LEGO DC Super Hero Girls review – part 2

At least in the US, the 2017 LEGO DC Super Hero Girls sets were released in two waves. The first three sets appeared in December of last year, and the final three sets were added at the beginning of January. We already discussed the early-release sets (see: LEGO DC Super Hero Girls Sets Review), and today we will take a look at the new additions. 🙂

As you probably know already from our previous discussions, LEGO DC Super Hero Girls is based on a new franchise launched by DC Comics and Mattel in 2015, featuring well-known DC Super Heroes as teens, dealing with the awkwardness of growing up and attending high school, with the added stress of having superpowers. The franchise includes a mini-movie series, books, action figures from Mattel, and now LEGO sets.

The first three sets released last year were the #41230 LEGO DC Super Hero Girls Batgirl Batjet Chase, the #41231 LEGO DC Super Hero Girls Harley Quinn to the Rescue, and the #41232 LEGO DC Super Hero Girls High School. This last set is the largest, and the center of all the activities. See review of the first three sets here: LEGO DC Super Hero Girls Sets Review.

#41233 LEGO DC SUPER HERO GIRLS LASHINA TANK: This is one of the smallest set in the series, and features a small tank for Lashina that can shoot studs, a small doghouse for Krypto who wears an adorable mini superhero cape, Lashina in a somewhat risqué outfit, and a Kryptomite. Note that the Kryptomites are a different color in each set, so they are collectible. I would say that this set is most worth it for the unique characters. Here is the official description: Join in the action-packed LEGO DC Super Hero Girls world as Supergirl’s dog Krypto faces Lashina and the blue Kryptomite. This great set features a Lashina mini-doll figure, Lashina’s tank with a stud shooter and space in the back for Krypto, plus Krypto’s house with defense shield and a catapult. 145 pieces. Price: $14.99 – BUY HERE

#41234 LEGO DC SUPER HERO GIRLS BUMBLEBEE HELICOPTER: While this set is the same price and piece-count as the previous one, I have to say that the helicopter looks a lot more interesting thank the tank. Besides a unique mini-doll that only appears in this set, you also get two unique Kryptomites, and a helicopter that not only looks good, but is also full of useful parts. Here is the official description: Be part of the action-packed LEGO DC Super Hero Girls world as Bumblebee protects her shipment of crystals from the Kryptomites. This great set features a Bumblebee mini-doll figure, helicopter with opening cockpit, spinning rotors, stud shooters, zipline and space in the back for the crystals, plus a dumpster and small stud shooter for the two angry red Kryptomites. 142 pieces. Price: $14.99 – BUY HERE

#41235 LEGO DC SUPER HERO GIRLS WONDER WOMAN DORM: This set is only a bit more expensive than the other two, but it is by far the most talked about – mostly because of the unique translucent-clear motorbike. The rest of the set doesn’t look bad either, and it can be connected to the #41232 LEGO DC Super Hero Girls High School as an extension. Here is the official description: Be part of the action-packed LEGO DC Super Hero Girls world as Wonder Woman protects her Golden Lasso from the Kryptomite. This great set features a Wonder Woman mini-doll figure, dorm room with an opening window, bed with a secret drawer/screen, separate opening wardrobe and workstation, plus an ‘invisible’ motorbike, tool/paint and a suspicious orange Kryptomite. 186 pieces. Price: $19.99 – BUY HERE

DC Super Hero Girls by Mattel specifically targets preteen girls, and the LEGO sets do a great job following the same spirit. They include a lot of decorative elements, accessories, and play-spaces for storytelling, and the mini-dolls are absolutely gorgeous. However since LEGO is ultimately a gender and age-neutral toy, there are plenty here for boys and older LEGO fans to enjoy as well. Based on what I have heard and read so far, LEGO DC Super Hero Girls has been received with a lot of enthusiasm, and fans are already asking for more. I also wanted to share with you this great picture of the LEGO DC Super Hero Girls design team posted on LEGO’s Facebook page. It is always nice to see the people who design our favorite sets.

There are only six sets in the LEGO DC Super Hero Girls series, and most of them are inexpensive, so it’s possible to collect the whole line without much difficulty. And of course you can also just pick the ones you like the most. Personally, I’m not planning to get all the sets, but I’m definitely going to collect all of the mini-dolls, as I really like them. All six sets are available at the LEGO DC Super Hero Girls section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? How do you like the LEGO DC Super Hero Girls sets? Did you get any of them already? Or are you planning to? And how to you like the mini-dolls and the Kryptomites? Fee free to share your thoughts and own review in the comment section below! 😉

What motorcycle model is that? I’ve tried some models, but it seemed that most weren’t compatible with mini-dolls due to their protruding feet. (The old bicycle and scooter were compatible.)

Also, there are no pink kryptomites?

I like the smaller sets more. They are affordable, include one unique super hero, and something extra to play with. I just don’t like the school that much. I know it’s not lego’s fault, the original buildling is weird too, and it just doesn’t translate to lego that well. It has some neat playfeatures, but it’s not a set I would want to display. Overall I think the smaller sets are just a better value, especially if you care about collecting the mini dolls.

Yes, that’s a reasonable approach. The smaller sets are also a good intro to the theme, or could be repurposed for custom designs. Once you decide you like them, you can look into some of the medium-size sets. The school definitely has a very unique shape, but that’s how the source-material is, so there is not much LEGO could do about that. It does have some nice play-features though, as you said.
