly identify the above mentioned parts and accessories is to first shake the baggies so that all small parts fall into one corner. This way you can identify them quickly. It is also a good idea to have a printout of the minifigures with accessories that you can look at as a reference while you are searching for the minifigs you want. You can go through a whole box of Collectible Minifigures quite quickly following these simple methods, and as a bonus you will also improve your tactile skills! 😀

Excellent guide, this will help me with my hunt for the Specter and Plant Monster. 🙂 One thing, though: in this series, Bigfoot is called Squarefoot (you know, since he’s got square feet 😉 ), and his camera is because he’s an amateur photographer. According to the bios, anyway.
Also, 4 of the 7 SW Ep. VII sets have been revealed already… I was hoping the prices would change but they haven’t. 🙁 Pics are on Brickset.

LOL for Squarefoot! We will talk about the SW sets tomorrow, but yeah, the whole hype and stampede is going to start tonight at midnight. 😀

My local Target had them on Sept. 1st. I’ve managed to get 12 of the 16. Disappointingly, I was only able to guess 11 out of the 12 correctly and could have sworn I had 13 in my cart, but only got charged and walked out with 12. It’s the first time I have ever guessed one wrong.

The one I got wrong was the pirate (which I didn’t really want). My guess is I thought I had the witch. I’m wondering If I mistook the hat for a cat, I dunno. I can’t figure out how that happened unless I accidentally mixed my piles (I had one pile of definites and a pile of questionables).

The other one I thought I had but must have gotten left at the store is the skeleton guy. Feeling for the pumpkin basket was obvious.

The ones I purposefully chose not to get was the Monster Rocker and Spider Lady. The Zombie Pirate was the other one, but I have him by mistake.

I guess I need to go back and find the witch and skeleton guy.

  • VirtualMirage September 3, 2015, 11:33 AM

I also meant to add that one of the big reasons I want to skeleton guy is I want to use him instead of the girl in the new Trick or Treat seasonal vignette. I thought it would be pretty funny having a minifigure dressed up as a skeleton trick or treating at a skeleton’s house.

    • admin September 3, 2015, 2:27 PM

      That’s a fun idea! 😀

    Here are some additional tips:

The Cheerleader I found by feeling the hair. It’s the only one with pig tails and feels very different than the other head pieces.

The witch I would pay extra attention to when feeling the broom. I didn’t realize how long the bone that comes with the werewolf is. It’s almost as long, if not as long, as the witch’s broom. If you are not careful, you might mistake the two if that is all you are looking for.

The tiger woman, I felt for the ears and shape of the hair on the head piece.

The fly monster I felt for the antenna on the head. Dead give away.

The zombie business man you can feel for the 2×2 tile, as you mentioned. I felt for the briefcase. Sometimes those tiles get lodged in the folder papers and you can’t find them. I also managed to feel the hair out too since his is the only hair piece in the set that is small with little nub on top.

The crazy scientist I fount it harder to feel for the beaker than it is to feel for the head piece. The head piece has a very distinctive shape and feel.

The spectre and banshee are easy to narrow down to by their leg pieces. To determine between the two I felt, again, the head pieces. The banshee’s is very rough/textured feeling while the spectre’s is smooth and instead of being wide open on one side feels more like a hole.

Squarefoot I felt for the head, specifically the bottom pointy part of the head and its pointy sides.

The plant monster was easy. The head piece is huge and easy to feel the curves and mouth opening.

The gargoyle I looked specifically for the shorter legs. If the legs don’t bend, then it is most likely the gargoyle.

    I hope that helps.

I’ve got some of these already, waiting for payday to get some more. My toys R us locks up the figures in the R-zone game cases so you can’t feel them. but i got a plant man anyway.
Thinking about going to the LEGO store for the trick or treat set but don’t want to fight holiday crowds. might wait till next week.

I managed to find the skeleton guy and the witch on my lunch break. So I am done with this series now that I have found all the ones I wanted.

  • rainey September 3, 2015, 4:28 PM

I totally suck at this. I only want 5 of them. I bought 3 after carefully feeling and not even one was one of the ones I wanted.

I’ll give it another try and then probably give up. I resent spending a fortune and ending up with mostly what I don’t want.

    • admin September 4, 2015, 9:33 AM

Hm… I remember that when the first minifigs came out I was really bad at feeling for them too. However William (who wrote this guide) thought me some tricks. William is legally blind and is expert at feeling with his fingers. One thing he told me is to shake the bags first, so all the small parts fall into one corner. Then it is easier to find what you are looking for (which is usually the small parts).

Another thing I would suggest is that you buy the minifigs you want on BrickLink from a seller who has them still in the package. This way you will definitely get what you want, but still have a chance to feel for them and improve your skills. Do not cut the packages open, but make it a game to try to feel them out and guess which one is inside. Once you can accurately guess all the minifigs, you are ready to go back to the store and hunt on your own. It took me until Series 3 to be fully accurate. So yeah, it is a bit of learning and experimenting, but it is fun.

And one more thing; when you feel for the packages, close your eyes. The thing is that for us seeing people, we are not fully in touch with our tactile sensors. Even though we are feeling the package with our fingers, we still concentrate our eyes on it and try to see through the package. This won’t work. Instead, take your eyes out of the game completely by closing them (or later just looking in another direction is enough), and really concentrate on the sensations in your fingers. It is actually a really interesting learning experience. 🙂

      • rainey September 4, 2015, 5:22 PM

Thank you for the helpful suggestions! I guess I really would rather pay a bit of a premium and get what I want. It will cost be less in the long run.

Some trivia. It looks like the head of the plant monster is the remaining human part of it, but I wonder if it isn’t supposed to represent a poor human eaten by a giant flesh-eating plant. It bears a striking resemblance to the flesh-eating plant in the cult movie Little Shop of Horrors…

    • admin September 4, 2015, 9:23 AM

Yeah, I thought of that too. Little Shop of Horrors was the only theatrical performance I had to walk out of. I was a teen and had nightmares after that for weeks. My dad (who took me) felt so bad…

  • TheBrickLot September 3, 2015, 7:55 PM

I don’t like monsters don’t do Halloween or stuff so.. probably will only be getting the gargoyle because it’s a gargoyle, but my employees say that it would be wise to at lease buy the most popular ones which they say (They base this stuff off of most talked about on blogs and such) are the banshee and zombies.

    • admin September 4, 2015, 9:34 AM

Yeah, the gargoyle is awesome! I’m planning to get at least two. And yes, most of these minifigs are going to be hot sellers for years to come. 😉

  • insectoid19 September 3, 2015, 10:21 PM

    I. Want. All. Of. Those. LOL, I really like the crazy scientists head! 🙂

  • Chris of Yoda Archives September 4, 2015, 9:49 PM

Wish I’d know Spider Lady was a rare. I had a slope piece in a bag, last week. But I didn’t know how many slope pieces were i n the series and I was trying to get plant guy and the fly.

    I’ll search again this weekend.

  • Bastiaan September 22, 2015, 5:22 PM

    Will, you are amazing!
This is incredibly well written, and I immediately thought; ‘wow, finally someone who writes with clarity who really knows his lego!’
I too was a huge lego fan of the castle sets in the 80s and 90s.
When I read that you were blind, the detail of your writing, understanding and amount of lego related articles made sense! Bravo, you are a truely deadicated fan! I hope youll mail me if you pass through SF, i’d love to show you a small part of my collection here!;)

I’m also curious if you have any sight at all, as in, are you still able to get some sense of the decals/graphics or colours?

All the best and thanks again!

    B

    • admin September 22, 2015, 9:18 PM

Bastiaan, I forwarded your comment to Will. He said he will email you. Hope you guys can get together. 🙂

  • sherry September 25, 2015, 7:32 PM

I feel a little dumb posting this, but can you help? I can’t figure out how the ghost is supposed to hold his chain! does it really SNAP onto his hands somehow, or doesn’t he actually HOLD it?

what a dumb question, right?? but inquiring minds want to know!
    thanks

    • admin September 25, 2015, 7:58 PM

Sherry, that’s not a bad question at all! The little round part at the end of the chain can attach to the top of the minifig’s hand. Kind of like putting a stud on top. So he is not holding the chain with his hand like a real human would, but like if you would put your hand in a fist and place the round part of the chain on top of it. This is how minifigs hold a lot of accessories. Hope that helps! 😉

      • sherry September 25, 2015, 8:31 PM

thank you!! I did try that but couldn’t get it to snap in, it was just resting there. I will try again, THANKS!!

  • sherry September 25, 2015, 8:33 PM

no it is me again boy do I feel dumb!!! I got it — the bigger part fits OVER. duhhh LOL….

thank you! I hope I find the witch, I want her.
    xo sher

    • admin September 26, 2015, 8:15 AM

No problem. I’m glad you figured it out. It is not an intuitive way to hold something. Yeah the witch is awesome too! 😈

  • olly October 2, 2015, 5:26 PM

Hi, can anyone help me out, i found the skeleton man in my local Tesco, but wasnt too sure about it, so did hide it. I just wanted to know if its possible to fit the pumpkin piece on to the neck part as i wanted to create a Headless Horseman figure.

I plan on using the collar/cape from the alien woman from series 7 (i think) to make it look authentic, but have no idea if it’ll work.
    Please help 🙂

    • admin October 2, 2015, 5:38 PM

No, the little Halloween bucket is not meant to be used as a head piece. But there is a Headless Horseman already with a pumpkin head (a difference piece) in the #75901 LEGO Scooby Doo Mystery Plane Adventures set. It would be easier to just to get that one. 🙂

  • olly October 2, 2015, 5:35 PM

Does anyone know if the skeleton trick or treat mans pumpkin bucket will fit on the neck of a minifigure, i wanted to create a Headless Horseman.

  • Cat October 14, 2015, 9:47 PM

Thanks for the great tips! I’ve never collected minifigures before, and your tips have really helped me out. I have all of them except for the Witch, and only managed to get one duplicate.

    Thanks!

    • admin October 15, 2015, 10:39 AM

Cat, I’m glad the guide helped. Enjoy your minifigs! 😀

  • Td4 October 28, 2015, 3:49 PM

I love this Halloween series of minifigs! I wanted the werewolf which I spent quite a bit of time finding. Then I got distracted and needed to leave so I grabbed two more random bags and ended up with THREE werewolves! According to this post I got all the Wolves in the pack. Pretty disappointing, is there anywhere to trade these?

    • admin October 28, 2015, 4:33 PM

Wow! You are lucky for getting all three of them! If you don’t want to keep them you can sell them on eBay or BrickLink, or if you have a local LEGO club you can trade them. You can also try trading them on BrickLink or the Brickset forum or the Reddit LEGO group. 🙂

  • Left Handshake August 4, 2016, 11:59 AM

Funny that the Banshee is “rare”…I keep accidentally picking her whenever I go to my local Walgreens, and now I’m stuck with three.

    • admin August 4, 2016, 12:01 PM

Ahhh… poor Banshee! Maybe nobody wants her? I think it is an excellent minifigure! Really unique! 🙂

      • Left Handshake August 4, 2016, 12:27 PM

Now don’t get me wrong, I think she’s great, too – but that blasted Spectre keeps eluding me! It wasn’t all a bad ending – I gave the third Banshee to a co-worker and she loved it! It reminded her of herself in the morning before she’s had her coffee. 😛

        • admin August 4, 2016, 2:03 PM

Maybe the Banshee got the Spectre out of jealousy? I like them both, but I won’t trust either of them. 🙄
