April 2016 – new sets & promotions

LEGO is continuing their spring promotions with some exciting new sets and special offers for this month. Below we will take a look at the LEGO Store Calendar for April, and see what is worth paying attention to during the month. There are quite a few goodies. 🙂

LEGO Store Calendar April 2016

LEGO SUPER HEROES FREE MINIFIGURE: To complement the recently released #76052 LEGO Super Heroes Batman Classic TV Series – Batcave, LEGO is offering a free exclusive #30603 LEGO Super Heroes Classic Mr. Freeze minifigure polybag with purchases of $75 or more from April 5th to the 15th. Please note that this offer is valid on all orders, not just LEGO Super Heroes, but it would definitely be most interesting to LEGO Super Heroes fans. Especially if you already got, or planning to get the LEGO Super Heroes Batman Classic TV Series – Batcave. You can find it under the LEGO DC Super Heroes section of the Online LEGO Shop.

FREE LEGO ELVES MINI-DOLL SET: From April 25th to May 8th you can get a free #30375 LEGO Elves Sira’s Adventurous Airglider with purchases of $35 or more in the LEGO Friends, LEGO Elves and LEGO Disney Princess categories. This is a sweet little set with a beautifully detailed mini-doll to match the new LEGO Elves dragon sets we reviewed just a few days ago (see link at the end of this post). LEGO IDEAS MAZE SET: The #21305 LEGO Ideas Maze set is now available. This is the latest fan-designed LEGO set that is officially released by LEGO. I have been playing with mine for a few days now and it’s really excellent. Review will come soon. You can find it under the LEGO Ideas section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO ANGRY BIRDS SETS: The brand new LEGO Angry Birds collection is now available with six sets. While the Angry Birds theme may not appeal to everyone, the sets themselves are very fun, with lots of new unique pieces, printed elements, and interesting designs. So it is worth checking them out under the LEGO Angry Birds section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Also, don’t forget about all the new sets released last month in the LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Super Heroes, LEGO Juniors, LEGO Minecraft and LEGO Speed Champions themes. The LEGO Super Heroes Mighty Micros and the LEGO Speed Champions sets are particularly popular with LEGO fans (see reviews at the end of this post). You can find them all under their specific categories, or at the What’s New section of the Online LEGO Shop.

There is also a clearance sale going on at the Online LEGO Shop, so it is worth taking a look before you check out. Many of the LEGO Dimensions packs are 50% off, and there are also some LEGO BIONICLE sets on clearance. Most noteworthy though is that two recently released LEGO Disney Princess sets got a price break; the #41068 LEGO Disney Princess Arendelle Castle Celebration and the #41066 LEGO Disney Princess Anna & Kristoff’s Sleigh Adventure. Both are excellent. You can find them all under the LEGO Sales and Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop.

You already had the Maze? As a lego blogger, do you have “special access” that the common AFOL may not have?:-) Just curious:-)

We do sometimes get some sets from LEGO for early review. Especially the ones LEGO would like to promote, or a particular department within LEGO would like to get feedback on from the community. I actually got the Maze at the beginning of March, but I wanted to wait with my review until my brother’s kids had a chance to try it out (they just visited last week). I like to get different perspectives on a set and test them out on kids. 😉

I need some advice from my fellow LEGO fans and admin. I am stuck between a star wars and a marvel place. Which one has the better deals and why? I can only do one or the other ( I am cutting back on my collections). OH, THE AGONY! Some of the star wars sets are repeats and they look better than the older sets . Marvel sets are a little different but, have the same theme ( Avengers, captain America) What to do ?

This is one of those questions that is hard to answer, but I can totally relate to the dilemma. Here are some things that come to mind. In general Star Wars and Super Heroes have similar prices, so I don’t think there is a significantly better deal either way. SW however has vastly more sets than Marvel. So, if you want to collect sets and minifigures, and don’t want to go completely broke, Marvel is a much better option. You can have all the sets you would like and be happy without breaking the bank. Storage-wise Marvel is a better choice too. You can make a nice display for the minifigs, and also display some of your favorite sets. SW has a disproportionately large number of sets and minifigs, and you would need a mansion to display them all. I’m LEGO will continue with the Marvel line and release other sets besides Avengers and Captain America, but it is unlikely that we will ever be flooded with Super Heroes sets the same way as with Star Wars.

Of course it also depends where your heart is at. If you are into both about the same, then I would go with Marvel. If you like SW more, then focus on the sets that works best for your budget and display space. But in general SW is a bottomless money pit. It takes great discipline and discriminatory power to be a LEGO Star Wars fan on the long term. While I’m a huge SW fan and grew up with the SW story, I promised myself to never get into LEGO Star Wars. It’s a trap… 🙄

Thanks, I decided to get a little of both and don’t get something I already have or, throw in the towel on both and look at the NINJAGO sets because at less the prices are a little bit more reasonable.( I think, maybe)!? Of course I think they are running out of ideas and combined everything that they made in the NINJAGO world ( from what I can tell from the summer wave pictures at the NY toy fair).

    • admin April 1, 2016, 4:39 PM

There is some rumor that the summer sets might be the lest wave of Ninjago before the film comes out, and that’s why the summer sets are so mixed – sort of a grand finale. I don’t know if this is true, but it makes some sense. And, yes, in general Ninjago is a better value with better play-features, because LEGO is not restricted in design and functionality like they are with licensed properties. But your idea of getting a bit of Marvel and Star Wars can also work – I wouldn’t have the discipline for it though. 🙄

Since none of the summer sets contain elements (save the minifigs) from previous seasons, I think there’s a storyline to it. Given there’s another season of episodes. In that case, Yang probably has some special power that unites all the baddies, possibly that weapon he’s got in #70595. Also the symbols on the set boxes match the thing on his back in #70595.
@legostuff71, I would recommend getting more Marvel sets than SW this year, as the SW sets aren’t the best this year, and the Marvel sets are better than usual. Ninjago still beats both in my opinion, though. 🙂

I noticed that all of the sets with villains from previous arcs contained some kind of trans-lime-green weapons relating to them. For example, Chen has a Jade blade in in a lighter shade. I will be interested to see this explained.

          • BLProductions April 1, 2016, 10:08 PM

That’s interesting. My guess is it’s either Yang’s lamp or aeroblade-thing that’s bringing them back and affecting them in some way. Although I can’t understand Chen’s presence, since he went with the Preeminent. Maybe he’s a ghost…. This will indeed be interesting to see explained.
