LEGO Ideas Voltron set announcement

Back in August 2017, LEGO announced that a forthcoming LEGO Ideas set will be based upon the super robot from the classic Voltron: Defender of the Universe television series. The model was originally designed and submitted to the LEGO Ideas platform by Leandro Tayag (a.k.a len_d69), a software architect from the Philippines (you can learn more about Leandro in this interview at the LEGO Ideas blog). The project was very popular on LEGO Ideas and it received 10k votes in just three weeks! Now, after many months of working on the final design of the model, LEGO finally revealed the official #21311 LEGO Ideas Voltron set, which will be released later this year. See details below. 🙂

Here is the official description of the set: Let’s go Voltron force in LEGO style! It’s time to defend the universe so get ready to form the #21311 LEGO Ideas Voltron, the biggest buildable LEGO mech ever! Activate interlocks! Dynotherms connected! Infracells up! Megathrusters are go! This awesome set features buildable and highly posable black, blue, yellow, red, and green lions with specially designed, extra-strong joints to combine them all and create the Voltron super robot, plus a huge sword and shield that attach firmly to Voltron’s hands. Form feet and legs with the blue and yellow lions. Form arms with the red and green lions. And form torso and head with the mighty black lion. Then grab the super robot’s huge sword and shield and form Voltron to defend the universe! • Pose the head, shoulders, arms and wrists of Voltron (legs are not posable).
  • Also includes a sword and shield (each with silver-colored elements) that attach firmly to Voltron’s hands.
  • Includes a booklet with building instructions, plus information about the set’s fan creator and super force of LEGO designers.

For more details, please visit the LEGO Ideas section of the Online LEGO Shop.

After so much waiting for this set, it’s great to see the finished model. It’s interesting to compare the final design to the original submission to spot the similarities and differences. Below, I have included a couple of pictures for comparison, and you can see more images of the original submission at this LEGO Ideas page.

Whether you are into Voltron or not, this looks like an awesome mech with lots of options for customization. I’m really happy to see the number of excellent mechs LEGO has been releasing in recent years, and looks like Voltron is another worthy addition to the lineup. While we are waiting for the release of the #21311 LEGO Ideas Voltron set, you might also want to take a look at the other fan-submitted LEGO sets at the LEGO Ideas section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? How do you like the LEGO Ideas Voltron set? Are you looking forward to it? How do you think it compares to the original submission? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

Lego has been releasing all our childhood favorites, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, E.T. Star Wars, Scooby Doo, and now Voltron. It can’t get better than this!

Guys, those of you who are not familiar with Voltron, it’s playing on Netflix. It’s cool. I really like how this set turned out. And the price is really good too!

It’s still $180, but I agree the price is amazing for a licensed set of over 2300 pieces. Are the decorations stickers? Or printed? Ideas sets are always printed, right?

      • admin June 28, 2018, 11:51 AM

I’m looking at the high-resolution images LEGO sent me, and it appears that set has both printing and stickers. The numbers on the lions are definitely stickers, but Voltron’s mouth, and the printing on the round 2×2 tiles at the joints are prints.

I’d be really surprised if those were stickers in the final model, it would be the first Ideas set to have stickers I think.

          • admin June 28, 2018, 12:31 PM

I’m certain that the numbers are stickers as I have the final high-res images. The Fishing Store also has both stickers and printed pieces, so it is not a new concept.

Wow! This is awesome! And more than a foot high! That’s taller than Kai’s Fire Mech from the Ninjago movie! I just wish it came with minifigs.

    • BigShawn June 28, 2018, 12:01 PM

The minifigs wouldn’t be in scale with Voltron, but I agree, they could have included them just as a separate lineup.

  • brickmaster June 28, 2018, 12:05 PM

Why is Lego releasing so many awesome sets? And we are only halfway through the year! Send help! I’m broke! Are there other angles of the black lion? That seems to be the most interesting. I want to see how it folds up.

    • admin June 28, 2018, 12:07 PM

I did not post all the images as they would have taken up too much space, but you can see them in the Brickset database. There is a side and top view of each lion. See here: https://brickset.com/sets/21311-1

This set looks awesome. I so want to get it. Time to save up money.

  • Rob June 29, 2018, 9:18 AM

I was trying to remember why I didn’t get into the show, but looking up info , Voltron came out in the mid 80’s and by then I was in high school and no longer into kids shows. Impressive set, though.

There is a reboot on Netflix, you might want to check out. I heard it was pretty good. 🙂

  • Ray June 29, 2018, 2:30 PM

It’s really striking me lately how much the final sets tend to completely redesigned, really taking only the base concept from the original submitted idea.

It’s interesting how Voltron resulted in so many American-produced sequels and reboots, while the original GoLion wasn’t all that popular in Japan. Compare to Robotech and Macross, where Macross got several follow-ups in Japan but most of the attempted American-produced Robotech follow-ups didn’t go anywhere.

(Speaking of which, is anybody doing a Veritech/Valkyrie fighter on Ideas? With some optional parts it could also double as the Transformers G1 Jetfire. Boy, the licensing for that would be a nightmare, though.)

    • admin June 29, 2018, 9:31 PM

I guess we can never know where or when something becomes really popular. There has been a number of surprises when something was expected to perform well in one market, and it turns out to be a favorite somewhere else. And, of course, things can tank too, no matter how much critics praise it.

I have seen a number of Veritech/Valkyrie submissions on Ideas. If you do a search and Ideas they will come up. There are some pretty good ones. Some of them have a decent number of supporters too, so it’s possible. 🙂
