Fun LEGO Brick Separator creations

The LEGO Brick Separator is a very useful tool to separate LEGO elements and save them from teeth-marks (and indirectly save your teeth too!). While the first generation of the LEGO Brick Separator was only included with large and exclusive LEGO sets (and thus was quite rare), the updated new Brick Separator is added to pretty much all medium to large sets. This of course means that most LEGO fans will have quite a few of them. In fact, some LEGO fans use the number of Brick Separators they have as a status symbol – the more Brick Separators, the more LEGO rich they are! 🙂

Having so many Brick Separators in the hands of creative people almost guarantees that these useful orange (and less frequently green) tools will end up in some very clever LEGO creation. After all, the Brick Separator has several standard connection points; two studs on top, tubes on the bottom and even a small axle. So what sort of things can you build with a Brick Separator? I will show you some examples below for inspiration.

First up is a cute momma and baby duck pair by Conrado PLG, with two Brick Separators forming momma duck’s beak.

The LEGO Separaptor by Alexander incorporates five Brick Separators for the body of this prehistoric creature.

Somewhere between creature and machine is this LEGO Clown Fish X-wing Fighter by dr_spock_888 with sixteen Brick Separators. The same builder also created the various LEGO Brick Separator weapons below.

Because of the shape, connection points, ridges, and color of Brick Separators, they are most often used for various vehicles and spaceships. The first two are examples by Simon Liu, and the last two are by F@bz.

And how about using several Brick Separators to make a hand? Like in this LEGO creation by Jalkow.

Building with LEGO Brick Separators is often used as challenge for contests during LEGO fan events, and this is something you can also do at home; see who can build the most clever LEGO creation with Brick Separators! Keep in mind that if you use up all your Brick Separators to build something, you won’t have anything to take it apart with. 🙄

Is that the new style brick separator in green in that spaceship? I see the old style one is the backbone though.

    • admin March 28, 2016, 10:24 AM

Yes, that’s the new brick separator in green. The green one is very rare, as it was only available in two sets; the Horizon Express and the Palace Cinema.

I have the old one in gray… Three of them, IIRC, two from a flea market Dacta find… The gray variant might have been more common than the green…

Yes, I think older LEGO fans have more of the gray version. I have never even seen one. Might pick on up on eBay though just because it is cool. Also, according to BrickLink, there is a new bluish-gray version of the old brick separator, but it was only available in one service-pack type thingy.

I remember having to search, and pay extra for the grey version when I was a kid. Now it kind of irks me that they’re just giving them away with the larger sets. It kind of makes me feel like all my efforts were in vain.

The old and new versions are actually different enough that you can still get good use out of the old version for things you can’t use the new version for. For example you can only separate stacked plates with two old brick separators. You can’t do the same with the new ones as the axle pusher is in the way. So it is good to have some of the older ones around. 🙂

I believe I have an old one in green and dark grey, also Admin I got the Statue of Liberty and the UCS Imperial Star Destroyer!

That’s going to be a lot of building! Have fun! 😀

I wonder why the color difference? Could it be as simple as they didn’t have orange ABS granulate in that day? LOL

        • admin March 29, 2016, 10:03 AM

The Horizon Express is pretty obvious. Most of the pieces in that set are orange, so to stand out, LEGO had to make the brick separator in a different color. Otherwise it is really difficult to find it in a sea of orange pieces as you are building. In the Palace Cinema there are no orange pieces, but both sets are from 2013, so perhaps LEGO made too many green ones and decided to include them with the modular. 🙂

Oh, you are very welcome. And if you ever want us to cover something, feel free to let me know. 🙂

I thought that was the “old green” one at first. I’ve one old green and a few of the old grey hanging about. Probably about 60-70 of the current orange ones. I give them to any of my friends kids who don’t have one as parents obviously dont always buy the bigger sets. I’ve also put them in party bags with a polybag to help give them new homes. Selling them never crossed my mind (I assumed most people would have too many like me)….

    • admin March 28, 2016, 11:09 AM

Yeah, there is an old green version in the middle of the body of that little ship, but the wings are the new green one. Nice idea to give extra brick separators to LEGO fans who don’t have them. On BrickLink they sell for a few pennies, so they are really inexpensive. They seem to be selling pretty well based on the 6-months Price Guide, with some people buying hundreds of them at a time. Probably for events.

I love all of these, especially the grenades, hand, and duck bill. I tried to to some MOCs with them using the tecnic axle, but it is actually a tiny bit smaller so it is loose so it can come out easier. Oh also I just finnished my Captain America Civil War trailer 2 recreation https://youtu.be/u0-x8YTr12s

    • admin March 28, 2016, 4:53 PM

Gosh, how long did that take you? It does look good. 🙂

      • TheBrickLot March 28, 2016, 6:20 PM

Um.. I worked on it a bit Monday, none Tuesday, a lot Wednesday, a lot Thursday, a bit Friday, a bit Saturday, and a decent bit Sunday. That’s about 50hrs.

Admin, my dog Truman just died. I am really sad!

    • admin March 29, 2016, 1:37 PM

Gosh, I’m really sorry to hear that… RIP Truman. 🙁

I think that the green separator in Palace Cinema is part of a joke: the set includes stickers of the movie poster “The Brick Separator” , where it appears as a green Godzilla breaking apart the city.
