LEGO Double VIP Points & Program Changes

For the month of June, LEGO is offering two sets with Double VIP Points: the #70838 LEGO Movie 2 Queen Watevra’s So-Not-Evil Space Palace, and the #70839 LEGO Movie 2 The Rexcelsior. In addition, as we discussed back in March (see links at the end of this post) there are some changes coming to the LEGO VIP Program. Although all the details are not yet known, LEGO did release some preliminary information, which we will discuss below.

The LEGO Movie 2 Queen Watevra’s So-Not-Evil Space Palace comes with a really interesting futuristic design. It features a rotating top section with an opening, detachable rocket for Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi, detachable pods for other characters, security room, detailed dining room, and a DJ booth for creative play. If you have seen the movie, you can play out the scenes from the film, and if you haven’t seen it, you can easily convert this set into some kind of space station or alien mothership. The set includes eight characters from The Lego Movie 2: a Bachelor Batman minifigure, a Celeste mini-doll figure, plus Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi, Ice Cream Cone, Star, Royal Guard, and 2 Heart brick-built figures. The palace measures over 18” (48cm) high, 13” (34cm) wide and 7” (18cm) deep. 997 pieces. Price: $99.99 – BUY HERE

The LEGO Movie 2 The Rexcelsior is one of the largest sets related to The LEGO Movie 2 with a spaceship shaped like a clenched fist. It comes with opening doors and lift-off roofs for easy play, dual microfigure cockpit, and a detailed microscale interior with various rooms and compartments. The handle at the back has a trigger to activate the rapid-fire, six-missile spring-loaded shooter. The set also includes five micro builds: Emmet’s house, a forklift, two interaptors and a dropship. The two minifigures are Stubble Trouble Emmet and Rex Dangervest, plus we also get Emmet and Rex microfigures, and five micro raptor dinosaurs (3 metallic, 2 dark blue). The Rexcelsior measures over 7” (19cm) high, 15” (40cm) long and 8” (21cm) wide. 1,826 pieces. Price: $149.99 – BUY HERE

Also, remember that besides getting Double VIP Points on these two sets, there are a few days left (the last day is the 18th of June) to get the super cute, retro-themed, free exclusive #40335 LEGO Space Rocket Ride set with purchases of $99 or more at official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop.

As far as changes to the LEGO VIP Program, we don’t know all the details yet, but this is what has been revealed so far:

It’s almost here! Are you ready for more points? Are you ready for awesome exclusives? Are you ready for epic LEGO experiences? If you answered “Yes!” to any of the above, then you’ll love what we’ve done with VIP. The big launch is coming soon. Very soon. But we want to give you a sneak preview of how you can earn more points and unlock more rewards. Here’s what’s new with VIP:

  • More, more, more! We updated how your points add up so you can get more rewards. And we’ve unlocked more ways to earn points every day.
  • Build Your Rewards! We made your points more flexible than ever. You can still get the discounts you love, but now you can also get experiences and members-only gifts no matter how many points you have.
  • All new Rewards Center! When you want to use points for a discount, just visit the all-new Rewards Center, choose how many points you want to use, then get a code for your discount. Easy!

Changes to the LEGO VIP Program have been long in the making. It started with surveying the LEGO fan community and getting their feedback, testing out some changes, and now it looks like the new program is going to be rolled out very soon. I like the idea of being able to build points more ways, and that redeeming points is going to be more flexible. I hope that discounts and freebies won’t go away for lesser desired features, and that the new program will be worth it for both kids and adult LEGO fans.

What do you think? Are you planning to get either or both of the Double VIP Points sets? Or do you have them already? How do you like them? And what do you think of the changes coming to the LEGO VIP Program? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below!

I’m a little nervous about what the VIP changes will mean. I hope they don’t get away with double points, early access, and freebies, because, frankly, that’s all that matters.

The current program is not that great. It’s basically a 5% discount going towards future purchases or 10% with double points. It’s not horrible, but they could do better.

We are looking at the Rexcelsior, but even though it’s cool, it doesn’t seem to have that many play features. Or am I seeing it wrong? I was expecting more things to come out of it, transform, etc. Still debating on it.

As I’ve got it, if you have a small hand, you could wear it as a glove.. That’s the main play feature… (And you could possibly shoot missiles or something while you do it…)

Hmm, the poster guy on the box appears to be a teenager, or about-ish, so maybe it’s not necessary to have such a small hand after all…

JANGBRiCKS shows “wearing” the set himself. It works. I watched his review and I agree with those who expected more from the set. It still looks cool though. 😀

I’m really not impressed with some of bigger Lego movie two sets . I just think that lego is trying to hard and should have kept it simple like the first one. I’m not a big fan of mini scale sets. You just might as well make a model for display only. Where is the play value?

I liked the first movie sets better too. They were more creative and interesting. And the prices were really good. Many of the sets for the second movie are either really strange or expensive. The exception is the spaceman set. That one is a goldmine for classic space minifigs!

Mini and micro building is actually quite fun, especially if you have little space and/or a smaller budget. It’s not my main way of building either, but I do recommend trying it out. It’s amazing how much the possibilities expand when we allow ourselves to think outside of minifig-scale. In fact, old-timer LEGO fans often mention that the introduction of minifigs greatly reduced the way people think about LEGO. I don’t necessarily agree with this, but I do understand their point of view. It’s worth playing with different scales at least some of the time. 🙂

I agree . I have a couple of the spaceman sets. In fact , I’m thinking combining it with the Space sets that are coming out. They can be part of the space worker team.

Hopefully this will work out fine, although the sales pitch makes me think of one of those purchase-based web games…

That’s what was bugging me about this anouncement!

For some reason my brain kept coming up with situations that wouldn’t be beneficial to customers, like you can get codes but they’ll put a hard cap on just how much you can redem them for. That sort of thing. That would be especially true if they make points easier to get thereby devaluing what we’ve earned.

That’s because I’m used to the video game industry that is all about making “micro-transactions.” It is not a pleasant environment to be a customer. I’m kind of now itching to spend what I have so I don’t lose it.

I hope the changes are for the better. I would love to earn points on all my purchases, not just at their own stores, but that probably won’t happen. Maybe get some perks for filling out surveys, and participating in other online and in-store events? Like the others said, all that really matters is getting discounts. With all those big sets, this is an expensive hobby already.

On another note, they should really bring back the store calendar announcing promotions for the whole month. Removing that was a bummer. I know why they did it, but it didn’t benefit fans at all. I feat that changing the points will be the same thing. It will masquerade as something for our benefit when it really isn’t.

    • admin June 10, 2019, 8:59 PM

I read somewhere that the promotion announcements will be back on the digital version of the calendar. Hopefully soon.

I don’t know yet if I will get the set or not, as it’s a lot of money for me, but I love those big gates! It reminds me of the old Viking fortress. And the dino is truly impressive. I hope the designer video will be released soon so we can see more details.

UPDATE: The designer-video was released, so I added it just now. Enjoy! 🙂
