LEGO Ideas Alternate Nature & Minifig Contest!

There is a new contest on LEGO Ideas that you might want to check out. The LEGO Ideas team is looking for creative, fun builds that will blow the minds of everyone visiting the world-famous LEGO House in Billund, Denmark. This is your chance to give your personal creation a new home, in The Home of the Brick, as the winners of this contest will get their model showcased at The LEGO House for an entire year! Details below.

The challenge is to build either an alternative nature build or a fun LEGO minifigure or mini-doll scene. In the first option, the LEGO Ideas team would like to see your take on nature with an alternate twist, such a humanized flower, a sci-fi plant, or a genetically modified insect! In the second option, the LEGO Ideas team is looking for fun and interesting minifig or mini-doll scenes – the funnier the better!

The contest will consist of 4 phases: 1.) Submission Phase – build and submit your entry before May 11th, 2020 at 6:00 a.m. EST, 2.) Judging Phase – the judges review the entries and choose the fan vote selections by May 26th, 2020, 3.) Fan Vote – the judges selections will go to a fan vote on May 26th, 2020 and will run until June 2nd, and 4.) Winners Announcement - the grand prize winners and two runner up winners will be announced on LEGO Ideas no later than June 9th, 2020!

If you would like to enter, submissions may be in either physical bricks or by using a digital building tool such as LEGO Digital Designer. You’re welcome to use image editing tools, such as Photoshop, to enhance your photos/presentation. If you submit a digital entry, you must make sure that you are able to build your entry in physical bricks in case your build is selected to be exhibited in the LEGO House. Take up to five photos of your creation and submit them to the contest. (Make sure to show off all angles and any features or functions of your creation.) Submit your photos in as high a resolution as possible so that the details are can be clearly seen. (If possible, the shortest edge should be at least 1080 pixels.) Add a title and short description. Upload your entry to the contest using the blue Submit Your Entry button at the contest entry page.

Here are some additional rules, specific to the categories. For the nature build, make sure your model’s base is between 4×4 studs and 64×32 studs in total, and the model is no more than 60 bricks high. No parts of your model can overhang 64×32 studs, although you can have different parts overhanging if you have a smaller baseplate. For the minifig vignette, make sure the baseplate is between 16×8 studs and 64×32 studs, and the model is no more than 60 bricks high. No parts of your model can overhang 64×32 studs, although you can have different parts overhanging if you have a smaller baseplate. Include the first word of the category in the title of your entry, e.g. “Nature: xxx” or “Minifigure: xxx”. You are allowed to use any official LEGO element (LEGO System, LEGO DUPLO, LEGO Technic/Constraction) in your entry. The LEGO elements must be genuine (not cut, glued, or otherwise modified). Entries should not contain copies or references to any other existing third-party work or creation or infringements of any third-party intellectual property right. You may use minifigures in your entry, but please only use generic LEGO minifigures that do not use any third party intellectual property. As usual you must be at least 13 to enter this contest. There are some other rules and guidelines, which you can read on the contest entry page.

A minimum of 25 winners across the two categories will each get a signed #40366 LEGO House Dinosaurs set, as well as the opportunity to have their model exhibited at the LEGO House for a year, including a personalized LEGO brick with name and country of the builder to accompany the model. (All costs for shipping the model to be provided by The LEGO Group.) The grand prize winners (one for each category) of this contest will also win the following prizes: #21037 LEGO House set signed by the designer, #40366 LEGO House Dino set, #4000046 LEGO House Tree set, and #21321 LEGO Ideas International Space Station. Two runner up winners (per category) will each receive the following: #21037 LEGO House set signed by the designer, #40366 LEGO House Dino set, and #21319 LEGO Ideas Central Perk set.

I recommend checking out the contest entry page, as there are already some really fun entries. Also, I believe this is the first contest that allows mini-dolls to participate, so if you’re a fan, enter your mini-dolls! What do you think? How do you like this contest? Do they ship back your moc?

This is also my concern. I basically have to lend my Lego to the Lego House for a year. Is it going to come back to me? Is it going to be still in one piece?

They cover the shipping, and I assume that’s both ways. I have heard that sometimes they can get damaged in shipping, but all the parts should be there. I heard this from those who displayed their mocs previously.

Yes, this is my understanding as well. And yes, I also heard stories of projects getting a bit beat up, but this is understandable, especially with large and delicate models. Maybe this is why they switched over to the smaller format. They do try to do their best to pack them carefully. And of course, you also have to pack your project carefully when you ship it.

The snake is really cool, and so is the chicken. I don’t think my building skills are on par with the work of these master builders. 😀

I wish I could visit the Lego house. It seems super fun. But it’s unlikely it will ever happen. Too far away, too expensive. They should do virtual tours!

I like the serpent too. And the cyborg shark. I can’t really think of what I would build and I don’t want to get separated from my Lego for a whole year!
