May 2017 – new LEGO sets & promotions

May is always super exciting for LEGO Star Wars fans, because of Star Wars Day on May the 4th! As you will see below, there are several LEGO Star Wars related promotions this month that you can take advantage of, and also a brand new LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series set. So let’s dive into the details and see what we are getting! 🙂

FREE LEGO STAR WARS R2-D2 SET: Between May 4-7th, you will get a free #30611 LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 polybag with any LEGO Star Wars purchase of $50 or more. This is a really nice brick-built version of R2-D2 that I’m sure is going to be popular with collectors. You can check out all the sets under the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

FREE LEGO SUPER HEROES MINI MILANO SET: The second freebie this month is a free #30449 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Mini Milano with purchases of $35 or more, between May 8-21st. This is a mini version of the recently released #76081 LEGO Super Heroes The Milano vs. The Abilisk set, with the same color-scheme. Please note that this offer is valid on all purchases, however if you are into Marvel superheroes, you might want to check out all the sets under the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO STAR WARS DOUBLE VIP POINTS & SALES: Going back to Star Wars, during the May the 4th weekend (May 4-7th), LEGO VIP members will earn Double VIP Points on all LEGO Star Wars purchases both at official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO STAR WARS ITEMS ON SALE: Some LEGO Star Wars items are going to be on sale during the May the 4th weekend, although at this point it is not clear which ones. So make sure you check the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO STAR WARS BONUS VIP POINTS: During the month of May, you will also earn Double VIP Points on two LEGO Star Wars sets; the #75171 LEGO Star Wars Battle on Scarif, and the #75172 LEGO Star Wars Y-wing Starfighter. If you have been eyeing these sets, this is an excellent time to pick them up. They are both available at the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO STAR WARS UCS SNOWSPEEDER: The latest in the LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series, the #75144 LEGO Star Wars UCS Snowspeeder is currently available for LEGO VIP members, and will be available to the general public on May 4th at official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop. After a couple of controversial offerings in the LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series, the LEGO Star Wars UCS Snowspeeder is a very solid set with great upgrades and lots of authentic details. You can find it under the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO STAR WARS STORE EVENTS: Besides the LEGO Star Wars promotions and the new LEGO Star Wars UCS set, there are also going to be some special events at official LEGO stores. All three of the activities mentioned here are restricted to ages 6-14. The first event runs from April 24-June 25th, where kids can take part in the Rebel Alliance by building vehicles, aircrafts or droids for the LEGO Star Wars Rebel Base Camp at their local LEGO store. By taking a photo of their creation and uploading it to the LEGO Life mobile app, kids will also receive wearable Yoda ears (while supplies last). On May 4th there are two events. All day kids can come in dressed as their favorite Star Wars character, and complete the search and find activity to earn wearable Yoda ears. At 5 PM there is going to be a minifigure speed build challenge with the fastest builder getting a free minifigure. This activity may require prior registration, so make sure you check with your local LEGO store.

As you can see, there are quite a few specials and activities for LEGO Star Wars fan, but even if you are not into Star Wars, you can take advantage of the second freebie offer to get some of the other sets that you like from the large wave of new sets we recently got, including LEGO Super Heroes, LEGO Minecraft, LEGO Elves, LEGO Technic, LEGO Speed Champions, LEGO Classic, and LEGO Brickheadz. You can find them all under the New Sets section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Exciting month! And there are some other news sets you didn’t list, like the Cars sets, the Wonder Woman set, and Series 17.

    • admin May 1, 2017, 3:44 PM

Yes, those are available too! They were not yet listed when I wrote up this post, so I wasn’t 100% sure if they will be added today. 😀

The new Cars sets look so much better than the previous ones! I might get a few. R2-D2 looks great. I assume the dome is a new printed piece?

    • admin May 1, 2017, 3:45 PM

Yes, the R2-D2 head is a larger 4×4 printed dome piece. It’s a nice little build. I think we should talk about the Cars sets separately, as there are so many of them. I will put it on the list to write a review. 🙂

I am a LEGO meltdown . I can’t decide what I want ? I have a almost ten year old Y-wing but, I don’t know if it’s worth the price to get it . The other sets are kinda scattered across the board. The battle on Scarfif doesn’t have a lot they ( an less you have some of the sets from the first wave . You can build on that ). So, I don’t know what I ‘m going to do ? I don’t want to walk away with nothing. I even went to the LEGO store to get some ideas ( nothing). The Yoda Jedi starfighter and the Duel on Naboo can go together because there both still in the clone wars era. What’s your thoughts on the matter?

    • admin May 1, 2017, 4:09 PM

Please don’t have a meltdown over LEGO. It’s not worth it. 😉

Are you thinking about shopping because you want the R2-D2 set? Or just because Star Wars Day is coming up? If you don’t care for any of the current sets, it is perfectly fine to wait it out. You could get R2-D2 on eBay or BrickLink, and wait for wave of sets that interest you more. It’s not worth shopping just because there is a special going on.

If you already have the earlier Y-wing, the new one is really not that much different. You could make most of those modifications on your own, if you want to. I personally really don’t like the Naboo set. The play-features are a joke, and the set doesn’t look very good. I like Yoda’s Starfighter though, but I’m a fan of Jedi Starfighters in general. Again, if you are only planning to shop because of R2-D2, wait a couple of weeks, and there will be plenty of them on eBay and BrickLink, and the price shouldn’t be that bad. It’s a neat little set.

Hope this helps some. Let me know if you have any other thoughts on the matter. I’m back from vacation, so will be around. 🙂

I think I have a plan. I think I ‘ll get the Starscavenger and Yoda’s Jedi Starfighter. A lot of the other sets are in other stores , like the Desert skiff escape. It looks different than the one I got a few years a go that had Jedi Luke Sky walker. ( I ‘ll get that later). So, wish me luck. What’s your thoughts on the Phantom?

    • admin May 1, 2017, 7:59 PM

That sounds like a plan! I like the Starscavenger too. The Phantom has a unique color-scheme that makes it really stand out amongst the mostly white, gray, and black Star Wars ships. So that’s a nice change. Unfortunately, on this updated model the color is achieved by stickers, not brick-built techniques. And white stickers on white pieces usually don’t age well. When a set is new, white stickers match the white pieces well. But as LEGO ages, white starts to yellow, while the stickers remain white, so they don’t look very good.

  • Legostuff71 May 1, 2017, 9:18 PM

Yeah, I noticed . As well as the sticker stops sticking . The only reason why I would want the phantom is thrawn mini fig, but, I try and stay with my rules . One , try not to buy mini figs you already have ( of course with a few exceptions . Like I can never have enough Yoda’s .) I also have to keep in mind that these are new sets and I don’t have to buy it all in one shot . ” patients one must have. ” as Yoda would say.

    • admin May 2, 2017, 1:45 PM

LOL! Yeah, lots of Yodas will keep the Force in balance with all the dark stuff going on! 😀

  • Legostuff71 May 2, 2017, 8:43 AM

………and what’s your thoughts on the Star Wars build able figures? ( I don’t have any , but, curious.)

    • admin May 2, 2017, 1:49 PM

Hm… personally I don’t care for them, but I do like the interesting parts they introduced. I’m always looking for parts for greebling. This is sort of the same opinion I have about all the large buildable figures (Bionicle, Hero Factory, Chima, etc.). The new buildable figures are definitely a vast improvement over the old Bionicle system. It’s really up to personal taste. I don’t have room for such large figures, but I know many people who really like them. The only large figures I have are from the old Castle Kingdoms line. I liked their silver and copper speckled armor, however they fall apart if you just look at them wrong. 🙄

    Hi there,

May I know how to get a VIP card for the lego shop?

    • Håkan May 2, 2017, 1:14 PM

I think you just have to register for it.
And maybe be over 18 years of age.

      • admin May 2, 2017, 1:53 PM

Yes, that’s pretty much it. One thing I’m not sure about is if they send you a physical card if you sign up online or over the phone. I opened my VIP account at a LEGO store years ago, and they gave me a card, but I don’t know if they send you a card in the mail if you sign up remotely. The only thing important is the account number associated with the card, but it’s cool to have the card too for bragging rights. 🙄

    • admin May 2, 2017, 1:51 PM

You can just call LEGO’s customer service to open an account. You don’t actually need a physical card, although it’s nice to have, because it looks cool. 😀

      • Håkan May 2, 2017, 8:12 PM

Yeah. I got the card in the Copenhagen store.

        • PrashBricks May 4, 2017, 5:48 AM

Ok thank you for the information, I might try to get one sooner or later…

  • Legostuff71 May 3, 2017, 8:50 AM

I wonder if I Should check out Amazon, and see if LEGO Star Wars sets are going to be on sale? I live in California and it’s going to be in the 90’s and I take the bus. ( let alone walking a mile to the bus stop . To and from.) I’ll just take lots of water .

    • admin May 3, 2017, 3:53 PM

Oh, yes, I know your part of the world! Hot and dry! I lived in Arizona for three years and hated it. Visited California a few times too, but it wasn’t much better. I need green… lots of green. The Online LEGO Shop is going to have some sales going on starting tomorrow, so between them and Amazon, you should find something. We will talk about it more tomorrow, and can help each other out finding good deals. 🙂
