LEGO Mosaic Maker coming to New York!

A couple of years ago, LEGO introduced the LEGO Mosaic Maker at the Leicester Square LEGO store in London. The LEGO Mosaic Maker is basically a photo booth where your picture gets turned into a LEGO mosaic. Once you get your picture taken, you get printed instructions for building your mosaic, as well as the #40179 LEGO Personalized Mosaic Portrait set. The set comes with 4,502 pieces, including 900 of each of black, dark-gray, light-gray, white and yellow 1×1 plates, a 48×48 stud baseplate, and a brick-separator.

The LEGO Mosaic Maker experience is quite a popular attraction at the London store, and later also became available at some locations in Europe and Asia. Last week, TheBrickFan reported that a LEGO Mosaic Maker booth is also coming to the U.S., with the first location at the Flatiron District LEGO store in New York. The store is currently holding a pre-booking event, and you will need to register and pre-select the time and date you would like to get your mosaic. Here is some other useful info from the registration page:

Pre-booking for the date and time you require is encouraged to guarantee use of the Mosaic Maker. Please visit the cashier before your time slot for payment of $129.99 and in exchange you will receive your LEGO Mosaic Maker experience card. Please note that the Mosaic Maker, bookings can only be made 5 weeks in advance, we apologize for any disappointment this may cause. If you are having trouble with this service or can’t find the appointment you are looking for, please call our store at (212) 255-3217 and we will gladly assist.

If the LEGO Mosaic Maker experience turns out to be successful at this first location in the U.S., hopefully it will also spread to other LEGO stores. Having your portrait turned into a LEGO mosaic provides a fun building experience, and it can also make a great gift to friends and family. Below is a video about how LEGO Mosaic Maker works.

I hope they put this in other stores too. It would make a nice birthday gift for the kids.

I would love to try this! I think the price is reasonable, and the set is a good introduction to mosaic building. I like the colors too! Yes, please put it in other stores too!

I will have to check this out next time I visit New York, but why the long wait and signup period?

The long sign-up period is just because the Mosaic Maker is still new, and LEGO is expecting high demand. Once the newness wears down, we should be able to use it with much less waiting time. Maybe someone from the UK could give us some insight on how is the waiting time there, as they had the Mosaic Maker for quite some time.
