The Build a LEGO Lab contest is back!

Radleys, a UK leading manufacturer of laboratory equipment, first launched the highly successful Build a LEGO Lab competition in 2015, and was inundated with entries from all around the world (including those from our readers). Previous entrants have come from every age group, from 4 to 45 years old, and sent in from all over the UK and further afield. Since then, Radleys have been running the contest every year (see previous contest announcements at the end of this post), and science fans are challenged once again to build the ultimate lab out of LEGO bricks! The grand prize winner from each age group will receive a £150 LEGO voucher. Details below. 🙂

LEGO Contest Build a LEGO Lab 1

BUILD A LEGO LAB CONTEST – OVERVIEW: The Build a LEGO Lab competition is back, and the judges want to see even more clever and crazy LEGO lab creations than ever before! Build a LEGO Lab challenges LEGO lovers and aspiring scientists to build their most outlandish labs, take pictures or videos of them, and explain the story behind their choices. Winners will receive £150 worth of LEGO to keep on building long after the competition closes. Inez Cornell, Marketing Manager at Radleys, has seen the LEGO competition grow every year, with bigger and better entries, “We are delighted to be able to launch the LEGO Lab Competition once again, it’s our fourth year in a row! Each year we are amazed by the quality and creativity we receive, and it’s harder than ever to pick winners. We hope 2018 will be our biggest year yet!”

BUILD A LEGO LAB CONTEST – AGE GROUPS: Just like in previous years, the competition is open to, and will be judged in, three separate age groups. LEVEL 1 – 7 years old and younger, LEVEL 2 – Ages 8-13, and LEVEL 3 – Over 14. (Below are pictures of the 2017 winning entries from the three levels, and you can also read more about them here.)

BUILD A LEGO LAB CONTEST – DETAILS: As in the previous contests, your creation can be as big or as small as you like, but it must be built entirely out of LEGO. How you interpret this challenge is up to you, but if you really want to impress the judges, you might consider building a realistic laboratory filled with realistic scientists. Also, share about the sort of experiments your scientists are conducting. These tips and more are from the contest rules page, so make sure you read them, especially if you want to win!

BUILD A LEGO LAB CONTEST – HOW TO ENTER: This year, the contest entry process has been simplified, and there is only one way to enter. All you need to do is to fill in the entry form on Radleys’ website at radleys.com/lego-competition/. You will be asked to upload your photo and/or video link, and fill in your personal information, like your name, email address, and age. There is also a space to describe your entry in detail.

BUILD A LEGO LAB CONTEST – TIMELINE: The contest closes on the 7th of September 2018, and the winner from each category will be announced on the 20th of September 2018. Radleys is not responsible for lost, late, illegible, or incomplete entries, or those not received for any reason. Winners will be notified by email. If the promoter is not able to get in contact with the winner by December 31st 2018, the prize will be forfeited and an alternative winner will be drawn. It is the winner’s responsibility to notify the promoter of any change in contact information.

BUILD A LEGO LAB CONTEST – RULES: 1.) Winners who live in a country with a LEGO brand store will receive a £150 eVoucher redeemable at the Online LEGO Shop of their own country. If the winner lives in a country that does not have a brand store, they will be able to select a prize of their choice from the Online LEGO Shop, equivalent to the value of the voucher in their own currency, which Radleys will ship to them. 2.) The closing date for entries is September 7th 2018. 3.) Entries must be built by the entrant. 4.) The prize does not have a cash value, is non-negotiable, non-transferrable, and non-refundable. 5.) If the promoter is not able to get in contact with the winner by the December 31st 2018, the prize will be forfeited and an alternative winner will be drawn. 6.) It is the winner’s responsibility to notify the promoter of any change in contact information. 7.) Bulk entries from trade, consumer groups, or third parties will not be accepted. 8.) Limit of one entry per person. 9.) Entrant warrants that the entry is original and does not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party, has not been published in any medium, and has not won and previous awards or competitions. 10.) Entries will be judged on creativity and originality, with one winner chosen from each level. 11.) Incomplete and/or inaccurate entries, and entries not complying with all rules, are subject for disqualification. 12.) Decisions of judges are final and binding. 13.) Entry must be your own creation, and not a LEGO designed kit, or a project found online, or in a magazine. 14.) Parents and guardians are to submit on behalf of children aged 13 and below. Radleys reserve the right to disqualify entries from children aged 13 and below that are not submitted by a parent or guardian.

BUILD A LEGO LAB CONTEST – PRIZE: While last year, Radleys allowed the public to choose the winners via their social media channels, this time judging is going to be done by a carefully selected panel of experts from Radleys. Entries are judged on their creativity, originality, scientific know-how, and other fun factors.

So whether you’re looking for something to do over the summer, or you simply need an excuse to flex your flair for LEGO, it’s time get your bricks out and get building! If you would like to participate, but need a bit of inspiration, you can take a look at winning entries from 2015 here, 2016 here, and 2017 here.

So what do you think? How do you like this LEGO contest? Are you planning to take enter? Do you have any ideas already about what you are going to build? Feel free to share in the comment section below! 😉

Sorry, off topic but, did anyone realized that the madeye moody mini figures prosthetic leg is on the left and not on the right . Where it supposed to be.

Wikipedia says it was Mad eye left leg . I’m confused . What does the book say? Because, in the book hagrids hair is black not brown ( like the recent minifigure).

I think all Lego figures had the prosthetic leg on one particular side, for some technical reason…

    IIRC…

That’s a good point. As far as which leg supposed to be prostatic, I’m not sure. Maybe someone with more HP knowledge will chime in.

So, on topic. If I use part of the monster fighters mad scientist and build a similar idea( not to copy of course). Make a lab with a couple of floors and in each floor is a scientific experiments that have gone wrong. But, the mad scientist doesn’t have the heart to distort them.

Sounds like a good story! BTW, we did have some winners previously from our community, so if any of you are inspired to enter, go for it! 😀
