For many LEGO fans, the most exciting set this month is the #10265 LEGO Creator Ford Mustang. It is already considered one of the best-designed and most beautiful LEGO cars to date. LEGO designers went all out on this vehicle and even included functional steering and various customization options and other features that we haven’t seen in previous LEGO Creator cars. 🙂

Whenever a large and beautiful set like this get released, LEGO fans eagerly look forward to the designer-video, where LEGO designers themselves discuss what went into creating the set. They may show off special features, prototypes, challenges they faced during the design process, new elements they needed to introduce, and many other interesting little tidbits from behind-the-scenes. In the video below, LEGO Senior Designer Carl Merriam and LEGO Element Designer Mani Zamani talk about all the work that went into the #10265 LEGO Creator Ford Mustang. Enjoy!

That was really interesting, isn’t it? I especially enjoyed learning about what went into designing the steering system. And the smaller Mustang looks so awesome! For your reference, here is the full description of the set: Discover the magic of an iconic 1960s American muscle car with the LEGO Creator Ford Mustang, featuring dark-blue bodywork with white racing stripes, bonnet scoop, printed mustang grille badge, GT emblems, and 5-spoke rims with road-gripping tires. Developed with input from Ford, this authentic replica comes with optional add-ons for customization, including a selection of license plates, supercharger, rear ducktail spoiler, beefy exhaust pipes, front chin spoiler, and a nitrous oxide tank. You can even adjust the lift of the rear axle for an extra-mean look! Remove the roof panel or open the doors and you have access to the detailed interior with handsome seats, radio, working steering and a mid-console gearshift. Store items in the trunk or lift the hood to reveal a detailed big block 390 V8 engine with battery, hoses, and air filter detailing. This advanced building set has been designed to provide a challenging and rewarding building experience full of nostalgia and makes a great centerpiece for the home or office. Measures over 3” (10cm) high, 13” (34cm) long and 5” (14cm) wide. 1,471 pieces. Price: $149.99 – BUY HERE

If the #10265 LEGO Creator Ford Mustang is not sweet enough for you, LEGO is also throwing in a cool Ford Mustang key ring when you purchase the set. Please note that this offer is only for LEGO VIP members. The key ring features the LEGO logo on one side, the Ford Mustang logo on the other side, and a small LEGO VIP tag. This offer is valid until supplies last at official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop.

Looks like LEGO is really focusing on cars this month, because they are also offering Double VIP Points on two recently released sets with vehicles, the #75893 LEGO Speed Champions 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and 1970 Dodge Charger R/T and the #42093 LEGO Technic Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. You can find them both at the Online LEGO Shop.

And, of course, you can also check out the other LEGO Creator Expert Builder cars, like the #10220 LEGO Creator Volkswagen T1 Camper Van, the #10242 LEGO Creator MINI Cooper, the #10252 LEGO Creator Volkswagen Beetle, the #10258 LEGO Creator London Bus, and the #10262 LEGO Creator James Bond Aston Martin BD5. As Carl mentioned in the video above, although the cars are not exactly the same scale, they do look pretty great together. You can find them all at the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.

And don’t forget about the large LEGO Technic sports cars, like the #42056 LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS, the #42083 LEGO Technic Bugatty Chiron, the #42096 LEGO Technic Porsche 911 RSR, and the above-mentioned #42093 LEGO Technic Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (currently with Double VIP Points). You can find them all at the LEGO Technic section of the Online LEGO Shop.

The smaller dark green Ford Mustang is very cool. I wish they had released both of them!

I really like these designer videos. I think they should do them on more products. I like to see what it takes to design a set.

I enjoy interviews with Carl, but if he wasn’t the designer, why is he the one being interviewed? Why wasn’t Mike Psiaki included?

It appears that Mike was not available for this interview for whatever reason. That would be my guess.

Loved the video! It’s awesome that they made real steering for the set. I don’t quite understand why they needed to change the wheels for this, but I suppose this means that we can also expect this feature from future Creator vehicles now that they have the right wheel.

It all seems to be a clearance issue. Given the past models in the Creator Expert line the wheels have been pretty flush with the body. If the wheels were going to turn they would have either needed to push the wheels farther out, make a larger wheel well, or redesign the wheels.
But I definitely think you’re spot on that this will be a regular feature we can expect. I wonder if it was in part because the Aston Martin had more functionality than previous models and they wanted to continue this trend.
