LEGO Cars 3 movie new sets & contest!

Cars are back! To correspond with the upcoming Cars 3 film that is scheduled for release in mid-June of this year, LEGO recently added a series of LEGO Cars 3 sets to the LEGO Juniors and LEGO DUPLO lines. In addition, LEGO is also running a contest for teen and adult LEGO fans at their ReBrick website. So let’s talk about all of this. 🙂

LEGO JUNIORS CARS 3 SETS: While the previous LEGO Cars sets were released under their own sub-theme back in 2011 and 2012, this time the sets are under the LEGO Juniors line. This means that the sets are simpler builds, and all the decorated pieces are printed – both are good choices for the LEGO Cars collection. The seven sets already available are as follows: #10730 LEGO Juniors Lightning McQueen Speed Launcher, #10731 LEGO Juniors Cruz Ramirez Race Simulator, #10732 LEGO Juniors Guido and Luigi’s Pit Stop, #10733 LEGO Juniors Mater’s Junkyard, #10742 LEGO Juniors Willy’s Butte Speed Training, #10743 LEGO Juniors Smokey’s Garage, and #10744 LEGO Juniors Thunder Hollow Crazy 8 Race. And there will be one more set, the #10745 LEGO Juniors Florida 500 Race Final released sometime later. You can find all the currently available sets under the LEGO Juniors section of the Online LEGO Shop.

As you can see, three of the sets come with one car, two sets include two cars each, and the two largest sets have three and four cars. That’s a lot of very fun little vehicles. I particularly like Smokey’s garage, with two excellent looking classic cars, and of course Mater, Guido and Luigi are fan-favorites. And just look at all those gorgeous printed pieces! It’s worth getting the sets just for those! And the prices are not bad at all.

LEGO DUPLO CARS 3 SETS: Just like with the previous two Cars movies, there are Cars 3 sets under the LEGO DUPLO line as well. Although they are meant for children ages 2-5, the sets are so cute, I won’t be surprised if older kids and adult collectors also get them. Amongst the earlier sets my favorites were the #5829 LEGO DUPLO Pit Stop with the adorable hippy bus Fillmore from 2011, and the #6132 LEGO DUPLO Cars set with Red from 2012. In the 2017 collection, there are three sets: #10846 LEGO DUPLO Flo’s Cafe, #10856 LEGO DUPLO Mater’s Shed, and #10857 LEGO DUPLO Piston Cup Race. The chubby size and rounder shapes of LEGO DUPLO are a perfect match for Cars, and as on all LEGO DUPLO sets, the decorated pieces are printed. See the LEGO DUPLO section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO CARS 3 CONTEST: While the LEGO Cars 3 sets mainly target children, the LEGO Cars Brick Posters Contest is for teen and adult LEGO fans (you have to be at least 13 to participate). The challenge is to create a your own LEGO brick-built movie poster for the Cars 3 film. You can create a brick-built version of an existing poster, or set up a scene showing what you think would make a great poster for the next installment of Lightning McQueen’s story. The deadline to enter is June 1st, 2017 at 10:00 AM EST.

A panel of judges from the LEGO Juniors team and Pixar Animation Studios will select one grand prize winner and two runner-up winners. The grand prize winner will receive a $200 shopping spree at the Online LEGO Shop, a unique Car-ified artwork of the winner made by a Disney artist in a LEGO-made frame, a one-of-a-kind LEGO mosaic of the Car-ified artwork, a Disney-Pixar Cars 3 movie poster signed by the filmmakers, and all eight of the new LEGO Juniors Cars 3 sets we talked about above. The two runner-ups will receive the same prizes, except for the personalized artwork and mosaic. You can read other details on the contest here: LEGO CARS 3 CONTEST AT REBRICK

While LEGO usually only release a couple of sets related to animated Disney films, they have been investing a lot more into the Cars franchise. Cars really is a good fit for LEGO due to the similar design style, colors, the popularity of the films, and because kids just love to play with cars. What do you think? How do you like the new LEGO Cars 3 sets? Are you planning to get any of them? And are you going to enter the contest? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below! 😉

So the sets contain chromed mechanics’ tools? That’s actually pretty cool…

    • admin May 5, 2017, 10:55 AM

I wish! LEGO rarely uses chrome these days. I think the last one we have seen was the ring from Lord of the Rings in 2012. Chrome parts are expensive to make and they don’t age well. The tools are just regular pearly metallic plastic.

Still better than ordinary opaque colors.

(Although it isn’t enough in itself to make me buy any of the sets, anyway…)

They will be listed on BrickLink soon enough, so you should be able to get them separately, if you like. 🙂

I’ve never made a BrickLink order yet, but it’s worth considering…

            • admin May 7, 2017, 1:09 PM

BrickLink is a LEGO fan’s heaven. I shop there much more often then directly from LEGO. I think I placed around 400 orders so far, and never had a bad experience. If you build your own projects, it is much more efficient and cheaper than trying to get parts from sets. 🙂

So I don’t understand this contest. Are you supposed to use graphic design to make a poster, or build something like a mosaic out of Lego bricks that look like a poster, or build a scene that would look good as a poster? So confusing.

    • Xevo May 5, 2017, 1:27 PM

It’s definitely way less clear what they’re looking for than previous contests IMO.

      • admin May 5, 2017, 1:41 PM

ReBrick contest rules are often convoluted. I often have to read through the questions/comments section to understand them better before writing a post. Taking a look at the current entries and reading through the questions/comments section does help.

    • admin May 5, 2017, 1:40 PM

Yeah, it’s kind of confusing, isn’t it? A good way to get a better understanding is to look at the current entries, and also ask questions in the comment section of the contest. I did read through the current questions and answers by the admins, and what I’m reading is that the entry much be made out of LEGO bricks, however you can use Photo Shop or similar editing programs to make it look more like a poster. And you can definitely make a mosaic! I have already seen some other people do that.

My impression is that that the rules are kept vague for this contest for a reason; they don’t want to limit people’s creativity. If you look at the current entries, you will see that people interpreted the contest in a number of different ways, and they were accepted as valid entries (all entries need approval from the admins). Hope this helps some. 🙂

There’s something wrong with the wheels on those cars that makes them look really weird… especially Lightning McQueen’s back, as seen in the first image. Of course, as Juniors sets, they’re full of new parts (at least 3, including a new chassis piece used in every set). The DUPLO sets look better, but probably because all the vehicles are specially-molded parts. That contest is indeed vague, but I won’t be entering it anyways. I still need to enter the Modular contest, and there’s only a week left for that…. 😕
Also, my mom got some LEGO stuff in the mail the other day, and received a Ninjago sticker sheet advertising Hands of Time with it. It says the season will be “Daily at 6:30pm” on CN, starting May 15th. Finally! 🙂 I still don’t have CN though, so I need to figure out how to watch the show.

    • admin May 5, 2017, 10:04 PM

Oh, I just got that sticker-sheet in the mail too! So exciting! I don’t have CN either, but I’m sure someone will post the episodes on YouTube. We will just have to watch them very quickly before they get banned 🙄

I agree that the back wheel section of the Juniors Cars are little weird. I have to see them in person though to make a final judgment. Sometimes things don’t look as good in pictures as in real life, and sometimes it’s the other way around.

BTW, have you seen the upcoming Ninjago ship???!!! OMG!!! It’s so gorgeous! 😀

      • BLProductions May 7, 2017, 3:14 PM

Yep… YouTube it is for the episodes…. That’s how I watched the first two seasons and Skybound, though, so I’m used to the fluctuating quality. 😕
What’s this “upcoming Ninjago ship” you speak of? I haven’t seen anything of that sort. Is it one of the Ninjago Movie sets? #70618 Destiny’s Bounty, perhaps? I really hope we start to see official images of the Ninjago Movie sets soon.

        • admin May 7, 2017, 4:38 PM

Check this video about the upcoming sets. The ship is about 1:40 minutes: https://youtu.be/UEgR_HAERT8

          • BLProductions May 8, 2017, 2:26 PM

That’s Destiny’s Bounty alright, and you are right about it looking awesome! It has a interior in the hull as well, which we haven’t really seen since MetalBeard’s Sea Cow for TLM. The other sets in the video look interesting as well, although nothing that I like as much. 😕 Thanks for the link. 🙂

            • admin May 8, 2017, 2:51 PM

I like the red mech, and the ship the most. The rest I have to see closer to make a decision. But I’m definitely getting those two. I have been wanting to buy an Oxford Korean turtle ship, because it is so beautiful, but so expensive in the US. This one is pretty close as an awesome Asian-style ship. 😀
