LEGO City Mini Shop Series on CUUSOO

Here is a LEGO City project that you might like to support. CUUSOO member Pekko posted a series of LEGO City mini-shops with real brands business names to brighten up your LEGO City. Besides being cute, the sets add a little bit of retro by using the old-school LEGO City shops format on 8×16 baseplates. And they can also connect to each other. Each of the shops comes with 2 minifigures 1 staff and 1 customer.

Currently there are 7 proposed sets in the LEGO City Mini Shop Series, and I’m sure more can be added in the future. I think they real challenge with these sets is going to be getting licenses from all of the different franchises, but I suppose it is doable as it would be good promotion for them as well. Here is the list of proposed LEGO City Mini Shop sets.

LEGO City Mini Shop Starbucks Coffee – come with Starbucks cups screen parts, coffee-machine, and two minifigures. I can tell you that my minifigs have been waiting for this for a long time!

LEGO City Mini Shop Apple Store – comes with mini versions of iPhones and iPads for your little people, and two minifigures. Here is where minifigs can geek out and buy all the latest gadgets!

LEGO City Mini Shop 7-ELEVEN – comes with beverage-cooler, soda-cans, and two minifigures. I particularly like the colors on this set!

LEGO City Mini Shop McDonald’s – comes with McDonald’s cups, overhead-menu, and two minifigures. Standard LEGO colors work really well for this – a match made in heaven!

LEGO City Mini Shop Dunkin Donuts – comes with donuts, overhead-menu, donut-trays, donut-box, and two minifigures. This is why all minifigures look overweight.

LEGO City Mini Shop LEGO Shop – comes with new sticker on LEGO box, Pick-A-Brick area, and two minifigures. Now your minifigures can buy some LEGO just for themselves!

The proposed price for the LEGO City Mini Shop Series is $19.99 for each set, but with licensing fees this could get higher. Still, I think these sets have great potential with lots of playability and cuteness. The project currently has a bit over 2,000 votes. Please remember that CUUSOO projects need to reach 10,000 votes before LEGO would consider them for production. If you like this LEGO project, please VOTE HERE

So what do you think of the LEGO City Mini Shop Series? Do you like them? Would you buy them and add them to your LEGO City? Share your thoughts in the comment section below! 🙂

  • Love those!!! The Starbucks & McDonalds are awesome! The 7 11 is really coll, but the inside is kinda lame.

  • legostuff71 September 25, 2012, 1:30 PM

cool, the dunken donuts shop would be great for the police to go to for their coffee and donut break. I don’t know about the mcdonalds, do we want to have overweight mini figures.

  • Garmadon September 25, 2012, 1:33 PM

    Good Idea!
But I doubt Lego would actually like to use those names 😕
They would probably change them, cause otherwise they would probably need permition from those companies.

    • NinajgoFan515 September 25, 2012, 5:49 PM

They need to get permision but you would think Lego will not try to get permision -_-

    • Kai ZX September 26, 2012, 10:52 AM

Yeah great idea! I love donkin donuts!

  • J.C. September 25, 2012, 2:29 PM

Nice, but I am still waiting for the Space Marines project, Admin.

    • admin September 25, 2012, 5:02 PM

Hm… I have read that the Space Marines project on CUUSOO is probably going to get ditched because of the very similar LEGO space theme coming out next year. 😕

      • J.C. September 25, 2012, 6:41 PM

I read that too on Brickset. But you can still rite about it! I’m guessing TLG got the idea from SM, so if it reaches 10,000 before 2013, TLG would be so :$ that they used HJ’s idea without any credit to him, that they would change their theme and I (J.C.) would LOL. That had a lot of capitalized letters, didn’t it? 😉

        • admin September 25, 2012, 9:11 PM

It may be a coincidence as it takes LEGO several years to develop a theme. If I remember correctly they start working on themes four years before the actual launch. 😉

          • Jacob September 25, 2012, 11:07 PM

I think it was probably a coincidence as well. I think I may have preferred the Space Marines project to the new galaxy line (I really depends on how it ends up looking). One of my biggest problems when LEGO does a theme like that is the “xenophobia” they seem to have with good guys. In the Space marines project, there was at least one species the was clearly not human fighting against the bad guys. Most LEGO themes generally have humans all good guys and all other “ugly” species as bad guys. I am afraid this will continue with the galaxy theme. I am curious how Chima will deal with it, though, as I have seen no indication of proper “people”.

            • admin September 26, 2012, 10:18 AM

Jacob, the human good-guys vs. non-human/ugly bad-guys issue with LEGO likely won’t change. It is so much part of their core philosophy. Also, little kids (LEGO’s target audience) tend to see the world as black and white. Although you could say that Star Wars does break this pattern with some non-human, non-“pretty” species being on the side of good. And some decent looking humans being on the dark side. This is one of the reasons why I like SW so much. It was really a breakthrough from the conventional way of portraying humans and aliens.

So, it could happen, but it takes quite a bit of educating the audience. With Star Wars it is already done through the films, so LEGO just had to follow through with authentic looking characters. Everybody already knows that Yoda is a Jedi master, even if he looks like an ugly little green alien.

However with in-house themes LEGO may not want to put the effort into education; and want their characters to remain obvious good-guys or bad-guys right off the shelf. And of course there is nothing there to stop a kid or adult thinking more outside-the-box to change up the parts and make non-human good-guys, pretty pirates, or clean-shaved robbers with proper teeth. 😉

              • Jacob September 26, 2012, 12:52 PM

I felt the reason the way you identified if they were good guys was what kind of uniform they were wearing. An alien wearing a space police uniform would be a good guy, a human wearing a Blacktron uniform was a bad guy.

Also, I may be spoiled by BIONICLE’s story line. For the most part, LEGO themes don’t have nearly as much story as that. In it there were huge grey scales, and even alternate universe versions of characters who would be on different sides based of the conditions there.

                • admin September 26, 2012, 1:37 PM

Oh, Bionicle! I always avoided the topic as I know practically nothing about that theme. If you ever feel like writing about it, just shoot me a line! 😉

      • Rabbit August 20, 2013, 5:52 AM

Can I ask how do you put a photo for this thing
And I have heard that too that the same set is coming out next year

        • admin August 20, 2013, 10:14 AM

Rabbit, I’m not sure what do you mean. You want to put a photo where? 😕

  • Darren September 25, 2012, 2:40 PM

Licensing fees? Those companies should pay Lego to make those sets because they are basically advertisements! I like the designs but would personally rather see “mom and pop” versions of those types of businesses.

    • admin September 25, 2012, 5:01 PM

Darren, good point – I would say it goes both ways though. If LEGO makes a licensed Apple Store, it will sell like hotcakes with all the geeks, nerds, generic Apple lovers, and also LEGO fans. If LEGO just makes a small shop that looks like a computer store, it will sell to LEGO fans, but not much beyound that. So the publicity and advertisement goes both ways. 😉

      • gid617 September 26, 2012, 7:28 AM

Yeah, I don’t think LEGO would find it that hard to get licenses. And these are really cool, I hope they get made!

        • Eric at A Lego a Day September 26, 2012, 10:30 AM

They could likely get licensing agreements from most of these companies, but I don’t see Apple letting anyone sell something with their logo on it.

I’d prefer to see generic versions of these myself.

  • ntk743 September 25, 2012, 3:18 PM

That looks awesome! I would get the Apple Store set!

  • SKOUTLAW FOR LIFE September 25, 2012, 4:47 PM

i would get the lego lego store and the lego apple store and AWESOME!

  • Jacob September 25, 2012, 9:45 PM

The whole licencing issue would defiantly be a make of break for LEGO (lets just be glad that LEGO bricks have sharp edges so they don’t look like rounded rectangles…)
If a licence could be made, I see some of these (McDonald’s and the LEGO store in particular) doing well. However ever, the LEGO uniforms Iv’e seen look nothing like that in the picture. Still, I wish the Toy’s R Us and LEGO Truck that was released came with a TRU/ LEGO employee instead of just generic city figures.

    • admin September 26, 2012, 10:30 AM

Jacob, please note that CUUSOO projects are only suggestions. LEGO has the right to completely redesign an idea once it reaches 10,000 votes. So how will the actual set look like or how the minifigures will look like is not final.

Interestingly, the first CUUSOO projects were in fact fully designed by LEGO. Only the concept was given and voted on. Even the Minecraft project that did have a fan-created submission was completely redesigned.

Now that so many talented LEGO fans joined CUUSOO and submitted ideas with fully designed models, it is going to be interesting to see where LEGO will go with the designs – Will they keep them? Will they change them? Because many of us vote on the projects on face-value – meaning we want them to look like on the pictures. And if LEGO would redesign them, the voting audience may not be happy.

CUUSOO is still in beta, and this is one of the reasons. It will take a while to flush out all this evolution and see how to deal with it. 🙄

      • Jacob September 26, 2012, 12:40 PM

I know they will likely be redesigned. Its just, LEGO already had made a TRU truck and a LEGO truck where they had an opportunity to make LEGO and TRU employees, but just went with regular city figures. If LEGO were to make all the licensing agreements and made the sets exactly (or better) than what they look like now, except only put in city minifigures that had already been released, then it makes the sets significantly less desirable. The whole redesign issue is one that we’ll just have to see as time moves on and more projects get approved.

  • Aubseywaubsey- Ninja of Elfs September 26, 2012, 9:53 AM

I would get the Mcdonald’s and the Dunken Donuts, I think this is really cute idea! =)

  • bejeken September 27, 2012, 8:12 AM

this is so awessssoome, I like the shops

  • Håkan, Sweden September 27, 2012, 11:28 AM

Hmmm, they seem to have followed the usage of putting stickers on top of multiple bricks. Makes it impossible to disassemble the model afterwards. I would have preferred if they, when possible, used 1x 4x 3 panels instead.

  • Quad September 28, 2012, 11:56 PM

Very Cute, I think I might just have to wander on over there and give it my support. 🙂

    • Quad September 28, 2012, 11:57 PM

I also like how the LEGO shop has a normal 2×4 as a giant one. lol.

hello, I would buy the stores, what should I do?

    • admin October 22, 2013, 3:27 PM

Gennaro, this is a CUUSOO project, not a currently available LEGO set. LEGO may produce it in the future, but at this point the best I can suggest is that you build your own. 😉

  • gennaro cadavero October 22, 2013, 3:02 PM

    ???

  • Milly Bolger February 18, 2014, 8:08 AM

    it looks amazing

    • admin February 18, 2014, 9:54 AM

Milly, yeah, it actually made it to 10,000 votes, but unfortunately it was rejected by the LEGO team due to licensing issues. 🙁

  • Alexander Amini June 14, 2014, 7:41 PM

Awesome!!!!! when and where can we buy them?

    • admin June 15, 2014, 3:19 PM

Alexander, this was a submission on LEGO CUUSOO (now called LEGO Ideas). It did not meet the review requirements so it will not be made into an actual LEGO set, but you can certainly copy the design. 😉

  • daniel July 7, 2014, 7:16 AM

    can I buy these stuff?

    • admin July 7, 2014, 9:38 AM

Daniel, this series was not approved as a LEGO CUUSOO/LEGO Ideas product, so your only option is to take the pictures as inspiration and build them yourself.

  • bennno447 July 8, 2014, 8:49 PM

Emiliano, this is not a LEGO product but a fan created model from years ago. It’s not for sale.
