LEGO Spooky House in LEGO Club Magazine

In the recently released September-October issue of the LEGO Club Magazine there is a page where all the new LEGO Collectible Minifigs Series 14 characters are featured in a Halloween setting. The picture is fun, however what really caught my attention is the spooky house included in the layout. Rather than just being a digital background image, this is a fully built LEGO Halloween House that somewhat resembles the #10228 LEGO Monster Fighters Haunted House from 2012 – one of the best and most detailed LEGO houses ever released. 🙂

LEGO Club Magazine Halloween House

The LEGO Spooky House has the same sand-green, tan and gray color-scheme with a black roof and exposed dark-tan masonry-bricks as the LEGO Monster Fighters Haunted House. However the construction of this house is much simpler and smaller. The entire building is on a 10×8 stud plate, and it is two stories tall with a third story attic. There is also a bit of an archway sticking out on one side. Looks like LEGO knew there is going to be quite a bit of interest in this house because they thoughtfully included the following disclaimer: “Spooky House Not Included in Product 71010” – which is the number for the LEGO Collectible Minifigs Series 14.

If you are planning to have a LEGO setup for Halloween, I think it would be worth building the LEGO Spooky House, because it looks really good. There are no building instructions, however the picture is clear enough that you could recreate at least the front and one side of the structure. The other two sides you would have to design yourself, but it should be easy enough. It also appears that this house has a modular design, meaning that the second and third floors are removable. Based on the size and style you could even add this as an end-of-the row spooky house to your LEGO Modular Building layout – just sayin’… 😈

LEGO Club Magazine Haunted House

Since the LEGO Spooky House is so well developed I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point LEGO releases this as a set, or at least makes the instructions available. If not, you can still build it yourself without much trouble – especially if you have the now retired #10228 LEGO Monster Fighters Haunted House. Also, don’t forget about the other LEGO Halloween sets we talked about before; the #40122 LEGO Halloween Trick or Treat set and the entire LEGO Collectible Minifigs Series 14. You can find them at the Online LEGO Shop.

When my local Lego store opened about a year ago they had the Monster Fighters’ house. There was one built and on display in the store. I was enamored by it but it was so expensive I passed on it. Now I could kick myself.

I hope they do come up with a future version of a Halloween house.

You’re right, of course, that a clever person could construct the one in the newsletter. But you’d have to have a mighty collection of bricks or be organized enough to anticipate all the bricks you’d need and order them. I, alas, am in neither category. But maybe there will be something coming for the spooky minifigs. My fingers are crossed.

PS The gargoyle is sooo cute hanging upside down from the arch.

Reminds me that I wish they had included more minifigs with short legs in that collection to pass as little Trick or Treaters.

      • admin September 22, 2015, 1:50 PM

Yes, the Gargoyle is one of my favorites too! 😈

    • admin September 22, 2015, 1:52 PM

Yes, the Monster Fighters House was one of the best LEGO houses ever released, and I also hope that they will give us something similar in the future as well. As far as building a house like in the LEGO Club Magazine, you can just use it as an inspiration and build something similar. After all scary houses can be scary in so many different ways! 🙄

Yes! I had the same reaction when I read through my kids’ Lego Club magazine. I totally wanted to build that spooky house! I scanned every inch of that magazine hoping there would be some link to online instructions. No luck. But as you said, it shouldn’t be too hard to recreate from the photo.

I too am hoping instructions are released sometime in the future. The house is well developed, but not over-the-top as some MOCs tend to be. I’m not quite sure this makes sense, but it has that perfect Lego-esque feeling that you might expect to see in a real set. Fingers crossed!

    • admin September 22, 2015, 1:54 PM

James, I had the feeling also that this might be a future LEGO set. It just looks too developed to be built just for the magazine. I hope we are right! 😀

    “So what do you think?”
I think I know the answer to the quiz on that page. 😉
The house looks cool, but I can’t build it in those colors due to my lack of sand green parts. However, my brother noted its familiarity, and we discovered that the Spooky House is actually a modified version of the B-model of LEGO Creator 5891, which can be seen here: https://brickset.com/sets/5891-1/Apple-Tree-House So my brother can build it, but with different colors. 😉

    • admin September 22, 2015, 1:57 PM

Oh! You are right! Your brother is a genius! 😀

      • Håkan September 22, 2015, 6:38 PM

Yeah, I saw it mentioned on the Brickset forum.

Also that it looked digitally manipulated, that passage there by the right with the gargoyle isn’t really possible to construct, looking like that…

        • admin September 22, 2015, 9:16 PM

Why not? That arch looks fine to me. And the gargoyle could be attached like that with a couple of half pins.

        • BLProductions September 22, 2015, 9:29 PM

Yeah, they beat me there. I hadn’t read that post before.
I read about the gargoyle-arch thing as well. It’s possible to build (after all, it’s part of the official set), but it is rather out of proportion with the rest of the building in the scene. 😕

          • admin September 22, 2015, 9:34 PM

I think it looks just fine. I don’t know why people say it looks manipulated. Especially now that we know it’s based on a real LEGO set. 😕

            • rainey September 23, 2015, 12:59 PM

I think what they’re saying is that the column on the right looks longer than the attachment to the wall on the left. Sorta like an MC Escher optical illusion.

I suspect it’s a digital adjustment to the image to bring it into the foreground while the wall remains in the background.

              • admin September 23, 2015, 1:09 PM

But that’s exactly how it is built in the #5891 LEGO Creator Apple Tree House, which is the exact same design just in a different color. Two square bricks with three round bricks on top, than the arch. I just confirmed by looking at the instructions. I think it is just the shadows that are confusing people. But as far as the structure, there is no adjustment from the original.

                • BLProductions September 23, 2015, 5:00 PM

Yes, there is no adjustment to the house itself. What confused some Brickset readers is that the house is placed at an angle into the picture via computer, and the CGI grass and such added cover up the base of the house, which makes it look out of line. That’s all it is (I think).

                  • admin September 23, 2015, 8:37 PM

I agree that it is the shadows at the bottom of the house and the angles that is creating the confusion. Well, the house is haunted, so illusions make sense. 😈

The trick or treat set and the monster minifigs are both sold out online.

    • Glenn September 22, 2015, 12:58 PM

Check your local lego store (if you have one). The one near San Diego still had plenty of both a fe days ago.

    • admin September 22, 2015, 2:00 PM

Maria, yeah, seasonal sets tend to go very fast. You might still be able to find it locally though. As far as the minifigs, they have been in and out of stock. It showed as sold out, then a couple of days ago it was back in stock again, then sold out again. I would suggest to check every couple of days to see if they restock. Also, check locally. TRU, Target, Wal-Mart and other stores also carry them, if you don’t have a LEGO store near you.

It’s to the Bike shop and Cafe and toy and grocery sets what the haunted house was to the modular buildings, very nice. Time to delve into my pile of sand-green bricks.

    • admin September 22, 2015, 2:01 PM

I’m jealous of your pile of sand-green! One of my favorite colors! 😀

  • mmcleung September 22, 2015, 12:31 PM

I have set up by using #10937 Batman Arkham Asylum which I think is even better than #10228.

    • admin September 22, 2015, 2:01 PM

      That’s a great idea too! 😀

  • June Sloniger September 22, 2015, 4:14 PM

You could probably put it together from the Monster Fighters Hounted House bricks. It costs about $500 to $800 on ebay. I keep adding to mine every year. It reminds me of the Harry Potter “Burrows” set.

  • insectoid19 September 22, 2015, 6:19 PM

Funny you should mention this! I had the exact same thoughts about how that would he an awesome build! I’m definitely going to build something like this for Halloween, although I did build a MOC haunted house with angled black roofing that splits open in the middle in similar fashion to the Lego monster fighters haunted house set itself and that may be sufficient, but hey, that haunted house looks almost too cool not to build! ?

  • Russell September 22, 2015, 6:41 PM

A nice alternative to the Spooky House is this custom:

Oh, wow! That is really nice! 😀

    • insectoid19 September 23, 2015, 9:03 AM

Yeah, cool! I like its compatibility with the modular buildings!
