German Toy Fair new LEGO sets & more!

This time of the year is always exciting for LEGO fans because of the various toy fairs where LEGO reveals many of the new sets and themes. The London Toy Fair took place at the end of January, however this year the restrictions were even tighter than usual, so nothing really came out of this event. The much more interesting German Toy fair just finished yesterday, with LEGO having a significant presence. And there is also the New York Toy Fair, which is going to be held later this month. So let’s take a look at what was revealed so far. 🙂

The German Toy Fair pictures enclosed here have been shared by PromoBricks, and you can find even more images at their Facebook page. There is also a good selection of photos from different angles at this Brickset flickr gallery. I have also included some video-footage by Zusammengebaut in the play-list below, so you can see the new sets in more detail.

2017 LEGO ARCHITECTURE SETS: There are a couple of new LEGO Architecture sets coming; the #21035 LEGO Architecture Guggenheim Museum and the #21036 LEGO Architecture Arc De Triomphe. Both are quite substantial sets and the designs look very nice.

2017 LEGO CITY COASTGUARD SETS: The LEGO City Coast Guard sets get resurrected regularly with fresh designs. This time we get the #60163 LEGO City Coast Guard Starter Set, the #60164 LEGO City Sea Rescue Plane, the #60165 LEGO City 4×4 Response Unit, the #60166 LEGO City Heavy-Duty Rescue, the #60167 LEGO City Coast Guard Headquarters, and the #60169 LEGO City Coast Guard Cargo Terminal. It’s nice that LEGO is using the same color-scheme as before, so the sets can be mixed with the previous releases.

2017 LEGO CITY JUNGLE SETS: This is the new sub-theme for LEGO City, replacing the LEGO City Volcano Exploration sets from last year. The new sets are still about exploration, but this time the adventure takes place in the jungle. Sets include the #60156 LEGO City Jungle Buggy, the #60157 LEGO City Jungle Starter Set, the #60158 LEGO City Jungle Cargo Helicopter, the #60159 LEGO City Jungle Halftrack Mission, the #60160 LEGO City Jungle Mobile Lab, and the #60161 LEGO City Exploration Site. At least to me, one of the most exciting features is the new big cat mould.

2017 LEGO CITY OTHER SETS: The #60134 LEGO City Fun the Park – City People Pack has been very well received by LEGO fans, so LEGO is releasing a similar set later this year called the #60153 LEGO City Fun at the Beach – City People Pack. Another interesting new set is the #60154 LEGO City Bus Station, which is the second set that includes a wheelchair.

2017 LEGO CREATOR SETS: There is a good number of LEGO Creator sets coming later this year as well. This includes the #31066 LEGO Creator Space Shuttle Explorer, the #31070 LEGO Creator Turbo Track Racer, the #31067 LEGO Creator Poolside Holiday, the #31068 LEGO Creator Modern Home, and the #31069 LEGO Creator Family Villa.

2017 LEGO JUNIORS SETS: LEGO Juniors continues to offer an excellent selection of sets for children who are transitioning from DUPLO to regular LEGO. The sets are also interesting for adults because of the very nice designs and unique printed elements. Upcoming sets include the #10738 LEGO Juniors Snow White’s Forest Cottage, and some other sets that are not yet named.

2017 LEGO SPEED CHAMPIONS SETS: These sets have been revealed already, but since they haven’t been released yet, I will list them here: #75877 LEGO Speed Champions Mercedes-AMG GT3, #75878 LEGO Speed Champions Bugatti Chiron, #75879 LEGO Speed Scuderia-Ferrari SF16-H, #75880 LEGO Speed Champions McLaren Road Car, #75881 LEGO Speed Champions 2016 Ford GT & 1966 Ford GT40, #75882 LEGO Speed Champions Ferrari FXX K & Development, and #75883 LEGO Speed Champions Mercedes AMG. You can see all the sets in the Brickset database.

2017 LEGO DISNEY CARS SETS: It was also revealed at the German Toy Fair that the LEGO Disney Cars theme is coming back with eight new sets featuring scenes and characters from the Cars 3 movie. The sets were not on display.

2017 LEGO TECHNIC SETS: There were three LEGO Technic vehicles displayed at the German Toy Fair; the #42068 LEGO Technic Airport Rescue Vehicle, the #42069 LEGO Technic Extreme Adventure, and the #42070 LEGO Technic 6×6 All Terrain Tow Truck. They may not be as exciting as last year’s sets, but they do have solid designs, and the teddy bear on the tow truck is such a winning detail.

2017 LEGO MARVEL SUPER HEROES SETS: While these sets have been revealed previously, it is worth mentioning that the three new LEGO Marvel Super Heroes sets were also on display, including the #76079 LEGO Super Heroes Ravager Attack, the #76080 LEGO Super Heroes Ayesha’s Revenge, and the #76081 LEGO Super Heroes The Milano vs. The Abilisk. It is interesting to see this new version of the Milano and comparing it to the older one in the #76021 LEGO Super Heroes The Milano Spaceship Rescue set from 2014. There were also some set boxes displayed based on upcoming films, but with no set images. This includes two LEGO Super Heroes Spider-Man: Homecoming sets (#76082 and #76083), and two LEGO Super Heroes Thor; Ragnarok sets (#76084 and #75088).

2017 LEGO DC SUPER HEROES SETS: For the 2017 LEGO DC Super Heroes Justice League sets only the boxes were displayed with no set images. This includes #76085, #76086, and #76087.

2017 LEGO BATMAN MOVIE SETS: There will be a second wave of LEGO Batman Movie sets coming this summer, including the #70913 LEGO Batman Movie Scarecrow Fearful Face-Off, the #70914 LEGO Batman Movie Bane Toxic Truck Attack, the #70915 LEGO Batman Movie Two-Face Double, the #70916 LEGO Batman Movie The Batwing, and the #70917 LEGO Batman Movie set with no revealed name.

2017 LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE SETS: The LEGO Ninjago movie is coming out later this year, and the new sets will be based on the film. They were not on display at the German Toy Fair, but since we already have their names, I thought to include them here; #70606 LEGO Ninjago Movie Jay’s Electro Waver, #70607 LEGO Ninjago Movie Titanium Turbo, #70608 LEGO Ninjago Movie Samurai Stealth Takedown, #70609 LEGO Ninjago Movie Master’s Dojo, #70610 LEGO Ninjago Movie Nya’s Water Brigade, #70611 LEGO Ninjago Movie Dragon’s Cove, #70612 LEGO Ninjago Movie Spinjitzu Sanctuary, #70613 LEGO Ninjago Movie Ninja Wake Run, #70614 LEGO Ninjago Movie Kai’s Blazing Breaker, #70615 LEGO Ninjago Movie Rai Mech, #70616 LEGO Ninjago Movie Krypt of the Cave, #70617 LEGO Ninjago Movie Backstreet Break-in, #70618 LEGO Ninjago Movie Shadow Legion Ambush, and #70620 Ninjago Movie City Invasion. Besides these fourteen sets, there are also going to be a series of twenty LEGO Ninjago Movie Collectible Minifigures.

2017 LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS SETS: LEGO Nexo Knights is also continuing with another strong wave. Sets include the #70353 LEGO Nexo Knights The Heligoyle, the #70354 Axl’s Rumble Maker, the #70355 LEGO Nexo Knights Aaron’s Rock Climber, #70356 LEGO Nexo Knights The Colossus of Ultimate Destruction, #70357 LEGO Nexo Knights Knighton Castle, the #70361 LEGO Nexo Knights Macy’s Bot Drop Dragon, and the #70373 LEGO Nexo Knights Nexo Combo Powers Wave 2.

2017 LEGO BOOST SET: The new robotics kit called LEGO BOOST was also showcased at the German Toy Fair. See the full press-release with more details on this set here: LEGO BOOST – A New Type of LEGO Robotics

2017 LEGO ELVES SETS: The first wave of the LEGO Elves goblin sets will be released this spring, and three more sets will be coming in the summer. This includes the #41186 LEGO Elves Azari & the Escape from the Goblins, the #41187 LEGO Elves Rosalyn’s Healing Shelter, and the #41188 LEGO Elves Escape from the Goblin King’s Fortress.

2017 LEGO FRIENDS SETS: The main subtheme for LEGO Friends is going to be winter sports. Upcoming sets include the #41321 LEGO Friends Winter Sports SUV, the #41322 LEGO Friends Winter Sports Ski Rink, the #41323 LEGO Friends Winter Sports Ski Chalet, and the #41324 LEGO Friends Winter Sports Ski Lift. Other sets that will be coming later this year are the #41315 LEGO Friends Heartlake Surf Shop, the #41316 LEGO Friends Andrea’s Speedboat Transport, the #41317 Sunshine Catamaran, and the highly anticipated #41318 LEGO Friends Heartlake Hospital.

2017 LEGO STAR WARS SETS: While the upcoming LEGO Star Wars sets were not displayed at the German Toy Fair, some of the set numbers and names are already listed in the Brickset database, so for the sake of completeness I thought to include them here: #75166 LEGO Star Wars First Order Transport Speeder Battle Pack, #75167 LEGO Star Wars Bounty Hunter Speeder Bike Battle Pack, #75178 LEGO Star Wars Jakku Quad Jumper, #75180 LEGO Star Wars Rathtar Escape, #75182 LEGO Star Wars Republic Fighter Tank, #75183 LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader Transformation, #75185 LEGO Star Wars Freemaker Adventures Tracker I, #75186 LEGO Star Wars Freemaker Adventures The Arrowhead, #75531 LEGO Star Wars Stormtrooper Commander, and #75532 LEGO Star Wars Scout Trooper & Speeder Bike.

After a fantastic selection of super awesome sets in 2016, it seems like that 2017 is a bit more muted, with sets that are mostly rehashes of older themes and proven designs. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it allows LEGO fans to carefully select the sets they are most attracted to, rather than feeling pressured to buy the next big and shiny thing. Also, while the designs may not look as interesting as last year, with the introduction of some really excellent new elements and colors, there is a lot to learn and appreciate in regards to building techniques. Also, keep in mind that more upcoming sets may be revealed during the New York Toy Fair.

So what do you think? How do you like the 2017 LEGO sets and themes revealed so far? Which sets are you looking forward to the most, and which ones are you planning to get? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

The Lego city Jungle looks Cool. and the elves sets are interesting. Can’t wait for Lego Batman Move and the Lego Batman Dimensions Game .

    • admin February 6, 2017, 2:02 PM

Agree. There are some solid sets here. 🙂

    • admin February 6, 2017, 2:50 PM

Only four more sleeps to The LEGO Batman Movie! 😀

  • OhioBricker February 6, 2017, 1:05 PM

Had not noticed the big cat in the Jungle theme. That’s pretty cool. I’m very excited about the Creator houses and some of the new City sets. I’ll be getting Fun at the Beach, but not until it goes on sale. I still feel dumb for buying two of Fun at the Park at full price–thinking they might sell out. Loser.

    • Håkan February 6, 2017, 1:20 PM

There were two different forms of the cat mould, I think; a black panther and a leopard.

And the bus should have a disability ramp, or what it’s called, for the wheelchair.

      • admin February 6, 2017, 2:04 PM

There are definitely two big cats, but isn’t the mould the same, just different coloration? It is kind of hard to see. And yes, the bus should have a disability ramp.

        • Håkan February 6, 2017, 2:42 PM

Yeah, that’s what I meant; different coloration.

          • admin February 6, 2017, 2:49 PM

Okay, cool. That makes sense. 🙂

    • admin February 6, 2017, 2:03 PM

LEGO is well aware of the popularity of the Fun in the Park set. I’m sure they will make plenty of both. And yes, the Creator houses are nice, and so are the big cats. 🙂

  • Will February 6, 2017, 1:33 PM

I think this round of LEGO City Jungle is going to get me. That cat mold is something I’ve been waiting for.

I was also hoping that they’d show off the Pirates of the Caribbean sets, but I guess since they’re slated for March/April it is too close to release.

All in all, decent line up. Good year to catch up on a few series that I’m still working on.

    • admin February 6, 2017, 2:06 PM

They showed many of the sets that are coming out shortly, and even some that are already out, so I don’t think that’s the reason for not displaying the POTC sets. It probably more has to do with licensing agreement. But we should be seeing them soon one way or another. 🙂

      • Håkan February 6, 2017, 3:04 PM

Will there be several POTC sets? Brickset only lists one. For some reason, the license seems a bit haphazard, with sets related to different movies all released in 2011.

        • admin February 6, 2017, 3:07 PM

It’s hard to tell. I have read both ways. There is definitely one big set, but then I have also heard there might be some smaller ones as well. LEGO has the whole thing under tight wraps and not much leaked as of yet.

  • Lego Kim February 6, 2017, 1:39 PM

I’m super excited about the city sets. Those look great and the Creator houses!

    • admin February 6, 2017, 2:07 PM

Yeah, both Creator and City are well done. Hopefully we will get set images soon with more details. 🙂

  • brickmaster February 7, 2017, 12:35 PM

What I’m really looking forward to are the Ninjago Movie sets. I read that the new trailer is coming out tomorrow! Is that right?

    • admin February 7, 2017, 3:29 PM

Yeah, new trailer tomorrow, and we will be talking about it soon! 🙂

I can’t give a definitive opinion until after the NY Toy Fair, but I’m not as interested in these sets as I was in the 2016 summer sets. However, I do like the Architecture, City Jungle, and what we’ve seen of the Elves so far. The largest Jungle set reminds me of Indiana Jones – I really like it, and hopefully the price isn’t ridiculous – and the 41188 Goblin King’s Fortress looks great too. The Batman Movie summer sets are also neat; I like the Batwing. Star Wars sounds interesting as well; I don’t see many re-hashes there, so hopefully the sets are good. I want to see what the Ninjago Movie sets look like (especially now that I’ve seen clips from the movie), although I wonder if they’ll be in NY, seeing as the movie is still a while away.
For some reason I’m underwhelmed by the Creator and Technic sets: they’re good, but they don’t really impress me. I like 31070, I’m happy that 42068 finally made it, and 42070 is a cool idea, but everything else looks a little lackluster. I suppose more images could change my mind, though. 😕
BTW, #42068 is called Airport Rescue Vehicle, not Fire Rescue Vehicle – it’s on the box (unless the box is wrong). 🙂

    • BLProductions February 7, 2017, 3:03 PM

Also, admin, I’ve been having trouble posting comments here recently. On Saturday, every time I tried to comment it gave me the error 404 page (your use of “gnarly” there is fitting, BTW). I tried several times, and my comment was not lengthy. It almost went there again as I posted my above comment, but managed to get through. Do you have any idea why this is happening? 😕

      • admin February 7, 2017, 3:43 PM

Hm… not sure. The gnarly message is actually a default by Wordpress, but the fact that you got a 404 page is concerning. I don’t know what to think. It could have been just a temporary glitch, or something more serious. Nobody else reported any problems, but sometimes people just don’t say anything when they run into issues. If you experience it again email me and I will ask my tech person to look into it. As it is now several days after the fact, it would be difficult to tell. I don’t think the server is under stress. I didn’t see any unusual spikes.

        • admin February 7, 2017, 4:03 PM

I checked from my other computer, my kindle and my phone, and I don’t see anything obviously wrong. Also, other people seem to be posting messages all-right. Anyway, just let me know if you experience it again.

        • BLProductions February 7, 2017, 4:12 PM

If it’s a temporary glitch, it has a long time-span. Every time I’ve posted today I watch the top search bar (the one with the URL), and first I see the error page loading (I can’t remember what its URL is) before it switches back to the site page with my posted comment like it should. I know what you mean about people not reporting problems; I try to avoid doing so myself, but I thought this issue to be significant, seeing as it happened multiple times.
It could be my computer again (as it seems to be with most Internet problems I have), as my Internet has been acting up this week (yesterday it couldn’t load youtube videos). Safari is really becoming a pain to deal with, but every Apple update of late is terrible, so I refuse to upgrade. My email still works, though, so I will alert you if it happens again.

          • admin February 7, 2017, 4:17 PM

Okay, I logged into my server to see if I see anything unusual. I do see that someone was trying to leave a comment eight times on the PAB Wall Survey Results post. It doesn’t give me any more info, but I’m guessing that might have been you. There are no other comments related error messages on the log, so that’s a good thing. I will monitor the error logs tomorrow as well. You might want to clear your cookies, as your browser may be automatically loading the error page simply because it is cached.

            • BLProductions February 7, 2017, 4:22 PM

Oh, yeah, that was me. I was trying to say that I liked the colors but not all the parts selected. 😀
I’ll see if I can clear my cookies and report the results, if any. Is it possible to clear cookies for just this site? I’d rather not lose my progress on LEGO.com games….

              • admin February 7, 2017, 4:27 PM

Hm… as far as I know, when you clear your cookies/empty your cache you clear them all. They should also be automatically cleared by your browser on a regular basis. I don’t think you should be loosing anything important, but I don’t play LEGO games, so I’m not sure how it would effect your games.

                • BLProductions February 7, 2017, 5:09 PM

Apparently for Safari, automatic clearing is not automatic, or I haven’t enabled that function (if that’s possible). I have lost progress before on LEGO games that I didn’t sign into my account for when my browser (or the site) was changed.
Anyways, I’ve cleared the cookies/caches for this website, so hopefully it will work fine now. I guess this is a test comment, then. 🙂

                  • BLProductions February 7, 2017, 5:15 PM

Well, I still saw the quick change of URL, but the comment (obviously) went through fine, and I see no other oddities. It’s probably just my outdated browser acting up, so in a day or two any issue will be gone.

                    • admin February 7, 2017, 5:18 PM

If your browser is really old, that could definitely be an issue, but as long as the comments go through you should be okay. It is best to update to a modern browser though as you can get some serious security issues.

          • BLProductions February 7, 2017, 4:18 PM

Also, I noticed that after I post a comment, the “Leave a Comment” thing has “http://deleted” under the website bar. And I think that on Saturday when I went back a page from the error page, I saw an additional bar below the comment box that had something to do with years. That bar had something in it (definitely a 4 and a 3 at least), but it promptly disappeared when the page finished loading, so I’m not sure. Would either of these have an effect? 😕

            • admin February 7, 2017, 4:23 PM

That’s done by a plugin to stop spam comments. You shouldn’t be seeing that. I really suggest that you empty your cache/clear your cookies. It is possible that for some reason the plugin thought you were a spammer. Or there is something it doesn’t like about your browser. Plugins have their own minds. 🙄

    • admin February 7, 2017, 3:33 PM

The Technic sets are definitely more subdued/traditional designs rather than crazy awesome contraption like the Bucket Wheel Excavator. It is best to wait for better pictures rather than just judging from the pictures and videos. I think there was some restriction on how close people could get to the displays, because the video footage and pictures are not nearly as good as they were in previous years. We shall see if the New York Toy Fair reveals more/better images.

    • admin February 7, 2017, 3:38 PM

#42068 is listed as Fire Rescue vehicle on Brickset, so I’m not sure if it the LEGO box that’s wrong, or Brickset is wrong.

      • BLProductions February 7, 2017, 3:58 PM

Yeah, I’m not sure why Brickset says “Fire” now; since 2015 (when the set was first rumored) it was called “Airport Rescue Vehicle” (and it was like that in the Brickset database until recently). It could be a box error, but I haven’t seen such an error before (box errors usually relate to part count). Whichever version is at the NY Toy Fair should be the correct one, I think, so we’ll know for sure then.

        • admin February 7, 2017, 4:01 PM

I changed it for now because the box definitely says Airport Rescue. If at the New York Toy Fair it turns out to be Fire Rescue I can change it back. 😀

  • MOOKE February 7, 2017, 9:43 PM

I cant wate for the lego ninjago movie and its sets those are proboly were all my money will go

    • admin February 7, 2017, 11:15 PM

Yeah, mine too! I’m already scared! 🙄
