The much talked about #75827 LEGO Ghostbusters Firehouse HQ is going to be released tomorrow (January 1st), so this is a good time to review this massive LEGO set. As far as size, with 4,634 pieces this is the third largest LEGO set ever released, after the 5,922 piece #10189 LEGO Taj Mahal from 2008, and the 5,197 piece #10179 LEGO Star Wars UCS Millennium Falcon from 2007. It is surprising to see such a huge set in a theme that is not nearly as popular as Star Wars, or as famous as the Taj Mahal, but I guess LEGO is counting on the new Ghostbusters movie coming in July 2016 to become a hit, or that there are still enough Ghostbusters fans from the ’80s, who are also LEGO fans, and have lots of cash. 🙂

As you can see below, the LEGO Ghostbusters Firehouse HQ opens up like a doll-house, but it is also stacked like the LEGO Modular Buildings, so each floor can be taken off. This can be very useful if you don’t have enough room to display the set in an opened up position, although I have to say that having it opened, gives you the most impressive look, and also the easiest way to play inside.
The inside of the LEGO Ghostbusters Firehouse HQ is full of details. In fact this is my favorite feature of the set. You will learn so much about building various pieces of furniture, unique building techniques, and clever ways to use LEGO pieces. I should mention here that while there are some printed elements, most of the decorations you see are stickers. Also, the LEGO Ideas Ghostbusters Ecto-1 fits inside the building, although you will have to remove or reposition most of the furniture from the first floor. You can see how this is done in the video reviews below.
It is difficult to review such a massive LEGO set only with words and pictures, so I thought to include a couple of excellent video-reviews for you. This way you will get a much better sense of how things look and function. The first video is by Stephen from the BrickShow. I particularly recommend watching the section where the floors are assembled and disassembled, and when Stephen fits the Ecto-1 inside. The second video is the stop-motion build of the set from ArtiFex Creations, walking you step-by-step through the building process – really fun to watch. Both videos are in the player below.
In summary, I would say that the #75827 LEGO Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters is definitely the ultimate LEGO set for Ghostbusters fans, although the $350 price-tag will likely turn some people off. Looking at the price-per-piece ratio of 7 cents, this is actually a decent deal, especially with the huge number of dark-red elements, and the great looking minifigures – most of them unique to this set. The building does take up a lot of space (especially when opened), and you will also have to invest about 12 hours to assemble it – so it requires some planning and dedication. But if you like Ghostbusters and LEGO, this is it. It is available at the Online LEGO Shop.
If you are planning to get the LEGO Ghostbusters Firehouse HQ, don’t forget to also pick up the #21108 LEGO Ideas Ghostbusters Ecto-1 You can find it under the LEGO Ideas section of the Online LEGO Shop.
