LEGO Ideas Pop-Up Book videos & more!

The #21315 LEGO Ideas Pop-Up Book is the latest in the selection of LEGO sets that were originally submitted by and voted for by LEGO fans. The first version of the LEGO Ideas Pop-Up Book was designed by Grant Davis, a fan of both LEGO and pop-up books. Grant later reached out to Jason Allemann a master of mechanical LEGO creations, to collaborate on improving the design and submitting it to LEGO Ideas. The #21315 LEGO Ideas Pop-Up Book became available at the beginning of the month, and it has been received by LEGO fans with great enthusiasm. Since our last discussion on the set, the designer video was also released, as well as a couple of videos with Jason’s own review and thoughts. See below. 🙂

To begin, here is the official description of the set: Build, play and display the classic fairy tales Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk with the #21315 LEGO Ideas Pop-up Book! This first-ever buildable pop-up book made from LEGO bricks opens to reveal the famous scene of grandmother’s forest cottage featuring opening door, bed and kitchen area. Recreate the scene when Little Red Riding Hood meets the wolf, or swap out grandmother’s cottage for the scene of the giant’s castle in the clouds. This collectible toy features enough bricks to build both scenes, or you can even build a scene of your own and makes a perfect creative gift. This LEGO set includes a booklet with a short history of pop-up books, a condensed history of each fairy tale in the set, as well as information about its fan designers and LEGO designers. Includes 4 new-for-November-2018 LEGO minifigures: Little Red Riding Hood, Grandmother, the Wolf, and the Giant. Also includes 1 new-for-November-2018 microfigure: Jack. Pop-up book measures over 7” (20cm) long and 5” (13cm) wide when closed, and over 11” (28cm) wide when open. 859 pieces. Price: $69.99 – BUY HERE

In the following video, LEGO designer Wes Talbott and LEGO graphic designer Crystal Fontan discuss turning the original LEGO Ideas Pop-Up Book design into the official LEGO sets that we have today. They also talk about some of the interesting functions and Easter eggs found in the set, as well as their own background and experiences as LEGO designers.

In the player below, I have included three videos by Jason Allemann. In the first video, Jason discusses the content of the #21315 LEGO Ideas Pop-Up Book set, including the instructions, parts, minifigures, and the finished model. He also shares an alternate pop-up scene he designed using just the pieces included in the set. You can find instructions for this model at Jason’s website at JKBrickWorks.com (he is planning to post more alternate designs in the future, so keep an eye on updates). In the second video, Jason takes a closer look at the differences between the original LEGO Ideas submission and the production model. In the third video, Jason shows how to build a clasp for the book (like in the original submission), and some of the other changes he made to the official set.

I’m personally very excited about this set, as I love pop-up books, really liked Jason and Grant’s original design, and I’m very impressed with the look and functions of the final version. Plus, I can’t wait to make my own scenes! It’s always great to see sets that are both beautiful and encourages creativity. I’m sure we will see lots of unique alternate scenes for the pop-up book from the LEGO fan community. If you are interested, you can find it at the LEGO Ideas section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? How do you like the #21315 LEGO Ideas Pop-Up Book? Is this a set you are planning to get? And how do you like the final design compared to the original submission? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

One of the best sets in my opinion. Very beautiful, and it’s great that the creator is so involved with offering extra modding ideas and upgrades.

I agree. Very nice set. And its suitable for the holidays. If I would have the money, I plan to buy one for all my favorite people for Christmas!

I really like Jason’s upgrades, including the clasp. Looking forward to more alternate builds! One thing I liked better about the original is that the tan was a more neutral base for all kinds of builds. The dark green kind of limits what can be done, but I understand why they did it.

You could probably fill the inside with a layer of plates to change the color, or make another book with tan bricks or even blue bricks for ocean scenes. Now that I think about this, I want to do it! My bookshelf will be full of LEGO books! 😀

LOL! Yep, best solution is to just make more books! 😀

That’s a good point. Dark-green is good for natural landscapes, but not the best for (for example, deserts, or lava, or space).

Great set! And I like how Jason moved the name tiles over to the side. It might be worth getting some extra name tiles so they can be both at the cover and spine. I don’t know what Bricklink prices are going to be though.
