LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto-1 & Ecto-2 coming!

A few days ago LEGO revealed the first official images of the #75828 LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto-1 & Ecto-2 via their Facebook and Twitter pages. The set is based on the new Ghostbusters movie directed by Paul Feig and scheduled for release this summer. So yes, this is going to be the second LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto-1. Images and details below. ๐Ÿ™‚

#75828 LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto 1 & Ecto 2

There are some interesting differences and even improvements on the #75828 LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto-1 compared to the original #21108 LEGO Ideas Ghostbusters Ecto-1 from 2014. While in the earlier Ecto-1 the doors and trunk were not functional (so you had to pretend that the minifigs could get in and out in the normal way), the upgraded version got opening front doors and an opening trunk.

Another major improvement is that now you can sit four minifigures easily in two rows, while in the earlier version that was not possible. This also means that the steering-wheel in the new version is placed properly to the left, instead of being in the middle. The roof can still be removed – like in the earlier version – to get full access to the inside, and the top is full of awesome ghostbusting stuff.

It appears that the pinstripes on the sides are printed, and the Ghostbusters logo and the license-plate are definitely printed as they were printed in the original set. However most of the other decorations are stickers. They don’t appear to be too essential however, so if you don’t like stickers you can probably leave them off.

#75828 LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto 1 Details

While the size of the new Ecto-1 looks the same as the original, and the shaping is also quite similar, it will be interesting to see the differences in details and building techniques between the two versions. I really like the original Ecto-1 and I like this one too. They are excellent examples of minifig-scale classic cars, and could be used as a study to build similar vehicles.

#75828 LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto 1 Motorcycle

The Ecto-2 bike that comes with the set is pretty basic, and unfortunately the Ghostbusters logo at the front is a sticker. There is not a whole lot more to say about the bike, so I will just leave it at that.

#75828 LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto-1 Minifigures

The #75828 LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto-1 & Ecto-2 includes in minifigure form the new female cast for the rebooted movie; Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig), Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy), Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones). Just look at those gorgeous new hairpieces! The fifth human minifigure is Kevin (Chris Hemsworth), who – it appears – at some point in the movie becomes possessed. And there is also a scary looking red demon with translucent black wings and gorgeous printing. It is already on my list of most favorite minifigures ever released by LEGO. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

#75828 LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto 1 Equipment

Of course we also get all the ghostbusting equipment, including ghost-traps and proton-packs with new printing. Notice that the proton-packs include the gold-bar piece in black! There are also other exciting new elements that you will notice from the pictures.

#21108 LEGO Ghostbusters

The #75828 LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto-1 & Ecto-2 will be available in July 1st for $59.99. This is $10 more than the first version, however here we get two extra minifigures and a bike, so the price seems fair. If you are interested in the original #21108 LEGO Ideas Ghostbusters Ecto-1, it is still available at the Online LEGO Shop. My guess is that once the new version gets released, the old one will get phased out. So you have a few more months to get it. Also, don’t forget about the ultimate LEGO Ghostbusters set, the #75827 LEGO Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters. You can find the Ecto-1 under the LEGO Ideas section and the Firehouse HQ under the LEGO Ghostbusters section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Help! I can’t decide which one I like better!

    • admin February 10, 2016, 11:42 AM

Yeah, it is not an easy decision as they are similar but also different. I like a little bit of both. I already have the first version and plan to get the second one as well. If you can’t decide I would suggest to wait until comparison reviews become available. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m slightly confused, are there 2 more cars coming? Or, are you using Ecto-2 in reference to the one to be released.

    • admin February 10, 2016, 11:40 AM

Yes, it is confusing. The name of the new set is #75828 LEGO Ghoustbusters Ecto-1 & Ecto-2. The Ecto 1 is the vehicle, and the Ecto-2 is the motorcycle. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • TheBrickLot February 10, 2016, 12:01 PM

Ew, just ew, people are so excited that you can fit all four figures in it, but that is easy when it is almost 30 studs long! The older one is about 23.

    • admin February 10, 2016, 12:10 PM

Are you sure about that? I compared it to the first Ecto-1 and it appears that the new one has the same length of 26 studs. I just measured my Ecto-1 from tip to tip and it is definitely 26 studs long. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • TheBrickLot February 10, 2016, 12:11 PM

And I’m not talking about 26 or 27, I’m talking 28 or 29 or 30! that is just 2 studs away from being a baseplate!

      • admin February 10, 2016, 12:14 PM

As I mentioned previously, I’m pretty sure it is the same. It also makes sense because a 30-stud long Ecto-1 won’t fit in the Firehouse, but the 26-stud one does. ๐Ÿ˜‰

        • admin February 10, 2016, 12:15 PM

Look at the above picture of the new one. If you count the studs, it comes to 26. ๐Ÿ˜‰

          • TheBrickLot February 10, 2016, 12:29 PM

I did, I got 28, that is including the extra parts one the sides, and sorry if it seemed like I yelled earlier, I guess I didn’t refresh and I thought I was just replying to myself. Also I don’t have the old Ecto, but I counted it using the model at the LEGO store. Also this new Ecto isn’t in any way shape or form supposed to go with the FireHouse so that may be the reason.

            • TheBrickLot February 10, 2016, 12:31 PM

Also the new Ecto is about 9 studs wide (including the curved side parts) and has no side windows, where the older Ecto is a little over 6 and has side windows.

              • TheBrickLot February 10, 2016, 12:37 PM

I’m not trying to rant and seem like this is a terrible set (I LOVE the part and will probably get like 10 to sell on BrickLink) I just don’t understand why people say they love it so much, it is very big, although it is literally impossible to make a minifigure sized car as because of a minifigure’s weird proportions. (I did the math a minifigured scaled normal car would be about 7 studs long 3.5 bricks tall and 9 suds wide.)

                • admin February 10, 2016, 12:47 PM

Yes, the Ecto-1 is big. It is a big old style vehicle in real life as well, but I agree that the LEGO version is out of human proportions. As you said, minifigs are kind of sized funny, so it would be difficult to create a vehicle that is both in proportion to minifigs and humans. I do like the Ecto-1, but I wouldn’t put it on my modular street because it looks too big. I have it displayed separately because of the different scale. ๐Ÿ™‚

              • admin February 10, 2016, 12:39 PM

The old Ecto-1 is also 9 studs wide (including the curved sides). I have it right here in front of me. If you look at the front of the old Ecto-1 it is easy to count the studs: 2 for the 2×4 slopes on each side of the hood, so that’s 4 studs, and four studs for the middle of the hood. That’ 8. Then the sloping sides add about another stud, just like in the new one.

            • admin February 10, 2016, 12:35 PM

No problem at all. I was pretty sure it was just a refresh issue, and your thoughtful contributions are always appreciated. I’m counting 26 studs long on the new Ecto-1: 10 studs from the very front to the end of the windshield, 11 from the end of the windshield to the back of the ladder, and 5 at the very back. Is that not what you are getting?

I know that the new Ecto-1 technically doesn’t have to fit the HQ, but many people will fit it anyway. Especially those who don’t have the original Ecto-1. So it makes sense to allow it to fit. ๐Ÿ™‚

              • TheBrickLot February 10, 2016, 12:40 PM

At the LEGO store they have ample quantity of the old Ecto right beside the FireHouse, I know cause I just went there two days ago which was my fourth time this year. (because I am building Avengers Tower between 4-6 feet tall)

                • admin February 10, 2016, 12:43 PM

I’m thinking that the original Ecto-1 will likely be discontinued once the new one is out. That’s just my thinking though – it just doesn’t seem to make sense to have two very similar vehicles to be on the market. The Firehouse and the new Ecto-1 however should be around for at least until 2018. That’s what I meant by missing out on the first one. ๐Ÿ™‚

                  • TheBrickLot February 10, 2016, 12:49 PM

Oh, then as a reseller I better stock up! Also to bad I can’t just combine my comments here and use them as my history essay, it would be about 6 pages, right?

                    • TheBrickLot February 10, 2016, 12:50 PM

I think that I should build a minifigure scale car as I mention above. lol Once I’m done with Stark Tower of course.

                    • admin February 10, 2016, 12:53 PM

Yeah, I would actually stock up on the old one rather than the new one. The old one is also a LEGO Ideas set, and they tend to have s much shorter lifespan than regular sets. Remember that there is a Double VIP points thingy next month. ๐Ÿ˜€

I just checked; you got 203 comments so far. That is still far behind Jay, who has 2884 comments – I think he holds the record. So you have some ways to go to catch up. But yours may still qualify for a history essay, while his would be a whole book. ๐Ÿ˜‰

                    • TheBrickLot February 10, 2016, 1:11 PM

Well, his aren’t as lengthy as mine (I think) as I can rant/talk quite a while in person to person and also apparently on the internet as well, Admin I’m gonna send you a pic. of what I have so far on Stark Tower as I want to keep it secret till later this month when I’ll have it about four feet tall, and then on to six feet tall baby! Sigh there I go again and that is only two sentences, three if you include this one that you are reading right now, oh and for some reason I couldn’t reply to your comment so if this is in a weird place that is why. AHHHH

                    • admin February 10, 2016, 1:22 PM

Looking forward to see your Star Tower! I did watch your videos on the progress. I think it is going to be awesome! ๐Ÿ™‚

I have comment threads set up so they only go ten comments deep. Otherwise the column gets skinner and skinnier to the point that it is hard to read.

                    • TheBrickLot February 10, 2016, 1:24 PM

Oh, Then what do you do if someone has like 50 comments? Like on the about you page.

                    • admin February 10, 2016, 1:30 PM

The setting is only for comment threads, not for comments themselves. So if two people are going back and forth like we just did, once the comment tread reaches 10 comments, the next comment will be on it’s on line instead of being a sub for a previous comment. Nothing gets lost or anything, so no worries. ๐Ÿ™‚

                    • TheBrickLot February 10, 2016, 1:33 PM

Oh, YAAAAAAAAA! I have almost completed my JARVIS makeover on my computer!

                    • admin February 10, 2016, 1:41 PM

That must look really cool! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • TheBrickLot February 10, 2016, 2:37 PM

So, what do you think about Stark?

    • admin February 10, 2016, 4:16 PM

Sorry I was out. We were testing our roof. It had a leak, so we had it fixed and put up a hose on the roof to see if it works. Playing with water is always fun. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Your Star Tower is huge!!! Are you sure it is going to fit in your house when it is done? ๐Ÿ™„
