2022 LEGO Chinese New Year, Super Mario & More!

A number of new LEGO sets have been revealed during the China International Import Expo that I thought would be interesting to discuss. According to Brickset, seven new LEGO Super Mario sets are coming in 2022 (four of which were shown at the expo), along with a large LEGO Monkie Kid set, and two new LEGO Chinese New Year sets. Details below.

The new LEGO Super Mario sets include the #71396 LEGO Super Mario Bowser Jr’s Clown Car, the #71398 LEGO Super Mario Dorrie’s Beachfront, the #71300 LEGO Super Mario Big Urchin Beach Ride, and the #71402 LEGO Super Mario Series 4 Character Pack. The other three sets coming next year that were revealed already are the #71397 LEGO Super Mario Luigi’s Mansion Lab and Poltergust, the #71399 LEGO Super Mario Luigi’s Mansion Entryway, and the #71401 LEGO Super Mario Luigi’s Mansion Haunt-and-Seek. This theme seems to be doing really well, so it’s great to see that LEGO is continuing to support it. You can find all the currently available sets at the LEGO Super Mario section of the Online LEGO Shop.

The #80035 LEGO Monkie Kid Galactic Explorer features the signature colors of Monkie Kid and his team. This could very well become a favorite non-licensed spaceship for a new generation of kids. For the current selection of LEGO Monkie Kid sets, visit the LEGO Monkie Kid section of the Online LEGO Shop.

The LEGO Chinese New Year sets have become very popular in the past few years. The sets are colorful, full of pleasing details, and many interesting new parts and printed elements. The two new sets for 2022 are the #80108 LEGO Chinese New Year Traditions and the #80109 LEGO Chinese New Year Lunar New Year Ice Festival. The first set is made up of six vignettes featuring Chinese New year traditions that can be stacked in different ways, and the second set is similar to the LEGO Winter Village series with minifigs enjoying outdoor winter activities around a frozen lake.

You can see both sets in more detail in the video below. They will be available in January of next year (a bit earlier in Asia). Also, please note that you can still get the #80106 LEGO Chinese New Year Story of Nian and the #80107 LEGO Chinese New Year Spring Lantern Festival from last year at the seasonal items section of the Online LEGO Shop.

I’m particularly excited about the new Chinese New Year sets. What about you? How do you like these upcoming sets? Are you planning to get any of them? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below!

Do we know the prices yet? I’m very interested in the Chinese new year sets. They look wonderful.

I hate to say this, but that spaceship is ugly. It doesn’t look like a spaceship at all.

I heard an analysis it was sort of meant to emulate garish Asian toy spaceships from the 50’s-80’s. The name also alludes to the classic 497 Galaxy Explorer.

Myself, I’m mostly interested in the astronaut torsos.

Oh, dear, this brings back bad memories! 😀

I’m thinking of combining the monkie kid sets and nexo knights sets. I think it’ll work because a lot of technical pieces , ships and/or vehicles are basically in both themes. Medieval meets ancient China. I agree that the monkie kid spaceship is kind of ugly looking. But, what I don’t like I can always take off and replace it with something else. The possibilities are endless particularly with Lego.🤔.

New years sets for me. That’s it.

God, that spaceship is…. weird! I guess the strangeness comes from combining traditional Chinese decorations with a modern spaceship. Was this ever done before? Even in other toys?

I hope the parts are printed in the new year sets. I really like those. And I like that they went with the vignettes. The park is nice too. I wonder what they used for the surface of the pond.

All the parts were printed in the previous sets, so I suppose that will be the case here as well. They are competing with a lot of brick brands in China. It seems that Lego’s strategy is to establish themselves as a premium brand.

Both of the Chinese New Year sets appeal to me, especially the winter scene. The Monkie Kid space ship has some cool looking parts, but otherwise not of interest.

I might possibly try to get some of the parts separately, such as the “Ice Planet Jacket” torsos, some hairpieces and occasional printed parts. Not the whole sets, though.
