2020 LEGO Summer Sets Coming!

A number of 2020 summer LEGO sets have been revealed in the past couple of weeks, so I thought to do a round-up on what’s coming later this year and we can discuss. Take a look and let me know what you think!

2020 LEGO CITY SUMMER SETS: The LEGO City theme seems to be taking over the very successful LEGO Friends Marine Rescue collection from last year. We even get a new hammerhead shark and stingray! Sets include the #60263 LEGO City Mini Submarine, the #60264 LEGO City Marine Research Submarine, and the enormous #60266 LEGO City Marine Research Vessel that uses two ship hulls. Other new LEGO City sets focus on planes. Sets include the #60260 LEGO City Air Show, the #60261 LEGO City Airport, and the #60262 LEGO City Passenger Plane. You can see all the sets in detail in the video overview below, and they should be listed sometime soon at the LEGO City section of the Online LEGO Shop.

2020 LEGO CREATOR SUMMER SETS: Three fantastic LEGO Creator 3-in-1 sets have been revealed. This includes the #31107 LEGO Creator Space Rover rebuilds into a space station or small spacecraft, the #31108 LEGO Creator Camper Van rebuilds into a recreational vehicle or a lighthouse, and the #31109 LEGO Creator Pirate Ship rebuilds into a skull island or pirate hideout. All three sets look fantastic! They should be listed sometime soon at the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.

2020 LEGO DC SUPER HEROES SET: A very interesting set coming is the #76157 LEGO DC Super Heroes Wonder Woman vs. Cheetah, related to the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 film scheduled for release in mid-August. We don’t know exactly what the set depicts, but it does look very cool with all those printed gold panels! Although the set isn’t officially released yet, it had appeared in some stores, so some LEGO fans were lucky enough to get it already. Below is a full video-review of the set, and look for it at the LEGO DC Super Heroes section of the Online LEGO Shop.

2020 LEGO MINECRAFT SETS: Two new LEGO Mincraft sets are coming in August, the #21161 LEGO Minecraft Crafting Box, and the #21163 LEGO Minecraft Redstone Battle. Both sets are already listed at the LEGO Minecraft section of the Online LEGO Shop, so you can read up on the details.

2020 LEGO SUPER MARIO SET: It was only recently that LEGO announced they will be making sets related to the Super Mario franchise. The #71360 Adventures with Mario Starter Course is already listed at the Online LEGO Shop with a release date of August 1st. This set has some interesting interactive features that you can learn about from the video in the press-release. Other sets included in the collection that are coming later are the #40414 LEGO Monty Mole & Super Mushroom Expansion Set, the #71360 LEGO Adventures with Mario, the #71365 LEGO Piranha Plant Power Slide, the #71369 LEGO Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle.

2020 LEGO MONKEY KID SETS: It has been rumored for some time that there are going to be sets loosely based on the Chinese folklore of the Monkey King titled Monkie Kid. Pictures of the sets are available online, however they haven’t been officially announced just yet. The sets are very similar to the LEGO Ninjago story; a combination of traditional Chinese elements in a modern and futuristic setting. It’s a pretty exciting theme worth looking into. Sets include the #80006 LEGO Monkey Kid White Dragon Horse Bike, the #80007 LEGO Monkey Kid Iron Bull Tank, the #80008 LEGO Monkey Kid Cloud Jet, the #80009 LEGO Monkey Kid Pigsy’s Food Truck, the #80010 LEGO Monkey Kid Demon Bull King, the #80011 LEGO Monkey King Red Son’s Inferno Truck, the #80012 LEGO Monkey King Warrior Mech, and the #80013 LEGO Monkey Kid’s Team Secret HQ.

Besides the above-mentioned sets, we will be also getting new LEGO Friends, LEGO Hidden Side, LEGO Jurassic World, LEGO Star Wars, and other sets, but we have little information on those at this point. Anyhow, let me know what you think. Which summer sets are you looking forward to the most? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below!

Is Monkey Kid replacing Ninjago? Do you know, admin?

    • lifelibertylego April 25, 2020, 1:41 PM

No, because today some Ninjago sets were also revealed. Which is interesting because many of the sets are very similar.

      • LEGOJeff April 25, 2020, 1:48 PM

I wonder if they originally meant to have these sets for the Asian market only. After the Chinese New Year sets fiasco, they promised that they will make all sets available worldwide, so maybe their plans changed, and now we have both Ninjago and Monkey Kid at all markets?

        • Håkan April 26, 2020, 8:15 AM

It’s a bit surprising that Lego would run two in-house themes being so similar concurrently. There were unsubstantiated rumors that Ninjago would be replaced, although my impression was that the theme overall performed quite well…

Jangbricks said in his live stream that the monkey kid sets may have been originally for Asia only. But now that their policy changed, they will release the sets everywhere. It’s possible they didn’thave enough time to adjust their strategy for Ninjago. Thus we will end up with two very similar themes.

Yeah, I head that theory as well. Perhaps they will let both themes run at the same time for a while, and then keep whichever is the winner.

      • jgiese626 April 27, 2020, 1:56 PM

What similarities did you notice? The two themes seem to be drawing on very different sources of inspiration, with Ninjago emulating fantasy tabletop games, and Monkie Kid adapting the popular novel Journey to the West.

I don’t know who you were asking specifically, but the bikes, jets, and mechs look very similar. You could put the Monkey Kid sets in Ninjago, and wouldn’t know the difference. They both have Asian motifs and high tech machinery. Monkey Kid is maybe loosely inspired by Journey to the West, but that’s it.

          • Ian April 27, 2020, 2:31 PM

Both the jet and the samurai mech looking thing could be right out of Ninjago. The bike too. And the way the characters are dressed. Journey to the West doesn’t have jets and mechs and any of that stuff.

MK also seems loosely inspired by the Japanese manga Dragon Ball ( / Z / GT ) which I believe have things like jets and mechs and similar modern pop-culture tropes. (At least, they wouldn’t feel ‘out of place’ in a DB setting…)

My post was in response to lifelibertylego. I can certainly understand where the vehicles within Monkie Kid and Ninjago might begin look similar (e.g. Fire Stone Mech and Monkey King Warrior Mech).

My point was more that the settings are sufficiently different to avoid confusing the two themes – the Ninjago summer wave is set in the your archetypical evil sorcerer’s volcanic layer, while Monkie Kid evokes a near-future aesthetic which more closely resembles the Ninjago Movie theme.

            • lifelibertylego April 27, 2020, 6:54 PM

Okay, I’m back, reading your comment. Yes, what you’re saying is true, but for kids who see the sets on the shelves, the two themes will look very similar. I heard though that there is a TV show coming with Monkey Kid, so if that’s substantically different from the Ninjago TV show, it should help separate the themes.

There are new Ninjago sets coming as well. They were revealed just this morning. 🙂

  • Peter April 25, 2020, 11:38 AM

Man, the Creator sets look really good. All three of them!

  • Legostuff14 April 25, 2020, 1:01 PM

Yyyeeesss! Oh I want the monkey kid sets . They will go great with my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.( I’ve seen pictures). The city sets definitely yes also.

  • j.j. April 25, 2020, 1:13 PM

Wow! That pirate ship is amazing! And I like all three versions. I’m tempted to buy three sets just so I can have all three at once. Haha.

  • c3po April 25, 2020, 1:49 PM

Admin, you can’t post the Monkey Kid pictures or videos? I would love to talk about those sets!

    • Thita (admin) April 27, 2020, 2:02 PM

Apparently, LEGO’s legal department is going to issue takedowns, although I haven’t seen it happen yet.

  • chris jarvis April 25, 2020, 2:27 PM

I want the Creator Pirate Ship. It looks like an affordable option for those that can’t get the new Pirate set.

  • Garmadon the Great April 25, 2020, 4:04 PM

They did a really great job with the Creator sets. I normally don’t pay much attention to them, but wow! And I’m looking forward to Monkey Kid. By the way, I have seen that it also spelled as Monkie Kid at some sites. I’m not sure which is right.

  • Ian April 25, 2020, 4:29 PM

I want those gold pieces from the Wonder Woman set. They would be great for my space station. The set seems very similar to the Christmas X-wing. And I like others, I love the Creator sets!

  • walrusmaster April 25, 2020, 5:25 PM

I kinda want to try out the Mario set. It seems cool. I hope the government sends us some more money so we can stimulate the economy by buying more Lego!

    • Håkan April 26, 2020, 8:27 AM

Yeah, the Japanese solution. It’s unclear how well it works, though…

Otherwise I’m mostly interested in the Creator Space Rover, and possibly some minifig parts from 60262 Passenger Aeroplane, if they could be bought separately…

  • FrenchToast April 26, 2020, 10:46 AM

There I also new Dots sets coming, which I’m very happy about. From the Creator sets I like the camper. It may be a bit too wide next to city cars. I’m not sure.

  • Legostuff14 April 26, 2020, 1:39 PM

I’m having a bit of a Lego set overload in my head. 😨. I’m trying to play catch up with some sets I don’t have. I am one set away to complete the hidden side theme ( the lighthouse of darkness). A couple of the Jurassic Park sets and I would have completed that theme for now. Then there’s the bat cave clayface invasion set. So, I’m A little behind before the new sets arrive. I can save up the money for some of the sets I need but, not all of them. I know the new sets won’t be out for a while( they’re not even out yet) but, like everyone else I’d like to get new sets when they first come out. Any advice?

    • Thita (admin) April 26, 2020, 1:52 PM

My advice in situations like this is always the same; weight a bit until you decide what you get. A month or so is enough to let the emotions cool off, and look at new sets with a more critical eye. Do they fit your current collection? Do they have the pieces that you want to use? If yes, you still want to get them in a month or two, and you have the budget and space for them, go for it. If not, then you can pass on them with peace. 🙂

  • Legostuff14 April 26, 2020, 4:24 PM

Thank you. I am going to do the wait and see tactic. I mean I’m a lot further along in my collection partially because the situation we’re in and needing something to keep me busy. As well as the kindness of family members and the generosity of keeping my hobby alive. Some of the more expensive sets I don’t get until birthdays or Christmas. So, let’s not get greedy here. I don’t know why I get so crazy when I see new sets coming out. I don’t think I’m the only one that gets this way. At least I hope not. Thanks again thita ( admin).😊
