What would you like on the LEGO PAB Wall?

You may remember our discussions about the LEGO Pick & Build Wall (formerly Pick-A-Brick Wall) changes at LEGO brand stores (see links at the end of this post). While some of the new features already made their way to European locations, others were only implemented in North America on a trial basis. One of these trial features for the PAB Wall was the Fan Favorite section, which includes LEGO elements that are considered popular with adult LEGO fans. 🙂

LEGO Pick-A-Brick Wall Selection

First, the Fan Favorite section of the PAB Wall was only introduced in a few stores, however since it was received so enthusiastically, it was later implemented in all locations across North America, and was taken out of the initial pilot phase to become a regular feature. Based on feedback by LEGO fans and sales performance data, LEGO elements that will be included in the Fan Favorite section of the PAB Wall in 2017 have been selected already.

However, LEGO would like to get feedback from the community in regards to the 2018 Fan Favorite section, so they created a survey for LEGO Ambassadors to fill out on behalf of their communities. LEGO encourages all LEGO fans to participate and share their thoughts about the program, even if you don’t directly benefit from it at this point (i.e. you don’t live close to a LEGO store, or you live in a country where LEGO stores haven’t implemented the new features yet). Although there is no specific timeframe for a rollout across Europe and Asia at this point, LEGO is exploring the possibilities, so hopefully it will be available globally soon.

lego-color-palette-2016

Below I have enclosed the questions that I will need to answer on behalf of our readers and subscribers. If you would like to see the current LEGO color palette, you can refer to the chart above (see larger a version of the image on Brickset). The element list is available at the following link (please note that this is a large Excel file that may take a few minutes to open): 2017 LEGO ELEMENT LIST

  1. Which colors would you like to see on the Pick & Build Wall in the future? Please provide the LEGO color ID numbers found on the LEGO color palette (allow a maximum of 20 numbers).
  2. What LEGO element shapes would you like to see on the Pick & Build Wall in the future? Please provide the LEGO Design ID found in the LEGO element list (allow a maximum of 30 numbers).
  3. On a scale of 1 – 10, how likely are you to recommend the Fan Favorite selection on the PAB Wall to others? (1 being the least likely and 10 being the most.)
  4. On a scale of 1 – 10, how likely are you to recommend the Pick & Build Wall within LEGO brand stores to others? (1 being the least likely and 10 being the most.)
  5. Do you have any ideas, suggestions or feedback regarding the PAB Wall within LEGO brand stores?
  6. Do you have any ideas, suggestions or feedback regarding LEGO brand retail stores in general?

The deadline for me to fill out the survey is January 13, so please finalize your feedback a couple of days before that date, leaving me enough time to gather all the data before submitting it. You are welcome to share your feedback all at once, or just answer one question at a time. This is a great opportunity for all of us to tell LEGO what we would like to see on the PAB Wall, so take advantage of it. 😉

    Hey Admin,

I like to build structures, trains, and landscapes. As such, I would like to see standard bricks in a variety of sizes (1×1, 1×2, 1×4, etc.). It would be extremely helpful to have a variety of these brick sizes on the wall at the same time. As in any official Lego set with substantial size (modulars, for example), you need a variety of sizes for each of the primary colors used on the building.

I also think earth tones would be really nice, and are generally rare and expensive to buy via third parties (Bricklink, etc.).

    So these are the colors I would like to see: 151, 135, 38, 140, 141, 308.
I couldn’t get the Excel file to open. But as I said previously, standard 1x… bricks would be most useful.

I can’t emphasize enough how useful it would be to have multiple brick sizes of the same color at one time.

    • admin December 22, 2016, 11:54 AM

James, thanks for sharing. I will make sure to include your response, as it is a very good suggestion. Yeah, that Excel file is a pain to open. It took me a couple of tries and several minutes also. But once it downloads, you can save it for future reference. It is quite useful. 🙂

  • rainey December 22, 2016, 11:12 AM

    A) THANK YOU SO MUCH for incorporating our ideas in your response.

    B) I’m delighted if Lego wants to take a less random approach to what shows up in the PaB wall.

    C) I’ve downloaded the Elements List to come up with a more comprehensive response. How wonderful to have it as a reference. It should make using Lego’s clunky S@H Pick a Brick page so much easier!

More to come. Probably after the Christmas.

    • admin December 22, 2016, 11:53 AM

Thanks for participating in this! The more accurate info we can give to LEGO about what we want, the better they can respond. Sure, after the holidays is totally fine. It is the second week of January when I have to complete the survey on the behalf of all of you. 🙂

  • Corey December 22, 2016, 12:36 PM

    1) 140, 154, 141, 38, and anything trans
    2) I’ll take anything (bricks, plates, slopes, random weird pieces) in any of the colors above
    3) Depends on the colors. But since fans are voting, ideally we will see rarer colors of all varieties, so I’d say a 9
    4) Again, depends on pieces and colors. 8
    5) Get rid of the pick a model. It just wastes valuable space. Stick a poster up next to the wall of suggested models and give every wall back the 4-6 slots it loses to the cup holder and display sections.
    6) Not at this time.

    • Corey December 22, 2016, 12:40 PM

Edit for clarification: #5 should say “Stick a poster of suggested models up on the actual store wall (or hand out cards with PaM ideas) next to the PaB spots and then you can give the PaB wall back the 4-6 slots it loses to the cup holders and display sections of the PaM stuff.

      • admin December 22, 2016, 1:38 PM

Corey, yes, that’s clear. And a good idea. Thanks for sharing.

  • PrashBricks December 22, 2016, 12:39 PM

    1. 191, 330, 268, 154, 111, 151, 312, 138, 38, 308, 316, 141, 106 (and sand red, where it might be)
    2.1x… bricks, tiles
    3.8
    4.9
    5.No
    6.Sand Red

  • Will December 22, 2016, 1:49 PM

Having animals like cow and bear on the PAB Wall would be great.

    • admin December 22, 2016, 2:10 PM

Oh, yes! Animals! Recently they had some horses, so it doesn’t seem like an impossible request. Would love to get some cows and bears! 😀

      • Håkan December 22, 2016, 3:38 PM

And goats! (If they still make them…)

I managed to pick up a bunch of horses once in Copenhagen, though…

        • admin December 22, 2016, 8:07 PM

Oh, yes, yes!!! Goats!!! I love those! I have four, and they are some of my favorite animals. I would also love to get some standard LEGO sheep (not the Friends cutie one). Every castle needs a herd of sheep around it! 🙂

          • Håkan December 23, 2016, 6:41 AM

I’ve got a Friends cutie sheep from a thrift store find. Still better than nothing!

Too bad the Farm line was cancelled.

  • Dave December 22, 2016, 2:51 PM

1 & 2. I don’t particularly care which elements or which colors are provided on the P&B Wall. I would like to see a greater variety. Change all elements every month.
    3. I haven’t visited a Lego store that has implemented the new Fan Favorite.
    4. My response largely depends on what Lego does with the P&B Wall. Currently there is greater variety at greater value in sites such as Brinklink.
    5. I haven’t visited a Lego store that has implemented the new Fan Favorite.

    • rainey December 22, 2016, 5:06 PM

My store in Los Angeles hasn’t either.

      • admin December 22, 2016, 8:08 PM

Really? I thought they should have been in every store by now in the US. At least that’s the impression I got on the Ambassador Forum.

  • BLProductions December 22, 2016, 2:52 PM

Pick & Build? Meh, I’ll always call it Pick A Brick. 🙂 I’ve never seen the Fan Favorite section in my store, but the store is practically a closet, and the PAB wall there is usually poor, so I’m not surprised. The Disney World LEGO Store probably has it when I visited recently, but I didn’t notice. I’ll answer the questions anyways, though, in case this does reach my store.
    1. Off the top of my head, 26, 154, 5, and 194. But I’d like to see some of 140, 141, 38, 199, 315, 297, 316, 138, 191, and maybe 330 and 151 as well.
    2. I’m not going to download the Excel file, as I’m afraid what my computer will do. But I do want Black, Dark Red, Tan, and Grey (Dark and Light) of Designs 3005, 3004, 3622, 3010, 3009, & 3008 (if possible). I’d like the following plates in those colors as well: 3024, 3023, 3020, 3623, 3666, 3710, and 3031. Really I’ll take 3024 in any non-transparent color. Other designs I’d like include 99780, 3700, 63864, 18651, 15100, 18677, 18674, 22961, 24201, & 26047. Hopefully all those are on the element list.
    3. As mentioned, I haven’t really seen the section before, so I can’t say how I like it myself. If it has the parts I listed above, I’d say 10. Otherwise, 5.
    4. Assuming they like to build, and the Wall has good parts on it, 10.
    5. Change the Pick-a-Model setup. I find the models often have the best parts on the Wall, so the PaM selection should be integrated with the rest of PAB, so we can get those parts without having to spend extra on a PaM.
    6. No more closet stores: there’s not enough room in them for all the sets.
There, I’m done. Hopefully that’s not too much, admin, and you can get some of it into your response. 🙂
BTW, when the file says “2017 LEGO Element List,” does it include new 2017 parts? Or is it just what’s going to be on PAB in 2017? 😕

    • admin December 22, 2016, 8:05 PM

Good suggestions! As far as your question about the Element List, it is the same as what’s available for LUGs in 2017. So they are not all the new elements, just what LEGO can provide in bulk.

      • BLProductions December 23, 2016, 12:26 PM

Ok, good to know. I’ll be waiting until the 1st then for the new 2017 parts. 🙂 Sadly, I expect some of the parts I asked for above won’t be available in bulk, since Technic parts usually aren’t in quantity enough for bulk. 😕
Also, did you see that LEGO Shop US has 87 new sets listed for January 1st? Plus Adventure Time will be out on the 26th. I note the absence of Star Wars and Technic sets… does this mean the US won’t get them until February or March, with the Minecraft and Speed Champions sets?

        • admin December 23, 2016, 12:33 PM

Yes, I saw the new sets too. As far as SW, I’m not sure. They are already available in the UK, so I don’t know why they would delay them in the US for 2-3 months. I did however have consistently seen that sometimes new sets in a particular theme doesn’t show up until the first of the month, even though I every other theme it does. So I wouldn’t worry about the SW sets just yet. 🙂

  • OhioBricker December 22, 2016, 7:41 PM

Would love to have more tiles, especially 2×2 tiles. Ideally light or dark gray, but would be grateful for any tiles in earth tone colors. The only tiles I’ve seen in my LEGO Store (Columbus) in the past year and a half have been: red, orange, pink, and purple.
I would also take just about any white brick (1×1, 1×2, 1×3, 1×4, 1×6, etc.).
It wouldn’t bother me if I never saw another 2×4 brick in the P&B Wall ever again (although I realize that’s pipe dream).

  • Katra December 22, 2016, 10:15 PM

    1. 140, 141, 151, 330, 135, 154, 40,42, 111

    2. Tiles in trans light blue, trans brown, and trans clear. 1X and 2X bricks. (Particularly would like to see more 1X8 and up.)

    3. 10 (Hey; I got sand green on the pick a brick wall. Even if it was just 1×1 bricks and 1×2 plates.)

    4. Lose the pick a model. First round had a couple useful parts I was able to snag, since it’s a total waste of space.

    5. Lose pick a model and put the cups back on the counter to restore the full complement of bins.

    6. Would love more space for pick a brick. That’s most of what I go to the Lego Store for.

  • Nixx December 23, 2016, 9:12 AM

    1. I’d love to see more of the “sand” colors (135 138 151) and “earth” colors too (140 141)

    2. For the parts i d’like to find : Angled slopes like http://brickset.com/parts/design-3685 in different heights. Colored doors and window frames ( not always the white ones)

    3. 10 if Lego do put interesting stuff in it.

    4. 1

    5. Have a website that tells wich brick are available to pick on a per store basis with an “upcoming” category. Maybe with the ablity to vote for the next batch.

    6. Get help for collectible minifig bag feeling from the store. (they used to do it but stopped due to complaints)

    • admin December 23, 2016, 11:46 AM

Nixx, thanks for sharing. I particularly like your idea of a website to update what’s on the PAB Wall. It would be so useful!

      • Håkan December 23, 2016, 1:14 PM

There are some sites with inventory listings, although they might often be outdated…

        http://www.brickbuildr.com/index.php/all-stores/

        • admin December 23, 2016, 1:16 PM

Yes, and I have wrote about both of them previously, but they completely rely on users updating the walls themselves, so for most locations they are horribly outdated.

  • BrickCurve December 23, 2016, 11:18 PM

Any Pick a Brick would be a start for me! They are apparently opening a store as part of Disneyland here at some point in the next few years, but whether it has PAB remains to be seen!

Some elements I would particularly love to have are 1 x 1 round plates in trans blue, light blue and clear, as well as 1 x 1 and 1 x 2 slopes in various colours. It’s nice to dream!

  • Nicole Gent December 31, 2016, 1:56 AM

My city doesn’t have a Lego store. So when I know I am going to a city that has one I get super excited and then often disappointed. As I build mostly buildings and landscapes I am always in huge need of bricks in the following sizes: 1×1, 1×2, 1×4, 1×6 and up. I’d also love to see more tiles in colors I need, especially light and dark grey.

    These are the colors I would like to see:1, 151, 135, 38, 140, 141, 308..

Regarding suggestions, it would be nice to easily see what the store has in stock even if it was updated only weekly or something. I have friends that travel more often then I do. They are not Lego people but they would be willing to pick up pieces but it’s too hard to tell them when I don’t know what the store has. I will call the store and ask for pictures but they are often to fuzzy to really know what pieces are there or they are too busy to send pics. It makes being part of a LUG difficult as I need large amounts to create the structure/scene for events.

I also second the suggestion of having different colored windows. Sand green would be awesome.

    Thanks for considering our suggestions!

    • admin December 31, 2016, 11:57 AM

Thanks for sharing. Good suggestions. I will make sure to incorporate them in our report.

  • Dan January 2, 2017, 8:25 PM

Thank you very much for soliciting our input for feedback to Lego.

    1. Preferred Colors
    All transparent colors like: 44,182, 143, 43, 40, 111,
    151, 323, 135, 140, 154, 322, 321

    2 Preferred elements:

    30136
    98283
    2357
    30137

    3. Don’t know as the 3 Lego stores I visit do not have a Fan-Favorite section (Rockefeller Center, Flatiron, Yonkers Legoland)

    4. Grade 4 – very limited selection and it is updated very rarely

    5. Suggestion PAB wall: definitely expand selection and number of elements carried, and change the selection more frequently (e.g. monthly)

    6. Lego stores around me generally are a bit cramped, but have a good selection of sets, though limited PAB selection. I would suggest, however, that Lego stores not be allowed to charge prices higher than Lego’s published prices. The 2 closest stores (Rockefeller center & Flatiron), both charge 10% above regular prices for most of the sets. As a result, I never purchase sets there.

  • Mav.weirdo January 3, 2017, 9:59 PM

    1. Which colors would you like to see on the Pick & Build Wall in the future?
In order of priority, I would like to see the nougats: 312, 18, 283; the “tans”: 5, 138; as well as some of the darker hues 38, 154, 140, 141, 308. I would rather a variety of shapes for 1 or 2 of these colors, than to have a single shape of each.

    2. What LEGO element shapes would you like to see on the Pick & Build Wall in the future?
Tiles: FLAT TILE 2X2 (3068), FLAT TILE 1X2 (3069), FLAT TILE 1X4 (2431), FLAT TILE 1X1 (3070) preferably in white, gray or black, but any of the colors from question 1 would be good also.
    Bricks: MASONRY PROFILE BRICK 1X2 (98283), PROFILE BRICK 1X2 (2877), PALISADE BRICK 1X2 (30136)
    or a selection of 1x bricks: BRICK 1X4 (3010), BRICK 1X3 (3622), BRICK 1X2 (3004), BRICK 1X1 (3005) in any single color listed in question 1
Teeth (decorative elements): 15070, 15208, 15209, 49668 preferably in white, gray or black but definitely not orange

    3. On a scale of 1 – 10, how likely are you to recommend the Fan Favorite selection on the PAB Wall to others?
If they would keep it in stock – 10

    4. On a scale of 1 – 10, how likely are you to recommend the Pick & Build Wall within LEGO brand stores to others?
If they would keep it in stock – 10

    5. I actually am ok with the “pick a model” because it makes the stores change what is on the brick wall every 3 months(ish) and encourages them to include shapes good for microbuilds.

However they seriously need to fix their supply chain, I am getting frustrated with going into Lego stores to find the pick a brick wall sold out of key pieces and being told that the store has little control of when they will be back in. Stores should be able to reorder pieces when they are running low, and get their reorders in a timely fashion. An empty bin on the pick a brick wall is lost revenue.

I also hate the “display only” bins at the top of the pick a brick wall. Bins full of bricks that you aren’t allowed to sell make no sense.

    6. I have been in 10 different Lego stores in the past 3 years, and there does not seem to be much consistency across the company. Some stores do a great job of maintaining inventory and helping customers, while others don’t.

  • Brian January 4, 2017, 9:53 AM

    Tile pieces 1×4 , 1×8. Gray sloped 18, 45, 60 pieces for mountain building

  • James K January 11, 2017, 9:52 PM

Transparent Light Blue (42) Round 1×1 Plates (4163917)

PAB definitely needs to refresh the selection more often. Only thing that seems to change are the PAB build set items. I was told the stores had refreshed so I spend a Sat driving to the 5 DC area stores and bumpkiss.

PAB is really hit or miss in the DC area. Don’t bother calling to see if a particular brick is on the PAB, and don’t if they have it in the back.

That said the LEGO Store just south of Hartford CT had amazing customer service. They had a 48 x 48 baseplate with one of every brick on the PAB and in the store room so you knew exactly what they had in inventory.

    • Mav.Weirdo January 12, 2017, 11:44 PM

The Potomac Mills store in Woodbridge, VA also does the baseplate showing all the bricks they have in stock. While they claim the p-a-b changes “quarterly” it is not always the first day of the quarter. It is best to call ahead. I have found that they will say if the new P-A-model is up. We were told that the new model was being put up Tuesday January 10th, but haven’t been by a store yet to confirm.

  • admin January 12, 2017, 10:04 PM

UPDATE: I have gathered all of your feedback and filled out the survey on the Ambassador Forum just now. I had to cut down on the number of colors and elements somewhat, because there were a limited number of slots in the survey (I think it was 30 for each). So I have looked through your suggestions carefully to make sure I include the colors and elements that were mentioned the most. The last two questions were open ended with no space limit, so I was able to include all of your suggestions there. Hope this will help LEGO prepare for the PAB-Wall in coming years! Thank you all for participating. 🙂
