The LEGO fantasy world of Ivan Angeli

Anything can be made out of LEGO, we all know that. Still occasionally you might run across the work of a LEGO artist who takes the unlimited nature of LEGO to new levels and makes something breathtakingly magical, beautiful and dreamlike…

LEGO Fantasy by Ivan Angeli - Durth Dreir

Today I would like to introduce you to such a LEGO artist from the newly formed LEGO Users Group Beokocka (meaning: “white brick”) from Belgrade, Serbia. His name is Ivan Angeli, and he is an AFOL (Adult-Fan-of-LEGO). Throughout this article I will show you some of Ivan’s LEGO creations, and also let him share a little bit about himself. Enjoy! 🙂

“All of my LEGO MOCs are inspirited by the fantasy world of AD&D (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons), precisely the game Baldur’s Gate I and II. So my main themes are LEGO Fantasy and LEGO Castle, and there are a lot of fantasy creatures in my LEGO MOCs as well.”

“By strange set of circumstances I’ve got my hands on a lot of red 1×2 bricks, and the only fraction that could fit that color scheme were Drow from the Underdark, so many of my castles have that evil vibe.”

“I like to build a LEGO creation until I use all the LEGO bricks that I own, even tires for ballasts and interior construction.”

“All of my Brickshelf Folders have three main subfolders: the Main Folder, where I store all the pictures of the finished MOC, the Construction Folder, where different stages of the building process are presented. And a Minifigs Folder with all the minifigs in a particular MOC – ranging from a few to a few hundred. You can also see some of my LEGO creations on flickr.”

“I love to use my girlfriend as a model to represent scale for my LEGO models.” (See the full size picture here.)

“I really like blue and red lighting; giving LEGO MOCs a celestial and evil mood, as shown below.” (More pictures here.)

LEGO Fantasy by Ivan Angeli - Icewind Dale

“I love to play with my finished LEGO creations, but really play, like a child. I never had a Dark Age. Also, I accidentally discovered that girls actually like guys who build things with LEGO, so I stopped hiding my LEGO MOCs when a new girl would come over for the first time.” 😉

LEGO Fantasy by Ivan Angeli- Waterdeep

“I never make plans for my LEGO creations, use LEGO Digital Designer, or any other program. I just take a LEGO baseplate and start building – usually while listening to good music.” 😀

“What else can I tell you about myself and my LEGO creations? If you have some questions, feel free to ask. Thanks for checking out my LEGO creations. Hope they give you some inspiration!”

Wow, the color scheme is incredible! The lighting is also very effective. That’s what I call a real bad-guy lair. Imagine the story possablities with just those MOCs! Probably 20 episodes could be made!

    Hi friends:)

Thank you for the kind words! 🙂

And, just to mention this: I have around 10.000 to 15.000 of red 1×2 brick, they are my main building material, and I’ve got them over the bricklink; they were 0.01e per piece, meaning that you can also get 10.000 of these for 100 e 🙂 And I’ve also got 30% discount, so it actually cost me 70e + shipping, which I arranged over the friend, giving him 10e for gas.

And the seller had all other colors, but red was the cheapest one 🙂

So, do a search for this type of bricks in your and surrounding countries (to minimize shipping costs), and find someone with a high quantity, try to negotiate some discount and start building! 🙂

As a castle builder, I would recommend some amount of 1×1 bricks ( 1/10 of that amount of 1×2 bricks that you buy), and some 2×2 bricks, 2×2 and 2×1 slopes, 2×2 and 2×1 inverted slopes, and some arches, mainly 1×4 and 1×6 – this can make 90% of your buildings, and still look wonderful; pick a color and a support color (red and black in my case), like red and white; white and grey, blue and yellow:) and let your imagination go wild 😉

For small pieces, like 1×1 round plates (in all trans colors, for fire and water:) and 1×2 plates in trans-clear (wonderful for ice and waterfalls), I recommend PaB-s (Pick-a-Brick wall), where you can buy a cup of Lego for 15$ in USA or 15e in EU (prices my vary); you can get as many as 3000 to 5000 of 1×1 round plates in one cup, you can also mix colors, and one cup is more then enough for beginning, on water surface, or those new cool windows 🙂

I will be happy to answer any additional questions 😉
Again, thank you for the kind words 😉

i have a few words to say! YOU ARE AWESOME DUDE!!!

      • Legoman640 February 14, 2013, 3:59 PM

All hail the Lego King!!!!! You are so awesome Ivan!

    • Strider February 13, 2013, 9:35 PM

How long does it take you to build a big MOC? Also do you buy mainly seperate parts, or do you get sets to? Thanks, and BTW awesome creations!

      • Strider February 15, 2013, 4:13 PM

        Ivan???

      • Angeli February 15, 2013, 4:49 PM

        Again, thank you guys 🙂

For smaller mocs (48×48) I need few days, for larger one, few weeks to month, or two, depending on size:)

But keep in mind that my bricks are always sorted in a way I can easy find what I am looking for, and that I do not plan – just build – those two things reduce building time A LOT 🙂

        • Strider February 16, 2013, 11:25 AM

Thanks. It’s nice to know that lego things like this can be made with out a lot of programming ahead. I would hear people talk about t and get worried that I would need to start 🙂

          • gid617 February 18, 2013, 9:15 AM

Yeah, planning takes a lot of time and it spoils the fun of doing whatever you want! 😀
Thanks for the tips Angeli, I hope I’ll be able to go to a PaB wall someday…

    • Micho February 13, 2013, 11:42 PM

Awesome Angeli keep it up!!! Thanks for the tips.

  • C February 13, 2013, 7:45 PM

WOW. WOW, WOW, WOW! This is amazing. You are one of the best LEGO builders I have ever seen. That is AWESOME, in the fullest sense of the word.

  • Ike October 24, 2013, 8:45 PM

Does the girl look photoshoped to anyone else, or is it just me? She looks stretched!

    • admin October 24, 2013, 8:57 PM

Ika, naw, she is very real. It is just an illusion created by the striped shirt. 😉

    • Ivan Angeli January 5, 2014, 10:16 PM

      Hi 😉
      She is quite real 😉
she just has that elfish type of body 🙂

btw, for all who like big structures, I have another interesting build (I will try to code the picture): http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Angeli/Sshamath/angeli_amapa.jpg

In any case, I can link picture folder and say few words, if people still come on this thread 🙂

      • admin January 5, 2014, 10:19 PM

Oh, I was hoping you will confirm that she is real! Love your new picture! That’s how the world should really look like! And I think that bridge would be quite popular. 😀
