August 2018 – new LEGO sets & promotions

The month of August has been big for LEGO specials and new releases for many years, and this time is no exception. There are lots of new sets to check out and freebies to take advantage of. So, let’s dive in, and take a look at all the August offerings. 🙂

FREE LEGO SUSTAINABLE PLANTS SET: From August 1-14, you will get a free #40320 LEGO Plants from Plants set with purchases of $35 or more. This is the first set that includes pieces (29 in total) made from sustainable plant-based plastic. You can read more on these here: LEGO Plants from Plants – Sustainable LEGO. This offer is valid on all orders within the dates mentioned above (or while supplies last) at official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop.

FREE LEGO UNIKITTY SET: The second freebie this month is the #5005239 Unikitty Castle Room with purchases of $25 or more. This offer is valid August 1-12, so you could actually get both freebies within those dates if your order total is at least $35 at official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop.

DOUBLE VIP POINTS ON HARRY POTTER SETS: During the entire month of August, LEGO VIP members can earn Double VIP Points on two LEGO Harry Potter sets; the #75952 LEGO Harry Potter Newt’s Case of Magical Creatures, and the #75953 LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Whomping Willow. You can find both at the LEGO Harry Potter section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO HARRY POTTER HOGWARTS CASTLE: Speaking of LEGO Harry Potter, the massive 6020-piece #71043 LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle is going to be available to LEGO VIP members on August 15th (regular release will be on September 1st). If you have any interest to get this set before or for Christmas, I would highly suggest getting it within the LEGO VIP early access period. It could very well have the same kind of very long shortages as the #75192 LEGO Star Wars UCS Millennium Falcon. You can read the press-release here with lots of info and pictures here: LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle Coming!, and find it listed at the LEGO Harry Potter section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO HARRY POTTER COLLECTIBLE MINIFIGURES: The #71022 LEGO Harry Potter & Fantastic Beasts Collectible Minifigures series is now available! It includes the following 22 limited-edition characters: Newt Scamander, Jacob Kowalski, Tina Goldstein, Queenie Goldstein, Credence Barebone, Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom, Cho Chang, Dean Thomas, Lord Voldemort, Dobby, Cedric Diggory, Mad-Eye Moody, Professor Flitwick, Professor Trelawney, Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter in school robes, Ron Weasley in school robes, Hermione Granger in school robes, Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter in pajamas, and Percival Graves. This series is definitely worth collecting both for the minifigs and the sweet accessories! You can find them in the LEGO Harry Potter section of the Online LEGO Shop.

MORE NEW LEGO HARRY POTTER SETS: The first wave of LEGO Harry Potter sets have been released last month (see review here: LEGO Harry Potter Sets Overview & Thoughts), and we get two more new sets this month. Both the #75951 LEGO Harry Potter Grindelwald’s Escape, and the #75952 LEGO Harry Potter Newt’s Case of Magical Creatures are now available, and remember that you will earn Double VIP Points on the #75952 LEGO Harry Potter Newt’s Case of Magical Creatures during the entire month. You can find both sets at the LEGO Harry Potter section of the Online LEGO Shop.

I’m curious about those plant pieces! It’s a great idea that they are giving them out as a freebie!

    • DavidH August 1, 2018, 3:10 PM

We shouldn’t notice any difference, but more plant pieces are always welcome, especially when they are free.

      • admin August 1, 2018, 10:06 PM

Yes, the plastic should feel the same. I’m curious to take a look though. 😀

So many new sets! So little money! Definitely want to get some of the Harry Potter sets and minifigs. The Unikitty sets are so weird!

    • admin August 1, 2018, 10:07 PM

Unikitty is the combination of weird and adorable! 🙄

  • Legostuff14 August 1, 2018, 4:52 PM

First off, I was very appalled at the madness at the Lego store today., the grabbing handfuls Harry potter
mini figures it was greed at its fullest. Luckily for me I order some of the mini packs last night. Plus, I was lucky enough to get the newt
suitcase of magical creatures. So, I’m good until my birthday this month.

    • Peter August 1, 2018, 6:32 PM

We haven’t had HP sets for many years, so all the showing and grabbing is understandable to some extent. As long as those minifigs go to kids and collectors I’m mostly okay with it. What’s infuriating is when those minifigs end up on ebay.

      • admin August 1, 2018, 10:09 PM

Hm… yeah, hopefully LEGO made plenty of the sets for everyone not just resellers.

        • Håkan August 2, 2018, 12:28 PM

The CMF series have become a bit expensive, but they seem to be widely available…

    • admin August 1, 2018, 10:08 PM

Gosh, that sounds bad! Glad you were able to get something you wanted! Curious about how you like the suitcase! 😀

  • TomTom August 1, 2018, 6:42 PM

This is the first time I have seen the Capital City set. Are there other pictures? It looks intriguing.

    • admin August 1, 2018, 10:10 PM

Yeah, they are more pictures and details at the Online LEGO Shop. Just click on the link. Reviews should be out soon, now that the set is released.

  • Håkan August 2, 2018, 1:42 PM

Hmmm, what I’m most interested here is actually the Xtra theme. I’d probably need to move to a bigger place before I would have any space left for more, anyway…

  • kingcobra August 2, 2018, 2:13 PM

Do we know when the next double VIP points is going to be? If it’s any time soon I may wait just to help a little with the purchase. I want so many sets! 😀

    • admin August 2, 2018, 10:02 PM

The next major Double VIP Points period should be in October or November. Having said that, LEGO has been throwing in some surprise Double VIP periods here and there, so we might get something earlier too. 🙂

  • Rob August 2, 2018, 10:41 PM

Am I the only one who sees the H.P. minifigs pic looking like a family photo or school picture? Gotta wonder what it took to get Voldemort and Dumbledore to get along long enough to take that pic. 😉

    • Håkan August 3, 2018, 5:03 AM

Everything is awesome when you’re part of a team, you know!

      • Rob August 3, 2018, 9:22 AM

        True. 😀

    • admin August 3, 2018, 5:44 PM

LOL! It’s like a big family reunion. You just have to put someone in between some people, but other than that, it should work… at least for a little while. 🙄

      • Rob August 4, 2018, 2:26 PM

Now I have the image of a “Harry Potter” get together with all of the people involved and a parody of ‘what would happen’ ending with lots of magic spells, plenty of damage and destruction, nasty injuries and a couple of deaths here and there; nothing big. 😀

        • admin August 4, 2018, 3:02 PM

          Oh… that’s not gonna end good. 😈

  • rainey August 13, 2018, 12:44 AM

    Re: the HP minifigs:

WHERE is Professor McGonagall? WHERE is Snape? WHERE is Hagrid?

Why put in Fantastic Beasts characters and a marginal HP character like Dean Thomas and leave out Minerva, Hagrid and Severus? Or leave out Voldemort if he couldn’t be more menacing. But no McGonagall, no Snape, no Hagrid? It’s insane! And really, really disappointing.

On a positive note, I really like the wands. So much more interesting than the ordinary rods I was expecting.

    • admin August 13, 2018, 4:01 PM

Ha! I was just thinking of you yesterday, wondering where you have been. Nice to have you over. As far as the HP minifigs, I’m sure there will be more coming both in sets, and perhaps in another collectible series. 🙂
