Tales from the Monastery of Spinjitzu episodes

There is some great news for LEGO Ninjago fans! LEGO releases a series of brand new mini-movies to promote the upcoming LEGO Ninjago Legacy sets. Tales From the Monastery of Spinjitzu consist of six episodes, preceded by Season 9 and succeeded by Season 10. A team of painters is creating a mural of the ninjas’ past victories, while the team train in the newly rebuilt Monastery of Spinjitzu and reminisce about the past. ๐Ÿ™‚

Here is the official description of the series: The ninja of LEGO Ninjago are rebuilding the Monastery of Spinjitzu after it was burned down by the Hypnobrai tribe. To preserve the Legacy of Spinjitzu for generations to come, Master Wu is overseeing the making of a mural that depicts some of the most defining and epic moments in the history of Spinjitzu. The episodes are not available on YouTube, so I can’t embed them here, however you can watch all six shorts at the official LEGO Ninjago website. I have also included below the synopsis of the episodes for your convenience, and so that we can discuss them.

  1. Master Class – In this episode, Master Wu gives the Ninja a review in Spinjitzu, teaching balance, conquering fear, focus, and teamwork, and due to some mishap, they all end up getting covered in gold paint.
  2. Green and Gold – In this episode, Lloyd dreams about what happened to the Ultra Dragon, and finds that he returned to the First Realm.
  3. The Weekend Drill – In this episode, Cole, driving his newly rebuilt Earth Driller, gets called to fight the Giant Stone Warrior in Kryptarium Prison.
  4. Elemental Rider – In this episode, Zane and Kai recall a time when they fought off some Venomari using their Golden Weapons in vehicle form.
  5. Blue Lightning – In this episode, Jay remembers beating Pythor off some noodle trucks using his jet.
  6. Samurai X-Treme – In this episode, Nya talks about how she would upgrade her Samurai Mech if she had made it today.

As you will notice, there are inconsistencies between the Legacy stories and how the events actually happened in the previous seasons. Tommy Andreasen, writer of the stories, explains that Tales From the Monastery of Spinjitzu is considered canon, and the first two episodes are set in the present day. The other four episodes start and end in the present day, however the stories are memories, fantasies, dreams, and visual augmentations, which means they are saturated by the ninja’s current state of mind and self-image. In other words, the ninja are remembering the past in an exaggerated way, or having selective memory.

Great episodes, aren’t they? And they perfectly set the scene for the upcoming LEGO Ninjago Legacy sets coming soon! While we are waiting for the new sets, you can take a look at the currently available LEGO Ninjago sets at the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? How do you like the LEGO Ninjago Legacy mini-movies? And are you looking forward to the new sets?ย Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Hayato December 27, 2018, 12:40 PM

I will save this for the kiddos to watch this weekend. I know they will be very excited. Thanks for posting.

I’m also excited about these new Ninjago sets. They tend to do well with investment. I just checked 7 Ninjago sets released in 2017 and only two sets were negative CAGR, meaning negative returns. The other 5 sets had nice positive CAGR. Who know which of these 6 sets will do well but some of them are definitely a great keep for long term investment. Thanks for bringing these new sets to our attention!

Is ninjago going to continue after the legacy episodes and sets? I’m nervous that they won’t. Do you know anything about this, admin?

    • admin December 27, 2018, 4:40 PM

Not sure, Jason. Haven’t heard anything that far out. But I hope it continues…

    • Pokedon December 28, 2018, 2:23 PM

JasonK Yes it is continuing! We’ve already had a couple trailers for season 10, and Tommy Andreasan himself said Ninjago is going to continue for a while yet ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, my! So happy for this! I hope that the full episodes will also be posted on the website. Admin, would you please let us know?

    • admin December 27, 2018, 4:41 PM

I’m not sure if they will post those, or will just release them on DVD. By the way, the first full episode is technically a compilation of these shorts. Anyway, I will keep an eye on them.

So awesome! Thanks! I haven’t seen any Ninjago news for a while. I hope we will have another awesome year of NINJA GO!!! They should make two more big sets to complete the Ninjago City and Ninjago City Docks.

Hm… yes… a full Ninjago City block would be awesome! ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m very tempted to get the monastery. I have so many ninjago sets and this set is has more of an open space to it. So, I’m up in the air about it. It would go great with my other Ninjago sets ( including the ninjago city from the movie). The rest of the sets are inexpensive. I might have a ninjago explosion in my Lego room.๐Ÿ˜€

    • admin December 27, 2018, 9:13 PM

Yeah, the monastery is nice! I’m tempted to get that one as well. It has a lovely design that would work in a lot of different settings. I wouldn’t blame you if you end up with a Ninjago explosion. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have mixed feelings about these mini-episodes. Since they’re Ninjago episodes, I find them entertaining and am glad we get something animated to accompany this wave of sets. That said, they seem to be made primarily to explain the sets’ appearance: each episode features one of the sets in a form nearly identical to the plastic version. The sets themselves are well-designed, but I dislike most of them, the exceptions being the Monastery, Golden Dragon, and Earth Driller (which is far better then before). I’ve seen lots of praise for the decision to make new designs, but I would have preferred updated versions of the old vehicles, using new pieces to make the old sets more accurate to the original show versions. But maybe I’m missing the difference between “Legacy” sets and rereleases.
While Andreasen’s explanation for the contradictions with previous seasons is perfectly fine (and nearly repeated by Zane in Elemental Rider), it and the explanation for the changes made for Season 8 still seem to me like excuses for unnecessary changes. This one, at least, is reasonable, since it works with the theme of the episodes. However, I doubt I will ever agree with the changes for Season 8, although I’ve gotten used to themโ€ฆ.
Anyways, I note the second episode here gives us an official explanation for the Ultra Dragon’s disappearance, though it sadly has also been confirmed that Season 9 showed the Dragon’s ultimate fate. Finally, hopefully the new Monastery, with mural, appears in Season 10.

Oh, my! Haven’t seen you around for a long time! Happy Holidays! Everything is good with you? Were missing your thoughtful comments! ๐Ÿ™‚

      • BLProductions December 28, 2018, 10:20 PM

Yeah, this year has been hectic, especially this last semester of college, so I haven’t been able to comment as much as I would have liked. But I’m alive, and I still check this site every day to read the interesting articles you post. ๐Ÿ™‚
Additionally, since I’m on break for a few weeks, I was thinking about writing an article on the new pieces that came out in 2018, highlighting the more useful ones. (Yes, I still record new parts, despite the time sink of doing so; luckily most major set releases are during school breaks.) Could I write an article about that?
Also, Pokedon seemed sure about Season 10, so I looked it up and found two teaser trailers and a sneak peek from SDCC 2018. Here’s the first teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJteqZNl-h4 It doesn’t reveal much, although this Oni story arc keeps getting darker. Perhaps they do intend to end the show soonโ€ฆ. ๐Ÿ˜•

        • admin December 28, 2018, 10:50 PM

Hm… that trailer is interesting! And yes, it look pretty dark. Hope all the ninja are going to be okay. Sure if you would like to write something up, you’re very welcome. There are so many new pieces, it’s hard to keep up! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • Legostuff14 December 27, 2018, 10:28 PM

Here’s a crazy thought, ninjago meets Lego movie 2. ( as a team up).

    • admin December 28, 2018, 4:01 PM

LOL! TLM2 is crazy enough already, and Ninjago is a mish-mash too, so they seem perfectly compatible to me. ๐Ÿ™„

  • LEGOJeff December 28, 2018, 10:24 AM

Thanks for posting these. I’m an AFOL, but I really enjoy Ninjago. The story is great, and the sets are awesome. I hope they continue after Legacy.

    • Pokedon December 28, 2018, 2:26 PM

LEGOJeff Season 10 is still to come after Legacy, there’s already a couple trailers released recently for it, and Tommy Andreasan himself said Ninjago will continue for a while yet ๐Ÿ™‚ AFOL here as well and a huge Ninjago fan <3

      • admin December 28, 2018, 3:59 PM

        Awesome to hear! ๐Ÿ˜€
