We had a Volkswagen Beetle just like this when I was growing up, so I’m particularly excited about this set. It even had the same color! I really like the tilted front and back seats, and the opening hood and trunk. And the curves look phenomenal! I would say that this is one of the best sets of the year, and the price is very reasonable too. It will be a perfect addition to the #10220 LEGO Creator Volkswagen T1 Camper Van and the #10242 LEGO Creator MINI Cooper.

Comes with a towel, which is great because, “I would’t want to go anywhere without my wonderful towel.” My parents had a green one back in the 70’s when I was a kiddo, so I remember it vaguely. I was also thinking it would go nicely next to the Mini Cooper which I have sitting on my entertainment center.

      Yep, towels are essential. 😀

I also think that it will look great with the MINI Cooper. I’m not sure how it compares to the VW Camper, but I hope it will be in scale with that one as well.

A towel is the most important item a hitchhiker can carry.

        • admin June 15, 2016, 7:46 PM

          Yep, definitely! 😀

            I get that reference…just saying.

It’s cute but they really just didn’t get the curve of the profile right. I know they worked hard at it and are proud of what they built. They should be but it looks more like a Citroën Deux Chevaux than it does a Beetle. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6f/Deux_chevaux_mg_1748.jpg Why they didn’t call it a Deux Chevaux I don’t understand.

Wow! That’s one sweet looking car! 😀

Naahh, they couldn’t just throw in the towel, as a reference to the earlier post…

Very nice set, and at that price maybe a purchase. Wish they would have put more details into the Porsche 911 like removable top and/or body, more printed brick options (no stickers), couple of racing cones and maybe a spare tire 🙂

    • admin June 15, 2016, 1:15 PM

I agree that a removable body would have been a great addition to the Porsche. Otherwise all that gorgeously sophisticated interior is hard to see! 😀

I like it, although like most large sets I won’t be getting it. The color is a great choice by the designers in my opinion, and it gives us a lot more Medium Azur parts (26, apparently). The towel and extra license plates are a nice addition, although the surfboard isn’t the best. The bodywork isn’t perfect, but that’s to be expected from these models, since it’s impossible to match the shape completely with bricks. They even had to make those new 5X5 curve bricks. It’s also cool that they managed to make the body get wider towards the back. Overall, a pretty good set. 🙂
Speaking of new parts, there are also 2 recolors of the new Mixels rounded teeth, a recolor of the new Shaft W/ Hole (#23443), and a new windshield that was in the LDD update as “Plane Front 2X10X3”. These add to my count, for a total of 113 new pieces this year. Quite a lot, and I haven’t finished yet. 😐

    • admin June 15, 2016, 7:49 PM

That’s an insane number of new parts, and we are just half way through the year! As far as Beetle and other similar size LEGO Creator sets, I think the Cooper is the one that looks most natural with currently available LEGO elements. Still, LEGO did a great job on the Beetle. It actually looks better on the video than on pictures as the elements are not so sharply defined.

      • BLProductions June 15, 2016, 10:16 PM

Actually, that number includes at least 4 parts that appear in sets that haven’t been released yet, so it could be assumed the total for the whole year. However, there could be more new parts on sets we haven’t seen yet (Rogue One, WV Train, etc.). Still, yes, it’s a lot. 😕
I agree, the Mini Cooper is very accurate. It’s not perfect, but very close. Also, I forgot to mention this before, but according to various sources on Brickset, the Beetle is not fully in-scale with the T1 Camper. The length and wheelbase are right, but either the Beetle is too wide or the Camper too thin. Not a big issue though. However, neither of those are in scale with the Mini or Ferrari.

        • admin June 15, 2016, 10:51 PM

Yeah, I remember reading that as well as far as the scale of the Camper and the Beetle. I have the Camper already, and definitely plan to get the Beetle as well. Really like both, and since they are display pieces, it doesn’t really matter to me if they don’t fully match.

  • Strider June 16, 2016, 2:46 PM

I can’t decide which I like better, this or the Mini Cooper. The summery aspect is nice.

    • admin June 16, 2016, 3:17 PM

They are both great sets. I think the MINI Cooper is really excellent both inside and outside. Because the vehicles is a bit more boxy, it is a good fit for LEGO. The Beetle is a lot more curvy, and it is obvious that LEGO designers had to work really hard to get it as close to the real vehicle as possible. It is not as natural fit for LEGO as the Cooper. Still, I plan to get the Beetle instead of the Cooper, because it means more to me. So I think it just gets down to personal taste which one you end up choosing. 🙂

      • Strider June 17, 2016, 12:31 PM

Yeah, the Mini Cooper is definitely a more natural fit for limitations with the Lego system. One things for sure, I like both Volkswagons and the Mini Cooper better than the Ferrari, there character and look seems to fit with them as a Lego set.

        • admin June 17, 2016, 12:33 PM

The Ferrari is actually pretty cool too. It does look nice. But in my opinion it’s a bit boring compared to the others. But Ferraris don’t interest me in real life either. I like rugged cars or cute cars. 🙄
