LEGO Star Wars Freighter Wars contest

To celebrate the upcoming release of the new #75192 LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector’s Series Millennium Falcon, and to have a little fun, LEGO is running a new contest for teen and adult LEGO fans at their ReBrick website, called LEGO Star Wars Freighter Wars Contest! In this contest, participants are invited to build their own YT Corellian light freighter – also known as the make and model of the iconic Millennium Falcon! Build your version of the freighter with the iconic disk shape and you could win the #75192 LEGO Star Wars UCS Millennium Falcon signed by the designer, and some other great prizes! Details below. 🙂

LEGO STAR WARS CONTEST – OVERVIEW: Build your Star Wars YT Corellian Light Freighter in the Freighter Wars contest! What is a YT Corellian light freighter, you ask? You might recognize one very famous one, the Millennium Falcon! Han Solo says she’s “not much to look at” but the Millennium Falcon has worked its way into our hearts. Now it’s your chance to pay homage to the iconic freighter by building your own YT Corellian light freighter in any size or scale you wish. Remember, this isn’t the Millennium Falcon you’re building, just the same type of ship, so channel your own intergalactic smuggler and make some modifications!

LEGO STAR WARS CONTEST – HOW TO ENTER: In this contest, LEGO ask you to build your own YT Corellian light freighter with the iconic disk shape of the Millennium Falcon. Build your YT Corellian light freighter, either using LEGO bricks or a digital LEGO building tool such as LEGO Digital Designer. Take up to five photos of your creation and submit them to the contest. Make sure to show off all angles of your creation. Use the description field to describe your model – then hit “submit”. When you receive a “Success!” pop-up notification after clicking “submit” on the entry submission page, your entry has successfully been submitted. The ReBrick moderation team will review it within 1-3 working days to make sure it fits all the contest rules.

LEGO STAR WARS CONTEST – RULES: Your entry must be easily identifiable as a YT Corellian light freighter. Your entry cannot be the Millennium Falcon, although it can resemble the Millennium Falcon. If your entry closely resembles the Millennium Falcon, please state the differences in your entry’s description or as a comment on your entry. Entries consisting of or containing copies of any existing third party work or creation or infringements of any third party intellectual property right will not be eligible for the contest. Use of any brick parts not produced by the LEGO Group will result in your entry being disqualified. Entries can be previously built, but cannot be submitted previously in any contest of any kind. Entry photos should show your creation only, and should not show recognizable features of any person or any commercial product other than those of the LEGO Group and Star Wars. Entries must not contain LEGO elements which have been modified from their original form, including painted or cut elements. Entrants must be at least 13 years of age at the time of entry. You can read the rest of the entry guidelines and rules here.

LEGO STAR WARS CONTEST – DEADLINE: You must submit your entry by October 11th, 2017 at 10:00 AM EST. If you are not sure what time zone you are in, you can use an online time-zone converter to make sure you don’t miss the deadline.

LEGO STAR WARS CONTEST – JUDGES: A representative of the LEGO Star Wars team and James Burns from JediNews will select the grand prize winner and two runner ups. They will judge entries upon: overall coolness and originality – 25%, most inspired details – 25%, relevance to the look and feel of the Star Wars YT Corellian light freighter – 25%, best use of LEGO elements – 25%.

LEGO STAR WARS CONTEST – PRIZES: One grand prize winner will receive the #75192 LEGO Star Wars UCS Millennium Falcon signed by the designer, the #6176782 LEGO Star Wars Escape the Space Slug set, exclusive artwork signed by artists from Lucasfilm, and a certificate of winning. Oh! What an awesome contest! Just to clarify, what it exactly a YT Corellian light freighter? It says it can’t be like the Falcon, but the Falcon is the only one we know in this class.

Do a search for the corellian in google images. You’ll find lots of great concept art. It seems like the majority have a round body, but the front and cockpit vary greatly. I’m getting some great ideas and may even enter! If you have one of the smaller falcons already, it shouldn’t be that difficult to mod it for the contest.

I just did a search myself, and you are right. Some great concept art there! 😀

    Tempting. Very tempting…

This is an intriguing choice for a contest. YT-class Corellian freighters are known within the Star Wars universe to often have weird shapes, so there are options for style – assuming the “YT Corellian Light Freighter” title suggests you can build any ship in that class and not only YT-1300 Light Freighters (which is the Falcon’s original make). In any case, the prizes are just amazing…. I would enter this, but at present I don’t have enough time to build anything. 😕
I also question the rules again, particularly that standard clause, “Entries consisting of … any existing third party work … or … any third party intellectual property right will not be eligible for the contest.” Does this include Star Wars? Because the rules also state: “Your entry must be easily identifiable as a YT Corellian light freighter.” So… the contest is based on a third party and requires resemblance to third party work, but you can’t enter models based on a third party. This logic is flawless. 🙄
Also, I found this video the other day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNCc6uqa9sU That end scene was the best part. 🙂 But does this mean they will reveal what happened to Wu over the winter, or will Season 8 of the show cover that? And I see they’re still pushing LEGO Life as well….

I took that rule to mean that Star Wars was okay in this case, because later in the rules it says this: “Entry photos should show your creation only, and should not show recognizable features of any person or any commercial product other than those of the LEGO Group and Star Wars.”

LOL! That video was funny. I don’t know why they keep pushing that LEGO Life app. It’s just so lame. Of course, I’m not part of the target audience, but every kid I talked to said the same. End they want the LEGO Club Magazine back. However, it seems that LEGO is really in love with the app. They even mentioned it in their recent half-year report as a product they want to continue to push. 😕 ❓

      • BLProductions September 8, 2017, 9:48 AM

Interesting, I missed that later line. I guess my unmodified YT-1300 Corellian Light Freighter MOC idea can move forward…. 😉
I know nothing about the LEGO Life app, but if kids are saying it’s bad, then the app needs to be fixed or it will fail. I just glanced through the half-year report and saw that mention of it; I wonder how successful “our successful platform” is.
And about that half-year report: they lose 3 percent in profit (profit, mind you; they’re not losing anything they had, just not gaining as much as before), and they feel the need to “reset” the company? They must know something we don’t that such an action was necessary. Are they predicting this is the beginning of LEGO’s decline? I know little about businesses, but I would say DKK 3.4 billion profit is pretty good. 😕

Capitalism is based on the idea of exponential growth…

Another reason why I’m rather wary of the system…

        • admin September 8, 2017, 10:30 AM

A lot of people are wondering about that report. LEGO had some incredible last few years, and they are still the #1 toy maker, making insane amount of money. Why they had to take such drastic steps because their half-year report said they made a little less profit seems unusual. Especially since LEGO always makes the most profit during the second half of the year due to the holiday season. Also, changing CEOs twice a year is pretty strange too. As you said, there are probably some things they don’t say and we don’t know. What I did find most concerning is that they are planning to put their attention on digital or partially digital products (LEGO Life and LEGO BOOST were specifically mentioned). These mixed products never worked for LEGO. They always did much better when they focused on their core niche, which is building bricks. There are lots of good and thoughtful comments on the article at Brickset, if you are interested to hear different opinions. But overall, yes, it’s all very strange…

          • BLProductions September 8, 2017, 5:01 PM

I read (on Brickset) that Bali Padda was only meant to be a temporary CEO, and it was the plan for Niels to replace him anyways. I don’t know how true that is, though. Either way, LEGO is making some strange decisions this year.
I do wonder if LEGO focusing on Life and BOOST will not make those things successful. Maybe the older attempts at digital products failed because LEGO didn’t do enough with them, and an effort to broaden the appeal of Life and BOOST will keep those alive. Currently, though, if LEGO Life is bad and BOOST is limited in usability, I don’t see them growing.
I did read through some of the Brickset comments (there’s a forum thread on this, too), and there are indeed many good thoughts there. Those are mostly speculation, though, since we don’t know the full story. Many people at LEGO probably don’t even know the full story….

            • admin September 8, 2017, 5:19 PM

I also read the comments on both the main article and the forum discussion. One thing I clearly remember is that when Bali Padda was appointed as CEO, it never mentioned that his position was only temporary. So, even that part is just speculation. But yeah, at this point all we can do is hope that they are making the right decisions.

I don’t see how LEGO Life could be a main product. I have tried it out a few times and it is lame. Even the LEGO Club and LEGO Forum (which is what LEGO Life replaced and were much better than LEGO Life) was never a focal point. And LEGO BOOST is still very new to get a sense of how people like it.

I do agree with people’s comments that LEGO seems to be all over the place, focusing on things that have little to do with their core product. Too many games, too much digital stuff, too many licenses, too many huge sets, too many new parts, huge new factory in China, LEGO House, etc. It appears to be the exact same mistake they made in the past. 😕

              • Håkan September 9, 2017, 3:58 AM

The idea is probably that digital is the future, and the way to go.

Of course’ you’d still need a good product to sell…

Does anyone except me know that the millenium falcon isn’t the only released YT Corellian light freighter?

There was a set in 2013 about the old republic, which was a dark red YT Corellian light freighter. (Does anyone remember it’s number or name?)

So everyone telling that the millenium falcon is the only YT Corellian light freighter we have seen made out of lego, is not right at all.

    • admin September 8, 2017, 11:18 AM

Hm… I don’t remember such a set, but I did look through the Brickset database of the 2013 releases. The only one that somewhat matches your description is the #75025 Jedi Defender Class Cruiser, which was made by the Corellians, but it is not a YT-series. According to the Star Wars wiki, “the YT-series was a fairly popular series of light freighters produced by Corellian Engineering Corporation. Sometime prior to 29 BBY, Raith Sienar had been subcontracted to give the entire series an overhaul. Ships in the YT series featured a saucer-shaped hull, and were popular among smugglers for their easy customization.”

And here is the info about the Jedi Defender Cruiser: “The Defender-class light corvette was produced by the Rendili Vehicle Corporation for the Jedi Order during the Great Galactic War between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire. Manufactured on Corellia, the Defender-class light corvette was modeled after a similar consumer corvette that was inspired by the Republic Military’s Thranta-class corvette, but the Defender-class was modified specifically for use by Jedi as a mobile operations base and a capable starfighter in its own right.”

I’m not an expert on the subject, but it seems like the YT-series needs to have the round body. If you look at images of the YT Corellian, they all have that feature. The Jedi Defender is a completely different shape.

      • BLProductions September 8, 2017, 5:26 PM

The Jedi Defender Class Cruiser was definitely not a YT-class freighter. It’s not even a freighter; it’s a corvette. If anything, it is more closely related to Republic Cruisers and Corellian Corvettes (aka Blockade Runners). Since the Millennium Falcon is the only YT-class ship to appear in the Star Wars movies and cartoons (that I know of), there have been no other LEGO sets of YT-class ships.
It is worth noting, though, that the Falcon is not the only LEGO set based on a Corellian Engineering Corporation design. The Ghost (from the Rebels TV show) is a modified VCX-100 Light Freighter, which was also manufactured by the CEC (hence its somewhat similar design to the Falcon), and in 2014 it was released in LEGO as #75053. However, I don’t think the ReBrick contest extends to all CEC designs – just the YT-class freighters. 😕

        • admin September 8, 2017, 8:58 PM

On the LEGO Ambassador forum the same question came up, and LEGO ReBrick representative said the following: “The Star Wars team only stated that it should be a YT Corellian light freighter – any models are far game!” So, it appears that the YT-class part is important. Not just any ship made by Corellians.
