LEGO Old Fishing Store interview & review

One of the most charming and universally praised LEGO set that was released at the beginning of the month is the #21310 LEGO Ideas Old Fishing Store. Designed by LEGO fan Robert Bontenbal, it quickly achieved 10k public votes, and was chosen by the LEGO Ideas team to be the next set in the collection of fan-designed models. We have talked about the set a couple times already (see: LEGO Ideas Old Fishing Store Details and LEGO Ideas Old Fishing Store More Details). 🙂

Today, I thought to share with you a couple of videos that I think you will find interesting in regards to the set. The first one is an interview with LEGO fan designer Robert Bontenbal, where he shares some details and background information about his model, and the experience of working with LEGO’s own designer Adam Grabowski, who made sure that the project lived up to the quality requirements for an official LEGO set. The interview is about 25 minutes long, and it’s a bit slow at the beginning, but get’s more interesting as Robert answers questions about the set. It’s worth a watch.

The second video is a full review of the #21310 LEGO Ideas Old Fishing Store by JANGBRiCKS. JANG shows you every detail of the set, as well as the minifigures. If you would like to take a good look at the set both inside and outside – especially if you are considering buying it – the review should be very helpful. This video is only about 10 minutes long.

The LEGO Ideas Old Fishing Store is undoubtedly a wonderful display piece as you can see in the video-review above, but there is another aspect of the set worth mentioning; the great number of very useful parts and colors. The set comes with 2,049 pieces, making it the largest (and most expensive) LEGO Ideas set to date. The model sits on a 32×32 baseplate in tan (always great to have!), and there are also a good number of tan window-frames and door-frames (three 2×2, nine 4×4, and two 4×6). Olive-green is a color that LEGO fans always want to have more of. Here you get thirty-seven 1×1 plates, twenty 1×1 bricks, twenty-two 1×2 masonry-bricks, six 2×2 plates, eleven 1×4 bricks, two 1×8 bricks, and five 1×1 round tiles. The set is also a great source of sand-green parts, with over one hundred 1×2 tiles, thirty-five 1×3 tiles, and eighty-three 1×4 tiles. Yet another color that is great for buildings and landscaping is nougat. Fourteen 1×1 tiles, eleven 1×2 tiles, seven 1×4 plates, and thirty (yes, thirty!) 1×4 tiles with wood-grain printing are included. Other useful pieces and colors worth highlighting are twelve dark-brown 1×4 tiles, sixteen dark-orange tiles with stud on the side, and a good number of plates and tiles in dark-tan (including seventeen 1×3 tiles with wood-grain printing). And, of course, you get plenty of regular brown, light and dark-gray pieces, as well as some other colors in smaller quantities. To summarize, this set is a great resource for landscaping and for building rustic houses!

Here is official description of the set: Find all the gear you need for a fantastic fishing trip at the Old Fishing Store! Walk up the steps from the beach into the shop selling fishing rods, hooks, harpoons, diving equipment, oxygen tanks and much more. Climb the ladder to the top of the watchtower and look through the telescope to enjoy the view. Then relax and read the newspaper in the office. Just make sure the cat or seagulls don’t eat the freshly caught fish hanging outside! The Old Fishing Store is ideal for display and role-play, this model has 2 removable roofs, an opening back wall in the shop for easy access, 4 minifigures, cat and 3 seagull figures, as well as loads of other cool details and elements to fire up the imagination. 2,049 pieces. Price: $149.99 – BUY HERE

If you would like to own this set, I recommend that you get it as soon as possible. LEGO Ideas sets are made in limited quantities, and they are not available for very long. If you are considering getting it for Christmas, I still recommend buying it now, and then just putting it aside until the holidays. It is very likely that the set will be gone by then. Please don’t set yourself up for disappointment. See the LEGO Ideas section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? How do you like the LEGO Ideas Old Fishing Store? Do you have it already? Or are you planning to get it? Feel free to share your thoughts and own review in the comment section below! 😉

Are you guys affected by the hurricane? I know admin lives in Florida. Admin, are you still with us?

    • admin September 9, 2017, 4:41 PM

Yes, I’m here. Boarding up windows this afternoon. We are as prepared as possible. According to the latest forecast, our area will get Monday morning. If you don’t hear from me on Monday, it means we have no electricity and/or internet.

      • rainey September 9, 2017, 9:02 PM

I didn’t realize. Sending you good thoughts!!!!

        • admin September 9, 2017, 9:56 PM

Thanks! All we can do is wait it out. Our house is one story concrete block, so it’s fairly sturdy, and we got a new roof less than a year ago, after two huge trees crashed through our roof during stormy weather two weeks apart from each other hitting the exact same spot. 🙄

We are in Central Florida, which is usually more sheltered from hurricanes, but occasionally a more determined one gives us a visit. The worst hurricane I experienced in our area was Frances in 2004. It was very-very scary. We didn’t have any major damage, but the rest of our neighborhood was bad. A very old lady lives around the corner from us, who lived in our neighborhood her whole life. She said that that was the second worst hurricane she experienced. The current forecast for Irma is worst, but things can still change. We are waiting until tomorrow morning to find out.

I keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers that things will be o k for you. Yes, I want that old fishing shop. That’s on my early, early Christmas list. I was at the LEGO store today and saw an interesting little city set but, with only city pieces in it ( little Fountain, a parking Booth and some park accessories). I thought that it was kinda a cool little set . It would go great with my city stuff.

    • Håkan September 9, 2017, 8:49 PM

Ah, yeah, I recall that one…

      https://brickset.com/sets/40170-1/Build-My-City-Accessory-Set

Unfortunately, just about every one of the special parts have a sticker to apply…

      • admin September 9, 2017, 9:47 PM

Oh, yes! That’s the set I was thinking of! 😀

    • admin September 9, 2017, 9:46 PM

I remember reading about that set somewhere. I think it was on Brickset or something. It was called a City Accessory set or something like that.

As far as Irma, we got plywood sheets today (it was really hard to find them as stores were selling out fast!), and I spent the afternoon cutting them to size for all the windows. We will wait until tomorrow morning for the latest update, as once Irma pulls away from Cuba is when it will be more clear what direction she is taking. So far she has been moving more West than anyone predicted.

I was all ready to buy it this past week and then I saw that there’s a double points event coming up at the beginning of Oct. So I’m waiting for now. But I’ll be on it like white on rice once I can get 2X VIP.

    • admin September 9, 2017, 9:59 PM

Hm… you are going to wait? Ideas sets are limited release, so it’s a gamble, but hopefully LEGO learned their lesson from the Saturn V fiasco, and made enough Fishing Stores. I would suggest to keep an eye on it between now and October. If you see it go out of stock, it might be worth ordering it right away. Backorders are fulfilled on a first come first serve basis.

      • rainey September 10, 2017, 6:22 PM

OK You scared me. I’m going to get it tomorrow.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you. It will be a relief when you can come back on and say you rode it out. …I hope without destruction.

  • Legostuff71 September 9, 2017, 9:10 PM

Yeah, I know. The way LEGO does city a lot ,you would think that shouldn’t be necessary. LEGO has already taken a Financial hit, it my be small one but a hit is a hit. I hope there will be some improvements soon. ( I know a small set like that doesn’t count . But, the bigger sets do .)

    • Håkan September 10, 2017, 10:39 AM

I don’t think it was a financial hit, per se, just a realization that the gains were smaller than what was expected.

  • PrashBricks III September 10, 2017, 6:02 AM

Is it also possible to buy it on bricklink??? I mean, cheaper… 😉

    • Håkan September 10, 2017, 3:08 PM

Not likely, many parts that are quite rare, and new prints, stickers and recolors that would warrant a higher pricing…

Maybe if you’d decided on a recolor in gray and tan or something…

  • Will September 10, 2017, 1:52 PM

Looks like the hurricane is moving west. Hopefully that means the admin’s house will be safe.

Yes, you can always buy on Bricklink, but ever since about two or three years back the LEGO Group stopped allowing discounts on the high end priced sets. Not exactly sure if that applies to LEgO Ideas since until recently those sets haven’t been $100+.

Ultimately the downside is the secondary markets have a tough time dipping below retail price because there is no profit in it.

I’m actually thinking that might be some of the areas LEGO is seeing declines. Thanks to the LEGO Movie and LEGO Batman Movie they’ve been gaining on family purchases. Historically those aren’t the $100+ sets. Since hardcore fans are the main market for these and there are no real price breaks then what you end up with is a lot of overstock that doesn’t move. Nevermind, that these sets have some of the biggest profit margins so can stand to be discounted.

So the response is to make fewer, but then you have a Saturn Rocket situation. It will be interesting to see if they did the same thing with the Old Fishing Store. I think the one reason why you might be able to wait is the announcement of the new UCS Millennium Falcon. Those who are buying it will have to not buy other things to stay within budget.

Still if you do wait make sure to buy in the first few hours the double points go live. I think that’s where we’l see things get sold out.

UPDATE: We just lost power due to the hurricane, so I will be absent for a while. Huge winds after midnight tonight, and pretty much all day tomorrow. Windows are boarded and we have food, water, flashlights, etc. I will be back when I can…

    • Su September 10, 2017, 7:46 PM

      Praying for you!!!

  • Legostuff71 September 10, 2017, 8:14 PM

I have God on Speed dial! Hang in there.

  • Will September 10, 2017, 9:36 PM

    Hi all,

Just got an email from the admin. Looks like the hurricane will hit so the admin will definitely be quiet for a while. The hurricane is scheduled to last all day on Monday.

Now the admin does have an emergency connection, but that only works if the cell towers are up. So hopefully as soon as the admin can reach out we’ll know.

Needless to say, new posts will be postponed until the hurricane passes. All our prayers are with the Admin at this time.

    Will

  • Legostuff71 September 10, 2017, 9:47 PM

Thanks Will for the update . Admin are in my thoughts and prayers.

I just got around to building my fishing store set (It’s been a busy fall). The build wasn’t very challenging, but I liked the roof construction and all of the little details. It really is packed.

With Robert now having 5 of his creations in this genre getting 10,000 votes (3 of which are part of the current review period), I’m very interested in seeing what LEGO does with this series. Clearly, there is great fan interest, and I know I would love to have all of the sets in the series. Maybe LEGO will partner with Robert like they did with Adam Reed Tucker for the architecture series. Do you have any thoughts on this?

    • admin November 24, 2017, 11:10 AM

Su, that’s actually my hope as well. However, I have not heard anything directly from LEGO in regards to collaborating with Robert. I think we might know something when the results from the next review period are announced. Whether LEGO decides to release the entire series will heavily depend on how well the Fishing Store performs. If it sells well, LEGO could very well release the rest of the series. We shall see… I will definitely write an update if I hear something. 🙂
