LEGO Creator Palace Cinema getting retired

The #10232 LEGO Creator Palace Cinema, the 8th in the LEGO Modular Buildings line, has been around since 2013, and it looks like LEGO felt it was time for it to retire. If you haven’t gotten the set yet, but would like to add it to your collection, I highly recommend you get it right away, as it will be retiring soon. Below is the message LEGO recently shared on their Facebook page, as well as a bit more info about the set. 🙂

Here is the post from LEGO’s FB page: “Don’t miss the last screening at the Palace Cinema before the lights go down for the last time. This icon of any modular street corner will be retired soon; so get your tickets for cinema classics like Forever Sorting and The Brick Separator now.”

LEGO traditionally retires the oldest LEGO Modular Building amongst the currently available sets right around August/September, before a new model gets added to the collection at the beginning of the following year. Retiring a set means that LEGO is not making any more, and whatever stock is left will be sold until all the sets are gone. In the case of most of the previous LEGO Modular Buildings, the remaining sets sold out so fast that it caught people by surprise and they had to turn to the secondary market to purchase them for much higher prices. The currently available LEGO Modular Buildings are as follows:

  • #10232 LEGO Creator Palace Cinema – released in 2013 – retiring this  year after a long and successful run.
  • #10243 LEGO Creator Parisian Restaurant – released in 2014 – I expect this set to be around even past 2018, as it is one of the most popular buildings in the collection.
  • #10246 LEGO Creator Detective’s Office – released in 2015 – this is another popular set, so it should be available until at least 2019.
  • #10251 LEGO Creator Brick Bank – released in 2016 – this is the smallest, weakest and least talked about set from the current line-up, so perhaps it might get retired earlier than the usual four-year run. It is still very nice though, especially on the inside, and it one of only three corner buildings.
  • #10255 LEGO Creator Assembly Square – released in 2017 – this is the largest LEGO Modular Building to date, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the collection. It should be around until 2021, although it might get retired earlier due to the higher price-tag (and thus less units selling).

Going back to the #10232 LEGO Creator Palace Cinema, it is somewhere in the middle between the earliest LEGO Modular Buildings, with detailed exteriors, sparse interiors, and taller overall size, and the recent Modulars that are shorter, but are much more detailed on the inside and outside. The Palace Cinema looks great on the outside with colorful (and interchangeable!) posters and other details, but the inside could use a bit of extra decor. And, it is the only LEGO Modular Building with stickers (movie posters, signs, movie screen). It is also one of only three corner buildings, which makes it very useful to turn at the corner, or finish off a street. As you can see, there are some plusses and minuses to this set, but overall it is a well-liked Modular. Below, I have included the official description as well as a video-review, so you can see all the details. And if you want to purchase it, it’s available at the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.

It’s premiere night at the Palace Cinema! Illuminate the night sky with the spotlights as the child star arrives in a fancy black limousine! Gather the crowd on the star-studded sidewalk, then head into the detailed lobby with a concession stand and ticket area! Take the grand staircase into the theater with a large screen, movie projector and reclining chairs for 6 minifigures. Introducing the latest addition to the LEGO Modular Buildings series, the highly detailed, 2-story Palace Cinema corner building. This collectible model features a sidewalk of the stars, brick-built entrance doors, posters, sign frontage, a tower with spires and rooftop decorations. Includes 6 minifigures: child star, chauffeur, female guest, male guest, photographer and cinema worker. Palace Cinema measures 15″ (38cm) high, 10″ (25.5cm) wide, and 10″ (25.5cm) deep. 2,194 pieces. Price: $149.99 – BUY HERE

What do you think? How do you like the LEGO Creator Palace Cinema? Do you have it already? Or are you planning to get it before it is retired and sold out? Which one is your favorite LEGO Modular Building so far? Feel free to share your thoughts and own review in the comment section below! 😉

Thanks for posting this. I was thinking of getting one or two before it gets retired. It’s a little sparse inside, but looks very good on the outside, and I like the fact that the posters can be changed. Ninjago City has some extra posters that could be used also.

Admin, I hope you are safe and will get back soon. Will has been updating us. So thanks to both of you.

I’ve been wanting to have the extra money to buy a few extra copies of any modular, but in recent years all the BIG sets that have been coming out are really draining my bank account.

That Ninjago City costs two of these Cinemas!

I’m just hoping we see a little reduction in price. Hopefully…maybe. Please.

Safety first. On the cinema, I think it looks better in build (love the roof) than in the picture. Also, how could one live as a Lego builder without “Forever Sorting” Lighting it up (BrickLoot) really adds a lot, too. The BrickLoot lighting for the bank really really makes the model, imho. And, no, I do not work for Brickloot, but I am really glad I decided to experiment with lighting

That is a great one to light up.

I know the Admin and I are going to be trying out the I-Brix lighting system. It’s not out yet but scheduled for December to its Kickstarter backers. Not sure how much longer after that before it becomes available retail.

Glad you found a lighting system that works for you.

I’ve tried a couple others. I almost liked using EL Wire. It makes a really great neon sign, but is a bit dim in the illumination department.

For those wondering, the admin is still okay. Unfortunately the utility workers in charge of restoring power have just been surveying up to this point. Hopefully they’ll start actually fixing things soon.

The airport is up and operational so the Admin will get a break next week and take the trip up to Canada to meet with Mega. 😀

I thinking of getting the palace cinema, but, I already have the town plan set that came with a cinema in it and it works fine with what I have. I to am hoping that LEGO would drop there prices on sets alittle( or a lot) and that the sale drop would give them enough of a warning to scale back a little. Hang in there Admin, and yes it would be great for you to get away for A while . Be safe and my thoughts are with you.

I recall that city plan. That was a pretty awesome series.

If you do get the Palace Cinema you could always consider the two theaters competition. Or maybe they specialize in different theatrical releases?

I know after a while it gets tough justifying getting some sets when all it is is a diferent version of what you already have.

There’s also the question of space for everything…

  • Will September 13, 2017, 6:38 PM

So got some news from the Admin.

Power is still down, but they are no longer trapped. Flooding in the city and nearby cities is becoming a real problem since the water ways aren’t quite equipped to handle the amount of flooding.

Currently the Admin is safe from the flooding issue, but they know many friends in their area that are in trouble.

I’ll keep you posted if I hear any more.

It just occurred to me, that the palace cinema has an asian look to and it might work with my NINJAGO / city set up.almost like a transition from NINJAGO to city look.

    • Will September 14, 2017, 12:44 AM

It’s not a bad idea. Plus if you put up a Ninjago Movie poster in the Palace Cinema it would blend even better.

You could also go a different direction and throw the Parisian Restaurant in there and say you have a multicultural center with French, Japanese, and Chinese. And the pool hall in the Detective’s Office is called the Highlander, so maybe some Scottish?

Any way you slice it you’ve got options. Oooow, need to make a MOC of a pizzeria! Then you got Italy!

Yeah, slightly. I think the style is meant to be, or approximate, 1920’s Art Deco …

The hellicarrier is being retired soon as well. I’d also expect the Silent Mary to have a limited run and be retired next year. The Batcace which did not do as well is on its way out. And good bye to Hoth which was not well received. Additionally, Lego sold 16,000 UCS milleniaks Falcons within hours of the VIP release yesterday.
