Official product description: Create a LEGO version of the Caterham Seven 620R, a custom-built sports car with an unashamed old-school vibe. Power steering? No chance. Electric windows? Forget it. The Caterham Seven is definitely not for the faint-hearted – luxury is for wimps! Remove the nose cone, engine cover, or engine, to take a closer look at the authentic details of a LEGO model that’s for true car connoisseurs only.

Insights from Carl Greatrix, fan designer, and Henrik Andersen, LEGO designer: “One of the most exhilarating drives I’ve ever had was out on the track in a Caterham Seven. It is brutally fast due to its light weight and tremendous fun to be in. It really struck a chord in my heart that I never forgot”, Carl Greatrix a.k.a. bricktrix_Carl explains as he talks about his love for Caterham cars. This love turned to inspiration for his future LEGO Caterham model, Carl explains; “When I got back into building LEGO car models, I thought the shape of the vehicle would lend itself to being modeled well in LEGO bricks as it is very angular, and if I could find a suitable scale then I would be able to get all the details into it that I would love to see.” Henrik Andersen, LEGO designer, shared his enthusiasm for Carl’s work; “Carl really did a great job of converting the real car’s shape into a LEGO version as both the sloping front and the hood are really complex.”

In the video review below from Bricks magazine, you can see the model in more detail. I’m very impressed that all the decorated elements are printed, including the hardly visible break disks on the wheels! That’s a lot of printing and attention to detail!

While the #21307 LEGO Ideas Caterham Seven 620R definitely looks impressive, and I think most people will be very happy with it, it’s worth noting that there are some differences from the original LEGO Ideas submission. Carl proposed a number of different color variations (see examples below), and some LEGO fans prefer these over the plainer looking yellow and black version. Of course the model can be rebuilt in other colors, however because the decorations are printed, they will either have to be left off, or some yellow will have to remain on alternate models. It seems like a yellow and dark-green version should still be possible though.

Also, the original submission had working steering, while the final model has no functional steering at all. Perhaps this was too hard to accomplish without compromising the look and stability of the vehicle at this scale. And I liked the spare tire that was included at the back of the original. Unfortunately on the final model the extra tire is missing.

Still, I think the #21307 LEGO Ideas Caterham Seven 620R is a beautiful model for car enthusiasts, and a perfect addition to the other larger LEGO vehicles like the #10242 LEGO Creator MINI Cooper, the #10248 LEGO Creator Ferrari F40, and #10252 LEGO Creator Volkswagen Beetle. As mentioned at the beginning, the set will be available in October. In the meantime you can check out the other fan-submitted sets under the LEGO Ideas section of the Online LEGO Shop.

I love this Ideas set, although I really wish some of the great details of the engine and exhaust could have been translated better from the original concept. Plus, just having bare wheels seems like an oversight, considering that Carl’s idea had wheel covers from previous sets. I have already been to bricklink to see how I could update the model once I get it:-) This will go great alongside my F40 and Beetle…I just might have to invest in the Mini and Camper Van!

Yeah, it’s a really sweet vehicle, and customizing it further is very much in spirit with what the original is about. So yeah, upgrade away! 😀

Brilliant design, nice box, good price and no annoying stickers!
    Goodbye wages!

Yeah, who needs wages when you can have LEGO! 😀

That is one awesome LEGO car! 😀 Although the original yellow version in the last picture is much more detailed; too bad we didn’t get a bit more detail, like the spare tire you mentioned, or the hub caps. However, it does look very accurate to the car on display at the Caterham media reveal, which is excellent. My only concern is that the front looks a little weak: it kept breaking during the Bricks review. Speaking of the front, I read that the steering function had to be removed because the car was too flimsy with it to pass LEGO’s quality test. But it’s probably an easy mod to put the steering back. I actually kind of want this… although $80 is a bit above my current budget. 😕
Now, my favorite part: new parts! Besides the 5 (or 6) existing 2016 new parts I’ve found (of which 3 are new colors), there is a new 2X4 Double Bearing Plate, in medium stone grey, used twice above the rear wheels. Looks useful, I hope we’ll see it again next year. 🙂

Yeah, I saw that too about the nose keep falling off! It seems like it is only attached by one clip. Maybe a second one could be added? Or just don’t lift it up holding the nose! 😀

I’m particularly excited about the new printed parts, but the new elements are great too. I’m sure we will see them in other sets as well. I was just reading earlier today about all the new sets coming next year (that we know of). No pictures yet, just a list, but it’s interesting.

The nose section is not attached by a clip, actually, it’s attached to the main model by a 2×2 Rocker Bearing ( http://brickset.com/parts/613421 ). That’s a four stud connection, but I think the problem is that the nose is easily pushed off the rocker bearing. Not sure how that could be fixed, given the size of the edit space, although maybe clips would work better. 😕
I don’t care much about the printed parts; it’s great that they’re printed, but to me the prints have limited applications besides their use on the set itself.
A list of new sets? Intriguing…. Only problem is it doesn’t tell me what new parts there are on the sets. 😉

Oh, I see… couldn’t make out what part that was inside the nose section. Yeah, the 2017 list is just preliminary. I might right up something about them. 🙂
