The set looks great, and follows the trend of smaller, more interesting modulars. It will fit well with the Detective’s Office and the Bank. I can’t help but feel however that the 10th year anniversary set should have been more grandiose. I was expecting something bigger.

I’m not convinced about the colors and textures of the sand blue building. I think it would have looked better with masonry bricks instead of those ridged ones that make the walls look like industrial doors. The sand green building in the middle is nice, but I feel that those excavator buckets may be a bit forced. I can see gaps at the sides.

My favorite is the building with the tower. It is simple, but has a nice design and great colors. But I’m not sure I like the garage doors over the windows. It is difficult to see through them. It may have worked well for a gun shop or pawn shop where the windows have bars, but a bakery should have clear windows so people can see through.

Really like the small details all around. The mini modulars, the train, all the sweets in the bakery, some of the building decorations. It is a great set for sure, I was just expecting something different for the anniversary.

Also, I wish the set could be split like the Pet Shop so it can be placed in different ways in a layout. The gap is already there between the buildings. Why not just place the smaller baseplate on the left instead of the right?

    • admin October 17, 2016, 2:27 PM

I think a lot of the expectation had to do with speculations. Once the name was known (Assembly Square), people were expecting skyscrapers and parks, and construction sites, re-release of the first modulars, or the combination of them all.

The trend is clearly towards smaller modulars – as you mention – and this set is a great fit with those. We will probably never see large single buildings like the first modulars up to the Town Hall. It is interesting though how they broke the size of the footprint with something odd. This means that people who have been arranging the modulars in a square city block will have to buy an additional Pet Shop to fit in another half a building to complete the square.

There are some minor details on each building that I don’t like either, but I think those are going to be easy to change. I am definitely concerned about those gaps at the sides of the excavator buckets. Will have to see if they are as visible in person as on the picture. May have to build a more traditional roof to replace them.

Just buy two Assembly Squares to solve your odd Mod prob. Easy squeezy!

        • admin October 18, 2016, 9:35 PM

LOL! Okay, there is the right answer! 😀

  • Professor Bunny October 17, 2016, 2:15 PM

First off, I’d like to say, this set looks amazing. But that goes without saying. I really like all the miniature LEGO sets inside it. I also like the train set. My brother thinks the train is the Horizon Express, and I agree. All of the many new pieces look useful, particularly the SNOT brick.
The thing I DON’T like is that it is 32×48. To me, this makes it almost not modular. I just don’t feel that it really fits with the 32×32 modular buildings. I wish they had either kept it to the standard size, or (even better) made it the full 64 studs so that it would take up the space of two modulars. I hope that at least LEGO will release a 16×32 one to restore order.
    Overall, a great set IMO.

    • admin October 17, 2016, 2:29 PM

Yeah, the choice of a larger footprint is a bit odd. If they would have made the left building slightly narrower they could have fit it on the smaller baseplate so the whole layout can split to 32×32 and 16×32.

      • Håkan October 17, 2016, 4:15 PM

Hmmm, perhaps you could fill up the empty space with some Creator modulars, or Moc something?…

But maybe the Creator modulars aren’t properly sized, so it would require some rebuilding or tweaking…

        • admin October 17, 2016, 5:33 PM

Yeah, sure, that would work too. But the easiest would be just slipping in a half a Pet Shop. 😉

          • Håkan October 17, 2016, 6:52 PM

Like, you take a big axe and slice it in half?

            • admin October 17, 2016, 7:34 PM

LOL, no! The Pet Shop is made of two buildings, each on 16×32 baseplates, and one of those could easily even out the Assembly Square. 😉

    • Richard Jones October 18, 2016, 3:52 AM

I wonder if the train is the LEGO Factory 10183 Hobby Trains, released around the same time as Cafe Corner, and the Eiffel Tower (10181) – released the same day. As was the 10179 Millennium Falcon

      • admin October 18, 2016, 9:59 AM

        Interesting! Very well could be!

  • BLProductions October 17, 2016, 10:06 PM

Well, there is a LOT of detail on this, and I think it looks spectacular, albeit a bit crowded (or at least more crowded than the previous three Modulars). There are so many neat techniques, I cannot begin to point out the most notable. But all the references to old Modulars included is very interesting, and a nice inclusion. The middle building actually looks a lot like the Parisian Restaurant (with a Brick-Bank-style ground floor).
Another cool part of this set is, of course, the parts. The new ones even got an article on Brickset: http://brickset.com/article/24035/10255-assembly-square-new-parts-galore The new tiles are interesting, and the facet-tiles will go well with the Nexo Knights shields, but I really like the new SNOT brick. I can’t recall how many times I’ve needed a 1X1 brick with 2 adjacent studs (but not 4), so I’ll be looking for those in more 2017 sets. 🙂
The set’s size is interesting, and I was thinking the same as jabber-baby-wocky, in that the baseplates could be arranged to split. However I see that the tiling outside the entrance to the left building is not splittable at 16 studs, requiring a design change. The alley is the same: there is no way to connect the buildings together in Modular style, so the buildings would need to redesigning. It could have been done, though. Maybe next year will be a half-Modular, although that might look odd. 😕
That’s my thoughts on this set, hopefully it’s not too long. 😉

    • admin October 17, 2016, 10:30 PM

Oh, yes! That new SNOT brick is so awesome! I actually sawed off the extra studs from some SNOT bricks with four studs to get the same result because I needed them so many times. 🙄

I have been thinking about the possibility of splitting the buildings myself. But the first building seems to be taking up 18 studs, so I don’t think it would work. There are other changes I’m planning on doing, but this set is so complex, I have to really see it in person to see what to do. Definitely an exciting set! 😀

  • rainey October 18, 2016, 10:02 AM

Yeeowsers! That’s a whole lot of Lego there and a commensurate price.

I think it’s awesome and the new modular has become a traditional Second Christmas present for my son so I guess I’d better start saving up. Now if only I hadn’t blown all those VIP points on the WV train….

LOVE it! Most especially all the nods to previous modulars and the vivid sense of life going on in the interiors. The only thing I’d change is to make that little alley a bit wider but I suppose that’s an easy fix if builders cared to do it.

    • rainey October 18, 2016, 4:28 PM

After sitting with it for a while I have to say I don’t really like the roll-up door sections used vertically. It’s a clever idea, I think, but it’s not attractive or suitable in this case and it diminishes the effect of the adorable wedding cake on display.

I think that application would have been better used in a more modern building that was, for example, offices where a balance between light and privacy rather than display was the objective.

But that’s small potatoes. In general, I think it looks super!

      • admin October 18, 2016, 4:53 PM

You are the second person who mentioned that about the windows, and I agree. They may look better in person, but we will have to see. I’m already thinking of ways to change that section to more appropriate windows. LEGO has this really nice bay window piece used in shops and restaurants that might work better for the large window. And the smaller one could be just replaced with a regular window piece. At least that’s what I’m thinking.

  • Judith October 18, 2016, 12:28 PM

Great, can’t wait! Though it would have been good to have early VIP access, so that I could buy this as a Christmas Present to myself lol. Very pleased that the cost is £169.99. I had visions of this set being more expensive.

I agree, that it would be better if the modular split similar to the Pet Shop.

Have I missed seeing something? Why are some people making comments about a train?

    • rainey October 18, 2016, 12:32 PM

I know! Isn’t it maddening that you can’t get this for Christmas?! It’s such a natural, I wonder why they save it for January every year.

      • admin October 18, 2016, 1:30 PM

Because they want you to buy the current sets, then keep shopping in January. 😉

        • rainey October 18, 2016, 3:15 PM

Like true Lego people can go a month without something new….

          😜

          • admin October 18, 2016, 3:47 PM

            Ahem… guilty as charged… 🙄

    • admin October 18, 2016, 1:29 PM

They are referring to the tiny train layout in the upstairs apartment. 😉

  • Tom October 18, 2016, 2:27 PM

Much as this is lovely, I really hope they release the next wave of mini modulars. I don’t/won’t pay the stupid prices for the older modulars and also don’t have the space so the minis are perfect for me. I ended up buying 3 copies as they are also amazing parts packs.

Having said I won’t pay for the cafe corner, I have just started bricklinking a Taj (with sensible substitutions)

    • Mav.weirdo October 18, 2016, 3:03 PM

I get the impression that this new set is aimed at people who haven’t been able to get the older sets. That would be part of the reason they include so many references to the others.

      • admin October 18, 2016, 3:47 PM

        Very well could be.

        • Tom October 19, 2016, 6:47 AM

Oh highly likely, especially as its the 10 year anniversary. As noted know I don’t “need” them all, but I tend to get complete series where possible (with a few exceptions such as region specifics etc)…

          • admin October 19, 2016, 11:41 AM

I don’t know if this helps, but the first modulars are actually not that great compared to the more recent ones. Of course this is my opinion, and not everyone will agree with me, but they are basically empty inside, and I think they are also too big. I quite like the smaller, more detailed modulars of recent years. You could also consider the 10 year anniversary set as a legitimate new starting point. 😉

    • admin October 18, 2016, 3:52 PM

Tom, if you are referring to the micro versions of the modulars, that set didn’t sell well, so it is unlikely we will ever see a set like that again. If you are referring to the smaller LEGO Creator buildings that LEGO refers to as the little brothers of the modulars, yes, we will see more of them.

BTW, there is absolutely no need to get all the modulars. Personally I don’t like all of them and only bought the ones I really enjoy. I found that two or three modulars are perfectly enough for a complete display, and of course you can add more if you like. And even one can look just fine by itself. So yeah, no need to get into the “collect them all” mindset. There is really no reason for it.

      • Tom October 19, 2016, 3:26 AM

Yup I meant the Micro modulars. I found them absolutely brilliant and very enjoyable although I didn’t know they didn’t sell well.

With regards to the full modulars the only one I have is the grand emporium which although a fun build and lovely display piece I more picked up as it was cheap. I do have the completist mentality which is the reason I’ve tried to avoid the modulars as I really will end up having to get them all…

        • admin October 19, 2016, 11:39 AM

I do remember seeing some people continuing the micro versions of the modulars, so if you are inclined to collect those, I’m sure some plans are available online.

          • Mav.Weirdo October 19, 2016, 12:52 PM

On the Lego Ideas site there is a fan designed version, with links to directions in the updates.

Thanks for mentioning that! Sweet! 🙂

            • Tom October 19, 2016, 4:22 PM

Wow thank you for digging the link out – that is absolutely perfect and they shall be built very very soon to add 🙂

  • Legostuff71 October 18, 2016, 8:21 PM

WOW. That’s all I can say. So, the modular sets that are out now, which one are in the. ” must have ” list? The only one I have is the Detective office . What would go great with that ?

    • admin October 18, 2016, 9:45 PM

The Detective’s Office will go really well with the Assembly Square as it has a very similar style. From the currently available sets, the oldest is the Pet Shop, and there are already speculations that it will get retired when the Assembly Square gets released. This is actually a pretty likely scenario, as the Pet Shop is the longest standing modular to date (first released in 2011). In my own layout I have the Pet Shop right next to the Detective’s Office, and it looks really good. One of the reasons the Pet Shop is so popular is because it is made up of two buildings that you can separate and put in your layout any way you want. It is the most versatile of all of the modulars.

If you don’t care for the Pet Shop, the second oldest set is the Palace Cinema, which will likely to retire soon as well. If you don’t care for that either, the Brick Bank also goes very well with the Detective’s Office. But my personal favorite is the Parisian Restaurant. It really is a beautiful set that is a pleasure to build and look at.

You might what to watch some review on YouTube, and also check out people’s setups to see which configuration you like the best. They really all fit nicely together, so it really just depends on your personal taste and preferences. 🙂

  • Legostuff71 October 18, 2016, 10:48 PM

Thanks. I was thinking of the Parisian restaurant . But I heard that it’s hard to move the mini figs around on the lower level ( you need small hands/ fingers).

    • admin October 18, 2016, 10:55 PM

Hm… I haven’t had a problem with the lower floor of the Parisian. It is very open, as there is no wall between the kitchen and the dining area. It is actually easier than moving around your hands in the Detective’s Office, which is split into three separate sections. The one that I have the most trouble with is the Fire Brigade, as the first floor has such tall walls.

  • jjava October 19, 2016, 2:09 PM

Once again, Jamie did not disappoint me. Very surprised by the price. Not complaining. Will definitely be ordering as soon as it is available.

    • admin October 19, 2016, 3:40 PM

Yeah, me too! Getting it as soon as it is available. Love Jamie, love the set, and love the price! 😀

  • greysqrl October 19, 2016, 4:04 PM

Love, love, love, love, love! Very much looking forward to picking this up and the price is very good as well. We’ve finally got double VIP points in the UK so I’ve managed to catch up by buying The Brick Bank and Detective’s Office. Never managed to get the original ones but they are the most amazing pieces of Lego workmanship!

    • admin October 19, 2016, 4:59 PM

Those three are going to look excellent together! 😀

  • Brick Dude October 21, 2016, 2:09 PM

Definitely going to pick this one up. All the little details are amazing- i.e. the dentist’s office, the flower shop with the trans green bricks, the roof top grill could go on and on. As far as the footprint of the set- I can see where some have an issue but look- most towns/cities are not laid out into perfect blocks and this could potentially add an element of realism to a layout. Arguably. lol. Not crazy about the color schemes, the middle buildings fine but the other two especially the blue seems somewhat basic/”childish” and reminds me of the micros. In comparison, the color scheme of the Detective’s Office fit a city theme much better.

The other gripe I have has more to do with the decision of what not to include and I am hesitant to even mention. It’s more of a whine than anything else. A lot of people and collectors missed out on the Green Grocer and, as we all know, the demand for it on the secondary market is high along with the two types of sand green bricks necessary to duplicate it. Would have been really cool to have included at least some of these elements in this set (for the middle building in particular).

    • admin October 21, 2016, 5:22 PM

Good point about the Green Grocer. Yeah, including those highly priced pieces would have been great. I don’t think anyone really has an issue with the footprint being odd from the perspective of how it looks. Most of the recent modulars are not 32 studs wide, so there is already a good variety of different width buildings. The issue is for those who have been laying out the modulars in a rectangle. Putting the Assembly Square on one side will leave a gap on the opposite side of the rectangle. The only way to fix this is to fill that gap with a 16 stud wide building – either your own design, or half of the Pet Shop.

  • Lego Girl November 1, 2016, 6:13 PM

Maybe not my preferred set ever, but it’s wonderful and day one purchase for me!
