2016 LEGO Creator summer sets review

Four new LEGO Creator sets were just released a few days ago, with three of them being some of the most anticipated sets of the year. The sets are the #31049 LEGO Creator Twin Spin Helicopter, the #31051 LEGO Creator Lighthouse Point, the #31052 LEGO Creator Vacation Getaways, and the #21053 LEGO Creator Treehouse Adventures. While the main models in these sets are excellent and we have plenty to talk about, all four of them also come with alternate models. So let’s take a closer look! 🙂

LEGO Creator Sets

#31051 LEGO CREATOR LIGHTHOUSE POINT: Meet the wildlife at the brightly lit Lighthouse Point! Enjoy seashore adventures with this amazing 3-in-1 LEGO Creator set, featuring a cozy lighthouse and lightkeeper’s cottage with a detailed interior, including a table, chair, lamp and a painting. Climb up to the gallery for a bird’s-eye view and turn on the lighthouse beacon to guide passing ships. Then enjoy a delicious drink at the lightkeeper’s cottage, where you can see the friendly orca go by, before a pleasant evening sat around the open fire while the waves lap on the seashore. When you feel like a change, simply move the modular sections to remodel the set or rebuild it to create a house with pier and speedboat, or a boathouse. Lighthouse Point measures over 9” (25cm) high, 9” (23cm) wide and 5” (15cm) deep. House with pier and speedboat measures over 4” (12cm) high, 3” (10cm) wide and 5” (13cm) deep. Boathouse measures over 3” (9cm) high, 3” (10cm) wide and 5” (14cm) deep. Includes 2 minifigures, plus a buildable orca and 2 buildable seagulls. 528 pieces, price $59.99 – BUY HERE

#31051 LEGO Creator Lighthouse Point

I have to say that this set is phenomenal in every way, and one of my most favorite sets of the year. Although it is advertised as a 3-in-one set, there are actually several more configurations besides the three mentioned, because the tower, the house and the landscaping are built up of modular sections, which allows you to easily switch around entire areas for a different look. Also, the house section can be displayed both closed and open, adding to the customizability. All configurations of the set look very sweet, plus there is also a light-brick and a brick-built orca – who wouldn’t love a LEGO orca? The price of the set is at 11 cents a piece, which is just a tad higher than the customary 10 cents/piece. But for all the options you get here, it is totally worth it. I’m positive you would not be disappointed with this set.

#31052 LEGO CREATOR VACATION GETAWAYS: Head for sunnier climes with the Vacation Getaways set! Enjoy travelling adventures with this amazing 3-in-1 LEGO Creator set, featuring an awesome camper packed with everything you need for the perfect vacation, including a luxurious interior with toilet, fold up bed, kitchen, sofa and TV. Unpack the foldout table and chairs from the camper’s roof, extend the awning and enjoy a peaceful barbecue. Then take the motorboat for a spin, try some bear spotting, or study the map and plan your next journey in the wonderful camper! Rebuild to create a perfect summer home or an awesome yacht. Camper with trailer measures over 3” (10cm) high, 14” (36cm) long and 3” (8cm) wide. Summer home measures over 6” (16cm) high, 6” (16cm) wide and 4” (11cm) deep. Yacht measures over 5” (15cm) high, 9” (24cm) long and 3” (10cm) wide. Includes 2 minifigures, plus a brick-built bear. 792 pieces. Price: $69.99 – BUY HERE

#31052 LEGO Motorhome

Just recently we talked about LEGO campers and RVs (see link at the end of this post), and mentioned that this is the largest and most detailed minifig-scale LEGO camper to date. It looks exceptionally good on the outside, and it even comes with a slide-out section and an rolled up awning! The extra pieces are also stored away very much like on real campers. And you also get a super cute brick-built bear! If that’s not enough, this is also a 3-in-1 set that can be rebuilt into a yacht, or a summer home. While the camper is the star of this set, the alternate models are also well done. Watch the video-review below to see all the details.

#21053 LEGO CREATOR TREEHOUSE ADVENTURES: Spend happy days playing in the amazing treehouse! Enjoy exciting adventures with this colorful 3-in-1 LEGO Creator model. Help the children build the treehouse. Lower the pulley to hoist up the planks, hammer the wood together and use the paint roller to add the final touches. When you’re done building, put your tools in the secret hiding place and hoist the treehouse flag! Use the squirt gun to ward off invaders and have fun looking after the tiny blue jay and the frog that live in the tree. Rebuild to create a cool clubhouse or an awesome tree fort. Treehouse measures over 6” (17cm) high, 10” (26cm) wide and 5” (13cm) deep. Clubhouse measures over 5” (13cm) high, 7” (18cm) wide and 5” (15cm) deep. Tree fort measures over 7” (20cm) high, 7” (19cm) wide and 5” (15cm) deep. Includes 2 minifigures, plus a blue jay and a frog. 387 pieces. Price: $34.99 – BUY HERE

#31053 LEGO Creator Treehouse

This set is similar to the #31051 LEGO Creator Lighthouse Point in that – although it is called a 3-in-1 set – it actually has more options than that. And while LEGO calls the three main models treehouse, clubhouse, and tree fort, it is pretty clear that this is basically the ultimate treehouse building kit. Another interesting feature of this set is how the tree canopy was built. I think this is the first time LEGO is using this technique. A fun set overall with plenty of options and playability.

#31049 LEGO CREATOR TWIN SPIN HELICOPTER: Conquer ice and snow with the 3-in-1 Twin Spin Helicopter! Power up the Twin Spin rotors of this awesome machine and take to the skies. Lower the winch, hook up the tracked snowcat vehicle and airlift it to its destination. Perform perfect landings on ice and snow with the helicopter’s cool skis! The 3-in-1 LEGO Creator Twin Spin Helicopter features a high-tech design with a light-blue and white color scheme and can be rebuilt to create a snowmobile with functioning winch or a single-engine airplane with spinning propeller. Twin Spin Helicopter measures over 4” (12cm) high, 13” (33cm) long and 7” (18cm) wide. Snowcat measures over 1” (3cm) high, 3” (10cm) long and 3” (9cm) wide. Snowmobile measures over 2” (6cm) high, 8” (22cm) long and 2” (7cm) wide. Single-engine airplane measures over 3” (8cm) high, 6” (16cm) long and 7” (19cm) wide. 326 pieces. Price: $29.99 – BUY HERE

#31049 LEGO Creator

From the four new LEGO Creator sets this is the least expensive, and – at least to me – the least interesting. I always liked the mini 3-in-1 LEGO Creator sets because they are great pocket models, but this one is larger, so not as portable. However it is not minifigure-scale either, but somewhere in between. The set could still be fun, especially since you can build three alternate models with the pieces, but with all the other excellent LEGO Creator sets this year, this one just doesn’t seem that exciting to me. But that’s just my opinion…

LEGO has been really doing an excellent job with the LEGO Creator line. The fact that three of the four summer models are some of the most interesting and exciting sets of the year proves that. And don’t forget that we also got two great LEGO Creator sets earlier this year; the #31048 LEGO Creator Lakeside Lodge, and the #31050 LEGO Creator Corner Deli. You can’t go wrong with any of them. You can find both the new sets as well as the earlier releases under the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.

That treehouse looks epic. My minifigs need it so badly…
For now, they’ll just have to make do with the cramped one that I built.

    • ninja5 May 27, 2016, 10:08 AM

The lighthouse is pretty cool too, but way out of my price range.

      • admin May 27, 2016, 11:28 AM

Yes’ both are very nice sets.

  • hippyman May 27, 2016, 11:08 AM

The lighthouse is cool, but didn’t the already release a lighthouse not too long ago?

    • admin May 27, 2016, 11:30 AM

They actually did several lighthouses. There was a Creator one in 2011, a Friends one in 2015, and the Scooby Doo one also in 2015. I think all are great, but what I particularly like about this one is the modular design. If you watch the video you will see how versatile this set is, even compared to the other ones.

      • Icepacklady May 27, 2016, 12:50 PM

My daughter has the Friends lighthouse and I like it a lot. However as is typical with most Friends sets they don’t give you a full house/roof. So you’d need 2 sets or some extra pieces to get the full building. I do really like the colors of the Friends set though, better than the red and black of this Creator set.
I’ll have to look up the 2011 Creator set. That was before I got back into Lego.

        • admin May 27, 2016, 1:06 PM

I really like the colors on the Friends lighthouse too. It is not conventional, but the colors come together nicely and the set looks very sweet.

Do you know when the new Lego Star wars sets are going to be released? I really want to get the Clone turbo tank! I found them on ebay, but they are super expensive.

    • admin May 27, 2016, 11:45 AM

I have heard that they are already showing up at some Toys’R’Us stores, so general release must be soon.

  • legostuff71 May 27, 2016, 12:18 PM

Hey LEGO Fan 123, I saw on the June LEGO calendar a picture ( on the back) of the turbo tank. So, I’m thinking it’s coming out in JUNE because I want it too.

    • admin May 27, 2016, 1:10 PM

Thanks for mentioning that. Yes, that makes sense.

  • rainey May 27, 2016, 12:18 PM

LOVE the lighthouse and it will be just in time to get the mini park promo set I’ve been waiting for next month.

The whale is too cute! I wonder, tho, if there should also be a rowboat to access it since it seems to be entirely surrounded by water… Oh well, I’m sure we have rowboats from various pirate sets. 😏

    • rainey May 27, 2016, 12:33 PM

I should be clear and say the June promotional “Fountain” set since there is also a park set which is not promotional.

Happily, in Canada, the lighthouse is $74.99 and hits the threshold for the promo. I mean I hope it does but if I have to buy something from the Pick-a-Model wall that should do it!

      • Icepacklady May 27, 2016, 12:46 PM

I am doing the same thing Rainey. I want the lighthouse but it’s pricey. I am waiting for the June promo to get it.. I am looking forward to that fountain promo as well.
I got the Vacation Getaways when it was released last week but I haven’t had time to build it yet. I love, love the treehouse too.

        • admin May 27, 2016, 1:08 PM

You must have amazing self control. I would have started building that RV, no matter what urgent and important things are in the way! 😀

        • rainey May 27, 2016, 2:23 PM

Vacation Getaway is adorable and should fit in with the concept of camping at the shore beautifully. What fun!

          • admin May 27, 2016, 4:30 PM

Hm… nice idea there! How about also throwing in the tree house in the mix? You know, in such cramped quarters in the RV, the parents got tired of the kids, threw them out, and the kids had to build themselves a tree house. 🙄

      • admin May 27, 2016, 1:09 PM

Hm… I can’t remember how that works as far the minimum. I remember running into this before, but I don’t recall if I had to add another item or not when there was only a one cent difference…

    • admin May 27, 2016, 1:10 PM

Yes, a boat, or at least some small watercraft would be a must. But that’s part of the fun! You can always expand on the set to make it more awesome. 😀

  • Baricade May 27, 2016, 6:44 PM

It’s probably worth noting the tree house is designed in homage to 6071-1 Forestmen’s Crossing.

    • admin May 27, 2016, 8:29 PM

Oh! I didn’t know that! Thanks for sharing! 😀

      • Håkan May 28, 2016, 7:01 AM

Yeah, it might be… 6071 was only released in the US, IIRC…

The forestmaiden is rather cool, though, although that early lipstick head looks dated now…

  • Håkan May 28, 2016, 6:10 PM

Speaking of Creator, I saw the glimpse of your feature article in the Creator magazine on Bricklink…

I couldn’t read Korean, and just judging from the pictures, I thought that the builder was Russian… Something about the styles of the builds led me to that impression, instead of sunny Florida…

    • admin May 28, 2016, 10:26 PM

Are you talking about the article on Brickset? I don’t think I ever built anything Russian. I don’t even know what that would look like. I know they have that pretty church with the onion tops, and I remember seeing Russian nesting dolls, but that’s pretty much my knowledge about Russia – oh, and they have lots of snow! 😀

Please note that not all pictures in the Brickset article are my creations. Only the page with the Taj, and the one below it with the Little Prince, mini chess set, and a couple of my armies. They also featured some of my other MOCs as the interview is eight pages long.

If you guys want, I can put together an article with the English version of the interview. It was a fun process. Creator reached out to me because apparently the mini Taj is very popular in Asia, and a number of people claimed it as their own. I was told that I’m the first non-Asian builder they featured. Being a LEGO fan is very interesting at times. You never know where your MOCs may end up. 🙄

      • Håkan May 29, 2016, 3:38 AM

It was something about the aesthetics. Maybe the chessboard…

But if you have the time, please do… Apparently, as could be construed from the title “Creator”, the magazine largely contained examples of MOC:s and AFOL culture…

        • admin May 29, 2016, 9:27 AM

Oh, I do know about Russians being amazing at chess! But my chess set was inspired by a little wooden one my dad got, and used to belong to his dad when he was a child. So yeah, pretty old. It was just a bit bigger than my LEGO version and had two small drawers to store the pieces. It had rounded corners though, not square ones like mine. Because the playing pieces were so small, each square on the board had a little hole, and the playing pieces had a peg to fit in the hole. So sort of like a reverse stud system. 😀
