Today, the LEGO Group revealed its latest LEGO Creator Expert model – a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy that will cruise into LEGO Stores globally on August 1, 2019. Developed in collaboration with Harley-Davidson, this detailed LEGO interpretation of the iconic Milwaukee motorcycle captures the beauty of the real-life machine with finishes, surfaces, and design elements crafted to replicate the full-size Harley-Davidson Fat Boy. Featuring 1,023 pieces, the model comes complete with solid-disc wheels, teardrop fuel tank, integrated speedometer, and dual exhaust pipes.
The finished model measures over 7 inches (20 cm) high, 7 inches (18 cm) wide and 12 inches (33 cm) long and features several moveable parts for owners to engage. Spin the rear tyre to see the Milwaukee-Eight engine with moving pistons and dual exhaust pipes, spring to life. Turn the handlebar, move the gearshift and brake levers, and flip down the motorcycle’s kickstand for easy parking. Finished with an authentic dark red and black color scheme with Harley-Davidson logos on each side reflective of the 2019 Fat Boy motorcycle’s Wicked Red paint scheme, it’s a perfect display centerpiece for any home, office, or anywhere to channel the inspiration to ride.

To celebrate the launch, LEGO Master Builders created a life-size model of the motorcycle, complete with silver-coated parts, Wi-Fi animation control, sound and light effects to imitate a real Harley- Davidson Fat Boy and 6,000 special LEGO elements. The extraordinary creation took 865 hours to build, is made of 69,569 pieces and will be on display at select LEGO stores and Harley-Davidson events for fans to see.

Designed by stylists Willie G. Davidson and Louie Netz, the real-life Fat Boy has undergone very few modifications over the years aside from some minor design tweaks. Its defining characteristic is the front and rear solid-cast disc wheels, which LEGO designers captured well. The teardrop fuel tank, the seat, the engine, and the dual exhaust pipes also look good in the LEGO version. And, it’s great to see that the logo is printed! It’s such a distinctive feature of the real bike.
On the other hand, I’m not too happy about the front suspension. It seems too thick and stiff compared to the sleek tapering design of the original. However, I can’t think of any other currently available LEGO parts that would have worked better. Another result of the limitation of the LEGO medium is that the iconic gently flared fenders weren’t captured all that well.
I’m actually pretty surprised that LEGO choose a Harley-Davidson to be made into a set. Harleys are known for their lovely curves and classic handmade look, which is hard to recapture with LEGO elements. A sportier, more modern bike would have been easier to work with. That LEGO designers took up the challenge to recreate a Harley is respectable, and the bike does look good from most angles. It’s only the front suspension that really bothers me. And, if they had added some chrome parts that would have been fantastic!
At least in North America, the Fat Boy is super popular with baby boomers, so I expect the LEGO version to sell well. And, the bike’s popularity isn’t limited to Harley’s customer base. The Fat Boy appeared in several films, like Terminator 2, Terminator: Genisys (one of the bikes from Terminator 2 is currently on display at the Harley-Davidson Museum), and Wild Hogs, and television shows like Sons of Anarchy, and CSI: Miami.

They should have at least used the silver painted parts if chrome was too expensive or difficult to make. The shiny chrome bits are so important for Harleys.

Yes, as far as more complex and larger motorcycles, the previous ones are all Technic. This set also has some Technic at its core though. 🙂

It’s a little blocky, and there is too much light gray (I would have loved chrome!), but overall it looks good. Especially the engine section. How does the size compare to the Creator cars?
The bike is quite large and is not in scale with the cars, but the cars are not to scale with each other either.
Would it be possible to have the parts chromed? I like everything about the set except for the lack of shininess.
Yes, certainly! There are a number of LEGO chromers who can chrome the parts for you. It’s not going to be cheap, but still cheaper than a real Harley. 😀
The set looks phenomenal. I hope that we will get a designer video too. I read that Mike Psiaki designed it.
