Interesting tidbits in LEGO Club Magazine

There are a couple of interesting details in the January-February issue of the LEGO Club Magazine that I wanted to bring to your attention. As this is the first issue of the year, most of the focus is on the new sets and themes. So, there are comics and games related to the new LEGO Nexo Knights, LEGO Ninjago, The LEGO Batman Movie, LEGO DC Super Hero Girls, LEGO Disney Princess Moana, LEGO Star Wars, LEGO City, LEGO Creator and LEGO Friends sets, but there is more! 🙂

LEGO Club Magazine January 2017 1

In the middle of the magazine there is a great looking 2-page, 2-sided poster of Doctor Strange from the Marvel Super Heroes universe on one side, and a LEGO City Undercover scene with Chase McCane on the other side (the game is going to be resurrected sometime this spring). The poster does have staple holes and a crease in the middle, but if you take it out carefully, there should be minimal damage. You should also be able to download the poster once the digital version of the magazine is available. I don’t have a large enough scanner to show you the whole thing, but the scan below should give you an idea of one side of the poster.

At The LEGO Batman Movie website there is a section which encourages LEGO fans to “Build Something BATMAN!” with gray and black LEGO pieces. In reference to this part of the website, the LEGO Club Magazine includes a picture of Batman’s version of The Joker’s Notorious Lowrider. It is basically a mash-up of the design of the #70905 LEGO Batman Movie Batmobile and the #70906 LEGO Batman Movie The Joker’s Notorious Lowrider, and looks really good in my opinion. If you would like to build this vehicle, it shouldn’t be that difficult, at it basically just swaps out the purple pieces for black ones, and borrows the windshield and the wheels from the Batmobile.

Towards the back of the magazine there is a sneak-peek of the upcoming LEGO Elves sets with goblins! I’m really looking forward to this collection as the sets are fantastic. As far as I know, they should be available in the spring. So excited!

There are also a couple of pages about the new LEGO Friends sets, which includes some very interesting information. First of all there is a call to action to “Be a LEGO Designer and Win!” The details are as follows: “Build a place in Hearlake City where you would like to hang out with your Best Friends! If you win the contest, you will be invited to spend a week in Denmark – wit your family – to help the designers to make your idea into an actual LEGO set. You can even make yourself as a mini-doll!” This is a very generous offer from LEGO, and an incredible opportunity for young LEGO fans (the contest is open for kids between ages of 6 and 12), so if you have any ideas for a future LEGO Friends set, go for it! The deadline to enter is February 28th. More info at LEGO.com/FriendsDesigner.

Speaking of future LEGO Friends sets, on the same page there is puzzle with a Heartlake City map. The map includes some of the locations of Heartlake City – most of which are already official LEGO sets. Like the #41005 LEGO Friends Heartlake High, the #41035 LEGO Friends Heartlake Juice Bar, the #41058 LEGO Friends Heartlake Shopping Mall, the #41085 LEGO Friends Vet Clinic, the #41093 LEGO Friends Heartlake Hair Salon, the #41095 LEGO Friends Emma’s House, the  #41101 LEGO Friends Heartlake Grand Hotel, the #41118 LEGO Friends Heartlake Supermarket, the #41119 LEGO Friends Cupcake Café, the #41311 LEGO Friends Heartlake Pizzeria, and the #41314 LEGO Friends Stephanie’s House.

However, there are also locations on the map that don’t have a corresponding LEGO Friends set as of yet. This includes the Heartlake Museum, the Town Hall, and the Dance Studio. I wonder if we could take this map as an indication of future LEGO Friends sets. We already know that the 2017 summer wave will include a hospital and sets related to skiing, but a town hall and a museum would be really nice too!

I’m really looking forward to the new Elves sets. Those little gobblings are adorable. I like them even better than the baby dragons. There is one set which is my favorite with little houses for each of the gobblins.

People have been asking for a museum for a long time, so maybe it will come in Friends? Looking forward to see if you are right about that map!

You are probably thinking of the #41185 Magic Rescue from the Goblin. For those who are not familiar with the 2017 Elves sets yet, they are listed here: http://brickset.com/sets/year-2017/theme-Elves. I also really like this wave.

As far as the Friends sets, we will just have to wait and see. I thought it was a bit suspicious that all the locations on the map were actual sets, except for those three. 🙄

I remember there was some old Castle map like that that showed off the Elves’ land or something, but the plans were shelved before any sets got into production.

        • admin January 18, 2017, 8:45 PM

Oh, yes, I remember that! It was indeed a Castle map, and in the upper right corner (if I remember correctly) there was the land of the elves. I think it was scraped because they were already working on the Lord of the Rings sets.

Yeah, it could have been from 2009-2010, between Fantasy Era and LOTR…

Of course Elflands is on the left! I always mix up my directions. 🙄

There seems to be only two pieces now with yellow elf ears, the hairpiece from the CMF elf, and the green cap from Santa’s helpers… Would be useful with more, although the variety for Light Flesh ears is a bit better…

                  • admin January 19, 2017, 4:05 PM

There are some other pointy ears as well. Like in the Nexo Knights sets (in red), and the Green Goblin cap (with green ears). But yeah, as far as yellow elf ears, they are rare. I just buy them on Brick when I need more, and I also don’t mind painting them. They are easy to turn into pretty much any color. I would actually like to see a LEGO Castle elven race with different color elves. Kind of like what LEGO is doing with the new LEGO Elves goblins. 🙄

                    • Håkan January 19, 2017, 6:21 PM

Painting could be an option… I did some enamel painting on pewter miniatures in the 90’s… Warhammer-ish things… Turned out decent, but I could use some improvement…

I saw that the Elves had various skin colors, although mostly the variations appeared fairly natural, not any outlandish fantasy colors…

                    • admin January 20, 2017, 11:07 AM

Yeah, that’s why I like those Elves goblins. The colors are subtle enough to show they are different than humans, without being too unbelievable.

There was the set 60008 Museum Break-in in 2013, but the museum itself was rather small.

That’s true, but what people have been asking for is a modular type Museum. Something big and impressive. I think Friends could actually deliver in this regard, as it already had some pretty large buildings. Not Modular style big, but still fairly large.

I have museum break in and I plan to make a much better museum using some of its elements and some other things.

I want to gush about my most recent retro acquistion. I finally found a legit copy of 1490 Town Bank and I just built it tonight. Complete with genuine stickers and it was over $100 cheaper than the one I had previously tried to buy that someone had parted together and paired with the instructions and tried to sell it as legit and didn’t disclose the lack of stickers. I don’t know if you remember when I mentioned that happened. I threatened to go to ebay for misrepresentation so they let me return it. This one that I have now is the real deal. I’m so happy. My brother and I had missed out on ordering it when it was on the back of Brick Kicks magazine in either 1988 or 1989 because my mom had gotten mad at us for some reason and refused to order it. So glad to have it now. http://brickset.com/sets/1490-1/Town-Bank

Ahhh… fixing a childhood disappointment is always so satisfying! That’s a nice set you got there! 😀

    • Håkan January 19, 2017, 11:25 AM

Ah, yeah… Seems to be the first Legoland bank… Banks have been kinda juniorized and disregarded until the Brick Bank in 2016…

(A Brickset review states that the Pirates theme was released a year prior to the set, but it appears it was only released a year later than it…)

I was just wondering when you got this and where from since it’s my understanding that as of 2017 there is no more Lego Club magazine since the roll out of Lego Life. Thanks!

    • admin March 7, 2017, 9:53 PM

Christa, I’m a subscriber to the magazine and receive the issues by mail. I don’t remember the exact date of when I received this particular issue, but the article was published on the 18th of January, so I should have gotten it a couple of days earlier. It says on the front that this is the January-February 2017 issue. While I think it’s certainly possible that LEGO Life will eventually replace the LEGO Club Magazine, I haven’t seen an official announcement yet.
